Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 18 Wrap

The Queanbeyan Blues secured the Canberra Raiders Cup minor premiership in the final round of the regular season, with a 22-16 win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Greenway on Saturday.

The Bushrangers had led the competition since Round 4, but gave the Blues the opportunity to take the minor premiership when they lost to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in Round 17. After dropping just two games all season, Tuggeranong lost both of their final two fixtures. The Blues had held the number one place on the ladder for just one round - Round 1 - purely on points differential.

The Blues were first to score when second rower Josh Stuckey crossed in the 9th minute, the result of a good pass from hooker Zac Patch and some good hard running. Patch was again in the thick of the action in the 22nd minute, when he set up his player-coach Terry Campese for the Blues' second try. The Bushrangers had made too many errors in the opening 20 minutes, but clawed their way back into the contest with a try to second rower Jacob McGrath in the 33rd minute. The teams went to the break with the Blues leading 12-6.

Six minutes into the second half, the Blues extended their lead, through a try in the corner to Jack Williams - capitalising on a great kick return from fullback Matt Parsons. They went further ahead in the 51st minute, when a loose ball from Bushrangers centre Nathan Smith was gathered by Blues winger George Stewart. He ran over 60 metres down the grandstand touch line to score.

The Blues had a commanding 22-6 lead, but the Bushrangers fought back. Jacob McGrath got his second try of the afternoon in the 59th minute. Then with 12 minutes remaining, an evasive Tristan Eldridge ran across field to set up a try to winger Connor Massen in the corner - with former Raider Jarrad Kennedy delivering the final pass. Trailing 22-16, the Bushies were right back in the match - and it was only an intercept from Terry Campese in the final minutes which foiled a Tuggeranong attacking raid and sealed the minor premiership for the Blues.

In other matches on Saturday, the West Belconnen Warriors defeated the Woden Valley Rams, 38-6, in a contest that had no impact on the top four. At Freebody Oval, the fourth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos accounted for the Belconnen United Sharks, with Kaine Pagura scoring a hat trick. It temporarily saw the Roos jump into third place.

However, on Sunday, the Goulburn Bulldogs produced a football lesson for the Gungahlin Bulls, running out 80-0 winners. The Bulldogs scored 15 tries, with five eighth Mitch Cornish and winger Steve Cummins both scoring four tries apiece. The home team led 36-0 at the break, but didn't take the foot off the accelerator in the second half. The victory ensured the Bulldogs finished in third and will host the minor semi final against the Kangaroos in Week 1 of the finals.

Steven Cummins scores four as Goulburn Bulldogs thrash Gungahlin Bulls by 80 in Canberra Raiders Cup

The Goulburn Bulldogs ran in a staggering 15 tries in an 80-0 thrashing of the Gungahlin Bulls at Goulburn Arena on Sunday, with Steven Cummins finishing the top try scorer of the league.

"It's a wonderful achievement for a young fellow from Crookwell who was playing George Tooke Shield last season," Goulburn coach Adam Kyle said.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 1 Preview

Image

The finals of the Canberra Raiders Cup are upon us! The Queanbeyan Blues meet the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the Grand Final qualifier, while the Goulburn Bulldogs face the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in an elimination final.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

The minor semi final sees the third placed Bulldogs face the fourth placed Kangaroos at Goulburn on Saturday. The winner will go onto play the loser of the major semi final next week - while it is the end of the season for the loser.

The Goulburn Bulldogs had a huge 80-0 win over the Gungahlin Bulls last weekend. The Bulldogs scored 15 tries, with five eighth Mitch Cornish and winger Steve Cummins both scoring four apiece. The home team led 36-0 at the break, but didn't take the foot off the accelerator at any stage.

In an extraordinary performance, three Bulldogs players ended up in the top five try scorers in the competition in 2019. Cummins finished the season on top with 19 tries, while Mitch Cornish finished equal second on 18. Mitch's brother and halves partner Nick ranked fifth, with 12. Goulburn centre Chris Hart was top goal kicker (84) and point scorer (184), well ahead of his competitors.

