MATCH REPORT: Jersey Flegg Canberra Raiders cruise past Penrith Panthers

The Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg side has put on an attacking masterclass this afternoon to defeat the highly fancied Penrith Panthers 37-12.

Halfback Toby Westcott slotted a late field goal to put the Raiders into a 31-12 lead however there was still time for one more as Daine Spencer worked his way inside from the wing to put the icing on the cake.

PREVIEW: The Canberra Raiders produced a very good victory over the ladder leading Penrith Panthers in Round 8 - and have now moved into fifth place. Coming into the match, the Panthers had the best attack and defence in the competition, but the Raiders held Penrith to just two tries while piling on seven themselves.

The Raiders shocked the Panthers early, scoring three tries in the opening 15 minutes, with four pointers to the centre pairing, Matt Timiko and Harley Smith Shields and to prop Charlie Rorke. The Panthers fought back with a double to centre Stephen Crichton, his second try in the 32nd minute reducing the Raiders' lead to just four points. The teams went to the break with Canberra leading 16-12, but it was all the Green Machine in the second half, posting four second half tries. Hooker Kyle Patterson scored a double. Half back Toby Westcott kicked a field goal with three minutes remaining, but the Raiders were not finished, with winger Daine Spencer crossing in the final minute. Westcott converted after the siren to produce the final 37-12 score line.

The Raiders' Jersey Flegg team heads to North Sydney Oval in Round 9, for a meeting with the 12th placed Bears on Sunday afternoon. The Bears have only one draw and six losses to their name. They are on a five game losing streak, losing 26-12 to the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Stadium Australia in their last outing. Their solitary competition point comes from a 30 all draw with the Rabbitohs at Redfern Oval in Round 2.

The Raiders have posted four wins, a draw and two losses - and have a LWLWW form line in their past five games. The Raiders now have the second best attack in the league, averaging 31 points per match, compared with just 13 for the Bears. The Raiders rank sixth in defence, conceding an average of 18 points per game. However the Bears are bottom three in the league in defence, conceding over 33 points per match.

Raiders team changes: The only change to the Raiders' starting line up sees Duwanye Mariner come in at lock, in place of Jesse Dent. Tyson Hodge comes into the 17 on the bench.

Our tip: Under the Mounties moniker last year, the Under 20s lost unexpectedly to the Bears at North Sydney. It is a difficult ground to play at and for an away team to get a victory. However, given the form lines, it's hard to go past the Raiders in this one.

PREVIEW: The Jersey Flegg competition gets back underway this weekend after general byes for the past two weeks. The Canberra Raiders produced a big 44-10 victory over the North Sydney Bears at Leichhardt Oval in their last outing, and have now moved into fourth place.

The Raiders led by just 10-0 at half time, following tries to centre Harley Smith Shields and second rower Kai O'Donnell inside the opening 15 minutes. But the Raiders really opened up after the break, scoring four tries in the space of 10 minutes - and taking a 32-0 lead by the 50th minute. The Bears scored two tries in the final 20 minutes, but they were never in the hunt. In all, the Raiders scored eight tries, with Harley Smith Shields and Kai O'Donnell bagging doubles.

The Raiders now travel to Belmore for a meeting with the eighth placed Canterbury Bulldogs this Saturday. The Bulldogs have had a four and three start to the season, with one draw. They started the year with a three match winning streak, but have a LLDWL form line in their past five games. They lost to the Newcastle Knights 32-20 in their last match in Round 8.

The Raiders have posted five wins, a draw and two losses so far this season. They are on a three game winning streak have lost just once in their past five games. The Raiders have the second best attack in the league, averaging 33 points per match - with the Panthers having scored just two more points over the opening eight rounds. The Raiders rank sixth in defence, conceding an average of 17 points per game. The Bulldogs have averaged 25 points scored per game, and conceded 20.

Raiders team changes: The Raiders have named an unchanged backline to the one that last ran out in Round 9 against the Bears. The only change in the starting forward line up sees Liam Mock replace Kyle Patterson at hooker. Joe Roberts comes in at No. 14 to cover Mock.

