Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 5 Wrap

The teams at the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder continued on their winning ways in Round 5. The ladder leaders, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, secured a victory at home over the Gungahlin Bulls, while the second placed Queanbeyan Blues gave the Yass Magpies a 60-12 footballing lesson. The third placed Goulburn Bulldogs also put on 60 points in their clash with the Sharks.

At Seiffert Oval, it was all one way traffic. The Blues led 32-0 at half time, putting on five tries to nil - with the Magpies not scoring their first points until the 53rd minute. Terry Campese was the orchestra leader, with hooker Joel Munro, half Jordan Williams and forward Jack Williams having busy days. Terry Campese had a perfect day with the boot, the only Blues' goal attempt that was missed was the last, by Ilija Cotric.

In the first half, the tries flowed quickly and easily for the Blues. Prop Josh Hitchins started the scoring for the Queanbeyan outfit in the third minute and that was followed up by Joel Munro as the quarter hour mark ticked over. Campese set up a try for prop Aidan Woods in the 20th minute, with a great pass - and he then kicked two goals, after it was deemed an "eight point try" for a foul on Woods as it was scored.

The captain-coach was back in the action in the 31st minute, backing up after a Jack Williams break down the middles of the field - and earning his own four pointer. Another great run from Jack Williams set the platform for the next try as well, with Jordan Williams going over in the 35th minute. And guess who produced the try assist? Yes, it was another good pass from Terry Campese.

The Blues powered on after half time. A good dummy half run from Joel Munro led to a Matthew Cole try, before Jack Williams went on another rampage. He produced an incredible run, stepping, dummying and bulldozing his way to the try line for four points. That produced a 44-0 lead for the Blues before the 50th minute had passed.

Even though it was the 53rd minute, it felt like a consolation try for the Magpies when Autunaia Tupou crossed for Yass. And five minutes later, the Blues were back at it - hitting 50 after Josh Stuckey touched down, following a Jordan Williams kick ahead.

The Magpies scored their second, and final, try of the afternoon in the 65th minute - through Mitchell Turner, while the Blues had Zac Patch in the sin bin. Joel Monaghan iced the cake with a double in the final stages. First off it was "Bombaghan" in the 72nd minute, with Terry Campese bombing to the try line for a leaping Monaghan - bringing back one of their favourite plays from a time when they were donned in green. And in the final minute, Campese sent Monaghan down the touchline for a further try, out wide.

At Greenway, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers posted a 26-6 victory over the Bulls. The Bushies scored first, in the fifth minute, capitalising on a Bulls error in their own red zone - with winger Connor Massen going over out wide. They followed up in the 22nd minute when speedster Jayden Pollard intercepted a Jake Scholes pass and ran the length to score beside the posts. The Bushrangers defended well in the lead up to half time, going to the break with a 10-0 lead.

In the 54th minute, prop Jayden Thomas scored - before the Bulls hit back in the 66th minute through second rower Jayden Grocott, who took two or three defenders with him over the line. But that was as good as it got for Gungahlin. The Bushies scored two tries in the final 10 minutes. A good run from Thomas put on four points for Josh Baker, before a break from Drury Low set up a try for winger Tristan Eldridge in the final minutes.

In other matches, the Woden Valley Rams won 24-22 over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in a close contest at Phillip, while the Goulburn Bulldogs comprehensively defeated the Belconnen United Sharks, 60-20 at Goulburn.

Jarrad Kennedy stars for Tuggeranong Bushrangers in Canberra Raiders Cup

There is no price tag fitting for Tuggeranong Bushrangers back-rower Jarrad Kennedy. So says Tuggeranong coach Jarrad Teka, because quite simply "he's invaluable, that bloke".

