Canberra Raiders captain Jarrod Croker says Todd Carney doing OK with family illness

Canberra Raiders captain Jarrod Croker says Todd Carney's football is the furthest thing from his mind at present. The Goulburn Bulldogs have expressed interest in the 31-year-old playing for them in the Canberra Raiders Cup.

"I don't know where he's at with his footy, I'm not too concerned about his footy at the moment, just hoping he's all good and going OK."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan still the Canberra Raiders Cup benchmark

His Tuggeranong Bushrangers might have the top-of-the-table clash with the West Belconnen Warriors, but coach Justin Giteau still sees the two Queanbeyan sides as the benchmarks of the Canberra Raiders Cup.

"We'll probably know a bit more about how we're going after this week and the next few weeks," Giteau said. "We've still got to play the Blues and the Roos and I think we're all sort of playing behind those two teams still. I think they're still the benchmarks of the competition.

The Canberra Raiders Cup spectacle that never was

It was a top of the table clash between two unbeaten teams, but Tuggeranong Bushrangers coach Justin Giteau reckons "you would have been dirty if you paid the money to come out to it".

"I’m going to say it’s one of the worst games we’ve played. I thought last week was bad," Warriors coach Troy Thompson said. "You play the likes of the Roos and you start turning pill over like that and you’ll get flogged, they’ll put 40 or 60 on you.

West Belconnen Warriors 26 (Tries: J Graham, T Aroha-Tuinauvai, B Litster, M Campbell, R Fulivai; Goals: M Campbell 3) defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 18 (F Toetu, J Mitchell, N Vanisi; Goals: J Mitchell 3)

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 28 (Tries: N Grant, S Meke, N Ngere, B Crisp, L Ingram; Goals: B Crisp 4) defeated Yass Magpies 18 (Tries: J McGrath, A Swaffield, T Webb; Goals: J Toppin, A McDonald, S Davis)

Queanbeyan Blues 22 (Tries: F Fainifo, D Barrie, J Wheeler, T Stevens; Goals: T Campese 3) defeated Woden Valley Rams 18 (Tries: T Hodge, D Spencer, B Martin; Goals: R Leapai, J Morgan 2)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 5 Wrap

The West Belconnen Warriors are the only undefeated team in the Canberra Raiders Cup, after they defeated the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Greenway on Sunday. It was a top of the table clash, but was a scrappy affair, with errors abounding. The Warriors now stand alone at the top of the competition ladder, with the Blues, Bushrangers and Kangaroos rounding out the top four.

The Bushrangers had the better of the first half, with tries to Francis Toetu and Josh Mitchell giving the home team a 12-0 lead after 20 minutes. The Warriors fought back with a try just before half time to Jacob Graham, reducing the deficit to just six points at half time.

Momentum swung to the Warriors after the break, with tries to Tevita Aroha Tuinauvai in the 50th minute, and winger Bailey Litster just seven minutes later. But the West Belconnen outfit quickly sacrificed their 18-12 lead - after knocking on at the re-start. The Bushrangers' prop Noa Vanisi ran straight through the Warriors' line in the next set. It was all tied up, 18 all with 20 minutes remaining - but West Belconnen finished more strongly.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

Warriors winger Matt Campbell scored the try of the match in the 67th minute, after Tevita Aroha Tuinauvai intercepted the ball close to his own goal line. He powered away but quickly passed to Campbell, who ran much of the length of the field for a four pointer. A try to Ricky Fulivai in the corner in the 76th minute wrapped it up for Warriors - in what was a very scrappy match.

Warriors coach Troy Thompson was not happy with the win.

"I’m going to say it’s one of the worst games we’ve played. I thought last week was bad," Thompson told The Canberra Times. "You play the likes of the Roos and you start turning pill over like that and you’ll get flogged, they’ll put 40 or 60 on you.

In the other matches on Sunday, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos sprung out of the blocks quickly in their clash with the Yass Magpies at Walker Park. The Roos led 22-0 after just 25 minutes - and effectively had the match wrapped up at half time. The Magpies outpointed the visitors in the second half, but in the end the Queanbeyan outfit was too strong, winning 28-18.

