Reintroducing Jersey Flegg

The Jersey Flegg Cup is back in 2018 after a 10-year absence, with the NSWRL reviving the historic competition following the cessation of the NRL-run under-20s National Youth Competition.

The competition is named after Harry “Jersey” Flegg, who played for the Eastern Suburbs in 1908 and 1909, and was a prominent administrator of the game up until 1960.

Ten of the 12 clubs will enter a team under their NRL brand, with only the South Sydney Rabbitohs (North Sydney Bears) and Canberra (Mounties) affiliating with their feeder club for the competition:

Newcastle Knights
Manly Sea Eagles
Wests Tigers
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs
Penrith Panthers
Parramatta Eels
Mounties
North Sydney Bears
Cronulla Sharks
St George Illawarra Dragons
New Zealand Warriors
Sydney Roosters

Round 4 Mounties V Blacktown Sea Eagles, Raiders V Sea Eagles, Brookvale Oval
Round 7 Mounties V North Sydney Bears, Raiders V Rabbitohs, Central Coast Stadium
Round 9 Mounties V Warriors, Raiders V Titans, Canberra Stadium
Round 17 Mounties V Bulldogs, Raiders V Bulldogs, Belmore Sports Ground
Round 22 Mounties V Wests Magpies, Raiders V Tigers, Canberra Stadium
Round 24 Mounties V Dragons, Raiders V Rabbitohs, Canberra Stadium

I would be surprised if they were triple headers. The Jersey Flegg comp is not going to be on tv so I doubt they will have three games. I think there is more chance of having Jersey Flegg as a curtain raiser when there is no Mounties.

Our away games at Penrith and Campbelltown have NSW Cup curtain raisers too but not Mounties. I think our game in Brisbane has a Q Cup curtain raiser.

There are 3 home triple headers.

What do you base that on? The Jersey Flegg draw hasn’t been been announced.

Really interested to see how many of the young guys turn out in the Mounties side.

Murchie will definitely be there starting in the 2nd row.
Guler will grab a bench spot. Stefano Hala might. The starting Rotation is probably something like Knight (8) / Hunt (10) / Bateman (13).
Sebastian Kris looked at ease in the trial and should lock down a centre spot all year.
Sitiveni Moceidreke should be there somewhere given Mounties lack of depth on the edges after losing 3 starting players.

1. Brad Abbey
2. Michael Oldfield
3. Sebastian Kris
4. Ed Murphy
5. Sitiveni Moceidreke
6. Paul Roache
7. Cooper Bambling
8. Liam Knight
9. Siliva Havili
10. Royce Hunt (if he doesn't get a first grade spot)
11. Makahesi Makatoa
12. Jack Murchie
13. Luke Bateman (c) (if he doesn't get a first grade spot)

14. Sam Duggan (c)
15. Corey Horsburgh
16. Dunamis Lui
17. Emre Guler

Should be better than last year. That spine is better than 2017 and the trial showed our depth is good this year.

Edit: Made some changes based on the trial and seeing some players running around for other club's reserve grades.

Mounties claim win in first trial

The Mounties enjoyed a 22-10 win against fellow Intrust Super Premiership side the Canterbury Bulldogs in their first trial match of the year on Saturday evening.

“I was really happy with their effort,” Carr said. “I thought their attitude in defence was great and that was something we were looking for in our first hit-out.

Mounties take on the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles in another trial match this weekend.

No, Mounties said they didn't even keep any, with players moving between the U20s trial and top grade trial. The Raiders said nine Raiders players turned out... but no names named. I think it is unfortunately, one of the results of the downgrading of the lower grades by the NRL and the clubs.

To be fair when all three grades came under the Raiders banner I am not sure that great records were kept of who played in lower grade trials.

I really don't understand the subterfuge re teamlists. Your first round opponent is going to be able to get that information. All you do is rip off interested fans.

I'm guessing one of the first grade hookers may have played in the trial, hence the subterfuge?

Roache is playing down a grade on what I would've expected after his offseason wraps.

Given they all only played half a game for Jersey Flegg, I suspect a lot of the Raiders contracted players had more time in the NSW Premiership trial.

Plus I'd be surprised if anyone in contention for first grade was playing Mounties... they'd have been playing the internal opposed trial in Canberra on Saturday morning.

Oh ok, I didn't realise there was an opposed trial in firsts.

Not exactly a team list but I did notice the Raiders site has updated the Teams section and with new Mounties players. No suprises but it does confirm Tyler Cornish and Jarrad Kennedy are playing this year and Mociedreke and Ed Murphy from the trial are also there as Mounties players.

Photos are updated for first grade as well.

World Cup combatants to lead Mounties

The departure of one-time Raiders halfback Lachlan Croker and journeyman Isaac John would have been cause for concern at Mounties, but the void was quickly filled; 2016 Intrust Super Premiership Player of the Year Sam Williams returns for his third stint in the Raiders’ system, while existing half Henry Raiwalui turned plenty of heads performing for Fiji in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

Throw in the signature of Tongan young gun Ata Hingano, and new Mounties coach Ryan Carr has a healthy surplus of playmakers.
