Tough penalty but Liam knight is a complete Muppet. Ref told him exactly what to do twice and he still couldn't do it.greeneyed wrote:What on earth was the referee thinking, giving a scrum penalty at the end?

Guler and Garvey were great.
Hingano was terrible but he's had no preparation. Should improve a lot over the next few weeks.
Mounties should go big this year. Strong forwards. Strike power out wide. Good spine.
3 Garvey
2 Guler
1 Duggan
Re: 2018 Mounties
Thanks for all the updates Bay53 et al. Sounds like Garvey is doing his bit in applying pressure for a FG spot. Good on him.
I am a fan of Kalani Going. He was named in the squad for Mounties. Did he get a run and if so, how did he go?

Re: 2018 Mounties
He did get a run. Didn't get a big chance to make an impact but ran hard. Good play the ball speed.
The real test for a guy his size playing in the middle will be defence but by the time he came on we were controlling the middle and saints didn't really ever put him under pressure.

Re: 2018 Mounties
Guler arrived with some big raps. I knew we'd have to wait for him to grow into his size but it would be nice to have another big scary unit. How does his movement look?

MATCH REPORT: Mounties win Wollongong thriller
Mounties have recorded a thrilling victory in Round 1 of the Intrust Super Premiership NSW competition, beating St George Illawarra 22-20 in hot and humid conditions at WIN Stadium in Wollongong.
The Dragons raced to a 14-point lead in the first half but ultimately it was the class of Mounties’ outside backs and the clever play of hooker Craig Garvey that saw them finish on top in a game that went down to the wire.
Mounties 22 (M Oldfield, S Duggan, S Duggan, M Ravalawa tries; S Moceidreke 3 goals) def St George Illawarra Dragons 20 (J Field, P Herbert, J Ford, J Payne tries; J Field 2 goals)

Re: 2018 Mounties
Looks good. Looked like he changed the pace of the game when coming on but that's also because the drags bench props didn't offer much and we controlled the ball a lot better after a very rusty start.BadnMean wrote:Guler arrived with some big raps. Need a few more rounds to judge properly.
Although given he's so young and looking more than comfortable he could be pushing for a bench spot next year. He's a development player as far as I'm aware so can't play first grade this year.
He's bigger than batmen and Lui but smaller than boyd and Paulo. Good middle ground. He's not a scary unit at the moment. Just an effective one.

Re: 2018 Mounties
I think everyone has over rated Garvey’s game tbh. Made some really really poor decisions in attack. May have been trying too hard to impress. But things like kicking early without even looking a few times are pretty crucial errors
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

Mounties coach Ryan Carr driven by legends
First-year Mounties coach Ryan Carr has started his Intrust Super Premiership NSW career in the best possible fashion – but one of Rugby League’s youngest elite coaches is just thankful for the opportunity. Carr’s side won a thriller 22-20 in Saturday’s clash with the Dragons at Wollongong in his first match at this level.
“The nerves were definitely going there,” Carr said. “I’m really, really proud of the boys, the way they fought back, after we didn’t start great. I couldn’t be more proud of their effort.

