They should have won this one, but they've got wenty and the dragons next. Wenty are coming 2nd last and they should beat them. Dragons will probably touch them up unless a few of them are promoted to the NRL side to cover injuries.

2017 NSW Premiership Round 23: Mounties preview

Image

In Round 23, Mounties play the Wentworthville Magpies in NSW Premiership on Sunday at Ringrose Park, while the Jersey Flegg team has a bye.

NSW Premiership: Mounties were 31-30 losers to the Western Suburbs Magpies last Sunday at Canberra Stadium, with Tyson Gamble kicking the winning field goal for the Magpies in the 80th minute. It was an intensely disappointing loss, given Mounties scored six tries to five - but Taane Milne had an off day with the goal kicking. Mounties had a 55 per cent share of possession, made more running metres (1462m-1223m) and line breaks (8-5), and received more penalties (9-4) - yet Mounties still found a way to lose.

Royce Hunt (four tackle breaks, two offloads, 18 tackles, 17 runs for 178 total metres), Emre Guler (one tackle break, one offload, 36 tackles, 18 runs for 150 metres) and Sebastian Kris (one try, one line break, one try assist, one line break assist, three tackle breaks, two offloads, nine runs for 91 metres) were among the best for Mounties. Guler (36), Sam Duggan (33) and Jarrett Boland (31), topped the tackle count for Mounties. Hunt (178m), Guler (150m) and Taane Milne (139m) produced most metres gained.

Mounties have lost three matches in a row and have now fallen to fourth place on the ladder - after leading the competition for much of the season. It is no coincidence that those losses have come following the departure of hooker Craig Garvey from the Raiders and Mounties. But Mounties are also suffering because of the loss of a number of Raiders players to injury and suspension - meaning a number of key players for Mounties have been on NRL duty. Mounties are level on 26 competition points with three other clubs - the third placed Newtown Jets, the Canterbury Bulldogs and St George Illawarra Dragons.

If Mounties are to guarantee a top four finish, they'll need to win the final two matches of the regular season - against the 11th placed Wentworthville Magpies and second placed St George Illawarra Dragons at Canberra Stadium.

Mounties have an 11 and nine record so far this season, while the Magpies are eight and 12. The Magpies have a WLLWW record in their past five matches, winning 36-30 to the North Sydney Bears in their last outing. Mounties have a WWLLL form line. Mounties defeated Wentworthville 34-24 at Aubrey Keech Reserve in Round 11 earlier this year.

Mounties have a clearly better attacking and defensive record than Wentworthville in 2018. Mounties have averaged 25 points scored per match, compared with 20 for the Magpies. In defence, Mounties have conceded around an average 21 points per match, the Magpies 27. Mounties have a positive points differential of 91, while the Magpies sit on -145.

Team changes: For Mounties, Ed Murphy returns at centre, replacing Matt Lyons - who put in an impressive performance last week, scoring a try on debut. Sam Duggan moves to the starting hooker position, with Joel Luani dropping to the bench. Mitch Cahalane has been named at starting prop in place of Liam Knight, with Knight on the Raiders' reserves list. Makahesi Makatoa returns to the team in the second row, in place of Duggan. Corey Horsburgy comes in at lock, with Emre Guler named to make his debut for the Raiders. Josh Saunders Jones has been added to the bench, with Sonny Bristow dropping out of the top 17.

For Wentworthville, Abbas Miski moves from five eighth to fullback, while Dane Aukafolau moves back to the centres - with Bevan French and Josh Hoffman on the reserves list for the Parramatta Eels. Arana Taumata starts at five eighth. Stefano Utoikamanu replaces Oregon Kaufusi at right prop, while Haimona Hiroti comes into the second row. Former Raiders junior Daniel Dole replaces Raymond Stone at lock. Another former Raider, Eddie Aiono has been included on the bench. Former Mounties players, Magnus Stromquist and Yileen Gordon will also line up for Wentworthville.