Even though Goulburn placed third, they were clearly the No. 1 attacking and defensive team in the competition. They averaged over 40 points scored per game, while conceding just 17. One thing that will be concerning coach Adam Kyle, however, is that in the second half of the season, their three losses came at the hands of the other teams in the top four. They beat the Kangaroos decisively in the first round at Goulburn, but the Roos turned the tables in Round 10 at Freebody, running out four point winners.

The Kangaroos accounted for the Belconnen United Sharks, 28-20, in their last outing with fullback Kaine Pagura scoring a hat trick. Pagura finished level with Mitch Cornish in the try scoring stakes this year, with an impressive tally of 18 four pointers.

The Kangaroos have trended upward in form over the year, and lost just twice in the second half of the season - to the Bushrangers and the Blues. Only the Bulldogs had a better defensive record than the Roos in 2019, while they ranked third in attack.

Both teams are in great form. Both have only one recent loss - against the minor premiers, the Blues. The Bulldogs have one of the best spines in the competition - the three Cornish brothers and dummy half Jame Aubusson. But the Kangaroos play makers have also had a great year, with Lachie Ingram shifting to half and dominating. The Roos also now have both the Robinson twins, Reece and Travis, on board - and a pack with some pretty tough forwards. I'll tip the home team, but don't be surprised if the Kangaroos get up in this one.

Queanbeyan Blues V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Queanbeyan Blues secured the Canberra Raiders Cup minor premiership in the final round of the regular season, with a 22-16 win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers.

The two teams now meet for the second week in succession.

The Blues and Bushrangers drew 34 all at Seiffert Oval earlier this year. The Blues led 34-8 at the 60 minute mark, before they conceded four tries in the final 15 minutes - and a penalty goal on full time, after the Blues failed to take a line drop out sufficiently quickly. Captain-coach Terry Campese was sent off for dissent after the incident.

Since that match, which marked the half way point in their season, the Blues have had only one slip up - a 36-32 defeat in Round 12 at the hands of the wooden spooners, the Yass Magpies. They are now on a five game winning streak - and finished the season ranking second in attack and third for least points conceded.

Tuggeranong coach Jarrad Teka no doubt knows it is not ideal to come into the finals on the back of two losses to fellow top four teams. All of the other three finalists have a better attacking and defensive record than the Bushies - they rank fifth in the league on both. Despite that, Tuggeranong has often just done what it takes to win. Four of their 11 wins have been by six points or less.

These two teams are dominated by their experienced playmakers - the veteran former Raider, Terry Campese, at five eighth for the Blues and hooker Josh Mitchell for the Bushrangers. How they perform on the day will be critical to the result. But both teams have some other standouts as well. For the Blues, centre and new captain, Jake Wheeler has been dynamic, while hooker Zac Patch was man of the match last weekend. Meanwhile, another former Raider, Michael Brophy has been a strong performer for Tuggeranong since shifting to halfback, to partner young five eighth Wez Alexander. In this match, however, he's been named in the No. 1 jersey.

The contest between these teams last week somehow felt a little subdued - with a few too many errors. However, I think we can expect a much more intense battle at Seiffert this Sunday. Given the recent form lines, I'm tipping the Blues will be the first team through to the Grand Final.

Unfortunately, this match clashes with the triple header at Canberra Stadium. But if you can't make it, you'll be able to watch a live stream of this match right here:

Canberra Raiders Cup: Week 1 Finals Wrap

The Queanbeyan Blues are the first team into the 2019 Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final, after a 32-18 win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the major semi final at Seiffert Oval on Sunday. It was the second week in a row that the Blues have defeated the Bushies - after Tuggeranong had spent most of the season leading the competition.

The home team went to half time with a 14-12 lead, with forward Josh Stuckey having bagged a double - while Terry Campese kicked a penalty goal just before the break.

First half tries for Bushrangers second rower Nathan Smith and centre Drury Low had kept Tuggeranong right in the contest - and they were first to score in the second stanza. Michael Brophy, playing in the No. 1 jersey, gave Tuggeranong the lead for the first time in the match with a try in the 47th minute. The conversion pushed the score to 18-14, in favour of the visitors - but that was the last time they would add to their tally in the match. The Blues finished more strongly, with tries to Michael Cullen, Aidan Woods and Jake Wheeler giving the Queanbeyan outfit a decisive victory.

