Less impressive this week but still big workloads. I think playing Knight for 70+ minutes every week is overdoing it.

2017 NSW Premiership Finals Week 1: Mounties preview

Image

The first week of finals is already here, with Mounties meeting the New Zealand Warriors in the NSW Premiership at Panthers Stadium - and the Newcastle Knights in Jersey Flegg at Hunter Stadium - this Saturday.

NSW Premiership: Mounties fell to their fifth loss in a row in Round 24, defeated 26-12 by the second placed St George Illawarra Dragons at Canberra Stadium. The lead see-sawed during the first half. Mounties' Daniel Roberts posted the first four pointer of the match in the 10th minute, before a brace of tries to the Dragons gave the visitors a 10-6 lead after 22 minutes. Mounties hit back just before half time, when Corey Horsburgh bumped off the Dragons' defenders to crash over in the 38th minute. Mounties went to the break leading 12-10, but the Dragons controlled the second half, piling on three tries to nil.

In the end, Mounties were well out-played, with the Dragons having 53 per cent of the ball, running 1735 metres (Mounties 1338 metres), and making eight line breaks (Mounties two). Liam Knight (12 runs for 116 metres, two tackle breaks, 45 tackles), Corey Horsbourgh (one try, 11 runs for 92 metres, five tackle breaks, one line break, 32 tackles) and Sitiveni Moceidreke (18 runs for 137 metres, one tackle break, three offloads) were among the best for Mounties. Liam Knight (45), Jarrett Boland (40) and Sam Duggan (38), topped the tackle count for Mounties. Moceidreke (137m), Taane Milne (124m) and Knight (116m) produced most metres gained.

Mounties finished in sixth place on the ladder - after leading the competition for a good part of the season. They now meet the seventh placed New Zealand Warriors in an elimination final. Mounties ended up winning half their matches this season, while the Warriors finished with a 10 and 12 record. The Warriors broke a six game losing streak last weekend, with a 24-22 victory over the second-last Bears.

Mounties have the better attacking and defensive record. This year, Mounties have averaged 24 points scored per match, compared with 20 for the Warriors. Mounties have conceded an average 21 points per match, the Warriors 22. Mounties have a positive points differential of 71, while the Warriors sit on -60. The two teams played in Round 9 at Aubrey Keech Reserve, when Mounties ran out 30-26 winners. The re-match in Round 16 saw the Warriors turn the tables at Mt Smart Stadium, winning 24-20.

Team changes: For Mounties, Brendan O'Hagan comes back into the team to partner Tyler Cornish in the halves. Sam Duggan moves back to hooker, with Daniel Roberts dropping to the bench. Corey Horsburgh is named at starting lock, with Jack Murchie on the reserves list for the Raiders. Josh Saunders Jones has been included on the bench, with Paul Roache dropping out of the squad. The Warriors have named the same starting team as last week and made only one change on the bench, with Patrick Sipley replacing Reece Charlie.

Our tip: These are two teams in poor recent form. Mounties have suffered badly from disruptions to their line up in the past month or so - caused by the exit of Craig Garvey, and suspension and injuries for the Raiders. Mounties will, however, be stronger this week, with the inclusion of O'Hagan in the halves. Whichever team progresses, they'll find it difficult to move beyond Week 2. The thing that may assist Mounties in Week 2 would be the return of some players from the Raiders’ top squad. It won't surprise if the Warriors produce an "upset" this week, but we'll stick with Mounties to turn it around and win in a close one. Mounties by four.

Jersey Flegg: In Jersey Flegg, Mounties produced an 18-14 victory over the eighth-placed St George Illawarra Dragons in their last start at Canberra Stadium. It was a close affair, with both teams posting three tries and goal kicking proving the difference. Mounties led 12-10 at half time, and withstood a late challenge from the Dragons.

Mounties finished the regular season in fourth place on the ladder - and that pitches them into a battle with the minor premiers, Newcastle, on the Knights' home turf. Mounties have a 14 and six record so far this season, but the Knights have recorded 17 wins and just three losses. The Knights had a bye last weekend and had a narrow 28-26 win over the Panthers in their last start. They have a LWWW record in their past five games, last losing to the Panthers, 18-4, in Round 19. Mounties have won nine of their past 10 matches. The worrying thing is that the only loss in that period was a 42-6 defeat at the hands of the Knights in Round 21 at St Johns Oval. On the plus side, Mounties are one of the teams to have defeated the Knights - by 36-30 at Aubrey Keech Reserve in Round 13.