The Queanbeyan Blues were pressed all the way by the Woden Valley Rams at Seiffert Oval. A Blues try in the final five minutes broke an 18 all deadlock, with the home team running out 22-18 winners. And at Gungahlin, the Bulls produced their first win of the season - a 26-16 victory over the Belconnen United Sharks. The Sharks are now the only team that is still to record a win.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 6 Preview

Image

This weekend the Canberra Raiders Cup teams will be strongly represented in Round 2 of the Country Championships, when the Monaro Colts Under 23s and Women's League Tag sides turn out at Harris Park, Wagga Wagga on Saturday.

The Under 23’s will face the Riverina Bulls, while the Womens' League Tag team will meet the Greater Sydney Region (GSR) Wests Tigers - after Monaro had a bye in Round 1.

The Under 23s team is coached by Woden Valley Rams coach, Ash Barnes and he's included four representatives from the West Belconnen Warriors - including the captain of the team, Ryan McQueen. There are also three players representing from the Goulburn Bulldogs, two each from the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, Gungahlin Bulls and the Rams, and one each from the Queanbeyan Blues and Yass Magpies. Just three Monaro players from outside the Canberra Raiders Cup have been able to force their way into the squad.

West Belconnen Warriors centre, Ryley Thomas expects it will be a tough competition, with other teams likely to aim up against Monaro, the current Country Championship title holders.

"We will definitely have a target on our back from last year," Thomas says. We went all the way through, obviously, and we took it out last year, so I'm sure Riverina this weekend will be out to prove a point. We beat them in the same game last year, so I'm looking forward to it."

"I think [Riverina is] a little bit stronger this year. They've got a pretty big forward pack that we've identified through a bit of video work this week. They've got some pretty big outside backs as well. Last year they had a fair few injuries, so they're definitely going to be a bit stronger this year."

There has been a lot of turnover in the Monaro team after the success of 2017 saw a number of players given opportunities elsewhere.

"We've probably lost eight or nine blokes from last year. A fair number of the experienced players have moved on, they're now too old or have been given higher honours, like NSW Cup and Queensland Cup," Thomas says.

The Monaro Colts have been also impacted by injury.

"We've probably lost half a dozen blokes to injury as well this year. But the blokes who have come in are definitely ready to prove a point," Thomas says.

Round 6 of the 2018 Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the clash between the Queanbeyan Blues and Queanbeyan Kangaroos on Saturday afternoon at Seiffert Oval - a replay of the 2017 Grand Final. Both teams are on eight competition points, with the Blues moving into second place after last week's results. The Kangaroos are placed fourth on points differential.

Last weekend, the Kangaroos had a very solid 28-18 victory over the Yass Magpies, after leading 22-0 after just 25 minutes. Meanwhile the Blues were pushed all the way by the Woden Valley Rams, only securing a 22-18 win with a try in the final five minutes. Both teams have had a stumble in the opening rounds, but have lifted in recent weeks.

The Blues now have now scored more points than any other team in the league - and average 27 points scored per match. However, with one fewer match played than the Blues, the Kangaroos have averaged 31 points scored per match. Both teams have conceded 98 points over the opening rounds - with the Blues having a better defensive record on average (20 points conceded per match for the Blues, 24 for the Roos). It should be a great contest between the two Queanbeyan powerhouses.

In the other match on Saturday, the third placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers meet the Belconnen United Sharks at O'Connor. The Sharks have shown some good signs in some of their matches this year, but they are now the only team that is without a win. I expect the Bushrangers will be too strong in this one.

On Sunday, the Woden Valley Rams host the Gungahlin Bulls at Phillip, while the Goulburn Bulldogs face off against the West Belconnen Warriors at Goulburn. Both matches start at 2:00pm, with the Raiders' clash with the Cronulla Sharks kicking off at 4:10pm. It would have been a good opportunity to stage one of these matches at Canberra Stadium, given there is no warm up game for the NRL clash this week.

