Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 8 Wrap

The Goulburn Bulldogs produced a dominant display in Round 8 of the Canberra Raiders Cup, defeating the Gungahlin Bulls 56-4 at Gungahlin Enclosed. The Bulldogs piled on 11 tries in the match, the Bulls just one. Mitch Cornish was the mastermind for Goulburn, controlling the play brilliantly, while winger Steven Cummins scored four tries - three consecutively in the first half.

The Bulldogs started fast, with hooker James Aubusson barging his way over the line from dummy half, despite a solid wall of defenders in front of him. Just four minutes later, Mitch Cornish produced his first piece of brilliance, a great left step and a great break delivering another four pointer and a 10-0 lead for the visitors.

The Bulls fought back through a try to second rower Alex Petit in the 17th minute, after he followed a ricocheted kick. But that fight back was short lived. Winger Steven Cummins produced a hat trick of tries between the 21st and 35th minutes - with the left edge of Mitch Cornish, Chris Hart and Cummins on fire. The first two were scored out wide in identical fashion. The third was scored under the posts, after Cummins backed up on the inside, giving Hart an easy shot at the conversion - and producing a 20 point lead.

Just before half time, Mitch Cornish was at it again after the Bulldogs conventional backline move in the red zone didn't deliver. On the next play, Cornish tried the unconventional, with the five eighth stepping his way along the sideline, reaching out to score in the corner himself. The Bulldogs went to the break with an imposing 28-4 lead - but it could have been greater had Chris Hart not missed four conversion attempts.

The Bulls came out fired up after the break - and held the Bulldogs scoreless for almost 20 minutes. Gungahlin nearly scored themselves, after the Dogs could not handle a Jake Scholes kick to the in goal - and Scholes appeared to ground the loose ball. However, it was ruled that he had knocked on... and, unfortunately for Gungahlin, that was the end of the fight.

In the 58th minute, the Bulldogs extended their lead, with Mitch Cornish making a half break with more great stepping, then throwing a gem of a pass for his brother, Nick, who scored right beside the posts. Eight minutes later, it was the turn of the Bulldogs' right edge, when centre Dillon Rota produced a great run, setting up winger Pat Cooke for a try in the corner. With around 10 minutes remaining, Goulburn prop Tyson Greenwood went over the line from close range, and the Hart conversion from in front gave the Bulldogs a 40 point lead.

The Bulldogs posted 50 points when winger Steven Cummins went over in the corner for his fourth try - shortly after a Bulls player was binned for a professional foul - and Hart got the goal from the sideline. They iced the cake in the shadows of full time, with Mitch Cornish putting second rower Isiah Tittor over for an easy try.

In other matches, the Queanbeyan Blues and Tuggeranong Bushrangers fought out a 34 all draw at Seiffert Oval - while at O'Connor the Queanbeyan Kangaroos won by a point, 22-21, over the Belconnen United Sharks, after the Sharks led 20-0 at half time. At Phillip, the Woden Valley Rams edged out the West Belconnen Warriors 12-8.

The Bushrangers remain on top of the competition ladder, but the second placed Bulldogs and third placed Rams are now just one competition point adrift. The Blues hold onto fourth place.

Cornish brothers orchestrate Goulburn Bulldogs win over Gungahlin Bulls

The Cornish brothers, Mitch and Nick, played a huge role in the Bulldogs 56-4 victory over Gungahlin Bulls scoring three tries between them and playing a part in just about every other try scored by the side.

"I'm a very lucky coach to have some of the player I have in my side," coach Adam Kyle said. "Players like Nicholas and Mitchell are outstanding players, but it's what they do off the ball rather than what they do with it is what I notice. Just controlling the play around the middle."

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 9 Preview

Image

Round 9 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by two big clashes - with the ladder leading Bushrangers pitted against the Kangaroos, and the Blues facing the Rams in a battle between third and fourth on the ladder. All teams should be fresh after the general bye during the Queen's Birthday long weekend.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

In the first match of the round, the ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers host the Queanbeyan Kangaroos on Saturday at Greenway.

