Belconnen United Sharks to send Canberra Raiders Cup 'please explain'

The Belconnen Sharks will send the league a "please explain" about why they were controversially denied a chance to level the scores in the Belconnen derby.

"I'm going to cut some vision of [the strip] and a couple of other things I'm not happy about," Sharks coach Scott Logan said. “Internally it's not something where we're sitting down and pointing the finger at the referees - we had opportunities to score in other places - but we're more concerned about a few goals that we set for ourselves that we improved out of sight this week.

West Belconnen Warriors 18 (Joe Roberts, Ryley Thomas, Harrison Whatman tries; Matthew Campbell 3 goals) defeated Belconnen Sharks 16 (Sonny Tupuola, James Butz, Jordan Mecham-Crane tries; Andrew McDonald 2 goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Mohawked Bushranger sends Tuggeranong back to the top of the tree

Jamal Nchouki today scored a hat-trick in the 46-22 win over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Greenway on Sunday, as the home side turned a close game on its head in the final 15 minutes.

"[Nchouki]'s a local junior so we got him back last year to play for the club and he did his knee halfway through, which was disappointing for him and he's been slowly getting more and more minutes," Coach Justin Giteau said.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers 46 (Jamal Nchouki 3, Michael Brophy, Matthew Gruber, Daniel Hickson, Joshua Mitchell, Blake Murray, Francis Toetu tries; Mitchell 2, Livinai Tuicakau 2, Michael Picker goals) defeated Queanbeyan Kangaroos 22 (Sekope Meke 2, Steven Dunn, Tyrone Henderson tries; Brent Crisp 3 goals).

Woden Valley Rams 48 (Michael Gilmour 3, Petelo Vaka-Vivili 2, Bradley Martin, Jeffrey Morgan, Daine Spencer, Lincoln Withers tries; Ron Leapai 3, Withers 3 goals) defeated Goulburn Bulldogs 22 (Patrick Cooke 2, Michael Dodson, Joshua Fattore tries; Christopher Hart 2, Fattore goals).

Yass Magpies 30 defeated Gungahlin Bulls 16.

There you go Scott Logan is coaching in the Canberra Raiders Cup! Tell me he's not commuting from Wollongong for that?

Legend bloke!
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 8 Wrap

The West Belconnen Warriors produced a narrow 18-16 win in the Round 8 Canberra Raiders Cup feature match on Saturday O’Connor. The Sharks have not won this season - in fact, they have been winless for more than a year - but put in a brave performance against their neighbouring club.

Belconnen United Sharks V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

Belconnen United performed strongly in the opening exchanges, but it was West Belconnen that scored on their first real attacking opportunity - a try to hooker Joe Roberts in the 14th minute. The Sharks hung in and levelled in the 34th minute when Sonny Tupuola crashed over beside the posts - setting up an easy conversion. On the half time siren, West Belconnen Warriors set in motion an attacking raid that went almost the length of the field - with Ryley Thomas scoring a spectacular try. It gave the visitors a 12-6 lead at the break.

In the second half, new Sharks half Toby Westcott made a big impression, kicking ahead twice to set up a try to James Butz in the 53rd minute. Five minutes later, the Sharks were in again after Tino Sione set Jordan Mecham-Crane flying down the sideline, the four pointer giving the Sharks a 16-12 advantage. However, that did not last for long. Just four minutes later, Warriors lock Harry Whatman scored what would prove to the decisive try, with the conversion delivering the final 18-16 score line.

Warriors coach Troy Thompson was unhappy with his team’s attack, in particular, their completion rate.

"We haven't been playing and hitting our straps, but we've been winning some games," Thompson told The Canberra Times. "I don't know whether that's a good sign or a bad sign, but you'd rather be winning than losing."

In other matches, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers have held their spot at the top of the competition ladder - on points differential - with a 46-22 victory over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Greenway on Sunday. It was a close fought contest for much of the match, with the Kangaroos re-taking the lead, 22-20 with around 20 minutes remaining. However, the home team then piled on five tries, two of them to Jamal Nchouki - who ended the game with a hat trick.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Queanbeyan Kangaroos highlights

The Queanbeyan Blues and West Belconnen Warriors are level with the Bushrangers on 14 competition points after Round 8, in a congested top of the table. Meanwhile, victories for the Yass Magpies and Woden Valley Rams see them jostling with the Kangaroos for the top four.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 9 Preview

Image

Round 9 of the Canberra Raiders Cup will feature two blockbuster matches this Saturday - which should start to sort out the congestion at the top of the competition ladder.