"We haven't quite hit our straps yet in terms of what we can potentially do with the ball and it's affecting his attacking game. But the stuff he does off the ball and in defence, it really lifts the blokes," Teka said.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 6 Preview

Image

Round 6 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a rematch of the 2018 Grand Final, with the Tuggeranong Bushrangers hosting the Woden Valley Rams at Greenway on Saturday.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Woden Valley Rams

The Rams won an epic premiership decider last season by a solitary point. The match looked to be all over after 50 minutes, when the Rams went to a 30-0 lead - but the Bushrangers then staged the most remarkable come back, piling on 30 points of their own. A Lincoln Withers field goal inside the final five minutes ultimately proved to be the difference. And when the final siren sounded, the Rams had extended their unbeaten run to 13 games and had taken their first premiership title in 22 years.

In 2019, it is the Bushrangers that are undefeated and they sit atop the premiership ladder - while the Rams are placed fifth. The Rams started the season with wins over the Magpies and Sharks, but their unbeaten run came to an end in Round 3, when they suffered a 20 point loss to the Bulldogs. They also unexpectedly lost to the Bulls in Round 4 by two - before righting the ship with a narrow 24-22 win last weekend over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

The Bushies won their fourth straight match in their last outing, a 26-6 win over the Bulls. Bushrangers coach Jarrad Teka wasn't entirely happy with the performance - but is happy his team is winning, despite not yet being at their peak.

"The best thing with us is we probably haven't hit our straps yet. We've got a lot to work on within our club but we are getting wins at the moment so obviously that's a positive," Teka told The Canberra Times.

The two teams have a similar attacking record in 2019, with Tuggeranong averaging 27 points scored per match, and the Rams 26. But Tuggeranong has the advantage in defence - indeed, the Bushies have the best defence in the competition so far this season. They have conceded an average of 17 points per match, compared with 23 for the Rams.

There were some injury concerns emerging for the Bushrangers after last weekend, with Wezley Alexander, Matt Dragisic and Daniel Hickson expected to be out this week. But given the form lines, we'll tip a Tuggeranong win in this one at home.

If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Belconnen United Sharks V Yass Magpies

The teams at the foot of the ladder, the Belconnen United Sharks and Yass Magpies, meet at O'Connor. The Sharks have shown signs of being more competitive in 2019, but they are the only team yet to post a win this season. The Magpies have one win and four losses to their name, their only victory coming against the Bulls in Round 3 at Walker Park.

Last week, both teams conceded 60 points to their opposition. The Magpies were handed a footballing lesson by the Blues in a 48 point defeat. The same could be said for the Sharks, defeated 60-20 by the Goulburn Bulldogs. Both teams have conceded an average of over 40 points per game - with the Magpies having a slightly worse defensive record. Yass has the slightly better attack, averaging 20 points scored per match, compared with 17 for the Sharks. It's almost a flip of a coin tipping this one... but we'll go with the Sharks to get their first win at home.

West Belconnen Warriors V Goulburn Bulldogs

The fourth placed West Belconnen Warriors host the third placed Goulburn Bulldogs - in what shapes as one of the best contests of the round. The Warriors are coming off the bye - after suffering a 44-22 loss to the Queanbeyan Blues in Round 4. The Bulldogs meanwhile, showed they were back in the business of piling on points last week - after losing their first match of the season to the Bushrangers in Round 4, 24-18.

While the two teams are only separated by two competition points, the Bulldogs have had a 4 and 1 start to season 2019, compared with a 2 and 2 record for the Warriors. The ladder leading Bushrangers are the only other team to have won four games so far.

The Bulldogs have rebuilt their team strongly, with the Cornish brothers in the halves and hooker James Aubusson leading the way. But the Warriors have some handy men in their play making roles as well, with the experienced Brent Crisp and Bobby Roberts steering the team in the halves.

Goulburn has the better attack and defence. They have scored over 200 points in five games (an average 43 points per match, compared with 34 for the Warriors) while conceding 94 (an average 19 points per match, 30 for the Warriors). It should be a great contest, and even though the match will be played on the Warriors' home turf, this should be a Bulldogs win.