The Bushrangers had their hands full at Seiffert Oval in Round 8 against the Queanbeyan Blues. The Blues went to an 18-0 lead inside the first 10 minutes. At one stage in the second half, they took a 34-8 lead over the Bushies, with winger Ilija Cotric having scored a hat trick. However, Bushrangers got some momentum in the final 20 minutes and staged a huge come back. They trailed by just two points, until just before full time, when Blues captain-coach Terry Campese was penalised in front of the sticks for failing to take a line drop out quickly enough. Wezley Alexander kicked the ensuing penalty goal, to secure a 34 all draw.

The Kangaroos moved into fifth place on the competition after an incredible 22-21 win over the Belconnen United Sharks at O'Connor in Round 8. The Sharks started strongly, with former Raiders forward Sam Mataora bagging a double. They led 18-0 after 25 minutes and went to the half time break with a 20-0 advantage. However, the Kangaroos fought back in the second half, piling on four tries, levelling the match 20-20 with seven minutes remaining. A Matthew Morris field goal inside the final five minutes gave the Sharks a 21-20 lead. But the Roos made one final raid from deep in their own half - and the play ended with a penalty right in front, with the Sharks holding a player back. Lachie Ingram kicked the winning penalty goal right on full time.

The Kangaroos have the better attacking record so far this season - with the Kangaroos ranking third in the competition in attack, the Bushrangers fifth. But the Bushrangers are not leading the competition because of their attack. It is because of their defence. Until they conceded 34 points in their last outing, they were the competition's defensive benchmark - but that title is now held by the Woden Valley Rams. The Bushies are not far behind, however, conceding just four more points than Woden. The Kangaroos' defensive record is not too shabby either. They've conceded just two more points on average per match than the Bushrangers.

The Bushrangers have been the form team all season - but their only loss and draw have come in their past three games. The Kangaroos form line has been on an upward trend. They have lost two games in their past five matches, but both losses, to the Rams and the Warriors, were by a margin of only two points. It should be a very good contest, but we'll go with the ladder leaders at home.

Season record: Bushrangers 5 and 1, 1 draw (1st, +42)
Kangaroos 3 and 3, 1 draw (5th, +63)

Form: Bushrangers WWLWD
Kangaroos LWLWW

Attacking record: Bushrangers 27, Kangaroos 32 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bushrangers 21, Kangaroos 23 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:
2018 Rd 8: Bushrangers 46 defeated Kangaroos 22 at Greenway
2018 Rd 17: Kangaroos 44 defeated Bushrangers 6 at Freebody Oval

Gungahlin Bulls V Belconnen United Sharks

The eighth placed Gungahlin Bulls host the seventh placed Belconnen United Sharks at Gungahlin Enclosed. Both of these teams have been "giant killers" this season, producing some big upsets against more fancied rivals.

Until Round 6, the Sharks had not won a match since 2017. But they had a breakthrough win over this year's cellar dwellers, the Yass Magpies. They followed that up with a second win in a row, a huge upset over the then fourth placed West Belconnen Warriors, 26-12 in a gripping contest. In Round 8, they led the Kangaroos for most of the match, and only suffered a one point loss at the death. It is great to see the Sharks playing some good football after such a long period in the doldrums.

The Bulls have also produced a couple of big recent upsets against the Woden Valley Rams and the Queanbeyan Blues, coincidentally winning by an identical, 24-22, scoreline. The Bulls' victories have come in the two games when young Canberra Raiders half Brendan O'Hagan was available - but they have not performed as well without him. In their last two matches they have been comprehensively defeated. They lost first to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 52-10 at Freebody. And in their last outing, the Goulburn Bulldogs piled on 11 tries, with the Bulls scoring just one. Mitch Cornish was the mastermind of the 56-4 win for Goulburn, while Bulldogs winger Steven Cummins scored four tries - three consecutively in the first half.

This should be a hard fought game, but the most recent form of the two teams points to a victory on the road for the Sharks. If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Season record: Bulls 2 and 5 (8th, -186)
Sharks 2 and 5 (7th, -71)

Form: Bulls WLWLL
Sharks LLWWL

Attacking record: Bulls 14, Sharks 19 points scored per match
Defensive record: Bulls 41, Sharks 29 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:
2018 Rd 5: Bulls 26 defeated Sharks 16 at Gungahlin
2018 Rd 14: Bulls 54 defeated Sharks 18 at O'Connor

Queanbeyan Blues V Woden Valley Rams

The Queanbeyan Blues host the Woden Valley Rams at Seiffert Oval - in a battle between third and fourth on the ladder. The Blues have produced some patchy form in their most recent matches, losing to the Bulls and the Bulldogs, prior to a 34-34 draw against the Bushrangers. It was a match they had in their keeping, but conceded 26 points in the final 20 minutes. The Rams are on a three game winning streak, accounting for the Kangaroos and delivering the Bushrangers only defeat of the season - before 12-8 victory over the West Belconnen Warriors in Round 8.