Seiffert Oval will be the stage for a top of the table clash the clash between the Queanbeyan Blues and Tuggeranong Bushrangers. The Bushrangers are running first on points differential, with the Blues in second. Both the Blues and Bushies boast a 6 and 1 record this season. Tuggeranong has the best attack in the league, averaging an impressive 34 points scored per match. However, the Blues are not far behind, averaging 31. Tuggeranong has the second best defence, conceding 17 points per match, compared with 19 for the Blues.

Tuggeranong produced a very good 46-22 win over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos last weekend - in what was a tight tussle for the first 60 minutes. The Bushrangers, however, unleashed during final stages, piling on five tries. The Blues will be refreshed coming off the bye.

Bushrangers fullback Matt Gruber knows the Queanbeyan outfit will be a tough proposition. But he’s confident in his team’s ability to take the two competition points.

“I’m expecting the typical Blues, I mean they’re good across the park, so we’ve got to come with our best attitude and best performance,” Gruber said.

“We’re paying good footy and I think we deserve to be where we are. It’s just going to be a matter of going out there this weekend and proving it.”

Across town, the fourth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos host the third placed West Belconnen Warriors at Freebody Oval. The Warriors had a tough-fought,18-16 win over a much improved Belconnen United Sharks, while the Roos will want to bounce back in front of a home crowd. The Warriors have the best defence in the league, conceding just 16 points per match on average - while the Roos have the second best attack (31 points per match). However, the Warriors have two more wins on the board than the Roos - and West Belconnen just seem to be able to find a way to win, even if they’re playing poorly. The Kangaroos are always tough to beat at Freebody, but given the form lines, I’ll tip the Warriors in this contest.

In other matches, the Belconnen United Sharks meet the Woden Valley Rams at O’Connor. The Sharks are the only team that is still winless in 2018, but with the addition of Toby Westcott in the halves last week, they were much improved. The Rams have a 3 and 4 record this season - but an upset is possible if the Rams don’t bring their best game with them.

And at Walker Park, the Yass Magpies host the Goulburn Bulldogs. The Magpies are only outside the top four on points differential, and have the same 4 and 3 record as the Kangaroos. I expect the home team should be too strong for the Bulldogs in this one.

The Greenhouse will bring you scores for the Blues V Bushtangers via @CanberraCup on Twitter - and half and full time scores right here. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 9 Wrap

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers stand alone at the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder, after they defeated the Queanbeyan Blues, 42-8, at Seiffert Oval on Saturday afternoon - and the West Belconnen Warriors were thrashed by the Queanbeyan Kangaroos across town.

Queanbeyan Blues V Tuggeranong Bushrangers highlights

The Blues were without captain-coach Terry Campese after he was a late withdrawal from the team. Despite that, the Blues started strongly, with Zac Patch and David Barrie scoring tries within the first 10 minutes.

The Bushrangers hit back the 21st minute, a Michael Brophy try reducing the Blues’ lead to just two points. Just under 10 minutes later, the Bushrangers took the lead when hooker Josh Mitchell went over from dummy half. The visitors went to the break with a narrow 12-8 lead - but it was all the Bushrangers in the second half, which saw them pile on five unanswered tries.

Josh Mitchell again produced a four pointer from dummy half in the 49th minute and then set up a try for prop Brent Neil eight minutes later. And when Mick Picker made a break and put second rower Nathan Smith over the line in the 67th minute, the match was all sewn up at 32-8.

Blues centre Tyler Stevens was sin binned with five minutes left on the clock, and Bushies winger Livinai Tuicakau took advantage - scoring two tries in the final minutes, remarkably on opposite sides of the field.

At Freebody Oval, Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell came out of retirement to bolster his injury affected team - and led them to an unexpected 52-22 win over the third placed West Belconnen Warriors.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

The injury problems were so severe that the Kangaroos were forced to forfeit their Under 18s match, while Josh Ayers and Jake Kiely both turned out after suffering serious injuries last week.

“Ayersy was ruled out on Tuesday for 10 weeks, comes out and plays 80 minutes. Jake Kiely was ruled out for five weeks and probably his best performance of the year,” Gorrell told The Canberra Times.