The Bushrangers now face the Goulburn Bulldogs in the Preliminary Final next weekend. Goulburn produced a big 42-12 win on Saturday in the elimination semi final - ending the season for the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

It was a nightmare first half for the Kangaroos - with prop Josh Ayers sent from the field in the 13th minute for a late hit in the lead up to the Bulldogs second try of the afternoon. They trailed 32-0 at half time - and while the 12 man Roos team ground their way back into the contest in the second half, there was never any doubt about the result.

The Bulldogs were the first to score in the 3rd minute through five eighth Mitch Cornish. He set up the early opportunity with a terrific 40/20 kick - and it was the start of a man-of-the-match performance from the former Raider. Goulburn followed up in the 12th minute after fullback Tyler Cornish made a huge break up field from a kick return. Winger Steve Cummins capitalised, scoring in the corner. The home team led 10-0 - and the No. 1 attacking team in the competition then really opened up against a 12 man opposition.

Chris Hart scored in the 17th minute - perhaps fortuitously, after the Kangaroos knocked down a pass. Almost 25 minutes into the game, Mitch Cornish attempted another 40/20 kick - and it just failed, but Roos fullback Kaine Pagura took the ball over the sideline. Bench forward Raiden Fonoti took advantage, crossing for another Goulburn four pointer. Five mintues later, a Pagura error gave the Bulldogs another red zone opportunity, with prop Tyson Greenwood crashing over under the posts.

The Bulldogs capped off the first half with a sensational try, three minutes from "oranges". Mitch Cornish made a great line break up the middle, and was backed up by his brother Nick - who then offloaded to the try scorer, second rower Isiah Tittor. The Bulldogs went to half time leading 32-0 and the match was essentially already over.

Goulburn winger Steve Cummins got his second try of the day in the 49th minute - Chris Hart setting it up with a great offload.

With the Dogs leading 38-0, the Kangaroos started to get more possession and territory - and they had several try scoring chances. The Roos finally converted one of those chances in the 63rd minute, when Nukurua Ngere followed a grubber kick, planting the ball in the in goal. The Roos followed up 10 minutes later with a consolation try for Kaine Pagura out wide, with the Queanbeyan outfit sending the ball to the short side from the base of a scrum.

However, the Bulldogs had the last word, with three minutes left on the clock. Reece Robinson was unable to clean up a Tyler Cornish grubber to the in goal - and centre Dillon Rota raced in to ground it.

Veterans lead Goulburn Bulldogs one step closer to Canberra Raiders Cup

Michael Dodson and Shane McCallum could have hung up the boots a decade ago and nobody would have batted an eyelid.

"It is pretty special. They're both really passionate about the Bulldogs and I'm really proud for them to get a win in our last home game," Kyle said of Dodson and McCallum.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers beaten Blue in Canberra Raiders Cup semi-final

Queanbeyan earned their ticket to the grand final following an emphatic 32-18 win over Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Seiffert Oval on Sunday.

"It was a hard-fought battle and there was a lot of aggression in the play," Blues coach Terry Campese said. "Our boys were outstanding and but there's a few blokes with injuries so we're lucky to have the next week off."

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Preliminary Final Preview

Image

One team has already progressed to the Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final - and this week we find out who joins them, when the Tuggeranong Bushrangers clash with the Goulburn Bulldogs in the Preliminary Final at Gungahlin on Sunday.

The Queanbeyan Blues were the first move into the premiership decider, after a 32-18 win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the major semi final at Seiffert Oval on Sunday. It was the second week in a row that the Blues had defeated the Bushies - after Tuggeranong had spent most of the season leading the competition.

The home team went to half time with a 14-12 lead, with forward Josh Stuckey having bagged a double - while Terry Campese kicked a penalty goal just before the break. The Bushrangers took an 18-14 lead early in the second half, after a try to Michael Brophy - but it was all the Blues in final stages, with tries to Michael Cullen, Aidan Woods and Jake Wheeler giving the Queanbeyan outfit a decisive victory.

