I went to Seiffert Oval today... turned up at about 2pm. Went to the canteen... who should be there but Terry Campese, serving the customers. Had a bit of a chat to him... he's a great bloke. And volunteering to do that one hour out from his game... what a champion.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Kangaroos bounce back to avoid Blues in thrilling Queanbeyan derby

Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell thought his team was unlucky not to get the win, after his young side bounced back from 16 points down with 23 minutes remaining to snatch an unlikely 28-28 draw.

"[The Blues] did exactly what we thought they were going to do, but we weren't bothered to have a bit of an effort to try and stop it," Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell said. "If we can play for 60 minutes I think we'll be pretty hard to beat."

Queanbeyan Blues 28 (I Latu, J Wheeler, A Woods, I Cotric, Z Patch tries; T Campese 4 goals) drew Queanbeyan Kangaroos 28 (B Cronan 2, J Baxter, E Sinoti, J Simbiken tries; L Cooper 4 goals)

Woden Valley Rams 26 (T Evans, L Eveston, M Geiger, J Morgan, L Withers tries; L Withers 3 goals) defeated Belconnen United Sharks 10 (M Woolnough, M Butz tries; T Aroha-Tuinauvai goals)

West Belconnen Warriors 60 defeated Gungahlin Bulls 18.

Terry's always up for a chat
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 2 Wrap

Image

The Queanbeyan derby produced an extraordinary 28-28 draw between the Blues and Kangaroos at Seiffert Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues looked like they were well in control, leading 28-12 with 20 minutes remaining. But the Kangaroos, led by young half Lachlan Cooper, scored three tries in the space of 10 minutes to level the scoreline - and then neither side could manage the tie breaker in the final stages.

The Queanbeyan Blues the match strongly, racing to a 16-0 lead by the 20th minute, with tries to Isaiah Latu, Jake Wheeler and Aidan Woods. At that stage it looked like "how many?" for the Blues. But the Kangaroos halted the momentum in the 26th minute, with a try to centre Bryan Cronan. Roos five eight Tre Williams put up a high bomb, and two Blues players could not stop the bouncing ball, and Cronan swooped in to collect it and score. The Kangaroos followed up five minutes later when forward Jayden Baxter charged over the line - with the Roos piggybacked up the field by two penalties.

The Blues unleashed their attack once more just prior to the half time break - with winger Ilija Cotric, brother of Raiders' winger Nick Cotric, scoring in the north east corner. It saw the home team go to the break with a 22-12 lead. The Blues continued the point scoring 11 minutes into the second half, when half back Zac Patch made a break, "threw" the dummy half pass of the year, and then streaked away to score under the posts. The conversion from captain-coach Terry Campese gave the Blues a 16 point advantage.

The Kangaroos started their big comeback in the 60th minute, when Lachlan Cooper produced a perfect bomb to the corner for his winger Eli Sinoti to score a four pointer - and Cooper followed up with a booming sideline conversion. The Roos were in again just three minutes later through Jeremiah Simbiken - and while Cooper missed the conversion, the men in maroon suddenly trailed by only six points. Bryan Cronan scored a double for Roos with 11 minutes left on the clock, the conversion leveling the match at 28 apiece.

The Blues lost their way in the 78th minute, failing to take a shot at field goal despite getting into perfect position. It was a tale of missed field goals in the final two minutes, with Lachlan Cooper missing an attempt with two minutes remaining, and Terry Campese missing in the final minute.

"We probably didn't deserve two points [for the win], but in the end we were probably unlucky not to get them," Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell told The Canberra Times after the match.

In other games on Saturday, the Woden Valley Rams were too strong for the Belconnen United Sharks at O'Connor, running out 26-10 winners. Veteran player-coach Lincoln Withers, captain Jeff Morgan and young gun, Lachlan Eveston - a Raiders Under 20s player, returning from injury - all scored tries. The West Belconnen Warriors turned around a Round 1 loss - posting 60 points against the Gungahlin Bulls. They finished with a 60-18 victory - and Bulls coach David Howell will no doubt be concerned about their start to the season.