The Kangaroos ran in nine tries, with centre Bryan Cronan, Jake Kiely and Nukurua Ngere all scoring doubles.

There were also some very big scores in the other matches. The Woden Valley Rams scored 12 tries in a 68-6 hammering of the Belconnen United Sharks at O’Connor, with Michael Gilmour, Kalani Going and Michael Geiger scoring doubles. It was a disappointing afternoon for Sharks coach Scott Logan after his team showed great promise in a two point defeat to the Warriors last week. And at Walker Park, lock Tom Warner scored a hat trick in a 50-24 defeat of the Goulburn Bulldogs.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 10 Preview

Image

Round 10 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the “southern derby”, with Woden Valley Rams hosting the competition leaders, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, this Saturday at Phillip. The Rams sit in sixth on the ladder, but are just two competition points adrift of the fourth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

Both combatants were big last start winners. The Bushies accounted for the Queanbeyan Blues 42-8 at Seiffert Oval, while the Rams defeated the Belconnen United Sharks 68-6 at O’Connor. But the Rams will be facing a very tough opponent this week. The Bushrangers have lost just one of their eight matches in 2018; the Rams have a 4 and 4 start to the season.

Tuggeranong has the best attack in the league, averaging an impressive 35 points scored per match. However, the Rams are not far behind, ranking second in attack and averaging 33 points per match. It is defence where the Bushies have the clear advantage, conceding less than 16 points per match on average, compared with 21 for the Rams.

The Bushies won 34-18 when the teams met in Round 1 this year at Greenway. It’s hard to go past a Bushrangers win in this match as well, but the Rams might fancy their chances at home. It should be a great contest.

At Walker Park, the fifth placed Yass Magpies will host the third placed Queanbeyan Blues in a clash that’s close to being the match of the round. The Magpies are just two competition points adrift of the Blues. The Blues have a 6 and 2 record this season, while the Magpies are 5 and 3. It should be a cracking match.

The Queanbeyan outfit has the better attacking record, averaging 28 points scored per match, compared with 24 points for the Magpies. However, Yass has produced slightly better defence, conceding 20 points per match on average, the Blues 22.

The Blues were on a five game winning streak, before falling to the Bushrangers last week. The Magpies have won their last three matches, posting 50 points against the Goulburn Bulldogs in their most recent appearance.

When the teams faced off in the Canberra Raiders Cup season opener this year, the Blues just came out on top, winning 23-18 in a controversial match. Five players were sent off after punches flew. It should again be a close match, but we’ll go with the home team in this one.

The Bar TV Sports feature match this week is between the seventh placed Goulburn Bulldogs and the last placed Belconnen United Sharks. The Sharks are still winless at the halfway point in the season, while the Bulldogs have posted just two wins. One of those wins was in Round 1 against the Sharks, 30-24, at O’Connor.

New Sharks half Toby Westcott made a big difference to Belconnen United when he debuted for the club two weeks ago against the Warriors. Ultimately, the Sharks lost by just two points in that game.

Westcott is hoping that if the Sharks can repeat that performance, their elusive first win of the season will not be too far away.

“It’s a really good club. The boys there have a really good attitude towards their training and they’re pretty professional in the way they do things,” Westcott said.

“We’ve been unlucky in the first part of the season, but I think if we’re able to get a bit of consistency coming into these last few rounds, we could get a few wins and knock a few top sides off.”

“A couple of weeks ago against Westies we put in a really good performance and if we do the same thing this weekend, we’ll go a long way [towards winning].”

“We were all working together, our chat was a lot better and we were completing sets... 85 per cent in the first half, which I don’t think we’ve done for a long time. We were just holding the ball and it worked for us.”

In the remaining match this round, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos are at home to the Gungahlin Bulls. The Roos are in fourth place, with five wins to their name. The Bulls have won just once. The Roos were 52-22 winners last week over fellow top four side, the West Belconnen Warriors, despite facing an injury crisis. The Roos were narrow 34-30 winners over the Bulls in Round 1 this year - but the Kangaroos can be expected to be far too strong for the Bulls this Saturday.