2017 NSW Premiership Round 2: Mounties preview
Mounties V Wyong Roos
Saturday 17 March 3pm
Aubrey Keech Reserve
On line radio: http://steelesports.com.au/
Mounties play their first home match of the NSW Premiership this Saturday afternoon against the Wyong Roos, the affiliate club of the Sydney Roosters.
Last match: They head into the match as first up winners, producing an exciting 22-20 win over the Dragons at Wollongong in Round 1. The Dragons were dominant early, scoring three tries and going to a 14-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Mounties' nemesis from the 2017 finals, star fullback Jai Field, was the first try scorer. But Mt Pritchard fought back through tries to Michael Oldfield and Sam Duggan - and trailed by just two points at the break.
The Dragons skipped to a 20-12 lead 10 minutes into the second half, through a try to Jack Payne. But again the Mounties fought back. New recruit from the North Sydney Bears, Ed Murphy, scored in the 56th minute - showing why he was a member of the ISP NSW Team of the Year in 2017. And when Raiders winger Mikaele Ravalawa went over in the corner in the 65th minute, the men in black and yellow had drawn level. Sitiveni Moceidreke converted from the sideline, and his towering goal would ultimately prove the difference.
As the clock ticked down, the Dragons reefed the ball downfield 70 metres... and chaser Zac Lomax thought he'd scored after a one on one strip on the try line. However he was in front of the kicker. The Dragons had other opportunities in the red zone in the final minutes as well... but could not get across the line.
Hooker Craig Garvey (one try assist, one line break assist, one line-break, five tackle breaks, 31 tackles), winger Mikaele Ravalawa (one try, 10 runs, 171 metres gained , two line breaks, three tackle breaks) and forward Emre Guler (11 runs, 122 metres gained, 38 post contact metres, 18 tackles) were amongst the most impressive players for Mounties.
This week's contest: Mounties can expect this to be a tough match. The Wyong Roos were the minor premiers and grand finalists in 2017, but lost the NSW Premiership decider to the Penrith Panthers. The Roos were first up winners in Round 1 - narrow winners - over the Newtown Jets. The teams traded tries, with the scores level at 24-24 for much of the final 10 minutes. A field goal in the 79th minute from Roos' half back Paul Momirovski broke the deadlock and gave the home team a one point victory.
“It was far from a complete performance, but the two points is big for us," Momirovski said after the match. "Towards the end there it probably didn’t feel like we deserved it. We were a bit patchy throughout, but it is only Round 1. Things will get better as our match fitness improves.”
Apart from Momirovski, Mounties will need to watch centre Matt Ikuvalu (one try, 15 runs, 135 metres, five tackle breaks in Rd 1), hooker Mitch Williams (two try assists, one line break assist, one tackle break, 42 tackles in Rd 1) and prop Eloni Vunakece (17 runs, 164 metres gained, three tackle breaks, 30 tackles).
Team changes: With the late recruitment of Ata Hingano by the Canberra Raiders, there were a number of late changes for Mounties in Round 1. Tyler Cornish moved to fullback, with Hingano included at half back and Michael Oldfield coming into the top 17 at centre. All three have again been selected in those positions - so the line up for the clash with the Roos is unchanged from the one that took the field in Round 1. For Wyong, Poasa Faamausili moves from prop to lock, swapping starting roles with Lindsay Collins. The Roos' top 17 is otherwise unchanged.
Our tip: This should be a great contest and closely fought. Mounties look to have a stronger squad in 2018 than they had last season and they'll have the home ground advantage in this one. It is still early in the season and difficult to predict form. But we will go with the home team. Mounties by four.
Jersey Flegg: The Mounties Under 20s will meet the Sydney Roosters in Jersey Flegg in the curtain raiser.
Mounties suffered a 20-12 defeat in Round 1, with the Dragons setting the pace early. St George Illawarra led 14-0 after around 25 minutes. But Mounties tries to half Brendan O’Hagan and back rower Daniel Keir either side of half time saw the home side's advantage cut to two points. The Dragons wrapped it up with a try to prop Josh Dowel with 10 minutes remaining.
The Roosters were comprehensively defeated 38-14 by the Cronulla Sharks in Round 1, with the Roosters held scoreless for almost 60 minutes.
In the only change for Mounties, Navaetangi Soni replaces Darby Medlyn as starting prop, with Medlyn moving back to the bench. There are lots of changes for the Roosters. Nicholas O'Meley takes over at fullback, with Treymain Spry moving to the wing. As a result, winger Zane Blake drops to the reserves list. Daniel Suluka Fifita and Jackson Frei take over as starting props. Lyndon Hills moves into the second row, with Josh Curran taking over from Frei at lock. Captain Kenese Kenese drops to the bench, with Freddy Lussick coming into the top 17 on the interchange list.
Based on Round 1 form, this will hopefully be the first win of the season for Mounties!