The Knights have the better attacking and defensive records in 2018. Newcastle has averaged a massive 32 points per match, compared with 22 for Mounties. In addition, Newcastle has conceded just 17 points per match, Mounties 19. Mounties have a positive points differential of 62; the Knights a very healthy +300.

Mounties have named an unchanged line-up from the team that defeated the Dragons last week. For the Knights, Matthew Cooper comes in for Tex Hoy at fullback, with Hoy moving to five eighth. Nash Birch shifts from five eighth to hooker. Starford Toa and Mitchell Andrews are the centre pairing, replacing Heath Gibbs and Lachlan Farr. Pasami Saulo has been named at starting prop, while Henry-Siriah Fuimaono has been left out of the squad. Benjamin Talty and Brandon Russell drop to the bench, while Kurtis Dark and Beau Fermor have been named to start in the second row. Jack Cameron and Kingston Puru drop off the interchange bench.

I'd love to think that Mounties can spring an upset on the Knights, as they did earlier this year. But it will be very tough to do, in Newcastle. Sadly, the head says this should be a Knights win, by a good margin. The positive for Mounties is that a top four finish comes with a second chance, should that prediction come to pass.

116m and 45 tackles is very impressive

Least we know he has the motor for it, which will be good for 19 especially if the interchanges drop

Are the likes of Abbey and Guler still eligible for Mounties or have they played too much NRL this year?

Thanks GE. Hopefully they can help Mounties in the finals. They ran out of steam last week and the right side defence in particular was targeted by St.George. A shame Garvey is no longer with them.

Moceidreke is a pretty good kicker, normally.

Mounties looking very shaky here, Warriors trail by just six now, with 12 minutes to go.

MATCH REPORT: Jersey Flegg Mounties upset Newcastle Knights to move to Preliminary Final

The Mounties are just one win away from the Jersey Flegg Cup Grand Final, following a thrilling 25-24 upset win over minor premiers the Newcastle Knights, at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Mounties took a six point lead with 11 minutes remaining, when Andre Niko took advantage of some poor defence on the left edge to crash over in the corner. And then with eight minutes remaining, the margin was pushed out to seven, when Toby Westcott slotted a field goal from right in front.

The Knights scored with four minutes left, cutting the lead to just one, but a dropped ball in the next set off the kick-off eased the pressure on the visiting team who held on for the win, Mounties earning a Preliminary Finals berth in the process.

I travelled up to watch the Flegg and NRL at Newcastle. Great win for our team in the flegg! Gutsy and well controlled by the halves at the end. Future looks bright in that department. A great crowd for the Flegg also.

MATCH REPORT: Mounties Tyler Cornish field goal sinks New Zealand Warriors

A Tyler Cornish field goal has seen Mounties advance to Week Two of the finals in a 21-20 thriller over the Warriors. Brendan O’Hagan returned after being sidelined with a shoulder injury last week and was always a threat around the ball, but the stand-out no doubt was Liam Knight who led Mounties pack with brute force and will tonight.

The Warriors fought back in the second half, to draw level with Mounties 20-20 with 10 minutes remaining. However, with less than five minutes remaining Mounties found themselves in good field position off the back of a six-again call, and Tyler Cornish slotted a field goal – Mounties’ first for the year – to nudge their lead out to one point.

How did Wescott go? First grade potential in a few years?

Very relaxed at the end and slotted the field goal. Kicked four from four also in very windy conditions. If they can get him full time and put just a bit more upper body on him he will be great potentially as a partner for Ohagan. Good talker and just seemed to get behind the ruck at the end and finish it. Very old school sort of player. The whole team went well yesterday. Very good game of footy to watch as you would expect in a top 4 semi. I suspect if ISP are eliminated next week that a few will drop back like Horsborough and Ohagan. Is Kris eligible? Regardless great day for the lower grades.

Wow! Looking back through Westcott still has another year in 20’s with Medlyn, Timoko (who was strong yesterday) and the hooker Paterson! If thats the case they should be locking those boys in early to mid next year on the rookie contracts! Medlyn is outstanding in the middle but has been out injured i think. Timoko super strong centre, Paterson dynamic hooker and Westcott just glueing it all together. Roache was good yesterday as well but i think he is more a fullback or lock in the making. Silky skills and loves to run. Just not the traditional half which i think the game is going back to. Future looks really bright if we can hold them. The next few weeks look pretty good also if thats the case with Horsborough, Kris and Ohagan potentially dropping back! Looks like some good early recruiting has been done so well done.
