Canberra Raiders Cup: Wedding bells chime for evergreen Dodson to shine

A wedding meant evergreen Michael Dodson was meant to only play about 15 minutes, but a couple of first-half injuries meant the 42-year-old played a starring role.

It was his introduction off the bench that seemed to spark Goulburn into life on their way to a 26-8 victory over Gungahlin Bulls at Canberra Stadium on Saturday.

West Belconnen Warriors 40 (R McQueen 2, B Loughhead 2, R Thomas, M Campbell, T Aroha-Tuinauvai tries; M Campbell 6 goals) defeated Queanbeyan Blues 0

Woden Valley Rams 38 (R Leapai 3, D Spencer 3, T Robertson, J Pheeney tries; M Geiger 3 goals) defeated Queanbeyan Kangaroos 16

Yass Magpies 22 (Scott Naughton, C Rawlinson, J Hall, B Davis tries; S Davis 2, J Toppin goals) defeated Belconnen United Sharks 18 (S Tuouola 2, J Mecham-Crane tries; A McDonald 3 goals)

Goulburn Bulldogs 26 ( J Fattore 2, C Hart, P Cooke, M Martin tries; C Hart 3 goals) defeated Gungahlin Bulls 8 (B Scholes, D Low tries)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 2 Wrap

It is definitely a new year for the Canberra Raiders Cup. In Round 2, the two Queanbeyan powerhouses, and 2017 Grand Finalists, the Blues and Kangaroos suffered defeats. Meanwhile the two teams that finished at the bottom of the ladder in 2017 again showed they'd be more competitive in 2018 - despite losing their matches.

At Canberra Stadium on Saturday night, the curtain raiser for the NRL clash between the Raiders and Eels saw the Goulburn Bulldogs run out 26-8 victors over the Gungahlin Bulls. The Bulls started well, with tries to Drury Low and Brad Scholes giving Gungahlin and 8-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Gungahlin Bulls highlights

With the match being played in a gale - it seemed the eight point lead had put the Bulls into the box seat. The Bulldogs had lost prop Connor Brebner and hooker Nick Whatman to injury. But then it turned, with veteran bench player, Mick Dodson making a difference.

With ten minutes remaining in the first half, Tim Crome set up a try for Bulldogs' winger Pat Cooke in the corner. Then just three minutes later, a horrible pass from dummy half saw Goulburn five eighth Josh Fattore gather the ball and make an incisive run to the try line. Goulburn's Matt Martin burrowed through in the 40th minute - the converted try giving the Bulldogs a 14-8 lead.

The second half saw no points scored until Josh Fattore bagged his second in the 59th minute. Chris Hart capped off the match in the 67th minute, converting his own try.

At Phillip, the Woden Valley Rams upset the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 38-16, after leading 18-10 at half time. Winger Daine Spencer and Ron Leapai both scored hat tricks for the home side.

At Seiffert Oval, a Blues side missing four players through suspension - Terry Campese, Jake Wheeler, Michael Cullen and Aisea Taholo - was thrashed, 40-0 by the West Belconnen Warriors at Seiffert Oval. Half Ryan McQueen and prop Bayley Loughhead both scored doubles.

And at Walker Park, a Magpies team missing Benny Warner, Mitch Edwards and Willie Peace through suspension still had enough to narrowly defeat the Belconnen United Sharks, 22-18 - after the Sharks had led 12-4 at half time.

Canberra Raiders Cup Round 2 Wrap

Hattricks to Ron Leapai and Daine Spencer saw the Woden Valley Rams claim a memorable win against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Phillip Oval.

Spencer opened the scoring as he latched onto a grubber from Adam Lucas, who was starting at halfback in place of Lincoln Withers. Spencer followed up with an acrobatic finish in the corner for his second try shortly afterwards.

Rowan Orcher hit back for the Kangaroos thanks to a Nicolas Grant pass but Leapai extended Woden’s lead before Spencer wrapped up his hattrick with a 60 meter try.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 3 Preview

Image

Round 3 of the 2018 Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a clash between the Woden Valley Rams and the Yass Magpies at Phillip on Sunday afternoon.

Last weekend, the Rams had an impressive 38-16 victory over last year's grand finalists, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, while the Magpies were last start winners over the Belconnen United Sharks, 22-18. Both teams are level on the competition ladder, in fourth and fifth position, with a 1 and 1 record so far this season.