The Rams now have the best defence in the competition, but only rank sixth in attack. The Blues are producing a lot of points, and their attacking record is second only to the Goulburn Bulldogs. But it is the Rams that are winning in the tight contests. Given the recent form line, we'll tip the Rams to win on the Blues' home turf.

Season record: Blues 3 and 3, 2 draws (4th, +92)
Rams 5 and 2 (3rd, +25)

Form: Blues WWLLD
Rams LLWWW

Attacking record: Blues 37, Rams 24 points scored per match
Defensive record: Blues 24, Rams 20 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:
2018 Rd 5: Blues 22 defeated Rams 18 at Seiffert Oval
2018 Rd 14: Rams 46 defeated Blues 16 at Phillip

West Belconnen Warriors V Yass Magpies

Finally, the sixth placed West Belconnen Warriors travel to Walker Park, Yass for a meeting with the last placed Magpies. The Warriors were placed in the top four after Round 6, but losses to the Sharks and the Rams in the past two rounds see them two competition points adrift of the fourth placed Blues. The Magpies are on a four game losing streak and have won just one match all season - a 48-14 victory over the Gungahlin Bulls. The Warriors will be desperate to stay in touch with the top four - and should be too strong for Yass in this one.

Season record: Magpies 1 and 6 (9th, -143)
Warriors 3 and 4 (6th, +12)

Form: Magpies WLLLL
Warriors WLWLL

Attacking record: Magpies 17, Warriors 28 points scored per match
Defensive record: Magpies 38, Warriors 26 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:
2018 Rd 7: Magpies 18 defeated Warriors 16 at Kippax
2018 Rd 16: Magpies 16 defeated Warriors 12 at Walker Park

Canberra Raiders Cup: Gungahlin Bulls use Old Boys day to raise money for Menslink

It is a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Gungahlin Bulls first Canberra Raiders Cup premiership. But also a celebration of the lives of old boys Paul de Dassel and Michael Thompson. They'll wear a replica jersey from their 1999 triumph then they play Belconnen United at Gungahlin on Saturday and then auction them off with proceeds going to Menslink to help young men.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 9 Wrap

Image

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers maintained their place at the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder after a victory over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Greenway, while the Queanbeyan Blues moved into third after overcoming the Woden Valley Rams at Seiffert Oval.

The opening stages at Greenway probably belonged to the Kangaroos. But it took until the 15th minute before the first points were put on the board, with Kangaroos hooker James Ulrick crossing the line - after a good individual run from dummy half. The conversion from half Lachie Ingram gave the visitors a 6-0 lead.

The Bushrangers struck back in the 25th minute, with hooker Josh Mitchell sending the ball wide to winger Jayden Pollard. He looked certain to go out over the the touch line in the corner. But without looking, he flung the ball back inside, and five eighth Wez Alexander was on the spot to regather and score the try, unchallenged. Alexander was unable to convert from the sideline.

Just five minutes later, the Kangaroos extended their lead when second rower Nukurua Ngere charged over the white stripe out wide - giving the visitors a 10-4 advantage. But a few minutes later, Ngere found himself in the bad books, after he was ruled to have kicked at the ball in a Bushrangers ruck in the red zone - and was sent to the sin bin. The Bushies took advantage almost immediately, with Ngarima Low getting a four pointer. That reduced the Roos lead to two points... but another Low, Drury, gave the home team the lead with a try right on half time. The Bushrangers went to the break with a 12-10 lead.