The Warriors are the competition leaders - and have been winning, despite playing poorly in the past couple of weeks. The fifth placed Bulldogs are coming off a bye and they won't be easy beats for the visitors. Both teams are amongst the most affected by the disruption of the Country Championship - so this one could go either way. The Rams and the Bulls both have a 1 and 4 record to start the season, but the Rams should be too strong at home.

The Greenhouse will be at Seiffert this week to bring you progress scores for Blues V Kangaroos via @CanberraCup on Twitter. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag. We'll also aim to provide updates on the Monaro Colts during the course of the afternoon.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Kangaroos lock Troy Whiley looks to bury heartache

It's the first time they have met their cross-town rivals since they lost the grand final to them last season, but don't bring that up with Troy Whiley.

"Obviously both sides have changed a little bit but I’ll never forget it. You don’t forget losing a grand final. At the end of the day we’ve got to focus on this week and keep trying to build for the finals. You know what it’s like, every time we play the Blues it’s a tough and hard game, so just looking forward to it like normal.

Tyler Stevens hits form as Queanbeyan Blues sweat on Jake Wheeler

The Blues hung onto their place in the top two with a 38-22 win over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Seiffert Oval on Saturday. They did it without Wheeler, who limped off in the Blues' win over Woden Valley last week with a suspected ankle injury, but that does little to ease the concern of captain-coach Terry Campese.

"We could miss him for the rest of the season, that’s worst case, and best case is about six weeks I think, so it’s still a fair chunk of the year," Campese said.

QUEANBEYAN BLUES 38 (T Stevens 3, J Baker, J Stein, J Stuckey, A Taholo; T Campese 5 goals) defeated QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 22 (N Grant 2, B Crisp, E Raby tries; B Crisp 3 goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Woden Valley Rams trio back up for two wins in two days

Monaro and Woden coach Ash Barnes and gun players Cleve McGhie and Ron Leapai inspired the Rams to a 34-20 win over the Gungahlin Bulls in the Canberra Raiders Cup at Phillip Oval on Sunday.

"We had Cleve McGhie and Ronny Leapai both back up, those guys went really good [on Saturday] and again [on Sunday]," coach Ash Barnes said. "Cleve actually got named player's player, so to back up after a tough game, to them come out and get player's player is a credit to Cleve.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 6 Wrap

The West Belconnen Warriors remain on the top of the ladder after Round 6 of the Canberra Raiders Cup - maintaining their undefeated record, with a 26-12 victory over the Goulburn Bulldogs at Goulburn on Sunday. However the Queanbeyan Blues and Tuggeranong Bushrangers are still just two competition points adrift of the Warriors after both recorded victories on Saturday.

The Blues ran out 38-22 victors over the Kangaroos in the Queanbeyan derby at Seiffert Oval. The Roos were hoping to get some revenge for the 2017 Grand Final defeat at the hands of the Blues, but the home team looked comfortable for most of the match.

Star Kangaroos play maker, Brent Crisp scored the opening try of the match in the 5th minute, chasing his own kick ahead. But it was Blues captain-coach Terry Campese who dominated in the first half.

In the 15th minute, Campese made a great break down field and threw a trademark long pass to Josh Baker in open space - producing the first four pointer for the Blues. He followed that up with try assists for a Tyler Stevens try in the 20th minute and a Jake Stein try in the 30th minute.

Queanbeyan Blues V Queanbeyan Kangaroos highlights

The Kangaroos pegged back the Blues' lead with a try in the corner to Elliott Raby in the 34th minute, and the teams went to the break with the Blues leading 16-10.

The Kangaroos levelled the scores five minutes into the second half, though a try to Nick Grant. But two tries to Tyler Stevens a try to Josh Stuckey saw the Blues wrap up the match with 10 minutes remaining - the score blowing out to 32-16.

