Lachlan Lewis was playing for Norths Devils HDC team. Another flame-haired backrower who loves to work originally from Bundaberg.

2019 Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg

Post by RTW »

Lewis is another from the Wavell SHS crop. Moved down to Brisbane in year 11 and made the QLD schoolboys team last year in year 12.

He is as tough as nails typical country red head kid and doesn’t mind working hard. I was really surprised that no one picked him up at the end of last year.

Glad to hear he has signed with us I have plenty of time for the kid.

Note: I just read. The article after posting and it pretty much says what I said.

Jersey Flegg Preview: Raiders v Eels

The Canberra Raiders’ Jersey Flegg team will be hoping to get back to winning ways this weekend when they face the Parramatta Eels at Ringrose Park this Sunday.

“There have been a few moments in the games that we haven’t been able to capitalise,” said Barnes. “It’s more about focusing on us and building up confidence in ourselves and our game.”

Preview

The Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team have had a two week break and will be back at home in Round 18 - playing their part in a double header at Canberra Stadium. The Green Machine meets the Wests Tigers in both matches - on a day when the Raiders celebrate the 30th anniversary of their first, first grade premiership.

Last round: The Raiders broke a three game losing steak in their last outing - defeating the Parramatta Eels, 28-16 at Ringrose Park. The Raiders piled on three tries in the first half - to hooker Kyle Patterson, centre Semi Valemei and second rower Kai O'Donnell - and went to the break with a healthy 18-6 lead.

Canberra went further in front after a dangerous tackle from Eels centre William Kei - with Toby Westcott kicking a penalty goal in the 47th minute. The Eels fought their way back into the contest, scoring two tries in the space of six minutes - through hooker Kyle Schneider and William Kei - and drawing within four points of the Raiders. But it was the Raiders that finished the stronger, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes. Kyle Paterson got his double with eight minutes remaining, stretching the lead to eight. And with just over a minute left on the clock, lock Tom Robertson got his own four pointer, icing the match.

This week: The Raiders have moved up one place on the competition table, to seventh - and now meet the 10th placed Wests Tigers. The Raiders drifted down the ladder after three consecutive losses. Now with seven games remaining in the regular season, they'll need to string some wins together if they're to keep in touch with, and challenge, the top four. They certainly can't afford to drop matches to teams below them on the ladder.

The Tigers produced a 38-24 win over the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Campbelltown Stadium in their last match - a good result over a team currently running sixth. Their only other recent win was over the Raiders, a 22-0 victory at Campbelltown. They have recorded recent losses to the Panthers (24-22), Knights (22-6) and Dragons (20-14).

The Raiders now rank third in the league in attack - behind the Knights and Panthers - and sixth in defence. Their defensive record is better than the Tigers, and their record is even better in attack.

Season record: Raiders 7 and 5, 1 draw (7th, +118)
Tigers 5 and 7, 1 draw (10th, -10)

Form: Raiders: WLLLW
Tigers: LWLLW

Attacking record: Raiders 28, Tigers 22 points scored per match
Defensive record: Raiders 19, Tigers 23 points conceded per match

Raiders record at home: 2 and 3
Eels record away: 2 and 2

Raiders team changes: Harley Smith-Shields and Matthew Timoko return to the team in the centres, with Semi Valemi moving to the left wing position, and Manase Kaho switching to the right. Jackson Stuart and Gideon Afemui drop out of the team. Tyson Hodge has been retained at starting prop and will be partnered by Duwanye Mariner, with Lazarus Vaalepu dropping to the bench. Darby Medlyn returns at lock, with Tom Robertson moving to the bench. Bench players Ata Mariota and Matt Dragisic have dropped out of the top 17.

Our tip: The Raiders' previous meeting with the Tigers, five weeks ago, is probably one that the Canberra outfit would prefer to forget. The Raiders were then running third, on the crest of a wave - but that day, nothing much went right. The Raiders didn't score a point and it was the start of their three game losing streak. They will be very keen to turn that performance around at Canberra Stadium. We know they have the capability to do so - given some of the performances they have produced this season. Both teams had good wins in their last matches, so it won't be easy. But we'll tip the Raiders to win at home - on a special day for the Green Machine.