On Sunday, the Goulburn Bulldogs produced a big 56-12 victory at home over the Yass Magpies - with a hat trick former Raiders Hayden Hodge, and doubles to James Aubusson and Matt Worboys. The win puts the Bulldogs on top of the competition ladder. The Bulldogs were down to one player on the bench, after injuries to Tyler Cornish (suspected broken jaw) and centre Dillon Rota - but still delivered on the scoreboard.

The Canberra Raiders Cup takes a break during the Easter weekend, so Round 3 will be contested in two weeks time.

Injuries sour Goulburn Bulldogs' Canberra Raiders Cup win

One was left with a broken jaw. One taken to hospital with a spinal injury. The ones who were left behind inspired the Goulburn Bulldogs to a 56-12 thrashing of the Yass Magpies.

Goulburn fullback Tyler Cornish has a suspected broken jaw, while centre Dillon Rota was taken to hospital with a spinal injury. Rota has recovered but Cornish is set for a lengthy stint on the sideline in what looms as a devastating blow for the ladder leaders.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 3 Preview

Image

The Canberra Raiders Cup is back this Saturday, following the Easter break - and it is headlined by a top of the table clash between the Goulburn Bulldogs and Woden Valley Rams.

Woden Valley Rams V Goulburn Bulldogs

There are three undefeated teams on the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder - the Bulldogs, Rams and Bushrangers. And the two teams running first and second - on points differential - meet in the match of the round at Phillip.

Goulburn Bulldogs coach Adam Kyle recruited strongly over the off season - with local products Mitch and Tyler Cornish the most notable new arrivals - and the opening rounds suggest that has been paying off. Add the new arrivals to the likes of James Aubusson, Haydon Hodge and third Cornish brother, Nick - and you have a pretty strong line up.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they'll be without fullback Tyler Cornish in this match. He left the field with a suspected broken jaw in Goulburn's big 56-12 win over the Yass Magpies in Round 2 - finishing the worse for wear after finding himself on the wrong end of a shoulder charge.

The most recent Goulburn victory was all the more impressive, because injuries meant the Bulldogs ended up with just one player left on the interchange bench.

"I told them at the end it was one of the proudest performances for me as a coach throughout my coaching career," Kyle said after the game.

"We're really lucky this year, we've recruited really heavily and we've got some good young talent here in Goulburn. We're pretty excited," the coach told The Canberra Times.

The 2018 premiers, the Woden Valley Rams have started the 2019 season as they finished the last. That's despite losing their coach Ash Barnes, who has taken over the Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg team this year. Veteran half, Lincoln Withers, is providing the continuity as the new player coach. In Round 2, the Rams accounted for the Belconnen United Sharks at O'Connor, 26-10, in a five tries to two victory.

Over the opening two rounds, the two teams have posted an identical defensive record (conceding an average 13 points per match), while the Bulldogs have the better attack (scoring a huge 45 points per match, the Rams just under 30).

The Rams won both contests against the Bulldogs in 2018 - by 48-22 at Phillip in Round 8 and 38-14 at Goulburn in Round 17. But this is a different Goulburn team this year. Last year they only produced four wins. It should be a good test for both teams, but we'll stick with the home team in this one.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V West Belconnen Warriors

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos host the West Belconnen Warriors at Freebody Oval in the live stream match. The Kangaroos are yet to win a game so far in 2019 - going down to the Bulldogs, 34-14, in Round 1 and drawing with the Queanbeyan Blues in Round 2 at Seiffert. The Roos made a huge comeback in the final 20 minutes, overcoming a 16 point deficit, to level the match 28-28.

It'll be the first time that the Roos line up against their former talisman, Brent Crisp, since his off season transfer from the west of Queanbeyan to the west of Belconnen. Roos captain Troy Whiley says they won't be focusing too much on Crisp or fellow Warriors half Bobby Roberts.

"We know how good Brent is, and Bobby Roberts, both halves. But at the end of the day, we've just got to worry about ourselves. If we do our job right, they don't come into it," Whiley said.

Whiley hopes the Kangaroos can carry on with the sort of form they showed in the final stages of their draw with the Blues.