The Kangaroos scored a consolation try in the 76th minute, but that was matched by a sensational try to Aisea Taholo after the siren. Tyler Stevens finished with a hat trick and was named man of the match, but Campese was not far away in the man of the match stakes.

The Blues are starting to find the form that was expected at the start of the season, but Campese says the Warriors are the benchmark.

"Let's be honest, you've got to talk up other teams. You want to fly under the radar, that's what you want to do," Campese told The Canberra Times.

"They're just trying to shift all the pressure off themselves and put it onto us. Westies are still undefeated and they towelled us up by 40."

In the other match played on Saturday, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers were too strong for the Belconnen United Sharks, running out 40-10 victors. On Sunday, the Woden Valley Rams defeated the Gungahlin Bulls, 34-20, with Cleve McGhie and Ron Leapai backing up from the Monaro Colts win in Round 2 of the Country Championships in Wagga on Saturday afternoon.

The Colts, predominantly made up of players from the Canberra Raiders Cup, had an impressive 38-10 win over the Riverina Bulls. The Colts head to Goulburn next Saturday for a Country Championships semi final clash with Illawarra.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 7 Preview

Image

This weekend the Canberra Raiders Cup teams will again be strongly represented in the semi final of the Country Championships, when the Monaro Colts Under 23s meet the Illawarra South Coast Dragons in Goulburn on Saturday.

Monaro coach Ash Barnes has named an unchanged team from the one that defeated the Riverina Bulls, 38-10, in an impressive performance at Wagga Wagga last weekend. Monaro defeated Illawarra last year in the semi final, 26-18, before progressing to take out the Country Championship in a grand final match against Newcastle.

Newcastle's top tier clubs have changed affiliation from the Country Rugby League to the New South Wales Rugby League in 2018, with the intent of pitting their representative team against a Ron Massey Cup representative team. Newcastle has traditionally been one of the strongest teams in the Country Championship. But last week, the Newcastle team, comprising representatives from lower tier clubs in the Hunter, were easily accounted for by the North Coast.

The winner of the Monaro V Illawarra clash will meet either the North Coast or Northern Rivers - and would be warm favourites to take out the Championship.

All of the Canberra Raiders Cup matches in Round 7 will be played on Sunday, giving the Monaro representative players the opportunity to back up for their clubs. The round is headlined by the clash between the West Belconnen Warriors and Yass Magpies at Kippax. The Warriors are the only undefeated team in the competition after the first six rounds and alone at the top of the competition ladder - while the fifth placed Magpies have a 2 and 3 record.

Warriors coach Troy Thompson has been concerned about how his team has been playing in recent weeks - but no team has a better attacking or defensive record so far this year. While the Queanbeyan Blues have scored more points in aggregate, the Warriors have scored more points on average per match (32, compared with 18 for the Magpies). West Belconnen has also conceded fewer points than any team and are averaging just 16 points conceded per match (21 for the Magpies). That's premiership standard defence.

Last weekend, the Warriors had a solid 26-12 victory over the Goulburn Bulldogs. After going to the break with a 10-6 lead, two tries in the space of three minutes after half time saw West Belconnen take a grip on the game. The Magpies are coming off a bye in Round 6, after suffering a 28-18 loss to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Walker Park. The Magpies have a LWWLL record in their past five games, while the Warriors are on a five game winning streak.

The Warriors will be more affected by representative duty, with three players - backs Ryan McQueen, Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai and Ryley Thomas - turning out for Monaro. Yass has only one representative, Jacob McGrath - who has been named on the extended bench for the Colts. That will make it tougher for West Belconnen, but the form lines suggest the Warriors should continue on their winning ways.

In the other matches, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers host the Gunghalin Bulls at Greenway. The third placed Bushies have been one of the form teams of the competition, losing just one match this season. The Bulls have a 1 and 5 start to the season, their only victory coming over the last placed Sharks. Expect the Bushrangers to be too strong in this one.