Just two minutes into the second half, the Bushies were at it again, spreading the ball wide to winger Jayden Pollard, who scored in the corner. Tuggeranong failed to convert for a fourth time in the match - but by the time Ngere had returned to the field, the Bushrangers had a 16-10 lead. In the 54th minute, Ngere partially made up for his sin binning, with his second try of the afternoon - backing up after a break from fellow second rower Josh Ayres. The conversion from Lachie Ingram from in front of the posts levelled the match, 16-16.

But that was the end of the scoring for the Kangaroos. In the 59th minute, Wez Alexander sent Tristan Eldridge to the try line. Then two tries for the Bushrangers in the space of four minutes put the result beyond doubt. In the 68th minute, winger Connor Massen crossed in the corner, while Eldridge bagged his double shortly afterwards. The Bushrangers scored seven tries in all - the Kangaroos three - but, with Josh Mitchell not kicking, failed in all seven conversion attempts.

In other matches, the Queanbeyan Blues got themselves back on the winners list with a 24-16 win over the defending premiers, the Woden Valley Rams. This was a battle between third and fourth on the ladder, and the result saw the the Blues jump over the Rams into third place. Jake Wheeler scored a double for the Blues in the six tries to three victory.

At Kippax, the Yass Magpies were the first to score, but the new look West Belconnen Warriors took a 14-6 lead to the break - and in the end the Warriors ran out comfortable 30-12 winners. At Gungahlin, the Belconnen United Sharks produced a big first 40 minutes, and led 32-6 at half time. While the Bulls put in a stronger performance in the second half, the result was never really in doubt, with the visitors winning 44-28.

Big Dan is Kilian it for the Tuggeranong Bushrangers

Bushrangers coach Jarrad Teka credited Dan Kilian with turning the momentum in their 28-16 win over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Greenway on Saturday - in just his second game.

"[Kilian] was the one that was the turning point, when he came on today he got us back in the game. Just a bigger body taking a bit of gas out of their tank to tackle him," Teka said.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 10 Preview

Image

Round 10 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by Saturday's match up between the Goulburn Bulldogs and Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freebody - and Sunday's clash between the ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers and the fifth placed West Belconnen Warriors at Kippax.

Belconnen United Sharks V Queanbeyan Blues

The Belconnen United Sharks have now won three of their past four matches - their only loss a one point defeat at the hands of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in Round 8. That's a big achievement for a team that did not win a match for almost two years.

The Sharks have done it without one of their biggest signings for 2019, former Canberra Raiders hooker, Glen Buttriss, who has not played since Round 1 due to injury. But their hard working forward pack, led by the likes of Sonny Tupuola, Ranapiri Baker, Channon McAskill and former Raider Sam Mataora, have been laying the platform - for outside backs like Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai and Joseph Vejvoda.

Both Aroha-Tuinauvai - another of the Sharks' big signings for 2019 - and Vejvoda have four tries to their name during the first half of the season. But remarkably it is prop forward Tupuola who is the leading try scorer for the Sharks this year, with five.

Glen Buttriss sees the win over the Yass Magpies, the first since 2017, as the turning point.

“The win over Yass was unreal,” Buttriss told Region Media. “Everyone was just buzzing, not only for the players but their families and friends, the committee, it was a great feeling for the club.

“That’s what the club needed, just that one win and we knew if we could just get that one win, then we would get that belief and confidence within the side.”

Last weekend, the Sharks piled on eight tries in their 44-28 victory over the Gungahlin Bulls at Gungahlin Enclosed. While the Bulls came back into the game in the second half, the result was never really in doubt, after the Sharks led 32-6 at half time. They'll fancy their chances on Saturday when they host the third placed Queanbeyan Blues at O'Connor on Saturday.

The Blues jumped over the Woden Valley Rams last weekend, when they defeated the 2018 premiers 24-16 at Seiffert Oval. But the Blues have produced some patchy form at times this year, and have recorded two losses and a draw in their past five matches. While the Sharks suffered a big loss to the Blues in the earlier encounter between the clubs in Round 1, the Sharks now appear to be a different team, and are playing with a lot more confidence. The Blues rank second in the competition in attack and fourth in defence - while the Sharks have conceded seven points more than they have scored on average per match. The Sharks could be missing Sam Mataora, who has been plucked out of Canberra Raiders Cup for the Cook Islands' World Cup quaifier against South Africa at Ringrose Park on Friday night. However, has been named to back up. The Blues are without the playing services of captain coach Terry Campese. So don't write off the Sharks' chances of yet another "upset" in this match.