The Bushrangers now get their second bite at the cherry in the Preliminary Final. Their opponents, the Goulburn Bulldogs produced a big 42-12 win on Saturday in the elimination semi final - ending the season for the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

It was a nightmare first half for the Kangaroos at Goulburn - with prop Josh Ayers sent from the field in the 13th minute for a late hit in the lead up to the Bulldogs second try of the afternoon. They trailed 32-0 at half time - and while the 12 man Roos team ground their way back into the contest in the second half, there was never any doubt about the result. The Bulldogs ended with eight tries, two to winger Steve Cummins.

Bulldogs five eighth Mitch Cornish was awarded the McIntyre Medal this week for the best and fairest player in 2019 - and coach Adam Kyle knows how valuable he has been to the team - and what a crucial role he'll play on Sunday.

"Mitchell is such a great guy to have around. He's welcoming, very friendly and always happy to help around the club. I was really happy that he put that [performance] on, on the weekend [against the Kangaroos," Kyle said.

The Bushrangers beat the Bulldogs in both of the matches played between the clubs earlier this year - but there was not a lot in it in either game. For Kyle, that record underlines the magnitude of the challenge in the Preliminary Final.

"They've beat us twice, we haven't beaten them this season. For us it's going to be a really tough contest, and we're expecting them to bounce back after three losses in a row," Kyle said.

Tuggeranong coach Jarrad Teka was also a winner on McIntyre Medal night - taking away the Coach of the Year award. The Bushrangers held the mantle of the No. 1 team in the league from Round 4 until Round 17 - and it was a just reward for their mentor.

But having now lost their last three game straight - missing the minor premiership in the process - Teka says his team is going to need to find another gear, and get back to the their best.

"We're going to have to be very smart, very clinical," Teka said.

The Bushies were not the best attacking or defensive team in the competition - the Bulldogs very clearly finished with that title. For the most part, they just seemed to know what to do to win. However, that winning spark has been missing the last few weeks - whereas the Bulldogs seem have been in great recent form. Goulburn's trio of playmakers, the Cornish brothers, have been generating an avalanche of points. Add in the fact that the Preliminary Final will be played on neutral turf, I'm tipping the Bulldogs to qualify for the premiership decider.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Mitch Cornish rediscovers his love for rugby league at Goulburn Bulldogs

The Sydney Roosters gave Mitch Cornish a rugby league "lifeline", but the Goulburn Bulldogs gave him a chance to fall in love again.

"I [started to hate] the fact rugby league became a job. I wasn't enjoying it ... I got to the point where I was happy to come home. To play with my brothers was the ultimate goal and I'm absolutely loving it."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Preliminary Final Wrap

The Goulburn Bulldogs will join the Queanbeyan Blues in the Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final, after a huge 42-4 victory at Gungahlin on Sunday. Bulldogs try scoring wizard Steven Cummins scored four tries, while half Nick Cornish bagged a double, in a comprehensive defeat for the team that led the competition for the bulk of the season.

The Bulldogs scored three tries in the first half, with Cummins crossing twice inside the first 20 minutes. Goulburn five eighth Mitch Cornish scored the third in the 26th minute, the result of a typical stepping run.

The Bushrangers scored their only points with two minutes remaining in the first half, after five Wez Alexander put in a grubber which rebounded and ended in the hands of Drury Low.

The teams went to the break with Goulburn leading 16-4 - and the Bulldogs went right on with the job in the second half, piling on five tries.

Bulldogs coach Adam Kyle was understandably proud of his team's performance.

"When we play Goulburn football and look after our own backyard, we put on good performances," Kyle told The Canberra Times.

"We're the best attacking side of the competition but I'm really proud of our defence to keep a quality side to four points."

It was a sad exit for the Tuggeranong Bushrangers who had led the competition from Round 4 up until the final round of the regular season. They gave the Blues the opportunity to take the minor premiership when they lost to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in Round 17. After dropping just two games all season, Tuggeranong lost both of their final two fixtures to finish second - and then lost both of their finals matches.