Gungahlin Bulls V Queanbeyan Blues

On Sunday, the undefeated Queanbeyan Blues travel to Gungahlin for a meeting with the Bulls. The Blues produced a very big 60-12 victory last weekend over the the Yass Magpies. It was virtually all one way traffic. The Blues led 32-0 at half time - with the Magpies not scoring their first points until the 53rd minute. Terry Campese was the orchestra leader, with hooker Joel Munro, half Jordan Williams and forward Jack Williams making a big impact.

The Blues have now won three and drawn one match this season, while the Bulls have recorded a one and three start to the year. The Bulls upset the Rams in Round 4, but then lost to the Bushrangers, 26-6, in their last outing. The Blues rank first in attack, based on points scored per match. They've posted an average 45 points per game, compared with just 16 for the Bulls. The Blues also have the second best defence, after the Bushrangers, conceding an average 19 points per game, compared with 39 for the Bulls. It would be a huge upset if the young Bulls can produce a win in this game.

Woden Valley Rams coach Lincoln Withers calls on ex-Canberra Raiders

Ken Nagas and David Atkins have been welcomed into the Woden Rams fold as coach Lincoln Withers looks to spread the load ahead of a grand final rematch against the Tuggeranong Bushrangers on Saturday.

"I try to get them to do a bit of the coaching stuff, and then that leaves me to do a bit more on-field," Withers said. "Axe runs a lot of the defence and the forwards stuff, and Kenny overlooks a lot of it too."

Woden Rams claim Canberra Raiders Cup thriller over Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The conventional play would be for Lincoln Withers to kick for touch and hope his side can hold out one, maybe two plays. The Rams scored 20 unanswered points to claim the spoils in a grand final rematch, and Daine Spencer's try was the icing on the cake on Saturday.

"I don't think we'll get him [Spencer] back for the rest of the year, I think he'll be up for bigger and better things with the Raiders [under 20s] but it was good for him to come back and play with the boys from last year and enjoy what is probably his last game [with Woden].

Gungahlin Bulls claim big scalp in Canberra Raiders Cup upset

The Gungahlin Bulls have claimed their second big scalp in three weeks after toppling the Queanbeyan Blues 24-22 in the Canberra Raiders Cup at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval on Sunday.

"We had Brendan O'Hagan come back from the Raiders again, he's that cool, calm head that helped steer us around again. Our middles really stood up" Bulls coach David Howell said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 6 Wrap

It was a weekend of upsets in Round 6 of the Canberra Raiders Cup, with the three top teams on the ladder all upset by their opponents.

The Woden Valley Rams produced a big comeback in the 2018 Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final rematch on Saturday at Greenway - handing out another defeat for the Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

In the Grand Final last year, the Rams were victorious by just one point, a Lincoln Withers field goal breaking a 30-30 deadlock in the final five minutes. The Rams went to a 30-0 lead before the Bushrangers produced an incredible 30 point comeback - only to be pipped at the post.

On Saturday, the Rams trailed the 2019 ladder leaders, the Bushrangers 18-6, with just over 20 minutes remaining. And then Woden took control, piling on 20 points to take a 26-18 victory. It was the first defeat of the season for Tuggeranong.

The Rams were the first to score, with prop Tyson Hodge crashing over from close range in the 15th minute. The Bushrangers struck back in the 20th minute, with a spectacular try to winger Connor Massey. Five eighth Rob Sheffield made a very good break through the middle, and produced a very well weighted kick ahead for his winger, for the try in the corner. Tuggeranong followed up in the 35th minute, when second rower Josh Baker went over under the posts - with half Michael Brophy setting Baker on his run with a clever inside pass.

The Bushies took a 12-6 lead to the break - and they extended that just three minutes into the second half, after a dummy half pass from Josh Mitchell sent Jarrad Kennedy over the try line. That gave the home team an 18-6 lead - but it would be the last of the scoring for Tuggeranong.