Rams co-captain Steve Ferry says the win over the Kangaroos shows his team can be competitive in 2018.

"That was a bit of vision of what we can actually do. We put it together, I think. We trained hard in the off season and it just clicked in Round 2 against the Roos," Ferry said.

"It's really good to beat a side like that. They're competition favourites and to show that we can compete with them and beat them is even better."

He believes, however, that the Rams now need to show they can perform consistently.

"Just beating the Roos, that's a good thing, but if we're to drop a game this week coming or the following weeks, it means nothing. To beat one team is nothing."

"You have to be consistent. And that's why teams like the Roos and the Blues have been so good, the last few years. They're consistent and we need to build on that."

Ferry is wary of what this week's opponent, the Magpies, will bring to Phillip on Sunday.

"They're strong across the whole park. They've got a good forward pack and they've got strike through the edges," he said.

New Yass Magpies coach Jarrad Teka is also pleased his team produced their first win of the season, after going down to the Blues in a controversial season opener at Canberra Stadium.

The Magpies had to come from behind at half time, and Teka says the Sharks played with a lot of spirit.

"They were all over us at the start, and we had to dig our heels in, and come away with some good defensive efforts," he said.

The Yass mentor said the return of Scott Naughton from injury last week was a big bonus.

"The blokes have missed him around the camp, obviously with the influence he's had on the club the last couple of years. Having him back there was very good for us. It brought a calm head and a bit of direction that we really needed," he said.

Teka knows it will be no easy task to get a win over the improved Rams this weekend - even though it seems likely that Woden will again be without veteran Lincoln Withers (hamstring).

"They were really impressive on the weekend. They came back really well from their loss in Round 1 and we're going to really have to aim up and be good across the park if we're going to be a chance."

It should be a good, even clash, but we'll go with the home side in this one.

In other matches, the Belconnen United Sharks host the Queanbeyan Blues at O'Connor on Saturday. The Sharks have been much more competitive this year, losing narrowly in both of their opening matches. The Blues were thumped last week by the Warriors, 40-0, with four players, including Terry Campese on the sidelines, due to suspension. They will have Campese and Jake Wheeler back this week - so they'll be a tough proposition for the Sharks.

Also on Saturday, the Goulburn Bulldogs host the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Workers Arena. The teams have a share of the lead on the competition ladder, along with the Warriors - placed second and third on points diffential. But the Bulldogs are the only team wit a 2 and 0 record this year - with both the Bushies and Warriors having had early byes. It should be a very good contest - with Tuggeranong's Mick Picker returning to Goulburn in the opposition's colours.

In the remaining match, the West Belconnen Warriors are at home to the Gunghalin Bulls on Sunday. The Bulls are still winless and - while they're an improved outfit on 2017 - the Warriors may prove too strong at Kippax.

The Greenhouse will be at Central Coast Stadium and North Sydney Oval this weekend for the Raiders clash with the Rabbitohs and Mounties matches against the North Sydney Bears. But we will aim to bring you progress scores for Sharks V Blues and Rams V Magpies via @CanberraCup on Twitter. If you're at a game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

Canberra Raiders Cup R3 Preview

This week’s match of the round sees the Woden Valley Rams face the Yass Magpies, with both sides coming off wins in Round 2.

The Rams will be full of confidence after a big win over the competition favourites, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, but Rams Co-Captain, Steve Ferry, knows that the Rams can’t get carried away after just one win.

“Beating the ‘Roos is a good thing but if we’re to drop a game this week or the following week it means nothing. To beat one team is nothing, you need to be consistent,” Ferry said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Daine Spencer has healthy start to Woden Valley Rams in Canberra Raiders Cup

Two knee reconstructions, one shoulder reconstruction and osteitis pubis. It's no wonder Daine Spencer's goal for the Canberra Raiders Cup is to be healthy and finish the season. But Spencer followed his round one hat-trick in reserves with another treble in the Rams' 38-16 victory over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

"I shocked myself a bit there. I didn't expect to get over three times, let alone one," Spencer said. "I didn't train or run since July 2017. I did a heap of rehab through the Canberra Raiders, through their rehab staff.