"We started slowly in that game. That last 20 minutes was a good fight back. Hopefully, that's how we start [against the Warriors] and that's how we play. That last 20 minutes was unreal. We've just got to do that for the whole 80 minutes."

"Even 60 minutes would be good," Whiley said, laughing.

New Kangaroos recruit - and former Raiders outside back - Reece Robinson is expected to make his first appearance of the year in the match, so there'll be plenty of interest in how he goes in the Canberra Raiders Cup. He carries on some family tradition, with his brother Travis previously playing for the Roos.

In his second incarnation as West Belconnen coach, Adam Peters is happy to be back at the helm - but knows his team faces a big challenge against the Kangaroos on their home turf.

"I've been out of coaching first grade, for seven years. I'd been coaching Under 18s for a couple of years, and then I had a full year off. Both my sons are in the top grade at the moment. It's a good time to go back and pick up the reins where I left off," Peters said.

"I expect them [the Kangaroos] to be very tough. They've been awesome for a number of years. Aaron Gorrell has done a great job there. We're playing them at Freebody Oval and that's the worst ground to play at. There's a cricket pitch in the middle and you just don't want to be tackled there."

The Warriors suffered a 10 point loss to the Bushrangers at Greenway in Round 1 this year, before posting a big 60-18 win over the Bulls at Gungahlin in Round 2.

In the first match between these teams in 2018, the Kangaroos gave the Warriors a 52-22 beating at Freebody. But in the final round of the regular season, the Warriors edged out the Roos 18-16 at Kippax. Bizarrely, the Warriors replicated the result the very next week in Week 1 of the finals at Freebody - knocking the Queanbeyan outfit out of the finals. If anything, the Warriors should be stronger this year. We'll tip a win for the visitors here.

Belconnen United Sharks V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The third placed Bushrangers head to O'Connor for a meeting with the eighth placed Belconnen United Sharks. The Sharks have recruited well, but that is yet to be reflected in results. They are still to post a win, while the 2018 Grand Finalists, the Bushies, have one win from their only match.

The Sharks suffered a heavy, 50-12 loss to the Blues at Seiffert in Round 1 - but were more competitive in their last outing, losing 26-10 to the reigning premiers, the Rams.

When these two teams met in 2018, Tuggeranong was too strong, winning 40-10 in Round 6 at O'Connor. However the Sharks got closer in Round 15 at Greenway, going down 22-16. Hopefully the Sharks continue to build, but beating the Bushrangers on Saturday will be a tall order.

Yass Magpies V Gungahlin Bulls

Both the Magpies and Bulls have yet to record a win this year - and both will be desperate to change that at Walker Park at Yass. David Howell's Bulls were given a thrashing in their first appearance of 2019 in Round 2, while the Magpies were thrashed at Goulburn by the Dogs in their last match.

The Magpies won both games between these clubs in 2018. Yass won 30-16 at Gungahlin in Round 8, and handed out another lesson in Round 17, winning 32-12. We'll tip the home team to get their first victory of 2019.

Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen Warriors Brent Crisp knows he will be targeted facing former team

Brent Crisp knows he has a target on his back this weekend, when he lines up for West Belconnen against his old club, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

"They like to come at you a bit harder, so I'm expecting I'll have a lot of traffic sent my way," Crisp said. "I wouldn't expect anything different. It always is that way when you play your old side."

He will have to play 5/8 there. Souths have Tanah Boyd who has been part of the Qld junior squads and a very promising talent. Broncos contracted.

Shaun Fensom also playing there.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 3 Wrap

Image

The Goulburn Bulldogs showed they are the real deal in 2019, defeating the 2018 premiers, the Woden Valley Rams on their own turf at Phillip, 44-24 in a Round 3 top of the table clash. The win sees Goulburn retain first place on the competition ladder.

The Bulldogs started the match on fire, with centre Chris Hart starting a procession of four Goulburn tries in just the third minute. Hooker James Aubusson burrowed over from dummy half six minutes later, giving the visitors a 10-0 advantage. Tries to Bulldogs winger Steve Cummins and five eighth, and former Raider, Mitch Cornish saw Goulburn take a 20-0 lead by the 25th minute mark. At that stage it looked like the Bulldogs "by how many".