Our tip: Mounties have again tinkered with their spine, and the inclusion of the experience Duggan at dummy half should assist the men in yellow and black. They will miss the work rate of Emre Guler in the forwards, but may well get Jack Murchie or Liam Knight back, if not required by the Raiders. The Magpies may also get some pretty handy players - like French and Hoffman back, if not required by the Eels. Mounties recent form line is not great, and they have struggled with disruptions to their line up. However, they could have won last week against the Magpies... if they'd kicked just one more conversion. We'll go with Mounties to break the losing streak in this one.

MATCH REPORT: Wentworthville Magpies extend Mounties' woes

The Wentworthville Magpies take their finals hopes into the final round of the regular season after overcoming a second-half fightback from Mounties to record a morale-boosting 22-16 win, played in blustery conditions at Ringrose Park.

The win was built off the back of some blistering first half plays from their late inclusion at fullback, Bevan French, who scored one scintillating 70-metre try and set up another with sheer pace, before a second-half double to rangy backrower Dane Aukafolau sealed the two competition points for the home side.

I know they are punishing Ravalawa but they may as well pick him, it's desperate times.

He must be kicking himself a bit that he already did a deal with the Dragons so early, he would have 4 or 5 first grade games by now.

A lot of people myself included would have liked to have seen the likes of Boyd, Paulo and Austin get limited game time over the past few weeks due to them moving on. So it is hard for me to get behind picking this bloke.

2017 NSW Premiership Round 24: Mounties preview

Image

It is the final round of the regular season, with Mounties meeting the St George Illawarra Dragons in both NSW Premiership and Jersey Flegg at Canberra Stadium this Saturday.

NSW Premiership: Mounties were again at the wrong end of the scoreboard in Round 23, losing 22-16 to the Wentworthville Magpies at Ringrose Park last Sunday afternoon. Wentworthville benefited from the late inclusion of speedy fullback Bevan French - who scored a 70 metre try and set up another - Josh Hoffman and Cameron King. The Magpies scored three tries to one in the first half, and went to the break leading 14-6.

Mounties made a comeback in the second stanza with tries to Tony Satini and Sitiveni Moceidreke - taking a 16-14 lead with just under 20 minutes remaining. However, it was the home team that finished the stronger, with a brace of tries to Wentworthville second rower Dane Aukafolau in the final 11 minutes.

Liam Knight (17 runs for 190 metres, 47 post contact metres, six tackle breaks, two offloads, 33 tackles, one sin bin), Tony Satini (two tries, 17 runs for 162 metres, 61 post contact metres, two line breaks, eight tackle breaks, two offloads, four tackles) and Corey Horsburgh (15 runs for 157 metres, 56 post contact metres, one tackle break, one offload, 27 tackles) were among the best for Mounties. Sam Duggan (39), Makahesi Makatoa (38) and Knight (33), topped the tackle count for Mounties. Knight (190m), Satini (162m) and Horsburgh (157m) produced most metres gained.

Mounties have now lost four matches in a row, and have fallen to sixth place on the ladder - after leading the competition for a good part of the season. They are guaranteed a place in the top eight and cannot finish any lower than sixth. They could possibly force their way into the top four, if the Bulldogs and Western Suburbs Magpies both lose - and the Mounties are able to beat the second placed Dragons. Mounties are two competition points adrift of the fourth placed Bulldogs and fifth placed Wests. Wests play the third placed Newtown Jets, so a loss for Wests is quite possible. The Bulldogs play the ninth placed Wentworthville Magpies, so that's less likely - but Wentworthville can still make the finals and must win to do it.

Mounties now have an 11 and 10 record this season, while the Dragons are 13 and eight. The Dragons have a WLWLW record in their past five matches, winning 15-14 over the Bulldogs in their last outing. Mounties have a WLLLL form line. The two teams played way back in Round 1 this season at Wollongong, and Mounties ran out narrow 22-20 winners.

Mounties have a better attacking record than St George Illawarra in 2018, averaging 25 points scored per match, compared with 22 for the Dragons. The Dragons have the advantage in defence. Mounties have conceded around an average 21 points per match, the Dragons 19. Mounties have a positive points differential of 85, while the Dragons sit on +66.