Woden started their comeback in the 59th minute, with dummy half Mitch Souter and five eighth James Desaxe sending the ball wide to centre Michael Geiger for a four pointer. Ten minutes later, Geiger produced a great offload to his winger Caleb Malisauskas, who scored in the corner. And while Lincoln Withers could not convert from the sideline, the Rams were within four points of the Bushrangers.

With around five minutes left on the clock, Mitch Souter was in action again, setting up Steve Ferry for a run to the line. And though he collided with a goal post, he still managed to ground it, just to the left of the post. The conversion from Withers saw Woden take a 20-18 lead. And then in the final moments, a last tackle play from Lincoln Withers sent fullback Daine Spencer away for a stunning match-sealer.

"I saw Daine and he normally comes up with the goods, the young kid. I just got him the ball and he did what he does. He's strong, he's fast, he's probably too good for the local competition," Withers told The Canberra Times later.

Withers expects he'll lose Spencer to the Raiders Jersey Flegg team once the Under 20s gets back underway. He's certainly a great prospect.

On Sunday, the Gungahlin Bulls produced a huge 24-22 upset of the Queanbeyan Blues in Canberra's far north. The Blues have been in raging hot form, previously undefeated. The closest they'd come to defeat was a draw with cross town rivals, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The Bulls had previously produced just one win this year - a two point upset against the Rams in Round 4. The giant killers were at it again in Round 6.

The Bulls had Canberra Raiders youngster Brendan O'Hagan on deck in the Bulls win over the Rams - and he was available again this week. He clearly makes a huge difference to the team. He started the scoring against the Blues in the eighth minute, when he put in a cross field kick for centre Isimeli Vatanitawake. It was a perfectly placed kick, a perfect four pointer.

But the Blues then took back control. In the 13th minute, Blues winger Nicolas Marshall went over in the corner after Terry Campese shovelled the ball wide. Marshall got a double in the 26th minute, backing up a Joel Monaghan break. Monaghan was brought to ground by the Bulls' defence, but was not effectively tackled, and he legally offloaded off the grass for the try scorer. Just before the break, a kick ahead from Blues half Zac Patch produced confusion in the in goal for the Bulls - and second rower Michael Cullen was able to ground it. The Campese conversion gave the visitors a 16-6 half time lead.

The second half started perfectly for the Bulls. They kicked off, and the ball bounced awkwardly for Queanbeyan, and Bulls winger Jone Pio stormed onto the ball. It gave Gungahlin early possession and territory and centre Ryan Cronin was able to get over the line in the 42nd minute. Pio was the game breaker at the back end of the game. He scored out wide in the 56th minute - the conversion giving the Bulls an 18-16 lead. And then he got his double inside the final 10 minutes, Gungahlin's lead extending to eight points.

The Blues managed to cross through fullback Matthew Cole, with just a few minutes left. While the Blues desperately tried to conjure a miracle try in the final minutes, they were not able to overcome the two point deficit.

In other matches, the more favoured Goulburn Bulldogs lost to the West Belconnen Warriors, 38-22, at Kippax, with Ryan McQueen scoring a hat trick. And at O'Connor, the Belconnen United Sharks got their first win of the year - and their first since 2017- defeating the Yass Magpies, 18-6.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 7 Preview

Image

Round 7 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a top three clash between the third placed Goulburn Bulldogs and second placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos this Sunday.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Queanbeyan Blues

In Round 6, all of the top three teams were defeated. The Bulldogs travelled to Kippax last Saturday for a clash with the West Belconnen Warriors - and started well, going to a 16-0 lead through tries to Jason Gray and brothers Mitch and Nick Cornish. But then the Warriors hit back. They levelled the scores by half time, and went on with the job in the second half, securing a 38-22 victory. It was the Bulldogs' second loss of the season, the other coming against the ladder leading Bushrangers in Round 4.

