I see the Dogs lost last night so if we win on Sunday we are 5th at worst but probably in the top 4. Dragons who are about 8th next week.

Good player at this level, but I am not sure he will get a full time or development spot next year.

The club would be insane to let a kid with the natural kicking game he has go even if its just a spot with mounties in cup to let him mature. He hasnt been given an opportunity in mounties either i dont think with the Sezer/Williams debacle. Be interesting what happens with the rookie deals. Ohagan seems out of favour, Smith Sheilds or Niko to replace Abbey in top 30???, Starling and Patterson will be interesting but you cant have two hookers on rookie deals and Medlyn is a shoe in!. Im sure we will all talk about the ones that got away over the next few years. Regardless the NRL need to look at increasing the number of rookie deals to allow clubs to commit to home grown talent in particular when they have been forced to align with feeder clubs. I just hope the club nurture a spine and not a heap of backrowers that we already have an abundance of young prospects.

Smith Shields maybe into the top 30, very least development. I would be surprised if Abbey remains.

Kyle Patterson... very promising too.

Preview

Last week: The Canberra Raiders produced a huge 48-12 win over the Manly Sea Eagles at Canberra Stadium in Round 23 - with seven different players scoring a total of nine tries. The Raiders led 26-0 at half time. A highlight was some razzle dazzle after the half time siren when the Raiders simply refused to allow the ball to die - giving centre Gideon Afemui his double.

The second half had its share of controversy, with two dust ups leading to players being sent from the field. In the 49th minute, both Afemui and Sea Eagles prop Neihana Oldham were sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes. Matt Timoko quickly scored off the back of the penalty awarded to the Raiders as a result of the incident. Then five minutes later, Sea Eagles centre Dane Oostendorp-Power was sin binned after a scrum blew up. He was then recalled to the field after passing by the touch judge - and was sent off.

The Raiders scored four tries to two after the half time break, with Manase Kaho scoring a double. The best try of the match was the Raiders' last, with fullback Harley Smith-Shields making a sensational break from Canberra's own goal line. He fended off the only Manly defender who came close to him, while offloading to Kaho for the four pointer.

This week: The Raiders have moved up into fifth place on the competition table - and they are now level with the third placed Panthers and fourth placed Knights on 24 competition points. If the Raiders had scored a couple more converted tries on Sunday, they would be in third.

There is only one round of the regular season remaining - and the Raiders have a chance to force their way into the top four when they meet the eighth placed Dragons at Wollongong's Ziems Park.

On Sunday, the third placed Panthers should win over the Sea Eagles, who are in line for the wooden spoon. The Panthers should rack up a big score, as well. But the fourth placed Knights have a difficult assignment against the ladder leading Sharks on Saturday. Even if both the Knights and Raiders were to win - Canberra can get a valuable top four spot, if they can get the advantage on points differential. The Raiders presently have a points differential of +198, compared with +205 for the Knights. That's the size of the task for the Green Machine.

The Raiders' opponents this week, the Dragons, are on a three game winning streak. Last Saturday, they had a 42-22 win over the New Zealand Warriors at Kogarah - while two weeks ago, they had a big, 38-18, win over the high flying Sharks at Cronulla. However, prior to their winning streak, the Dragons had lost four in a row. The Raiders have lost one match in their past five.

Canberra now ranks fourth in the league in attack - after the Panthers put on 56 points against the Bears on the weekend - while the Dragons rank fifth. The Raiders are placed fifth for least points conceded, compared with the Dragons' sixth placing.

Season record: Raiders 11 and 6, 2 draws (5th, +198)
Dragons 10 and 8, 1 draw (8th, +132)

Form: Raiders: DWLWW
Dragons: LLWWW

Attacking record: Raiders 29, Dragons 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Raiders 18, Dragons 19 points conceded per match

Raiders record away: 7 and 2
Dragons record at home: 6 and 3

Raiders team changes: There are no changes announced to the team that took the field last week against the Sea Eagles. Harley Smith-Shields has been named in the No. 1 jersey, but also on the wing for Mounties. We can expect a late change at fullback in this match. Jarrett Subloo has been named at five eighth, despite leaving the field early last week with a leg injury.

Our tip: This game is another must win if the Green Machine is to make the top four and be a serious challenger in the finals. They face a lot tougher opposition in the Dragons this week. St George Illawarra's season record is not far away from that of the Raiders - and the match is being played on the Dragons' home turf. On the plus side, the Raiders are in good recent form and have a very good away record in their first season back in the competition. I'll tip a win for the Raiders on the road and a top four finish to the season. Here's hoping!

Canberra Raiders 28 defeated St George Illawarra Dragons 26

The Raiders move up to third on the live ladder! With the Knights losing today, that is enough for a top four finish.

If the Panthers win tomorrow, they finish third, the Raiders fourth. In that case the Raiders meet the first placed Sharks in Week 1 of the finals.

If the Panthers lose, against the wooden spooner, the Raiders finish third and they would meet the Roosters in a Week 1.

We finished 4th and play the top ranked Cronulla Sharks. Game is at Campbelltown next Saturday at 2.45pm.

Not sure if it will be streamed on the NSWRL website.

Of course will clash with first grade but would be good to watch the replay.