Season record: Sharks 3 and 5 (7th, -55)
Blues 4 and 2, 2 draws (3rd, +100)

Form: Sharks LWWLW
Blues WLLDW

Attacking record: Sharks 22, Blues 36 points scored per match
Defensive record: Sharks 29, Blues 23 points conceded per match

Most recent meetings:

2019 Rd 1: Queanbeyan Blues 50 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 12 at Seiffert Oval

2018 Rd 12: Queanbeyan Blues 22 drew Belconnen United Sharks 22 at Seiffert Oval
2018 Rd 3: Queanbeyan Blues 56 defeated Belconnen United Sharks 6 at O'Connor

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Goulburn Bulldogs

Things have not exactly been going the way of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos this season, having posted just three wins and a draw. Their form has probably been better than their position on the table indicates, with two losses by just two points. Last weekend, the Roos were right in the contest in the first half of their clash with the No. 1 team, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers. But a sin binning for Kangaroos forward Nukurua Ngere just before half time proved a turning point, with Tuggeranong scoring three tries while he was off the field. The Bushies then went on with the job in the second half.

The Goulburn Bulldogs might be running second, one competition point adrift of the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, but they rank first in the league in attack and defence - scoring 20 more points on average than they concede. They have suffered just two losses - to the Bushrangers (24-18) and the Warriors (38-22) - and are now aiming for a third straight win. They should be fresh after a two week break.

The recruitment of Mitch Cornish from the Sydney Roosters, to partner younger brother Nick in the halves, has been a key factor in the Bulldogs resurgence this season. Goulburn also recruited Tyler Cornish from Mounties - but the third Cornish brother has only played two matches after suffering a broken jaw.

Mitch is relishing being back in his home town Goulburn, playing with his brothers, and raising his own young family. He and his partner are celebrating the recent arrival of a new baby son.

"I'm loving being back. It's a good vibe at the club this year and getting to play with my brothers has been really good," Cornish said.

"I'm enjoying being back home around the family and now my little family is settling in nicely."

Cornish is also pleased with how things are travelling on the football field - and how the Goulburn club is developing.

"We've got a really good culture there now. We've got a good senior group there and Adam Kyle, the coach... we're really buying into what he's saying. We still see there's a lot of improvement left in the side. so that's a positive."

But he knows it'll be a difficult assignment for the Bulldogs when they travel to Queanbeyan to meet the Roos.

"The Roos at home, it doesn't come any tougher. I think they've been a bit unlucky this year, with just a few close losses. They've definitely got the side to hurt the good sides in this competition. We won't be taking them lightly at all."

This should be one of the best clashes of the round. The Kangaroos will be without former Raiders back Reece Robinson, who has been drafted into the Lebanon squad for their clash with Fiji on Friday. Regardless, the Roos are always difficult to beat at Freebody Oval. However, if there is a team that can do it, it's the Bulldogs. If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Yass Magpies V Woden Valley Rams

The Yass Magpies are running last on the ladder, with just one win to their name in the first half of the season. Only the Bulls have a worse defensive and attacking record, and they are now on a five game losing streak. In their last outing, they lost 30-12, a five tries to two defeat, at Kippax. The Rams dropped to fourth place on the ladder after last week's defeat at the hands of the Blues. The Rams are not quite the team they were in 2018, following losses in the playing ranks. They have recently lost 2019 fullback recruit Harry Van Dartel to boot, with his move to Newcastle. But the Rams should be clearly too good for the Magpies in this one.

Season record: Magpies 1 and 7 (9th, -161)
Rams 5 and 3 (4th, +12)

West Belconnen Warriors V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

West Belconnen Warriors coach Adam Peters went searching for his ideal line up last week, shifting fullback Ryan McQueen into the halves, to partner Bobby Roberts - and moving youngster John Veloudos to fullback and veteran Brent Crisp to centre. That experiment looks to be over with McQueen returning to fullback and Crisp to five eighth for this match.

The Warriors outclassed the Magpies last week. However, the Bushrangers are a much more formidable opponent. In their last match, the Bushies scored seven tries in their 28-16 defeat of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos - a game in which did not score a single goal.

