40th min TRY MAGPIES after the bell to Braden Robson. Poor defence from Mounties to let that one in, so quickly after the last try. Mounties were clearly the better team for most of the second half... but two defensive lapses in the space of three minutes see them lead by just four points at the break.

52nd min Great defence Mounties to force Magpies winger Harrison O’Toole into the in goal and force a drop out. Great chase on the Raiwalui kick. Unfortunately Mounties can’t capitalise, dropped ball.

Understrength Mounties prevail over Western Suburbs Magpies

Minus a host of their Intrust Super Premiership NSW regulars, Mounties have shown they'll once again be a big threat come the business end of the season, trouncing the Western Suburbs Magpies 28-8 at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday.

Their roster stretched due to injury, suspension and NRL commitments, Mounties overcame what looked to be a much stronger Magpies outfit – crossing for five tries against the competition's second-best defensive outfit.

MOUNTIES 28 (J Martin C Garvey C Horsburgh E Murphy B O'Hagan tries T Milne 4 goals) bt WESTERN SUBURBS 8 (T Tali B Robson tries)

Good win by both grades.

Garvey is a gun, I would rather have him stay and Ricky mend what ever bridge he burnt than bring back Baptiste.

20’s need to realise there is a right side in there structure. The left edge over played today. Same as last week. Regardless a good win. Our middle went well. Great to see Corey and Brendan play extremely well in NSW Cup

Probably injured and in doubt or maybe likely to move up and play for senior Mounties with Guler/Hunt or Murchie playing firsts.

It is not a good thing to get dropped to Canberra Raiders Cup from Under 20s. Not sure what's going on with it... I'm imagining the only issue can be defence, and he's been sent back to play against senior players to get his defence right.

Initially I thought he was injured, but he's played in CRCup for a couple of weeks now.

2017 NSW Premiership Round 19: Mounties preview

Image

In Round 19, Mounties play the Blacktown Sea Eagles in NSW Premiership on Saturday at Aubrey Keech Reserve and the Manly Sea Eagles in Jersey Flegg at Brookvale Oval on Sunday.

NSW Premiership: Mounties had a confidence boosting win, 28-8, over the Western Suburbs Magpies in Round 18. Mounties were stretched by the Canberra Raiders’ injuries and suspensions - and some injury of their own - but still put in a very good performance against the fifth placed Magpies. Mounties dominated for much of the first half, but let the Magpies in for two tries in the space of three minutes, just before half time - and took just a 12-8 lead to the break. However, the Mounties were in full control in the second half, putting on tries to Corey Horsburgh, Ed Murphy and Brendan O’Hagan.

Craig Garvey (one try, 102 metres gained, one try assist, one line break assist, two line breaks, three tackle breaks, 34 tackles), Taane Milne (14 runs, 120 metres gained, one line break assist, two tackle breaks, two offloads, 10 tackles, four goals) and Brendan O’Hagan, on debut (one try, two try assists, one line break assist, one line break, two tacklebreaks, 22 tackles), impressed for Mounties. Jarrett Boland (39), Craig Garvey (34) and Corey Horsburgh, backing up from Under 20s Origin (27), topped the tackle count for Mounties. Mitch Cahalane (159m), Tony Satini (152m) and Royce Hunt (138m) produced most metres with the ball in hand.

Mounties are placed second on the competition table, but are still three competition points away from of the ladder leading Penrith Panthers. Their opponents this weekend, the Blacktown Sea Eagles, are placed eighth. Mounties have a 10 and six record so far this season, while the Sea Eagles have seven wins, eight losses and a draw to their name. The Sea Eagles have a LWLWL record in their past five matches, losing to the Wyong Roos, 26-18, in their last outing. Mounties have a WWLLW form line.

Mounties have the advantage in both attack and defence. Mounties have averaged 28 points scored per match, compared with 22 for the Sea Eagles, in 2018. In defence, Mounties have conceded an average 20 points per match, compared with 22 for The Sea Eagles. Mounties have a positive points differential of 122, the Magpies +6. Mounties had a 26-6 win over the Sea Eagles when the teams met earlier this year in Round 4.

Team changes: For Mounties, the only change to the starting line up that defeated the Magpies was the inclusion of Jack Murchie in the second row, for Steven Tavita. Murchie, however, has since been named for his Raiders debut. Expect Tavita, named 18th man, to come back into the top 17. On the bench, Joel Luani replaces Josh Saunders Jones. Sitiveni Moceidreke is again missing for Mounties this week, with Jordan Martin named on the wing. The Sea Eagles are unchanged from the team that took the field last week.

Our tip: Mounties are again stretched, as the Raiders draw on their depth players, but there is some good young talent coming through the ranks. It’ll be a good test for the youngsters against the Sea Eagles. But we will go with the team with home ground advantage. Mounties in a close one.

Jersey Flegg: Mounties had an 18-12 win over the Wests Tigers in Round 18, scoring all 18 points in the first half - and withstanding the second half comeback of the last placed Tigers. The victory sees Mounties retain fourth place on the ladder, with a 10 and five record so far this season. Their opposition this week, the Manly Sea Eagles, are placed ninth on the competition table, with a five and 10 record. Mounties are now on a five game winning streak, while the Sea Eagles have a LLLWL record in their past five matches. Manly narrowly lost, 30-28, to the Sydney Roosters last week.

Mounties have a better attacking and defensive record than the Sea Eagles. Mounties have averaged 23 points scored per match, compared with 21 for the Sea Eagles. In defence, Mounties have conceded an average of 21 points per match, while the Sea Eagles have conceded 27. Mounties have a small positive points differential (+36); the Sea Eagles have a negative points differential of 89. Earlier in 2918, Mounties won 28-12 over the Sea Eagles in Round 4.

Mounties have named the same team that took the field against the Wests Tigers. For the Sea Eagles, Alfred Smalley comes onto the wing for Dane Oostendorp Power. John Tuivaiti has been named at starting prop, replacing Keith Titmuss, who drops to the bench.

While Mounties are dealing with the promotion of some regular players to NSW Premiership, good young players like half Toby Westcott have come into the side. We’ll tip Mounties to take this one.

MATCH REPORT: Blacktown Sea Eagles pipped by Mounties

Mounties have put aside a determined Blacktown Workers outfit, edging the Sea Eagles 22-14 in the side's Round 19 Intrust Super Premiership NSW meeting at Aubrey Keech Reserve.

Heading into the match in second on the competition's standings, Mounties were widely tipped to get the two points over their rivals – but in a reminder of the closeness of the competition, they were made to fight and work for every inch in an all-engrossing affair.
