Good effort from the Raiders no disgrace going down by 2 in a Grand Final. Westcott with a 35 meter penalty kick to try to level the scores and just pushes it left after the final hooter has gone. I thought he had a good game though and looks to have the skills to make an NRL half. I also thought Medlyn and O'Donnell in the back row excelled. 5/8 Roberts was also good and for a little bloke very good in defence. Hodge in the front row and Paterson at hooker had some good moments. Tomoko and Valemi outstanding. Off the bench, Mariner and Vaalepu very good. I was expecting more from Smith-Shields. The nothing kick to nobody but Souths near the end was baffling to everyone.

Mounties will get an injection of quality young players next season.

I was very impressed with Timoko, O'Donnell and Mariner. The first 2 are definite first graders of the future.

The NRL should also show such an important game a bit more respect and have the video ref and proper coverage. I would've liked to see a number of plays again, particularly that break away called back for a South's penalty.
I would have also liked to have seen the Raiders 'No Try' again in the right hand corner where the touchie put his flag up for a foot on the touch line. Even at NRL level they have sometimes seen things no one else can see.

Can anybody shed light on what the penalty was for? Commentators hardly mentioned it.

I think the ref signalled it was for someone getting taken out.

Couldn't see anything like that. Will have to look at the replay. Game changing decision. I expected more scrutiny from the commentators.

Ref signalled a push by one of the Raider players. I had the green goggles on and didn't see a push. I thought they were about to break away for a try, but then it was all called back. I didn't see which Raider player the Ref thought had pushed, but its history now.

I thought they kept going short side to often in the first half. Westcott seemed to be set open side but not getting enough ball on the open side. Just watched it again and the send off was devastating for the team. At that level sides should score against 12. I thought Smith Sheilds looked out of sorts all game but its all history now. Keen to know who is going and staying

MATCH REPORT: South Sydney Rabbitohs outlast Canberra Raiders to take narrow victory in Jersey Flegg Grand Final

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are the 2019 Jersey Flegg Cup premiers after a drama-filled 16-14 victory over the Canberra Raiders at Bankwest Stadium.

There were incredible scenes after the siren when Souths were penalised for a deliberate forward pass. The Raiders had a chance to send the game into extra time with a kick at goal for a tough position, but it was waved away.

It was a deliberate forward pass. Old rule, but a good 'un. Unfortunately, it wasn't realistically in penalty goal range.

I thought the Raiders were the best team really... unfortunate result for the boys. That sin binning was probably warranted on balance, but it was very costly. Ten minutes in the bin at Under 20s level is an extremely harsh penalty. Probably a few lessons learned for the future, and the team is full of talent for the future. Smith Shields, Timoko are the backs that impress me most... future first graders. I like what Kyle Patterson brings at hooker, and there are a lot of forwards who are very good... Medlyn, O'Donnell both very good, but there's a lot to like about a number of the forwards.

Man i just watched the game again and geez we where unlucky! Heres my review of the GF players and there year as promised!
1. Harley Smith Sheilds-
Positives: runs the ball very hard back the deference and dangerous. Expect to be top 30 off this years efforts
Negatives: didnt seem to like finals pressure, not a future fullback but winger in my opinion.
2. Semi Velemi
Positives: great set starter and rips in. Big body that will benefit from a pre season
Negatives: bites in sometimes in defence but fixable. Definite Keeper
3.Gideon Afemui
Positives: another big unit who plays slightly off the cuff
Negatives: can push a pass at the wrong end of the feild.
4.Matthew Timoko
Positives: ruthless when he runs it. Massive leg drive and strength. Probably my fav player to watch
Negative: can sort of go missing at stages. Needs to stay right in it always
5. Manase Khao
Positives: plays like a Fijian rugby player and exciting
Negatives: pushes the pass at the wrong end sometimes
6. Joe Roberts.
Positives: traditional running 6. Outplayed Subloo to keep his spot in my opinion
Negatives: not to much other than loves short side plays to much.
7.Toby Westcott
Positives: great communicator and steering half. Kicking game would have to go close to best in comp
Negatives: needs time to mature. Hopefully they can hang onto him through NSW Cup
8.Tyson Hodge
Positives: tough and only young i think! Loves it in the middle
Negatives: nothing a good pre season and 5kg wouldnt fix
9. Kyle Patterson
Positives: specialist 9 and ruthless in defence. Another favourite
Negatives: tries to hard sometimes and needs to trust the structure.
10. Tom Robertson
Positives: big lad with some development still to go.
Negatives: can get caught out with ruck speed. Love to see him agro in defence
11. Lachlan Lewis
Positives: great defender and holds his edge up nicely
Negatives: nothing 5-10kg wouldn’t fix
12. Kai O’Donnell
Positives. Great work rate in attack
Negatives: has a lot of wraps that i am not seeing. If i was a coach i would be targeting him in defence as his first movement is always in causing pressure to his outside men all the time. Hope he can fix it( i had to get someone to explain to me what he was doing wrong :) )
13. Darby Medlyn
Positives: super consistent and reminds me of a Josh Jackson stye of player. Big future
Negatives: nothing. Great player
15. Silafano Titiuti
Positives: adds spark in the middle everytime he comes on. Rips in
Negative: can have a handling error or 2 in a game
16. Duwayne Mariner.
Positives: has improved all year. I think he was one of the lucky ones to get a chance in cup also
Negatives: Handling errors and carry
17. Jackson Stuart
Positives: pretty quick on his feet. Only young as well i think
Negatives: handling errors
18. Lazarus Vaalepu
Positives: big body!
Negatives: can get caught out around the ruck.

Hope we keep as many of these kids as we can. What a great year with an unfortunate end however total squad should be happy with there development over the year. Looking forward to this weekend and first grade but our club needs to taje this side seriously for future grade players.

Have to say... there's a lot of talent in that U20s team. Sadly, we don't have our own Canberra Raiders NSW Cup team, because I think the club could probably retain more of the players they've developed so well in Canberra - I know Mounties often aim to contract players who are not offered Raiders NRL/development contracts. But I think there'd be a clearer pathway, and keeping the players who've already settled in Canberra would be a plus for their development.

I’d add that Ash Barnes and Peter Mulholland and all involved really deserve congratulations on what they’re doing. Peter, of course, is legendary in the code. And Ash Barnes is clearly a very good young coach, given what he’s delivered at the Rams and now with Jersey Flegg.