The Bulldogs' victory sets up an enticing Grand Final contest - which sees the minor premiers, the Blues face the team with the best attacking and defensive record in the competition. It should be a classic.

2019 Canberra Raiders Cup: Grand Final Preview

Image

The Canberra Raiders Cup reaches its climax on Sunday, when the Queanbeyan Blues meet the Goulburn Bulldogs in the Grand Final at Seiffert Oval.

The Queanbeyan Blues have dominated Canberra district rugby league since the current competition commenced in 1932. They won the premiership that year and have won 23 more since then. That's more than twice the number of titles than any other team has to their name. In the past decade, the Blues have won three premierships and appeared in six Grand Finals. They're a powerhouse of the competition.

The Goulburn Bulldogs have also had their share of success since entering the competition in 1958 - winning their first premiership in that first season. They've won eight in all, but have not taken the victory dias since 2009 - when they defeated the West Belconnen Warriors, 29-24. They made it to the Grand Final again in 2014 and 2015 - but they suffered back-to-back losses to... you guessed it... the Queanbeyan Blues.

The Blues finished as minor premiers in 2019, despatching the Tuggeranong Bushrangers two weeks running to qualify first for the Grand Final. The Bushrangers had led the competition since Round 4, but conceded the minor premiership to the Blues in the final round of the regular season. Prior to that the Blues had held the number one place on the ladder for just one round - Round 1 - purely on points differential. After posting a 32-18 victory in the major semi final, the Blues have had the benefit of a week off prior to the decider. They are on a six game winning streak and will be well prepared for the Grand Final.

2019 Major Semi Final: Queanbeyan Blues V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Goulburn Bulldogs might have finished the season in third place, but they were the No. 1 attacking and defensive team in the competition - averaging 42 points scored and just 16 points conceded on average per match. Their last loss was an eight point defeat at the hands of the Blues at Seiffert Oval, just over a month ago. But since then, they have racked up over 160 points in just three matches - posting over 40 points in both of their finals matches. They defeated the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 42-12, in week one of the finals, and conceded just one try to the Bushrangers in a 42-4 victory in the Preliminary Final.

2019 Preliminary Final: Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Goulburn Bulldogs

The Bulldogs probably have the best spine in the competition - the three Cornish brothers, Mitch, Tyler and Nick, plus experienced dummy half, James Aubusson. They have the top try scorer in winger Steven Cummins and the top point scorer in goal kicking centre, Chris Hart. And they have a good young forward pack, led by Tyson Greenwood.

The Blues, of course, have their own talismen. Former Raiders captain - and Blues player-coach - Terry Campese is now a veteran, but he is a master play maker. Add in the likes of dynamic centre, and new captain, Jake Wheeler, hooker Zac Patch and star forward Josh Stuckey - and we have the basis of a great contest.

Jake Wheeler says the Blues have prepared well and have no injury concerns going into the match. But he is wary of the Bulldogs' lethal attack.

"Obviously Goulburn's got the Cornish brothers and they've got some good flair about them," Wheeler said.

"Mitch leads them around the park well. He doesn't get the player of the competition for no reason. Obviously, he's firing and the other boys are following him. We've got to shut them down."

His view on how to do that exactly?

"Run at them."

Bulldogs' forward Izzy Tittor says that Goulburn's run to the Grand Final has them playing with confidence and has fine-tuned their game.

"The more footy we play, the better we get. Hopefully, we've loaded up nicely for the Grand Final this week," Tittor said.

"If we just start fast, start scoring points... well we were the best attacking side and the best defensive side, so if we just continue that, we'll be right."

Tittor says there is a real buzz in Goulburn and the Bulldogs are expecting huge numbers of fans to travel to Seiffert.

"I went to Woolworth's this week twice, and I've had so many people come up to me to tell me 'good luck... you've been playing well'," Tittor said.

"I've no idea who they are, but it adds 20 minutes on to my trip to Woolies! I guess there'll be heaps of people coming out this week. It is really good, the town loves it."

Both teams have one win from the clashes this season between the clubs. The Bulldogs, however, are probably peaking at exactly the right time. I think Goulburn might just have the edge. Whatever the result, it should be a great contest.