The fourth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos meet the Belconnen United Sharks at Freebody Oval, Queanbeyan. Last weekend, the Roos suffered a 38-22 loss to the Blues in a replay of the 2017 Grand Final. However, I'm tipping they will have far too much strikepower for the winless Sharks.

Finally, the Queanbeyan Blues travel to Goulburn for a meeting with the Goulburn Bulldogs. The Blues are placed second on the ladder, having lost just one match - to the Warriors, while significantly affected by suspension. The Blues are starting to produce a good run of form, while the Bulldogs are on a three game losing streak. I'm expecting the Blues will take the competition points in this game.

The Greenhouse will be at Mudgee this week for the Raiders clash with the Dragons, but we will bring you final scores across the weekend via @CanberraCup on Twitter - and right here. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

The emerging Canberra Raiders Cup stars with the world at their feet

They are a group of players that fell off the radar of rugby league recruitment managers. But Ash Barnes thinks this rake of Monaro Colts have the world at their feet.

"We’ve got a lot of guys in here who are still looking to progress their careers in whatever fashion that may be," Barnes said. "From the guys that made Country last year from our squad we’ve had three that have been fortunate enough to have been picked up by NSW Cup or Queensland Cup sides.

If anyone was looking for a sign of just how tight this grand final-bound Monaro Colts outfit is, they found one in less than 20 seconds.

They lost prop Luke Skidmore on the opening play of the game and responded with one of their most dominant team performances to move one step closer to defending their Country Rugby League under 23 country championships title.

Yass Magpies ended West Belconnen Warriors' unbeaten start to the Canberra Raiders Cup after playing the final seven minutes a man down following the softest send off this season. Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 7 Wrap

The West Belconnen Warriors suffered their first defeat of the season in Round 7, a narrow 18-16 loss to the Yass Magpies at Kippax.

The Magpies started the match on fire, with tries to Jacob Toppin and Tom Webb giving the visitors a 12-0 lead at the 20 minute mark. However, West Belconnen fought back with a try to Dustin Litster in the 25th minute, before Harry Whatman levelled the match with a four pointer just before half time.

West Belconnen Warriors V Yass Magpies highlights

The Magpies reasserted control early in the second half through a try to Jai Smith, giving Yass an 18-12 lead. With 10 minutes remaining, Yass hooker and co-captain, Jacob Toppin was sent off for a late tackle - giving the Warriors an opportunity to come back into the match. West Belconnen's Mitch Shaw chased a Harry Brown grubber with four minutes remaining, and planted the ball over the line - reducing the Magpies' lead to just two. Sadly for the Warriors, the conversion attempt was waved away. It set up a frantic final couple of minutes, with West Belconnen's Tevita Aroha Tuinauvai crossing the line in the 80th minute... but the final pass was ruled forward and the Magpies held on.

In other matches, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, Queanbeyan Blues and Queanbeyan Kangaroos all produced big victories. As a result, the Bushrangers have taken over from West Belconnen at the top of the ladder, with the Blues moving into second place - on points differential - while the Kangaroos round out the top four.

PREVIEW: Country Championships Final

The Monaro Colts meet Northern Rivers in the grand final of the 2018 Country Championships at Kirkham Park, Camden this Saturday. Monaro coach Ash Barnes has named an unchanged starting team, following a dominant display against the Illawarra South Coast Dragons last Saturday.

Monaro - in a line up dominated by representatives from the Canberra Raiders Cup - defeated Illawarra 48-18, giving Monaro the chance to defend their Country Championships title.

Monaro half Derek Hay admits the extent of the victory was a surprising result, given the traditional strength of Illawarra.

“I think the Illawarra comp is probably renowned as one of the best comps in country New South Wales, so to win 48-18 probably surprised a few people. It definitely surprised me as well.”

“But if we play to our strengths and complete like we did at about 85 per cent, that’s what we can do. We’ll look to do the same this weekend hopefully.”

The Northern Rivers produced a huge 64-12 victory over the North Coast in Sawtell on the weekend to qualify for the final. But the southern regions have traditionally been the strongest in country NSW and Monaro will go into the final as raging hot favourites.