The Greenhouse will bring you scores for the Bulldogs V Sharks clash via @CanberraCup on Twitter - and half and full time scores right here. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

Toby Westcott hopes Canberra Raiders move kick starts NRL career

He moved to Canberra to kick start his NRL career, and Belconnen Sharks halfback Toby Westcott hopes he can help his new team knock off the Canberra Raiders Cup top sides in the process. Westcott joined the Raiders under-20s about five weeks ago, having previously been in the Penrith Panthers junior system before that.

He originally hails from Orange - the home town of current Raiders fullback Jack Wighton - but moved to the ACT and was allocated to the last-placed Sharks.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Morgan's miracle Hail Mary rams Woden home

"Oh, what the ..." But Ash Barnes didn't get the chance to finish the sentence. Instead the Woden Valley Rams coach was too busy watching lock Jeff Morgan's kick. A kick made by the self-confessed banned kicker as the clock ran out. Maybe Morgan's kicking status should change, as this one bounced perfectly for flying Rams winger Jessie Taws to score in the corner.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 10 Wrap

The Woden Valley Rams upset the competition leaders, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, at Phillip on Saturday - and with wins for the Magpies and Kangaroos, the weekend’s results have thrown the race for top four positions in the Canberra Raiders Cup wide open.

The Bushrangers remain in first place, on points differential, but are now level on 16 competition points with the West Belconnen Warriors - courtesy of a bye for the Belconnen outfit. Three teams are just two competition points adrift of the leaders - the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, Queanbeyan Blues and Yass Magpies, with the Roos now overtaking the Blues and moving into third place. The Rams’ upset win over the Bushies sees them still in sixth, but just two competition points away from third.

At Phillip, the Bushrangers opened the scoring with tries to second rower Nathan Smith and winger Livinai Tuicakau. A four pointer for Rams centre Cleveland McGhie reduced the deficit to four points - and the Bushrangers went to the half time break leading 10-6.

Woden Valley Rams V Tuggeranong Bushrangers highlights

Tries to Woden forward Jeff Morgan and half Sean Maloney gave the Rams a 16-12 lead with just under a quarter of an hour remaining. But then the match took some surprising turns.

First, it seemed crafty Tuggeranong hooker Josh Mitchell had saved the match for the Bushies when he crossed the white stripe, the visitors taking a two point lead.

However, that was not to be the end of the story. A remarkable, last minute kick from Jeff Morgan to the corner saw Woden winger Jessie Taws gather the ball and score a match winner... producing a stunning 20-18 win for the Rams.

"I'm not allowed to kick, I don't have my kicking licence. I just saw that one on the fly and thought I'd go with it. Nothing else to lose," Morgan told The Canberra Times after the match.

At Goulburn, the Bulldogs inflicted a 20-12 defeat on the Belconnen United Sharks - a team that has not tasted victory in over a year. The home team opened strongly, the Bulldogs scoring in the second minute through half Josh Fattore - and again in the 12th minute, when five eighth Zach Hart made a good individual break. The Sharks fought back with a try to Channon McAskill in the 25th minute - before a penalty goal to Bulldogs centre Chris Hart produced the half time scoreline of 12-6.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Belconnen United Sharks highlights

Conditions at Goulburn worsened in the second half, with the rain tumbling down and the temperature plummeting to 4C - and an apparent -4C with the wind chill. Lock Tyson Greenwood scored a simple try six minutes after the break, extending Goulburn’s lead to 18-6. The Sharks answered in the 60th minute, with a four pointer to prop Sonny Tupuola. But 18-12 was as close as the Sharks would get, a penalty goal for Goulburn in the 70th minute producing the final result.

In other matches, the Magpies handed out a 14-10 defeat for the Queanbeyan Blues at Yass, while the Queanbeyan Kangaroos had a big 42-6 win over the Gungahlin Bulls at Freebody Oval.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 11 Preview

Image

Round 11 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a top four clash between the West Belconnen Warriors and the Queanbeyan Blues. The Warriors are placed second on the ladder, behind the Tuggeranong Bushrangers on points differential. The fourth placed Blues are just two competition points adrift of the Warriors.

The Warriors have a 6 and 2 record to start the season, while the Blues are 6 and 3. However, both teams have struggled in recent weeks. The Warriors have lost two of their past three matches, going down to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 52-22 in their last start. The Blues have lost their past two matches. They lost narrowly to the Yass Magpies, 14-10, last week, and were thrashed by the Bushrangers, 42-8, in Round 9.