Queanbeyan Blues band together for the Ahosivi brothers

Blues captain-coach Terry Campese was after an attitude adjustment and he got it as the Blues bounced back from a shock loss to thrash the Belconnen Sharks 56-6 at O'Connor Oval on Saturday. But more pleasing was the Blues banding together to pay tribute to a great supporter of the club in Te Paeru Te Ariki Taneao Kiritakau, the mother of the Ahosivi brothers, who passed away last week.

"Some of our great clubmen that have been here for many years, the four brothers, the Ahosivi brothers [Liuaki, Sione, Dylan and Dave], lost their mum on Monday," Campese said.

Troy Thompson wins and still days he expects better? Sounds like an upgrade to me.
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 3 Wrap

After Round 3 of the Canberra Raiders Cup, the West Belconnen Warriors and Tuggeranong Bushrangers remain the only teams that are still undefeated. Meanwhile, the Queanbeyan Blues flexed their muscles on Saturday - bouncing back from their Round 2 flogging in style - while the clash between the Yass Magpies and Woden Valley Rams on Sunday went down to the wire.

In the match of the round at Phillip, the Rams went down to the Magpies by just a point, 19-18. The Rams went to an early 6-0 lead, when Michael Gilmour put centre Keb Vaetoe into a gap. However, the Magpies struck back, with a double to hooker Jacob Toppin in the space just two minutes - giving the visitors a 12-6 advantage by the 20 minute mark... and at the half time break.

Woden Valley Rams V Yass Magpies highlights

The Rams levelled the scores in the 56th minute, with a Sean Maloney grubber hitting the post and Steve Ferry taking advantage of the rebound. But just four minutes later, Yass took advantage of a Woden dropped ball in the red zone... and Magpies co-captain Tommy Warner regathered and bulldozed his way to the line. Yass then extended their lead with a field goal to Chris Rawlinson in the 56th minute - and that would prove to be the decisive play.

The Rams reduced the gap to just one point, with a try to Tyson Hodge in the 72nd minute... but they could not score again, despite some frantic attack.

In the other match on Sunday, the West Belconnen Warriors ran out 36-26 winners over the Gungahlin Bulls - in a scrappy match that was marred by almost 30 penalties and four sin binnings. Despite his team's undefeated start to the season, Warriors coach Troy Thompson was not happy.

"I thought it was a pretty poor game from both teams I reckon. There was a lot of penalties in the game, I think there was 28 penalties," he told The Canberra Times.

"We started off really well in the first 20 and just fell away. Our completion rate was less than 40 per cent which is just not good enough."

West Belconnen Warriors V Gunghalin Bulls highlights

On Saturday, the Queanbeyan Blues smashed the Belconnen United Sharks, 56-6, with Jake Wheeler scoring four tries. Meanwhile, Mick Picker came away with a victory over his former club, when the Tuggeranong Bushrangers scored a 26-16 away win against the Goulburn Bulldogs.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 4 Preview

Image

Round 4 of the 2018 Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a clash between the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Goulburn Bulldogs at Freebody Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The fourth placed Bulldogs are coming off their first loss of the season last weekend, while the sixth placed Kangaroos will be refreshed after last week's bye.

The Bulldogs suffered a 10 point loss to the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at home on Saturday. It was all the Bushies in the first half, scoring three tries and taking a 16-0 lead to the break. Goulburn fought back with tries to Nicholas Cornish and veteran Mick Dodson in the final 20 minutes, but by then the match was safely in Tuggeranong's keeping.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos are one of the competition favourites, but were shocked by the Woden Valley Rams in their last outing - going down 38-16 at Phillip in Round 2. They have a 1 and 1 record to start the season, while the Bulldogs are 2 and 1.

Kangaroos second rower Troy Whiley says that last week's bye should help some team mates recover from bumps and bruises - but he would prefer to be playing as many games as possible at this stage of the season.

"The week off obviously helps us. A few boys are sore, recuperating and that. To be honest with you I think we need to play as much as we can at the moment. We obviously haven't gelled as a team yet. We'll be looking to have a good game against Goulburn," Whiley said.

"We can score points. It's just our defence, obviously the attitude. We've just got to keep turning up for each other. Twenty minutes into the second half [against the Rams] we could have still won that game... It's just attitude [in defence]," he said.