But Derek Hay is having none of that.

“I don’t think we see ourselves as the top side. It’s hard to compare ourselves with Northern Rivers at the moment, as they are in the northern pool, we haven’t seen a lot of them.”

“They’re going to be a strong side as you saw in the result on the weekend. Any side that wins 60-10 or whatever it was, they’re going to be a good side. We’ll put our best foot forward.”

Hay says the format of the Country Championships, which is now restricted to Under 23s players, is good for the development of players still aiming for higher things in the game.

“I think it gives a lot of good exposure to boys who don’t make NRL squads straight out of Under 20s. I think the Country Rugby League has done a great job in reducing it to Under 23s.”

“It’s obviously a great opportunity for a lot of boys. I think someone like Cleveland McGhie would walk straight into a NSW Cup or Queensland Cup side... or possibly an NRL squad. It’s obviously a great opportunity for some guys like that.”

There is a bye for all Canberra Raiders Cup clubs this weekend.

The Greenhouse will bring you live scores in the Country Championships Final via @CanberraCup on Twitter. And don't forget, thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to a watch a live stream of the final right here:

Monaro five get chance to tour Papua New Guinea

The Monaro Colts might have missed out on back-to-back NSW Country championship under-23 titles, but five of their players will get the chance to tour Papua New Guinea and stake their claims for higher honours.

Monaro captain Ryan McQueen, Cleveland McGhie, Ryley Thomas, Ron Leapai and Nukurua Ngere were picked for the NSW Country under-23 squad that will travel north in October.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 8 Preview

Image

Round 8 of the Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by the clash between the top of the table Tuggeranong Bushrangers and the fourth placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Greenway on Sunday afternoon.

Both teams are in very good recent form. The Bushrangers handed out a footballing lesson to the Gungahlin Bulls in their last outing, defeating the visiting Bulls 51-10... while the Kangaroos thrashed the Belconnen United Sharks by a similar margin, 50-12.

Tuggeranong has a 5 and 2 record so far this season, but the Kangaroos have just one less win than the Bushrangers. The Kangaroos have the second best attacking record in the competition, while the Bushies rank third. Both teams are averaging 32 points scored per match. The Bushrangers have a clear advantage in defence, however. They have the best defensive record in the Canberra Raiders Cup, conceding an average of 16 points per match, compared with 25 points per match conceded by the Roos. It should be a great contest, closely fought, but we’ll tip the home team.

In other matches, the winless Belconnen United Sharks host the second placed West Belconnen Warriors at O’Connor on Saturday - and it would be a massive upset should the Warriors not take home the two competition points. But Sharks forward Channon McAskill is still hoping for a good showing.

"We’ve had a bit of a slow start, but hopefully we can build on that and get a game going soon" McAskill said. "We’ve just try to control the ball and look after it and play for 80 minutes, not that 40 minutes game. Hopefully we can get out there and give Westies a good run."

On Sunday, the Gungahlin Bulls host the fifth placed Yass Magpies. The Magpies prevailed over the previously undefeated Warriors in their last match, 18-16, just holding onto their lead in the final stages, despite finishing the match a man short. They should be too strong for the Bulls, with Gungahlin having a 1 and 6 record this season. Meanwhile, the Woden Valley Rams will take on the Goulburn Bulldogs at Phillip. Both teams are 2 and 4 so far this season, but the Rams have a better record in both attack and defence. We’ll tip the home team in this one.

The Greenhouse will bring you scores across the weekend via @CanberraCup on Twitter - and right here. If you're at any game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Goulburn Bulldogs Michael Dodson comes out of retirement to play with son

Michael Dodson was happily retired for the fourth time of his career, but the opportunity to play with his son was too good to pass up - even at the age of 42. Dodson will again run out for the Bulldogs against the Woden Valley Rams at Phillip District on Sunday.

“I thought it was a good opportunity for him so I just said I’d do it, and he loved it,” he said. “To be honest I enjoyed it too, even at my age it’s good to have a run around.”