The teams have similar attacking and defensive records. The Warriors average 27 points scored per match, the Blues 26, while both teams concede around 21 points per match. The Warriors won the match between the sides earlier this year, 40-0, with the Blues significantly affected by suspension. Captain-coach Terry Campese was one of the missing players that day - but that is not expected to be the case on Saturday.

Warriors lock Matt Kelly expects it will be a closely fought contest.

“It’s a really tight competition. Between the top five or so teams it could be anyone’s game. It’ll be interesting to find out in the next half of the season where teams go,” Kelly said.

“The Blues will give us a really tough game. They’re coming off a loss so they’ll be there to prove themselves. So are we. It should be a really good game and hopefully we can get the win.”

Queanbeyan Blues assistant coach Adan Lenihan says his team is looking to turn around the Round 2 loss to the Warriors.

“We didn’t play well that day. They were coming in fresh and they got us. They were more energetic than us, they were faster than us, they beat us to everything. We’re hoping this week we come with the same energy that we know they’re going to turn up with... and match them in that department,” Lenihan said.

“We’re trying to get our season back on track. We don’t really look at the ladder to be honest. But I know we’ve lost the last two, so obviously that hasn’t helped. Westies are coming off a loss and a bye, so it’s probably desperate for both sides.”

“They got us pretty easily in the first round, so we’re hoping to rectify that and get one back on them.”

At Freebody Oval, the third placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos will host the sixth placed Woden Valley Rams. The Roos have a 6 and 3 record so far in 2018, while the Rams are 5 and 4.

The Kangaroos have a LWLWW form line in their past five matches, recording recent losses to the Blues and the Bushrangers. But they have posted some big scores in their past two games against the Warriors and Bulls. The Rams have a LWWWW record in their past five, with a last gasp, two point win over the competition leaders, the Bushrangers, in their last start. Their other recent victories have been against the three teams at the foot of the ladder.

The Kangaroos have the better attack, averaging 34 points scored per match. The Rams are not far behind, averaging 32. However, the Rams have a better defensive record, conceding points 21 per match, compared with 25 for the Kangaroos. The Rams (+95) have a slightly better points differential than the Roos (88). The Rams had an upset win in Round 2 against the Roos at Phillip. This shapes as a great match, but I’m expecting the Kangaroos to be too strong for the Rams at home.

In the other matches, I expect the Yass Magpies will cause more pain for the winless Belconnen United Sharks at O’Connor, while the Goulburn Bulldogs will likely take the competition points against the Bulls at Gungahlin.

Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen Warriors keen to d'Feet MND

When asked to help d'Feet MND, the West Belconnen Warriors decided to put the boot in. It's a cause close to the club's heart after long-time member Michael Swan was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease late last year.

They'll use their Canberra Raiders Cup home game against the Queanbeyan Blues on Saturday to help raise money for the Walk to d'Feet MND, which takes place around Lake Burley Griffin on Sunday.

Tenacious Bulldog puts injuries behind him in Canberra Raiders Cup win

Three years ago Haydon Hodge played for the Canberra Raiders in the Auckland Nines before chronic knee injuries forced him to retire. But the Goulburn Bulldogs fullback looks to have finally put those injury woes behind him, playing a starring role in the 32-18 victory over the Gungahlin Bulls at Gungahlin on Saturday.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 11 Wrap

The Yass Magpies have moved into the top four four after Saturday’s Round 11 matches of the Canberra Raiders Cup - while the Queanbeyan Blues have been pushed into fifth, after being handed a 14-4 defeat by the West Belconnen Warriors.

The Blues scored the only try of a scrappy first half at Kippax, with a trademark long pass from Terry Campese putting George Stewart over in the corner in the 25th minute. The Queanbeyan outfit took a 4-0 lead to the half time break, but the home team gradually took control in the second half.

West Belconnen Warriors V Queanbeyan Blues highlights

In the 56th minute, Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai threw a magic around the back pass to winger Matt Campbell, with Tim Sloman taking an inside ball for a great four pointer - leveling the score line at 4-4. The Warriors took the lead for the first time in the 68th minute, when Joe Roberts swivelled himself across the try line from dummy half.

Queanbeyan’s Jake Stein was sent off with six minutes remaining - and in the 78th minute, Joe Roberts took advantage, again going over from dummy half. Half Lachlan Keeley converted, producing a good 14-4 victory for the Warriors - and a third loss in a row for the Blues.