Team changes: For Mounties, Mitch Cahalane moves from the bench to starting prop, replacing Liam Knight who is on the reserves list for the Raiders. Josh Saunders Jones has been included on the bench. The line up is otherwise unchanged from last week. For the Dragons, Pio Sokobalavu replaces Fa’atui Uele at starting prop, with Uele dropping to the extended bench. Joshua Kerr comes into the interchange line up.

Our tip: The Dragons are coming off a bye, so they will be refreshed, and they do have the better recent form line. Mounties have suffered badly from disruptions to their line up in the past month - caused by the exit of Craig Garvey, and suspension and injuries for the Raiders. And the line up looks no stronger this week. I'd like to think Mounties can turn it around this week. But realistically, it will be difficult for Mounties to knock off the Dragons in this one. Dragons by six.

Jersey Flegg: Mounties produced a 20-0 victory over the Wests Tigers in their last start at Seiffert Oval in Round 22... but it probably was not the performance they were hoping for against the last placed team. Mounties sit in fourth place on the ladder, and can finish no lower. They could climb to third, if they were to win over the eighth placed Dragons this week... and the Panthers were to lose to the Sea Eagles. Both the Dragons and Sea Eagles will be desperate for a win, as their finals aspirations depend on it. However, if the results reflect form, a third placing for Mounties seems unlikely... and a meeting with the first placed Knights in Week 1 of the finals is the probable outcome.

Mounties have a 13 and six record so far this season, while the Dragons are seven and 11, with one draw. Mounties have won eight of their past nine matches, the only loss a comprehensive defeat at the hands of the Knights in Round 21. The Dragons are on a four game losing streak, losing 14-12 to the Manly Sea Eagles in their last start. When these two teams last met, in Round 1 of 2018, the Dragons ran out 20-12 winners at Wollongong.

The teams have a similar record in attack, averaging around 23 points per match. However, Mounties have the better defensive record, conceding an average of 20 points per match, compared with 24 for the Dragons. Mounties have a positive points differential of 58; the Dragons sit at -20.

For Mounties, Matt Lyons replaces Harley Smith Shields at fullback, with Smith Shields shifting to centre. Alan Tuigamala drops out of the squad. Matt Scott comes in at starting prop, with Elijah Hunt dropping back to the bench. Darby Medlyn has been named at lock, with Corey Horsburgh playing for the NSW Premiership team. Komiti Tuilagi is included on the interchange list. For the Dragons, Shaun Sauni-Esau replaces Matt Delbanco at centre. Juvilee Samiu has been named at prop, with Matthew Sheppard dropping out of the team. Jack Gordon and Matthew Nicholson have been added to the extended bench.

This match has a worrying feel about it, given two of the Dragons' four recent losses have been by just two points - and a win is required for the Red V to guarantee a finals place. The Dragons have some talented players in their line up, including the son of Wendell Sailor, Tristan, and the son of Rod Wishart, Tyran. But we'll stick with Mounties in a close one.

I meant pick him for Mounties. We may as well try and make the finals in that grade and get some of the on contract forwards an extra game.

The 20’s defensive effort against the Tigers was outstanding. The referee was disgraceful with penalty count 10-2 at half time. We had 12 for a period also and the tigers could not get through. Looking forward to finally watching all grades in the one place! Get out and support our younger side at 11!

Super try. Kick over the top by Mounties #4 Matthew Timoko which he gathers then kicks again to put Hudson Young over. Westacott converts.

Great barging try to Mounties #16. Nicki SOLOA TOOMATA Westacott converts.

Mounties 12 Dragons 10. 2 mins to go first half. We really have controlled the game. Poor start but apart from marching them down with a penalty which we they scored from we have been in control.

Raiders winger Semi VALEMEI just taken into touch before the line and that is half time.

Half time. Mounties 12 Dragons 10.

To be honest a much better standard than the game at Queanbeyan the other week.