The Warriors have a slightly better attacking record than the Bushrangers - but Tuggeranong has the advantage in defence. The Bushies' defensive record is second only to the Bulldogs, and they have conceded just two more points than Goulburn all season. This should be one of the best matches of the round. The Warriors have the home ground advantage, but it is difficult to tip anything other than a win for the visitors in this one.

Season record: Warriors 4 and 4 (5th, +40)
Bushrangers 6 and 1, 1 draw (1st, +54)

Form: Warriors LWLLW
Bushrangers WLWDW

Attacking record: Warriors 28, Bushrangers 27 points scored per match

Canberra Raiders Cup: Goulburn Bulldogs' Mitch Cornish happy having flown the coop

Mitch Cornish left the Sydney Roosters at the end of last year to return to Goulburn... and he has no regrets.

"The club's been doing some really good things, we've recruited pretty well over the off-season and the players that were there last year are starting to play some really good footy," Cornish said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Blues Wheelering along in Terry Campese's absence

If former Canberra Raiders captain Terry Campese had his way, he wouldn't have Jake Wheeler in his Queanbeyan Blues side. Campese thinks he's that good, he should be playing NRL.

"Jake Wheeler, who I think could play NRL. I think he's that quality of player, that's how highly I think of him, he's skippering the side and doing a great job," Campese said after the Blues won 34-10, playing with just 12 men for much of the second half.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 10 Wrap

Image

The ladder leading Tuggeranong Bushrangers suffered a sensational 46-10 defeat at the hands of the West Belconnen Warriors on Sunday afternoon at a very cold, overcast and windy Kippax.

The Bushies, however, have maintained their hold on first place, after the Queanbeyan Kangaroos held on for a narrow four point victory over the second placed Goulburn Bulldogs at Freebody on Saturday.

In Sunday's only match, the Bushrangers scored the opening two tries to take a 10 point lead - but the Warriors went on to score eight unanswered tries to sweep Tuggeranong aside.

Tuggeranong bench forward Dan Kilian was sent from the field in the 66th minute, after the punches flew, but at that stage the game was well in the Warriors' keeping - with the home team holding a 26 point lead. The Bushrangers also lost five eighth Wez Alexander 10 minutes into the second half. He was knocked out cold, while defending, after what appeared to be a collision with one of his own team mates.

The match was something of an arm wrestle in the opening 10 minutes. Tuggeranong forward Jarrad Kennedy was the first to score - when he somehow grounded the ball in the 13th minute, despite a number of West Belconnen players doing their best to hold him up over the line. Just four minutes later, Tuggeranong winger Jayden Pollard took an intercept and ran 80 metres, to score a sensational four pointer under the posts. But that was as good as it got for the Bushrangers. Josh Mitchell's conversion of the Pollard try was the end of the scoring for the visitors.

In the 20th minute, the Warriors scored what was almost a carbon copy of Jayden Pollard's try - with winger Andrew McDonald intercepting and running 80 metres for West Belconnen's first. That was followed up by a further try eight minutes later, when interchange player Mitchell Shaw followed a kick ahead. Andrew McDonald bagged a double in the 31st minute, after the Warriors got a favourable bounce from a ricocheted kick. Brent Crisp, who returned to his usual five eighth role, stepped his way to the try line with two minutes to the break - his conversion giving West Belconnen a 24-10 lead at half time.

It took until the 55th minute for the Warriors to add to their tally. But they then really turned on some great attacking football. An exciting back line sweep down the Warriors left side put centre Brandon Withers over out wide. They followed up five minutes later, with great passing on the right edge producing a try for replacement John Veloudos.

Crisp was in everything all match - and he was at it again inside the final 10 minutes. He made a huge break in the 73rd minute - but the veteran was never going to have the pace to make it to the try line. It didn't matter, with the ball swept to the opposite side of the field - for a try to winger Beau McFarlane. Crisp put the icing on the cake with four minutes remaining - backing up a Ryan McQueen run and offload - to score his second try of the afternoon. Crisp's conversion delivered the final 46-10 scoreline.