The win leaves the Warriors level with the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at the head of the table on 18 competition points - but second on points differential.

The Yass Magpies had an expected 38-18 win over the winless Belconnen United Sharks, propelling them into third place on the ladder, overtaking the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Queanbeyan Blues.

Belconnen United Sharks V Yass Magpies highlights

It was a closely fought battle at Freebody Oval, where the Kangaroos drew the Woden Valley Rams 22-22. The Rams took a 22-16 lead at the 60 minute mark, after five eighth Sean Maloney stepped his way through the defence, to score under the posts. But a Brent Crisp bomb set up Jake Kiely‘s match leveller - and an exciting final three minutes as both teams attempted to break the deadlock. Both had attempts at field goal - but failed. The result saw the Roos drop to fourth on the competition table.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Woden Valley Rams highlights

At Gungahlin, the Goulburn Bulldogs had a 32-18 win over the Bulls, after leading 22-6 at half time. It keeps the Bulldogs hopes of a top four place alive - five competition points adrift of the fourth placed Roos. The finals are out of the question for the Bulls, but their coach David Howell took some solace from his team’s second half.

Gungahlin Bulls V Goulburn Bulldogs highlights

“They got a bit of an upper hand from then on for the first half and scored a few tries. Our first half lacked a little intensity. Second half I thought we definitely won, physically and on the scoreboard as well, just giving ourselves too much to chase down,” Howell told The Canberra Times.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 12 Preview

Image

Round 12 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the clash between the Yass Magpies and Woden Valley Rams at the home of the Magpies, Walker Park.

The Magpies climbed into third place on the ladder last week, after a 38-18 victory over the Belconnen United Sharks. Meanwhile, the sixth placed Rams stayed in touch with the top four, thanks to a 22-22 draw with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Freebody Oval. The Rams are just two competition points adrift of the fourth placed Kangaroos.

The Magpies have a 7 and 3 record to start the season, while the Rams are 5 and 4... plus one draw. Yass is on a five game winning streak, while Woden has a WWWWD record, undefeated in their past five. The Rams have the better attacking record this season, averaging 31 points scored per match, compared with 24 for the Blues. The Magpies, however have a slightly better defensive record. They concede an average 19 points per match, the Rams 21.

The Magpies won the Round 3 match between the sides earlier this year, by just a point, 19-18, with a field goal to Chris Rawlinson in the 56th minute that proved to be the decisive play.

2018 Round 3 - Woden Valley Rams V Yass Magpies highlights

Yass coach Jarrad Teka has been forced to make a comeback to the playing field, because the Magpies’ depth has recently been seriously tested. But he says he’s happy with how his team is travelling in some tough times.

“I was much more comfortable on the sideline in the coach’s box. The body certainly likes it a lot more there,” Teka joked.

“We’ve been very tested in our depth and to keep getting the results we have been is quite pleasing. It shows good character that we have in the club, with the boys we do have up there and everybody’s willing to do their job.

“We’ve had a lot of blokes playing out of position - and going well in any position we put them into, and obviously that helps us get the results.”

Teka is looking for an improvement on the performance his team produced in the narrow win over the Rams at Phillip earlier this year.

“We’ve got our sights on doing a better job against them, and I dare say it’d be the same for Woden. They have a lot of players back and they’re certainly looking like they’re hitting their straps too, so it should be an awesome game.”

“One loss could drop you right back [on the ladder], so we’re definitely keen to keep the momentum we’ve got going and keep turning up.”

Woden prop Tom Robertson says the young Rams will be looking to grind it out against the experienced Magpies outfit.

“Yass are an experienced team and they really earn their points. I think last time we played them, there was too much dropped ball from us and too many piggybacks,” Robertson said.

“This weekend it’ll just about doing our job, sticking to the team structure and hopefully we’ll be able to grind it out with them.”

In the other matches, expect the Tuggeranong Bushrangers (1st) to be too strong for the Goulburn Bulldogs (7th) at home; the Queanbeyan Blues (5th) to end their three game losing streak when they meet the winless Belconnen United Sharks (9th); and the West Belconnen Warriors (2nd) to account for the Gungahlin Bulls (8th) in a north Canberra derby.

The Greenhouse will bring you final scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter and right here. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.