On Sunday, the Blues suffered a huge 24-22 upset at the hands of the Bulls in Canberra's far north. The Blues have been in raging hot form, previously undefeated. The closest they'd come to defeat was a draw with cross town rivals, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The Bulls had previously produced just one win this year - a two point upset against the Rams in Round 4. The Bulls had Canberra Raiders youngster Brendan O'Hagan on deck in their win over the Rams - and he was available again last week. He clearly makes a huge difference to the team. The Blues had a 16-6 advantage at half time, but the Bulls had the better of the second half. A double to Bulls winger Jone Pio saw the home team go to an eight point lead, with less than 10 minutes remaining. The Blues scored through fullback Matthew Cole with two minutes remaining - but that was not enough.

The Blues are in slightly better form than the Bulldogs so far this season, and have a slightly better attacking and defensive record. With the Bulldogs having the home ground advantage, it should be a great contest. On form, we'll go with the Blues in this one.

Season record: Bulldogs 4 and 2 (3rd, +102)
Blues 3 and 1, 1 draw (2nd, +104)

Form: Bulldogs WWLWL
Blues WDWWL

Attacking record: Blues 40, Bulldogs 39 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 20, Bulldogs 22 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:
2018 Rd 7: Blues 40 defeated Bulldogs 10 at Goulburn Arena
2018 Rd 16: Blues 44 defeated Bulldogs 12 at Seiffert Oval

West Belconnen Warriors V Belconnen United Sharks

The Warriors closed the gap on the leading teams after last week's win over the Bulldogs - and now host the eighth placed Sharks in the Belconnen derby at Kippax. The Warriors are now level with the Bulldogs on eight competition points, and just two competition points behind the first placed Bushrangers. The Sharks won their first match of the season - and their first game since 2017 - against the struggling Yass Magpies, 16-6. But it will be a much bigger challenge for the Sharks against the Warriors. West Belconnen have veteran halves Brent Crisp and Bobby Roberts very effectively controlling the action, while fullback Ryan McQueen is in fine form, scoring a hat trick last week. The Warriors clearly have the better form and record so far this season - and should have too much firepower for the Sharks.

If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Season record: Warriors 3 and 2 (4th, +30)
Sharks 1 and 4 (8th, -84)

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Gungahlin Bulls

The seventh placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos host the sixth placed Gungahlin Bulls at Freebody Oval. The Kangaroos are coming off the bye, after suffering a narrow 24-22 loss to the Woden Valley Rams in their last outing. The Roos have only won one match so far this season, the Bulls two - but it is the Kangaroos that have probably produced the more consistent form. That is underlined by the fact that the Roos have a significantly better attacking and defensive record than the Bulls - and attack and defence that compares fairly well with teams well up the ladder.

The Bulls have now upset two of the big guns of the competition - the Woden Valley Rams and the Queanbeyan Blues by exactly the same scoreline, 24-22. It is no coincidence that the wins have come in the two games when Brendan O'Hagan turned out for the Bulls - and their chances may well depend on whether he is available for this game. If not, the Kangaroos will probably be too strong at home.

Season record: Kangaroos 1 and 3, 1 draw (7th, +20)
Bulls 2 and 3 (6th, -92)

Form: Kangaroos LDLWL
Bulls LLWLW

Attacking record: Kangaroos 30, Bulls 17 points scored per match
Defensive record: Kangaroos 26, Bulls 36 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:
2018 Rd 1: Kangaroos 34 defeated Bulls 30 at Gungahlin
2018 Rd 10: Kangaroos defeated Bulls at Freebody Oval

Yass Magpies V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

This is a clash between first and last on the ladder - and it, unfortunately, shapes as a bit of a mismatch. Last week, the Bushrangers lost their first match of the season, while the Magpies lost out to the Sharks in the battle for the wooden spoon spot. Attack is not the Bushies' relative strength so far this season - but their record is clearly stronger than the Magpies. Tuggeranong has an even clearer advantage in defence. The Bushrangers have the best defence in the competition, the Magpies the worst, by a fair margin. Tuggeranong should win this contest, and win it well.