But the Rams then began to work their way back into the contest - and took advantage of one very lucky break with the bounce of the ball in the final 10 minutes of the half. Liam Simonsson and Steven Ferry crossed for Woden in the space of five minutes - and suddenly the Rams were back in the contest. They went to the half time break trailing 20-12.

Four minutes into the second half, the Rams were at it again, with Kosta Posantzis throwing a big dummy and fooling the Bulldogs defence. He stepped through a hole close to the line, for another four points. The conversion from Lincoln Withers reduced the Bulldogs' lead to just two points.

However, Goulburn was able to halt the Rams' momentum. A try to lock Haydon Hodge in the 48th minute gave the Bulldogs some breathing space. Mitch Cornish stepped his way through the Woden defence in the 64th minute, to score his second try of the afternoon. James Aubusson followed up, scoring his second try three minutes later - in what was almost a replica of his first - and the Bulldogs had reasserted complete control, leading 38-18.

In the 71st minute, Woden's Dan Prior got one back for the home team, but Goulburn second rower Jake Whittaker finished it off for the Bulldogs scoring a try with two minutes left on the clock. Chris Hart's conversion delivered the final scoreline, an impressive 44-24 win for the Goulburnites.

At Freebody Oval, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos were aiming for their first win of the season, after an epic draw in Round 2 in the Queanbeyan derby at Seiffert Oval. However, they fell just two points short, going down the West Belconnen Warriors 32-30. Former Kangaroos talisman, Brent Crisp, now with the Warriors, played a critical role in the West Belconnen win. Former Canberra Raiders star Reece Robinson was a late inclusion for the Queanbeyan outfit - and was no doubt hoping for a different result in his debut with the Kangaroos.

The Warriors were quick out of the blocks, scoring the first three tries. Ryley Thomas was the first to cross, before he set up winger Andrew McDonald for a double - giving West Belconnen a 14-0 lead. The home team hit back with tries to Nukurua Ngere and Tre Williams, cutting the West Belconnen to just two points. But a try to Warriors second rower Keresoma Sione before half time, set up by Crisp, saw West Belconnen in front at the break, 20-12.

Half Lachie Ingram stepped into the breach for the Kangaroos, after half Lachlan Cooper was recently poached by the Souths Logan Magpies - and he made his impact felt with two terrific second half tries. Ingram scored his first try just after the break, reducing the Warriors lead to just two points. But Brent Crisp answered in the 50th minute, backing up a break down the eastern touch line - pushing the Warriors' advantage out to eight. Another brilliant Ingram run in the 61st minute produced his double - and again the Kangaroos trailed by just two.

The Warriors hit back almost immediately, capitalising on a Roos error and crossing through Brandon Withers - giving West Belconnen a 32-24 lead. The Kangaroos again drew within two points of the Warriors with 10 minutes remaining, after a converted Sione Afemi try. But neither team could add to their tally in the nerve wracking final stages, with the Warriors running out two point victors.

In other matches, the Yass Magpies had a comprehensive 48-14 win over the Gunghalin Bulls at Walker Park, with David Faaeteete and Phil Sparnon both scoring hat tricks. At O'Connor the Tuggeranong Bushrangers had an unexpectedly narrow 26-24 victory over the Belconnen United Sharks. Former Raider Drury Low scored a double for the Bushies, while the blockbusting Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai scored two for the Sharks.

The win sees the Bushrangers move into second place, while the Rams drop to fifth. The Queanbeyan Blues, with two competition points from the bye, move into third, and the Warriors into fourth.

Ex-Canberra Raider Reece Robinson can't revive Queanbeyan Kangaroos

Not even the return of Reece Robinson to the capital could bounce the Queanbeyan Kangaroos back on track as Aaron Gorrell's side continue to chase their first win of the season.