In the match of the day on Saturday, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos were first to score in the 12th minute, when big forward Josh Ayers bullocked his way to the try line. But the Goulburn Bulldogs fought back, led by the Cornish brothers in the halves. In the 30th minute, Mitch Cornish delivered a great pass to send Isiah Tittor in for Goulburn's first try. The Bulldogs followed up with three minutes left in the first half. Nick Cornish set a play in motion which ended in a great run from Dillon Rota, who scored out wide.

The visitors took a 10-6 lead to the break. But the Kangaroos struck back three minutes into the second half, with Josh Ayers, again the human bulldozer, grabbing his second try of the afternoon. Lachie Ingram's conversion saw the Roos take back a narrow 12-10 lead. However the match swung again just four minutes later when Steve Cummins crossed out wide for Goulburn, a try set up by a terrific kick from Mitch Cornish. Chris Hart failed to convert - but the Bulldogs held a two point advantage.

Goulburn held onto that narrow lead for 20 minutes, before Roos forward Troy Whiley again put the home team in front. Both teams had scored three tries - but a perfect kicking record for Lachie Ingram saw the Roos lead 18-14. The Kangaroos were reduced to 12 men when Jonah Latu was sent off with 10 minutes remaining. However they held on desperately until the final siren.

In other matches, the Queanbeyan Blues - again missing captain-coach Terry Campese from his playing role - proved to be too good for the Belconnen United Sharks, winning 34-10 at O'Connor. The Blues managed that feat, despite playing with only 12 men for much of the second half - after replacement hooker Sateki Fetuani was sent off for striking. The Blues also lost hooker Charlie Woolford to a knee injury during the match. At Walker Park, the Woden Valley Rams accounted for the Yass Magpies 24-14.

The Blues and Rams have joined the Bulldogs on 14 competition points, but Goulburn has held onto second place on points differential, with the Blues in third and the Rams in fourth. The wins for the Warriors and Kangaroos keep them in striking distance of the top four.

Crisp West Belconnen Warriors too good for wounded Tuggeranong Bushrangers

If a Brent Crisp masterclass wasn't bad enough, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers were left licking wounds to key players that could take weeks to heal. Josh Mitchell had a suspected broken eye socket, fullback Robert Sheffield went off with a cracked sternum, Jayden Thomas a possible torn pectoral and five-eighth Wezley Alexander was knocked out.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 11 Preview

Image

Round 11 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by Sunday's top of the table clash between the Goulburn Bulldogs and Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

A battle between the top two teams. Both were last start losers, but both will be desperate to win this one. The second placed Bulldogs host the ladder leading Bushrangers - and the home team has the opportunity jump into first place.

The Bulldogs suffered a narrow 18-14 loss to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freebody last weekend. Ultimately, the difference between the teams was the goal kicking of Roos half Lachie Ingram, with both teams scoring three tries. The Bulldogs held a two point lead for a good part of the second half, but the Kangaroos hit the front with 12 minutes remaining through a try to forward Troy Whiley. The home team desperately held onto their four point lead in the final stages, despite being reduced to 12 men when Jonah Latu was sent off with 10 minutes remaining.

The Bushrangers were defeated by a surprisingly large margin by the West Belconnen Warriors - 46-10 - at a very cold, overcast and windy Kippax on Sunday. The Bushies scored the opening two tries to take a 10 point lead - but the Warriors went on to score eight unanswered tries to sweep Tuggeranong aside.

Tuggeranong bench forward Dan Kilian was sent from the field in the 66th minute, after the punches flew. But at that stage the game was well in the Warriors' keeping, with the home team holding a 26 point lead. The Bushrangers also lost five eighth Wez Alexander 10 minutes into the second half. He was knocked out cold, while defending, after what appeared to be a collision with one of his own team mates. He wasn't the only Tuggeranong player in the wars. Hooker Josh Mitchell suffered a suspected broken eye socket, fullback Robert Sheffield departed the field with a cracked sternum and Jayden Thomas suffered a possible torn pectoral.

Bushrangers coach Jarrad Teka believes the loss to the Warriors may not have been a bad thing, shaking some complacency out of the Tuggeranong camp. But he is worried he’ll have some important holes to fill in his team for their clash with the Bulldogs.

"That's been teetering for a while - taking shortcuts at training. I think it was about time someone put us to the sword like that. As long as we respond to it," Teka told The Canberra Times after last weekend's match.