Jersey Flegg Preview: Raiders v Tigers

The Canberra Raiders’ Jersey Flegg will look to make it two wins in a row this weekend when they take on the West Tigers at Canberra Stadium this Saturday afternoon.

“It was really good to get that win over Parramatta heading in the two weeks off,” said coach Ash Barnes. “Coming back, we’ve been building up into this last block of the season.”

Preview

The Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team are back on the road this week - and head to Penrith for a clash with the Panthers. It is part of a triple header at Panthers Stadium, one of the warm up games for the NRL match between the Raiders and Panthers.

Last week: The Raiders had a very good, 38-6, win over the Wests Tigers last Saturday afternoon. Just five weeks earlier against the Tigers at Campbelltown, the Raiders did not score in a 22 point defeat. But the Green Machine comprehensively turned that around at Canberra Stadium.

The Tigers were the first to score through prop forward Michael Fenn, who just barged through the line, a little too easily. But after that, it was all the Raiders. Winger Manase Kaho crossed out wide in the 14th minute, after the Raiders had forced a repeat set. Canberra took the lead for the first time when centre Harley Smith Shields crossed in the 32nd minute close to the posts. The conversion from Toby Westcott saw the Raiders take a 10-6 lead to the break.

Just three minutes into the second half, centre Matt Timoko made a break out wide, throwing a superb pass to Manase Kaho - who bagged his double. The Raiders kept up the pressure, and hooker Kyle Patterson drove through the Tigers' defensive line to score in the 47th minute. They then piled on three tries in the final 10 minutes, with second rower Kai O'Donnell, Timoko and winger Semi Valemi all crossing.

The Raiders ended the match with almost 60 per cent share of possession. The Tigers completion rate was just 52 per cent (compared with 69 per cent for the Raiders), while they conceded 11 penalties to four from the Raiders. Canberra dominated all the attacking statistics. They made more running metres (1384-976), line breaks (7-1) and tackle breaks (49-16). Meanwhile, the Tigers missed 49 tackles (Raiders 16) and made 16 ineffective tackles (Raiders 18).

This week: The Raiders remain in seventh place on the competition table - but they are now just one competition point adrift of the fourth placed Newcastle Knights. This week they have a very tough contest against the third placed Penrith Panthers. The Panthers produced a big 42-12 win over the Newcastle Knights at Panthers Stadium in their last match - and are now on a three game winning streak. They have also had recent wins over the Dragons (24-16) and the Tigers (24-22). The Raiders have now won two in a row.

Canberra ranks third in the league in attack - but Penrith ranks first, averaging more than 30 points scored per match. The Panthers also have a better defensive record than the Raiders, ranking third in the league for least points conceded - while the Raiders rank sixth.

Season record: Raiders 8 and 5, 1 draw (7th, +150)
Panthers 10 and 4 (3rd, +206)

Form: Raiders: LLLWW
Panthers: LLWWW

Attacking record: Raiders 28, Panthers 31 points scored per match
Defensive record: Raiders 18, Panthers 16 points conceded per match

Raiders record away: 5 and 2
Panthers record at home: 4 and 2

Raiders team changes: Fullback Daine Spencer has been promoted to Mounties. Manase Kaho takes over the No. 1 jersey and Jackson Stuart returns to the team filling the wing vacancy. Tom Robertson takes over the starting prop position from Duwanye Mariner, while Ata Mariota comes into the top 17 on the bench.

Our tip: The last time these two teams met was in Round 8 at Wagga Wagga - and on that day, the Raiders were big 37-12 winners. The Green Machine scored seven tries to two, holding the Panthers scoreless in the second half, while crossing four times themselves. If the Raiders are to beat the Panthers in this one - on the Panthers' home turf - they'll need to be as switched on as they were that day. The Panthers will no doubt be favoured to win, but we know the Raiders have the capability to defeat the Penrith side. Let's hope they can do it!

Jersey Flegg Match Preview: Raiders v Panthers

The Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg side will be looking for their third straight win this Sunday when they face the Penrith Panthers at Panthers Stadium.

“It was good to get players back last week either from injury or from playing NSW Cup,” coach Ash Barnes said. “Before that our win against Parramatta was a great one, so the team is feeling pretty pleased with themselves.”