Our tip: A number of the Raiders Jersey Flegg players have played for Mounties in the NSW Cup in the past two weeks. Patterson, Smith Shields and lock Duwanye Mariner played last weekend for Mounties at Belmore - unfortunately a heavy 52-22 defeat. It was probably a happier afternoon for the trio in Round 10 when Mounties won 32-18 over the Rabbitohs.

Mariner is the only one of the three who is expected to play for Flegg this week. Kyle Patterson has not been named in any grade, while centre Harley Smith Shields has been concurrently named for Mounties' clash with the Bears this week. Mounties will no doubt take precedence, so a late change can be expected at centre for the Flegg team.

The Raiders have still named a strong team, despite the disruptions in the higher grades due to injury and Origin duty. Given the form lines, this is a match the Raiders will be favoured to win.

Thought he was best on ground by a fair way. Defence was excellent i think he had 3 try assists, kicked a 40/20 and 6 from 6 goals. Kicking game was great. i was sitting up behind the posts and he barks at the forward all the time but seems calm in play. I thought the big front rower had a good game also Silifano Titiuti. Medlyn solid again as was Timoko. They show a lot of maturity as a team and get into the grind really well. Goal line defence was great today. A well coached team obviously.

PREVIEW: The Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team is again on the road this week, and head to Campbelltown Stadium for a double header - playing prior to a NSW Cup clash between Raiders affiliate Mounties and the Western Suburbs Magpies.

The Raiders produced a good 36-16 victory over the Canterbury Bulldogs at Belmore Sports Ground in their last outing, and have now moved into third place on the ladder. The Bulldogs scored the opening two tries, with fullback Declan Casey bagging a double - and giving the home team a 12-0 at the 25th minute. Raiders fullback Daine Spencer got one back in the 30th minute, allowing the Bulldogs to head to the break with a 12-6 lead.

In the second half, it was almost all one way traffic for the Green Machine, with Canberra piling on five tries. They scored three in the the space of 10 minutes, through Jarrett Subloo, Brigham Moeakiola and Silafano Titiuti - with Canberra taking a 24-12 lead after 55 minutes. The Bulldogs narrowed the gap after a try to winger Blake Clayton five minutes later. But the Raiders went on to finish the job with tries to prop Charlie Rorke and hooker Liam Mock inside the final six minutes.

Canberra's opponent this week, the 10th placed Wests Tigers, has a three and five record so far this season. The Tigers won three straight earlier in the season, between Rounds 4 and 6 - but are now on a four game losing streak, suffering some big losses to the Sharks (40-16) and Rabbitohs (58-18) along the way. They lost by just two points to the Roosters (14-12) in Round 8. Last Saturday at Leichhardt Oval, they were defeated by the St George Illawarra Dragons, 20-14, despite both team scoring three tries apiece.

The Raiders have posted six wins, a draw and two losses so far this season - and are now on a four game winning streak. The Raiders rank equal second in the league in attack, alongside the Newcastle Knights, averaging 33 points per match. The Panthers are the only team to have scored more points (10) over the course of the season. The Raiders rank sixth in defence, conceding an average of 17 points per game. The Tigers have averaged 23 points scored per game, and conceded 26. They are ranked equal ninth in attack, and 11th for least points conceded.

Raiders team changes: Kai O'Donnell returns to the second row, with Tom Robertson dropping back to the bench. Darby Medlyn has been named on the bench for Mounties, so we can expect another player to come into the second row on the day. Matt Dragisic drops out of the 17, but he may well be the player included late.

Our tip: The Raiders have been rolling along nicely, and continued their good run of form last week, despite the loss of regular hooker Kyle Patterson to Mounties. The team is fairly settled, and will be stronger for the return of Kia O'Donnell. Given the form lines, this should be another good win for the Green Machine.

Round 12 Jersey Flegg highlights: To come.

Jersey Flegg Preview: Raiders v Tigers

The Raiders in-form Jersey Flegg team travel to Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday afternoon, to take on the Wests Tigers in round 13.

“We’ve been winning games and seeing improvement, but we haven’t quite reached our best just yet,” coach Ash Barnes said. “Having said that I’m very happy with the week to week improvement of the team and how they are working hard for each other.”

26th min TRY TIGERS to centre Zac Cini. The Wests Tigers have had lots of possession and territory... lots of penalties as well. Canberra’s defence has been very good but they finally cracked. Converted from out wide.

Tigers 6-0