The Bulldogs now have both the best attack and defence in the competition, and are just one competition point adrift of the Bushrangers. Tuggeranong has been winning on the back of their defence - and mostly by close margins. They lost their mantle as the best defensive outfit in the competition after Sunday's result. They don't score a lot of points, and rank fifth in attack - but they have been winning regardless.

We will need to wait and see which players are named on Friday, but the injury situation may well tip the balance further in Goulburn's favour. Add in the home ground advantage for the Bulldogs and this is probably Goulburn's best chance of toppling the No. 1 team.

Season record: Bulldogs 6 and 3 (2nd, +162)
Bushrangers 6 and 2, 1 draw (1st, +18)

Form: Bulldogs WLWWL

Defensive record: Bulldogs 20, Bushrangers 23 points conceded per match

Queanbeyan Blues V West Belconnen Warriors

On Saturday, the third placed Queanbeyan Blues host the fifth placed West Belconnen Warriors. Both teams were last start winners - though the form of both has been a little patchy.

The Blues have been missing captain-coach Terry Campese from the field in the past two weeks - but others have been stepping up. Last week they proved to be too good for the Belconnen United Sharks, winning 34-10 at O'Connor. The Blues managed that feat, despite playing with only 12 men for much of the second half - after replacement hooker Sateki Fetuani was sent off for striking.

Campese has been missing from the team, as other commitments have prevented him from attending a judiciary hearing - after he was sent off for dissent in the final minute of the Blues' draw with the Bushrangers. That match ended amidst controversy after the Blues, leading by two points, were penalised for failing to take a line drop out quickly enough. Campese got his marching orders to boot and it allowed the Bushrangers to salvage a draw.

Campese was full of praise for acting captain Jake Wheeler, and halves Zac Patch and Jordan Williams, after the win over the Sharks.

"The leaders are standing up. It's probably good that I'm not out there talking as much as I normally do because everyone else has to pick that up and they're doing a great job," Campese told The Canberra Times.

The Warriors have been struggling to find the right combinations this season, but they really put it together against the Bushrangers on Sunday. West Belconnen's veteran, Brent Crisp was back at five eighth and was in everything - while Ryan McQueen also produced a strong performance at fullback.

West Belconnen half Bobby Roberts was understandably happy with his team's performance against Tuggeranong.

"We just stuck to out game plan, that was the most pleasing thing," Roberts said of the win over the Bushies.

"The weeks before, we've gone away from the game plan and then fallen apart. But we stuck with it and it all came up trumps in the end."

But Roberts knows the Blues will be tough opponents after the Queanbeyan outfit produced a big win over the Warriors at Kippax earlier this year.

"There are games that we've played and lost, we've put it down to ourselves. We haven't really turned up or there were things that we could have fixed. But with the Blues, they just out-played us. This is a big test for us on the weekend," Roberts said.

This should be a great contest and, given the recent form lines, it’s almost a flip of a coin as to which team wins. But Blues have shown more consistency so far this season - and have the better attacking and defensive record. We'll go with the Blues to take this one at home. If you can't get to the ground, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Season record: Blues 5 and 2, 2 draws (+3rd, +124)

Woden Valley Rams V Gungahlin Bulls

Also on Saturday, the fourth placed Woden Valley Rams host the eighth placed Gungahlin Bulls. The Rams were upset by the Bulls in Round 4 at Gungahlin - but the Bulls' only two wins this year have come when Raiders half Brendan O'Hagan has been available to steer the team around. The Bulls are second last on the ladder, but are the team with the worst defensive record - and rank equal last in attack alongside the Yass Magpies.

The Rams' form has been a little inconsistent, but have only lost to the Blues in their past five games. They won in their last outing against the Yass Magpies, 24-14, in a match that was probably closer than most expected. However Woden should be too strong for Gungahlin at Phillip on Saturday.

Season record: Rams 6 and 3 (4th, +27)

Yass Magpies V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The Yass Magpies have been struggling in 2019 and have only one win to their name. They are now on a six game losing streak, after falling to Woden in their last appearance. On average, they have conceded almost 20 points more than have scored. The Kangaroos had a good win over the Bulldogs last week and their recent form has been on an upward trend. While the Magpies have the home ground advantage in this contest, the Roos should win and win well.