"It's pretty frustrating, we're thereabouts, but thereabouts isn't going to be good enough for the rest of the year," Gorrell said. "It's the second game in a row that we've given the opposition three tries to start. Against quality teams you can't afford to do it.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 4 Preview

Image

Round 4 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a top of the table clash between the Goulburn Bulldogs and the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Greenway.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Goulburn Bulldogs

There are three undefeated teams on the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder - the Bulldogs, Rams and Blues. And the two teams running first and second - on points differential - meet in the match of the round at Greenway.

Last week, the Bulldogs showed that they are the real deal when they accounted for the 2018 premiers, the Woden Valley Rams, 44-22, at Phillip. It broke an undefeated run of 15 games for the Rams. The Bulldogs were without fullback Tyler Cornish, but with Mitch and Nick Cornish and James Aubusson filling the remaining play making roles, Goulburn proved to be too strong.

The Bulldogs likely have the strongest "spine" in the competition - and once you add in players like Haydon Hodge, the Dogs have a very strong line up. Aubusson and Hodge are now the competition's leading try scorers, with five apiece. The Bulldogs are now three from three, but this week they have been set another test when they meet the other Grand Finalist of 2018.

The Bushrangers have two wins from their two matches, but they had an unexpectedly narrow, 26-24, victory over the Belconnen United Sharks at O'Connor last week. The Sharks did not win a game in 2018, and have yet to taste victory in 2019 - but they pushed the Bushies all the way, with the lead changing hands a number of times. They'll no doubt be hoping to put in a better performance at home on Saturday.

New Bushrangers recruit, Jarrad Kennedy, is hoping his combination with former team mates, Michael Brophy and Drury Low, from the Canberra Raiders 2008 NYC premiership winning team, can help make the difference for Tuggeranong.

"That's probably one of the reasons I went [to Tuggeranong], because there's a few blokes I've played with in the past who I want to reconnect with. We've only played two games [in 2019], but I think there's still a lot we can get out of me and Drury being next to each other. And we've got Brophs there next to us on the weekend," Kennedy said.

"They're leaders down there. They do a lot of work with me in teaching some of the young kids. It makes it a bit easier having them there, blokes I have played with in the past."

The Bulldogs are clearly the best attacking and defensive outfit so far this season. They have scored 45 points on average per game (compared with 29 for the Bushrangers), and conceded just over 16 points per game (23 for the Bushrangers). Last year the Bulldogs finished seventh on the ladder - and the the Bushrangers beat them twice in 2018 (26-16, at Goulburn in Round 3 and 26-12, at Greenway in Round 12). But this is a different Goulburn team this year. Form dictates we tip that the Bulldogs will win four in a row on Saturday.

Unfortunately, this game is directly up against the Raiders on television on Saturday afternoon. But you will be able to keep an eye on both! Thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream right here:

Have the Raiders on Fox League, and this match on your computer screen!

Gungahlin Bulls V Woden Valley Rams

Also on Saturday, the Bulls host the Woden Valley Rams at Gungahlin Enclosed. The Bulls have not won either of their matches in 2019, suffering two big defeats. In Round 2, they conceded 60 points to the West Belconnen Warriors - and then suffered a 48-14 loss to the Yass Magpies in their last outing.

Bulls coach David Howell certainly has a lot on his plate in this one. The Bulls now have the worst attacking (16 points scored per match on average) and defensive record (54 points conceded per game) in the competition so far this season. While the Rams suffered a big loss themselves in Round 3, they did make a comeback - and they will be a very difficult opponent for Gungahlin. The Rams have averaged 28 points per game in 2019, conceding an average of 23.

The Bulls finished eighth on the ladder in 2018, and the Rams beat the Bulls twice last year (34-20, in Round 6 at Phillip and 22-6, in Round 15 at Gungahlin). The Rams should bounce back well in this one. However, the Bulls will be helped by the inclusion of Raiders half Brendan O'Hagan - who is being kept out of Mounties NSW Cup team by Aidan Sezer and Ata Hingano.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Yass Magpies

The final match on Saturday sees the sixth placed Yass Magpies head to Freebody Oval for a clash with the eighth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The Magpies won their first game of the season in Round 3 - and it was a big win over the Bulldogs.