Season record: Magpies 1 and 5 (9th, -131)
Bushrangers 4 and 1 (1st, +30)

Form: Magpies LWLLL
Bushrangers WWWWL

Attacking record: Bushrangers 25, Magpies 17 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 19, Magpies 39 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:
2018 Rd 4: Bushrangers 20 defeated Magpies 14 at Walker Park
2018 Rd 13: Bushrangers 42 defeated Magpies 4 at Greenway

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 7 Wrap

Image

The Belconnen United Sharks produced a huge upset in Round 7 of the Canberra Raiders Cup - winning two matches in a row, after not having won a single game since 2017. In their breakthrough win, they defeated fellow cellar dwellers, the Yass Magpies. But on Sunday, they defeated the fourth placed West Belconnen Warriors, 26-12 in a gripping contest.

The Sharks put on the pressure from the opening whistle scoring the first try of the match after just five minutes through centre John Vejvoda. It was a simple try from dummy half, but it was the result of some sustained attack on the Warriors' line. The visitors were over again in the 19th minute, when prop Brandon Nangaiti charged over from close range - the conversion from Tevita Aroha Tuinauvai giving the Sharks a 12-0 lead.

The Warriors threatened when winger Trent Vaughan made a stunning run downfield, and it looked like he would be certain to go over in the corner - but winger Mun Mapiou bundled him into touch. Efforts like that seemed to lift the Sharks' defensive intensity even further.

In the 35th minute, a bomb from Tevita Aroha Tuinauvai was mishandled by the Warriors - giving the Sharks another opportunity to raid the West Belconnen line. And shortly afterwards, Matthew Butz, who shifted late to hooker, went over under the posts. The Sharks held the Warriors scoreless in the first half, and went to the break with a shock 18-0 lead.

In the 49th minute, the Sharks extended their lead by two points, after the Warriors were penalised for a strip, almost in front of the goal posts. It was an opportunity too good for Aroha Tuinauvai to pass up and he potted the easy goal.

But then the Warriors fought back. In the 56th minute, centre Brandon Withers scored West Belconnen's first tre of the match, after second rower Tyler Peters had made a big break up field. The conversion from Brent Crisp reduced the deficit for the home team to 14 points. Six minutes later, the Warriors took advantage when the Sharks were reduced to 12 men. Prop Sonny Tupuola was sin binned for a professional foul on the try line and Tyler Peters crossed the white line almost immediately. With the Sharks' lead reduced to eight, suddenly it was game on.

In a tense final quarter of the match, the Warriors had plenty of opportunity to put on more points. But the Sharks' defence just kept on turning up. With five minutes remaining, Brent Crisp forced a line drop out, but again the Sharks held on, the set ending with a Warriors' knock on. The Sharks took the ball to the other end of the field... and after a controversial knock on ruling against the Warriors on their own line, United's Sonny Tupuloa crashed over for the match sealing try. It was a stunning end to the match - and the emotional outpouring from the Sharks players was the sort you see in a finals match.

In other matches, the Goulburn Bulldogs defeated the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 36-24, the victory allowing the Bulldogs to jump over the Blues into second place on the competition ladder. The Tuggeranong Bushrangers maintained their hold over first place, with a 28-16 win over the last placed Yass Magpies. And at Freebody Oval, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos produced a big 52-10 win over last week's giant killers, the Gungahlin Bulls.

Belconnen United Sharks bite West Belconnen Warriors in the Battle of Belco

The Belconnen Sharks nearly forgot the words of their team song as they clung to the bottom half of the Raiders Cup ladder. But now they've filled the Sharks shed with the celebratory chant for the second consecutive week after defeating the Warriors 26-12 in the battle of Belconnen.

