MATCH REPORT: Fast finishing Jersey Flegg Canberra Raiders share the spoils with Penrith Panthers

The Jersey Flegg Panthers were forced to settle for a 26-all draw after being run down by Canberra Raiders at Panthers Stadium on Sunday.

Ata Mariota charged through some flimsy defence to reduce the deficit to just six points heading into the final ten minutes. Timoko then scooped up a loose ball to run away and score. Neither side could come up with the game-breaking play sharing a hard-fought draw.

If our side can get a good start in a game they will be very hard to beat at the back end of the year. I make time to go early and watch each week and they have proven that they can beat anyone. Yesterday in the first half they seemed to go away from structure and Penrith dominated. Second half they went back to it and scored some great tries of the back of setting them up and not just playing off the cuff. Smith Shields looked great when he went to fullback. Bit unlucky in the end as that field goal just missed. I was down on the hill in the Raiders corner on the southern end and thought it went over. I think the 20’s game is on fox next weekend so do yourselves a favour and watch them go around.

Normally Sky Sports in New Zealand cover their Jersey Flegg team...

Just checked, it will be on Saturday morning on Fox League. For some reason, the Canterbury Cup match which follows isn't scheduled.

Preview

The Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team head off on their biggest "road trip" of the season this week - flying to Auckland for a clash with the New Zealand Warriors at North Harbour Stadium. It is part of a double header, the warm up for the clash between the Canberra Raiders NSW Cup affiliate Mounties and the Warriors.

Last week: The Raiders produced an extraordinary 26 all draw with the third placed Penrith Panthers on Sunday at Panther Stadium - after they trailed 26-6 at the 50 minute mark.

The Raiders mounted all the early pressure, with hooker Kyle Patterson kicking a 40/20 after just five minutes. But the Raiders' ball security let them down, and the Panthers were the first to score in corner, through winger Glenn McGrady in the 9th minute. Half Brendan Hands coverted from the sideline to give the home team a 6-0 lead.

The Raiders hit back in the 17th minute, with centre Harley Smith Shields chasing a kick from five eighth Jarrett Subloo. Toby Westcott also had his kicking boots on, and levelled the scores at six apiece. However, the Panthers then took control. Penrith centre Jake Tago scored out wide in the 24th minute after some flimsy defence on the line from Canberra. And then with four minutes remaining in the half, Hands charged up the middle of the park, scoring under the posts, despite the attentions of the Raiders' defenders.

The Panthers added to their 16-6 half time lead five minutes into the second stanza, with bench player Maurice Trindall burrowing through plenty of defence on the goal line, on the last tackle. They hit 26 points five minutes later when winger Justin Jones scored out wide.

But then Canberra staged a remarkable come back. They scored four tries in the space of 10 minutes. It was started off by winger Jackson Stuart in the 52nd minute, and quickly followed up by fellow winger Semi Valemi. Four minutes later, bench forward Ata Mariota crossed - and while there was a hint of a double movement, the referee ultimately pointed to the spot. The Raiders incredibly levelled the match in the 63rd minute, after Matt Timoko picked up a loose ball and scooted to the try line.

A frenzied final seven minutes followed. Toby Westcott missed a field goal shot, but the ball was touched in flight by the Panthers and they were forced into a line drop out. They recovered a short kick and went all the way to other end, before missing their own field goal attempt. The Raiders had one final opportunity to break the deadlock, but sadly Westcott's attempt was waved away.

This week: The Raiders remain in seventh place on the competition table - but they are two competitions point adrift of the fourth placed South Sydney Rabbitohs. This week they face the eighth placed Warriors - but they are right on the heels of the Raiders, trailing Canberra by two competition points. The Warriors are on a three game winning streak, with recent wins over the Eels (34-18), Sharks (16-12) and Bears (26-24). Two of those opponents are outside the eight, but win over the high flying Sharks is a very good result. Prior to that, the Warriors had not won a match in four appearances - a draw with the Victorian Thunderbolts (12-12) their best result.

Canberra ranks third in the league in attack, with the Warriors ranking equal sixth. The Raiders' defensive ranking has improved and now rank sixth for least points conceded - while the Warriors rank eighth.

Season record: Raiders 8 and 5, 2 draws (7th, +150)
Warriors 7 and 6, 2 draws (8th, +16)

Form: Raiders: LLWWD
Warriors: LLWWW

Attacking record: Raiders 28, Warriors 23 points scored per match
Defensive record: Raiders 18, Warriors 22 points conceded per match

Raiders record away: 5 and 2
Warriors record at home: 3 and 3

Raiders team changes: Jackson Stuart moves from wing to fullback, with Manase Kaho dropping out of the team. Gideon Afemui takes over the No. 5 jersey. The top 17 is otherwise unchanged.

Our tip: This is a match the Raiders "must win" if they are to keep their finals place secure. It is a very difficult task to travel to New Zealand and come away with the competition points, but that is just what the team has to do. The Raiders have the better attacking and defensive record and a slightly better season record - but the Warriors arguably have the better recent form. On balance, we'll go with the Green Machine to get the job done. Here's hoping they do it!

Jersey Flegg Match Preview: Raiders v Warriors

The Canberra Raiders’ Jersey Flegg side will look to make it four games without defeat when they take on the New Zealand Warriors at North Harbour Stadium on Saturday morning.

“Every game is big for us with the congestion of the ladder,” coach Ash Barnes said. “We’re two points in front of the Warriors and two points out of the four so it is really important for us to go there and perform.

6th min TRY WARRIORS to Tom Ale, chasing a grubber kick from centre Casey Smith. Emanuel Tuimavave-Gerrard has an easy conversion attempt... and it's one of the worst kicks you'll see that gets two points! Low, hits the post and somehow bounces over.

Great work from Harley Smith Shields to get out of the in goal now.

Since when has Jersey Flagg been on tv. I just saw the Foxtel logo on the NSW Cup site and thought it was a misprint. I think I have now set it to record back from the start. Going to golf will watch later.