The Kangaroos have yet to win a game. The closest they came was the draw in Round 2 against the Queanbeyan Blues - when they produced a great comeback in the final 20 minutes to snatch one competition point. They lost narrowly last week against the Warriors. Their potential performances are stronger than their position on the competition ladder. Reece Robinson made his debut for the club last weekend, and he'll only get stronger as the season unfolds. Half Lachie Ingram really made an impact in Round 3 as well.

The Kangaroos won both games between the two clubs in 2018. They posted a 28-18 win at Walker Park in Round 5, before handing out a 46-12 thrashing in Round 12 at Freebody. I'm expecting that that the Roos will put it all together this weekend.

West Belconnen Warriors V Queanbeyan Blues

It should be a great contest at Kippax on Sunday, when the third placed Queanbeyan Blues travel north to meet the fourth placed West Belconnen Warriors. The match marks the debut of Joel Monaghan for the Blues, after he signed with the Queanbeyan outfit this week.

The Warriors have two wins from three matches this season, including an epic 32-30 victory over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freebody Oval in their last outing. Former Kangaroos talisman, Brent Crisp, now with the Warriors, played a critical role in the West Belconnen win - as did fellow veteran half, Bobby Roberts. Warriors coach Adam Peters was particularly pleased with the victory.

"I was very, very happy with that result. Previous years we probably would have gone down in a tough game like that down here. It's really hard going here," Peters told The Canberra Times after the match.

"We skipped away to a good lead but we just kept inviting them back. The player they have picked up are really strong, they are always a threat so we're just happy to have those two points."

The Blues are coming off a bye - and are undefeated, with a win and a draw to their name. So far, the Blues have the better defence, conceding 20 points on average per game, compared with 27 for the Warriors. They have a similar attacking record, both posting around 38-39 points per game.

The Warriors defeated the Blues twice in 2018, with West Belconnen making the finals, and the Blues uncharacteristically missing out. In Round 2 last year, the Warriors defeated the Blues 40-0 at Seiffert, and followed that up with a 14-4 win at Kippax in Round 11.

Given the form so far, we'll go with the home team in this one.

The Greenhouse will be at the Warriors V Blues clash on Sunday afternoon. We will bring you live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup and #CRRL19 hashtags.

Fijian prospect inspires Gungahlin Bulls' Canberra Raiders Cup upset

The Gungahlin's Fijian centre Isimeli Vatanitawake helped the Bulls to their first win of the season with a 24-22 triumph over the Woden Valley Rams at Gungahlin Oval on Saturday. Coach David Howell hopes Vatanitawake is just the start.

"As a club we have sponsored [Vatanitawake] to come over from Fiji and give him an opportunity, he is only 19, to play at a decent level of footy, and hopefully he can kick on from here," Howell said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Jake Wheeler and Joel Monaghan inspire Queanbeyan Blues win

Many of those streaming through the gates had turned up to see the Joel Monaghan show. Instead his centre partner Jake Wheeler hijacked the lead role with three tries in eight minutes to set up the Queanbeyan Blues' resounding 42-22 win over the West Belconnen Warriors.

"I've been waiting for Wheels actually, he has been coming back from a big injury last year and hadn't really found his feet as yet, but he definitely turned one on," Blues coach Terry Campese said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 4 Wrap

There is just one undefeated team left in the Canberra Raiders Cup for season 2019, after the Tuggeranong Bushrangers proved too strong for the Goulburn Bulldogs at Greenway on Saturday. The Bushrangers now stand alone at the top of the competition ladder after running out winners over the Dogs, 24-18.

It was a very tight tussle in the first half, with both sides scoring just a single try. The home team started strongly, with Tuggeranong hooker Josh Mitchell diving over the line from dummy half. Though he scored not far from the posts, he was unable to convert his own try. The Bushies' 4-0 advantage lasted most of the first stanza, with both teams "in the grind". However, three minutes from the break, Michael Dodson bulldozed his way through the Tuggeranong defence, scoring under the posts - setting up a 6-0 half time lead for Goulburn.