"The game was built on our defence and our attitude towards keeping them out," coach Scott Logan said.

Haydon Hodge stars in Goulburn Bulldogs victory

Goulburn Bulldogs coach Adam Kyle praised the performance of Haydon Hodge after Sunday's defeat of the Queanbeyan Blues.

"He's the most humble guy I think I've met as a footballer who's played at the level that he has," coach Adam Kyle said. "There's nothing I can ask of him that he won't do for me. We played him last year at fullback and he worked the absolute house down every week. We talked about moving him into the forward pack this year just to change up his workload and we thought we could get some different skill out of him and he's been great there.

Errors prove costly for Yass Magpies against Tuggeranong Bushrangers

Yass Magpies coach Cam Hardy knows his side has the right ingredients to challenge any of the top sides in the Canberra Raiders Cup, it is just a matter of finding the right mixture.

"We're constantly making errors and the errors lead to points," Hardy said. "If you're going to make the errors and you can't defend them, you've got a long 80 minutes ahead of you. That's been the name of the story so far."

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 8 Preview

Image

Round 8 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a top four clash between the fourth placed Queanbeyan Blues and ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers this Saturday at Seiffert Oval.

Queanbeyan Blues V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

After an undefeated start to the season, the Queanbeyan Blues have now lost two in a row, falling last weekend to the Goulburn Bulldogs, 36-24, at Goulburn Arena. The Bulldogs and Blues were level at half time, but three tries in the space of 15 minutes put the Bulldogs on the path to victory. The loss follows a 24-22 upset at the hands of the Gungahlin Bulls in Round 6. The Bushrangers have lost just once this season, to the Woden Valley Rams, 28-18, in Round 6. They come into this match off a 28-16 victory over the last placed Yass Magpies at Greenway.

This is a clash between the team with the best attack against the team with the best defence. The Bushrangers are not piling on a lot of points in their matches, and only rank sixth for points scored. But they are the best defensive team in the the league, conceding 19 points per game. The Queanbeyan Blues are second only to the Bulldogs for total points scored - but are equal first with the Bulldogs for points scored per match. The Blues defence is not too shabby either, and they rank equal second with the Rams for fewest points conceded. It should be a great clash, but given the Blues recent form, we will tip a win for the Bushies on the Blues' home turf.

Season record: Blues 3 and 2, 1 draw (4th, +92)
Bushrangers 5 and 1 (1st, +42)

Form: Blues DWWLL
Bushrangers WWWLW

Attacking record: Blues 38, Bushrangers 26 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 22, Bushrangers 19 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:
2018 Rd 9: Bushrangers 42 defeated Blues 8 at Seiffert Oval
2018 Rd 18: Bushrangers 46 defeated Blues 18 at Greenway

Gungahlin Bulls V Goulburn Bulldogs

Also on Saturday, the eighth placed Bulls host the second placed Goulburn Bulldogs at Gungahlin Enclosed. The Bulls have produced a couple of big recent upsets against the Woden Valley Rams and the Queanbeyan Blues, coincidentally winning by the same 24-22 scoreline. However, in their last outing, they were handed a heavy 52-10 defeat by the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freeboday Oval. The Bulls' victories have come in the two games when young Canberra Raiders half Brendan O'Hagan was available - but they have not performed as well without him. O'Hagan is again with Mounties this weekend, and they might struggle against the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs have been travelling well, losing just twice - to the Bushrangers in Round 4 and the Warriors in Round 6. They were getting back to their best in their win over the Blues last weekend. The Bulldogs have been missing fullback Tyler Cornish (jaw) since Round 2, but they still have brothers Mitch and Nick Cornish in the halves, and the experienced James Aubusson to steer the team around.

Last weekend, former Raider, Haydon Hodge shifted from the forwards to fullback - his former stamping ground - and was instrumental in getting the win for the Dogs. Coach Adam Kyle was full of praise for Hodge and his team after the win.