Tuggeranong scored inside the first minute of the second half, with five eighth Wes Alexander making a great break and putting in a kick ahead for centre Ngarima Low for a four pointer. Then in the 45th minute, Alexander scored his own try, easily running through the Goulburn defensive line. Mitchell's first conversion of the afternoon gave the home team a 14-6 lead.

The Bulldogs struck back quickly, with James Aubusson and Mitch Cornish sending the ball left to Izzy Titor, who scored his first try in his first grade debut. That reduced the gap between the teams to just two points. Just a few minutes later, Mitch Cornish hoisted the ball high, and Tittor was over again - after chasing the kick and somehow finding the ball in his hands with the line open. Chris Hart's conversion gave the Bulldogs an 18-14 lead at the 52nd minute. But that was to be the last of the scoring for the Bulldogs.

A Jarrad Kennedy try in the 60th minute saw the Bushrangers draw level, before Josh Mitchell went over for his second try of the afternoon four minutes later. Mitchell converted his own try and the Bushies took a 24-18 lead - which they held over the final quarter hour of the match.

On Sunday, a big crowd turned out at Kippax to see the return of former Raider Joel Monaghan to the playing fields of Canberra in a clash between the Queanbeyan Blues and West Belconnen Warriors. Monaghan, who played with the Albury Thunder in 2018, signed on last week for the Blues - and he scored the first try of the match in the sixth minute. The Blues had an 18-6 lead with less than 10 minutes to the break. But the home team scored twice in the final five minutes of the half, through veteran halves Brent Crisp and Bobby Roberts - and the two teams went to half time all tied up at 18-18.

The second half belonged to the Blues and centre Jake Wheeler. He scored a sensational hat trick in the space of eight minutes - the best possibly the last, when he brilliantly took a Terry Campese bomb to score in the 58th minute. And when Blues benchie Sateki Fetuani scored in the 65th minute, the Blues' lead had blown out to 42-18. A consolation try to the Warriors late in the match produced the final 42-22 scoreline. In the final seconds of the game, Blues prop Josh Hitchins was sensationally sent off. He was tackled high - and the Blues received the penalty for the initial offence. But Hitchins got his marching orders, it appears for an incident which followed the high tackle.

In other matches, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos produced a huge 54-10 win over the Yass Magpies, while the Gungahlin Bulls pulled off a massive upset against the visiting Woden Valley Rams. They defeated the 2018 premiers, 24-22, at Gungahlin despite losing inspiring second rower Brad Scholes to injury before the match. Raiders half, Brendan O'Hagan was sent back to Gungahlin for the match, unable to find a spot in a Mounties team featuring Aidan Sezer and Ata Hingano. He made a big difference for the Bulls, while Fijian centre Isimeli Vatanitawake impressed in his debut.

The Queanbeyan Blues have moved into second place on the competition ladder after their victory, with the Bulldogs dropping to third. The Warriors round out the top four, with the Rams in fifth, on points differential.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 5 Preview

Image

We have new leaders in the Canberra Raiders Cup, with the Tuggeranong Bushrangers taking over top spot following their victory over the Goulburn Bulldogs at Greenway last Saturday.

The loss saw the Bulldogs drop to third, with the Queanbeyan Blues leap frogging them into second, after the Blues produced a big win over the West Belconnen Warriors at Kippax on Sunday.

In Round 5, the top three teams all have a chance to consolidate, as they meet teams in the bottom half of the ladder.

Queanbeyan Blues V Yass Magpies

The Queanbeyan Blues host the Yass Magpies at Seiffert Oval on Saturday, in a clash between second and ninth on the ladder. Last weekend, the Blues went to Kippax and came back with the two competition points. Former Raider, Joel Monaghan, aged 37, made his debut with the Queanbeyan outfit, and came up with the first try of the match. The scores were level at half time, but the Blues dominated the Warriors in the second half - with centre Jake Wheeler scoring an incredible hat trick in the space of eight minutes.

Wheeler is now one of five players with five tries for the season - and is at the head of the competition's try scoring list, along with Brent Crisp, Haydon Hodge, Bryan Cronan and James Aubusson. He suffered a knee injury last year, playing only four matches of the 2018 season. Blues captain-coach Terry Campese is thrilled to see him back on the field and now back in form.