"We're so lucky this year, the depth we've got in our squad this year is fantastic," Kyle told The Goulburn Post. "Whether Hodgy stays there long term, I'm not too sure, but it's great to have a club where we've got so many great players pushing through and every spot is up for grabs every week."

We're tipping the Bulldogs will have a good win in this match. If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Season record: Bulls 2 and 4 (8th, -134)
Bulldogs 5 and 2 (2nd, +114)

Form: Bulls LWLWL
Bulldogs WLWLW

Attacking record: Bulls 16, Bulldogs 38 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 38, Bulldogs 22 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:
2018 Rd 2: Bulldogs 26 defeated Bulls 8 at Canberra Stadium
2018 Rd 11: Bulldogs 32 defeated Bulls 18 at Gungahlin

Belconnen United Sharks V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Belconnen United Sharks produced a huge upset last weekend - winning two matches in a row, after not having won a single game since 2017. In their breakthrough win, they defeated fellow cellar dwellers, the Yass Magpies. But last Sunday, they defeated the fourth placed West Belconnen Warriors, 26-12 in a gripping contest. Long suffering Sharks coach Scott Logan, was just as thrilled as his team with the victory.

"The game was built on our defence and our attitude towards keeping them out," Logan told The Canberra Times after the match. "The guys had been working really hard at training and they were able to transition that onto the field. It was an all-round effort by the whole team."

The seventh placed Sharks now host the sixth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos at O'Connor on Saturday. It is unfamiliar territory for the Kangaroos, who have become used to being close to the top of the competition ladder over the past decade, under the guidance of coach Aaron Gorrell. The Roos still only have two wins to their name against the Yass Magpies and Gungahlin Bulls - but their form appears to be on an upward trend. Their two most recent losses, to the Rams and the Warriors, were by a margin of only two points. Last week they put on 50 points, with half Tre Williams scoring five tries. We expect they'll be far too strong for the Sharks - but we hadn't tipped the Sharks in the last two rounds either. There should be a whole pile of Sharks' supporters turning out for this game at home. O'Connor will be buzzing.

Season record: Sharks 2 and 4 (7th, -70)
Kangaroos 2 and 3, 1 draw (6th, +62)

Form: Sharks LLLWW
Kangaroos DLWLW

Attacking record: Sharks 18, Kangaroos 33 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 30, Kangaroos 23 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:
2018 Rd 7: Kangaroos 50 defeated Sharks 12 at Freebody Oval
2018 Rd 16: Kangaroos 34 defeated Sharks 6 at O'Connor

Woden Valley Rams V West Belconnen Warriors

The third place Woden Valley Rams host the West Belconnen Warriors at Phillip - in what shapes as another terrific contest. The Rams are coming off the bye, but are aiming for their third straight win on Saturday, having accounted for the first placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers in their last outing. The Warriors head into the match after being upset by the Sharks at home last Sunday. When you look at the form lines and attacking and defensive records, there is not much between the two teams. However, the 2018 premiers look to have a slight edge, based on recent performances - so we'll tip Woden on their home ground.

Season record: Rams 4 and 2 (3rd, +21)
Warriors 3 and 3 (5th, +16)

Form: Rams WLLWW
Warriors WWLWL

Attacking record: Rams 26, Warriors 31 points scored per match
Defensive record: Rams 22, Warriors 28 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:
2018 Rd 4: Warriors 32 defeated Rams 22 at Kippax
2018 Rd 13: Rams 30 defeated Warriors 4 at Phillip

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Kangaroos five-try hero Tre Williams happy back at home

A chance to reunite with some of his junior teammates and be in the same city as his family convinced a homesick Tre Williams to come back to the Canberra Raiders Cup this year.

"It was a good opportunity [in Queensland] to better my footy, but I really missed my family," Williams, who scored five tries last week, said. "I'm only just getting back to enjoying my footy again, so I'm pretty happy playing with the Kangaroos."