"I've been waiting for Wheels actually, he has been coming back from a big injury last year and hadn't really found his feet as yet, but he definitely turned one on," Campese told The Canberra Times.

"He is a player I think could easily play higher representative football, but he has just been unlucky with selections and stuff over time. It's good to see him back at his best for us."

The Blues have yet to taste defeat in 2019, posting two wins and a draw so far, while the Magpies have won just once. They produced a big 48-14 win over the Gungahlin Bulls in Round 3. But in their last outing, they suffered a 54-10 thrashing at the hands of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freebody Oval. They might well have preferred to avoid another trip to Queanbeyan quite so soon.

The Blues have clearly the better attacking and defensive record this year. They have scored an average 40 points per match - the best in the league - compared with 22 for the Magpies. In addition, no team has conceded fewer points than the Blues - and on average, only the Bulldogs have conceded fewer points per match (21, compared with under 19 for the Bulldogs and 39 for the Magpies).

Last year, the Blues won a controversial Round 1 match against the Magpies last year, 23-18, at Canberra Stadium, with a number of players sent off. The Magpies won the return clash, 14-10, at Walker Park in Round 10. This year, however, the Blues are the team with the form on the board. Expect a Blues win at home.

If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Gungahlin Bulls

Also on Saturday, the undefeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers host the sixth placed Gungahlin Bulls. The Bulls produced their first win of the season last week, a massive 24-22 upset against the 2018 premiers, the Woden Valley Rams.

The Bushies have the better attack (scoring an average 27 points per match, compared with 19 for the Bulls) and much better defence (conceding an average 21 points per match, compared with 43 for the Bulls). Tuggeranong were the minor premiers in 2018, while the Bulls ran second last. The Bushrangers produced a big 51-10 win over the Bulls in Round 7 last season, but the Bulls pulled off a huge 22-12 upset in Round 16 at Gungahlin. Whether the Bulls can do that again will depend on the final line ups. If Brendan O'Hagan is a again available, that'll boost the Bulls chances. But this is a game that the Bushrangers should win.

Woden Valley Rams V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The fifth placed Woden Valley Rams host the seventh placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos. The Rams have now lost two in a row, following a 15 game undefeated run which started in Round 6 last year. The Rams defeated the Kangaroos 38-16 in the first clash between the teams last year in Round 2. But it was the Kangaroos that came closest to interrupting the Rams' undefeated run last year, with the two teams drawing 22 all in Round 11 at Freebody Oval.

The more important reason for the Rams to be worried is that the Kangaroos now look to be hitting their straps in 2019. The Kangaroos forced a draw with the Blues in Round 2, after making a big comeback - and lost by just two points in Round 3 to the West Belconnen Warriors. However, in their last outing, they put it all together in their big victory over Yass. The Rams have won two and lost two so far this season, while the Roos have one win, a draw and two losses their name. However the run of form suggests the Kangaroos have a very good chance of visiting Phillip and taking away the points.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Belconnen United Sharks

The Belconnen United Sharks make the trek to Goulburn for a meeting with the Bulldogs. The Sharks have yet to win a game, posting a zero and three start to the season. They had the bye last week, but they came very close to upsetting the Bushrangers in their last match, losing by just two points. So they are showing signs of being more competitive in 2019. The Sharks were also competitive against the Bulldogs last year, losing 30-24 in Round 1 at O'Connor and by 20-12 at Goulburn in Round 10.

However, while Goulburn lost last week by six points to the Bushies, they are a much stronger team this year than last. No team has scored more points this season than Goulburn - and their average points scored per match (38) is close to the best. Their attack, led by Nick and Mitch Cornish in the halves, and James Aubusson at hooker, is firing on all cylinders. They also have the best defence in the league (19 points conceded per game). In contrast, the Sharks have averaged 15 points scored per game, while they've conceded an average 34. It'll be a very tough road trip for the Sharks. The Bulldogs should win, well.

The Greenhouse will be in Brisbane this weekend for Magic Round, but we will do our best to bring you results via @CanberraCup on Twitter. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup and #CRRL19 hashtags.