Whiley says the Kangaroos are not focused on what the Bulldogs will be doing - but are focused on their own performance.

"Obviously they're going to be strong, they're strong each year. Every side's strong. But we're just focused on ourselves, just trying to get our game right. Hopefully we can get away with the win."

Bulldogs hooker Nic Whatman says veteran Mick Dodson is no certainty to take the field this week, after Dodson made some unexpected appearances for Goulburn, with plenty of impact, in the first two rounds.

"He's 50-50 this week. He's been really good for all the young blokes there. He's obviously very experienced, so he's been really good supporting everyone. Hopefully, he's there this week, but we'll see how he goes," Whatman said.

Whatman says Goulburn will have to contain the Kangaroos forward pack if they are to secure an away victory.

"They have a top forward pack, they're a really physical team, so we'll have to start well and hold that middle third of the field well. They're always fairly strong."

In other matches, the ladder leading West Belconnen Warriors take on the Woden Valley Rams on Saturday at Kippax. The Warriors have had a 2 and 0 start to the season, beating the Gungahlin Bulls 36-26 last weekend. The young Rams are 1 and 2, producing a memorable win over the Kangaroos before suffering a 19-18 defeat by the Yass Magpies last weekend. It should be a good clash, but we'll go with the home team in this one.

Also on Saturday, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers travel to Yass for a meeting with the Magpies at Walker Park. The Bushrangers have a share of the competition lead with the Warriors... but are placed second on the ladder on points differential. Both teams have won two matches so far this season, but the fifth placed Magpies have also recorded one loss - to the Queanbeyan Blues, 23-18, in Round 1. It should be a very even contest.

In the remaining match, the Gungahlin Bulls host the Queanbeyan Blues on Sunday afternoon. The Blues bounced back in style last week, with a 56-6 demolition of the Belconnen United Sharks. The Bulls are a much more competitive outfit this year, but they're still to record a win. The Blues should be too strong in this one.

The Greenhouse will be in Townsville this weekend for the Raiders clash with the Cowboys. But we will bring you progress scores for Kangaroos V Bulldogs via @CanberraCup on Twitter. If you're at a game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Nervous time retired for Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell

He's felt the urge to pull the boots on and get back out there, but Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell is mostly loving life post retirement - especially how his body feels Sunday morning.

"I didn't think I did [miss it] until we started playing. Game day is a little bit tough. Mid-week training when it's cold not so much," he said. "I probably get a little bit more nervous not playing than I ever did playing. Everything's out of your control by game day and you just have to sit back and watch things unfold."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Aaron McInnes dusts off the boots for Queanbeyan Blues comeback

Aaron McInnes was supposed to have hung the boots up for good after last year's Canberra Raiders Cup grand final win.

"We had some guys pull out late from injury and stuff like that so we had to rustle up a few players. We had Aaron McInnes, he hasn’t even trained once this year, he had to jump in there just to fill a spot for us," Blues captain-coach Terry Campese said.

QUEANBEYAN BLUES 36 (Francis Fainifo 2, Jake Wheeler 2, Larry Manu, Cody Wynnik, Michael Cullen tries; Josh Baker 3, Zac Patch goals) bt GUNGAHLIN BULLS 16 (Bradley Wood, Dean Aylott, Nicholas Mead tries; Jake Scholes 2 goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 4 Wrap

After Round 4 of the Canberra Raiders Cup, the West Belconnen Warriors and Tuggeranong Bushrangers are on the top of the competition ladder, and are the only teams that are still undefeated. The two Queanbeyan powerhouses, however, are hot on their heels, after both recorded big victories on the weekend.

In the match of the round at Freebody Oval, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos found the form that most were expecting from one of the competition favourites, winning 44-12 over the Goulburn Bulldogs. The Roos started the match on fire, with tries to Nukurua Ngere and Rowan Orcher giving the home team a 12-0 lead before the match was five minutes old.

Orcher produced a hat trick in the first half. The first two were the result of intercepts, running 90 metres for the first and 60 metres for the second, in the 15th minute. He scored his third from close range in the shadows of half time - giving the Roos a 32-0 lead at the break.

The match was really all over by half time, but the Bulldogs showed more fight in the second half - with both teams posting 12 points. The Roos were hampered by the loss of star playmaker Brent Crisp just before half time, with a head knock, an injury to Troy Whiley, and the second half sin binning of Jeff Lima. Goulburn scored two tries, one to Jake Whittaker in the 49th minute and the other to forward Fabien Paletua Kiri right on full time.

Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell was pleased with the way his team bounced back from the loss to the Woden Valley Rams in Round 2 - and coped with injuries during the match.

"We lost Crispy and Troy Whiley in the first half, so the boys’ effort to defend their line and to come up with some big minutes, which most of the blokes hadn’t played before, was pretty pleasing," Gorrell told The Canberra Times.

In the other matches on Saturday, the West Belconnen Warriors accounted for the Woden Valley Rams at Kippax, 32-22, while the Tuggeranong Bushrangers beat the Yass Magpies at Walker Park, 20-14.

On Sunday, the Queanbeyan Blues and Gungahlin Bulls played in challenging conditions at Gungahlin Enclosed, with the match suspended in the 51st minute due to the threat of lightning strikes. The Blues ran out 36-16 victors - despite being so affected by injury, forward Aaron McInnes had to come out of retirement for the match.

The Blues went out to a 10-0 lead after 17 minutes, with tries to Larry Manu and Frankie Fainifo. The home side struck back soon after, with fullback Bradley Wood finding a hole in the Blues defensive line out wide. The Blues reasserted their control of the match soon after scoring two quick tries. The first saw half Cody Wynnick shrug off two Bulls defenders and fight his way to the try line in the 31st minute. The Bulls pegged back the Blues lead just before the break, when five eighth Drury Low kicked cross field for winger Dean Aylott, who scored in the corner.

The Blues led 20-10 at half time - and at the point when the match was suspended, 11 minutes into the second half. But soon after the resumption of play, the Blues scored two quick tries, giving the visitors a 20 point lead. A try to Bulls interchange player, Nicholas Mead, reduced the Blues lead to 30-16, with 10 minutes remaining. But that was all too late.

Next week's matches are played on Sunday afternoon, with the Canberra Raiders hosting the Gold Coast Titans on Saturday afternoon. The Bushrangers take on the Warriors at Greenway in a top of the table clash, while the Bulls take on the Sharks, the Blues host the Rams, and the Magpies face the Kangaroos.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 5 Preview

Image

Round 5 of the 2018 Canberra Raiders Cup is headlined by a top of the table clash between the Tuggeranong Bushrangers and West Belconnen Warriors at Greenway on Sunday afternoon.

The Warriors and Bushrangers are both undefeated and have a share of the competition lead, with three wins apiece. The Warriors are placed first on points differential, with the teams separated only by their attacking records. The Warriors have averaged 36 points scored per match, the Bushrangers 26.

The two teams have exactly the same defensive record, conceding just 16 points. The Bushrangers, however, have produced the most consistent defensive efforts. The Warriors held the Queanbeyan Blues scoreless in their first match of the season - but have conceded more than 20 points in their most recent matches against the Gungahlin Bulls and the Woden Valley Rams.

Last week the Bushrangers took the competition points home from Walker Park, defeating the Yass Magpies, 20-14. Tuggeranong centre David Faaeteete scored a double - lifting his tally for the season to three tries from three matches. However, he's giving the credit for that to his team mates.

"The boys put a lot of effort into the preseason and everyone's on the same page," Faaeteete said. "All the credit to the boys, the forwards especially. We're just lucky enough to get the tries."

He says the Bushrangers will be fully focused on their own performance this weekend when they meet the Warriors.

"Both teams are strong. We're not really fixed on Westies. We're more fixed on our own team and what we need to do. We've got heaps to work on, Faaeteete said.

The Warriors produced a 32-22 victory in their last outing against the Woden Valley Rams - and they will be looking to lift their defensive effort. There's no doubt Troy Thompson's men can score tries, but defence wins big matches - and the Bushrangers might just prove too strong on their home turf on Sunday.

In other matches, the third placed Queanbeyan Blues meet the seventh placed Woden Valley Rams at Seiffert Oval. The Blues have been struggling with suspension and injury, but have produced big wins against the Sharks and the Bulls in their past two games. The Rams have shown some good form, upsetting the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in Round 2 and losing by just one point to the Yass Magpies in Round 3. However, they lost last weekend to the Warriors, 32-22. I expect the Blues will win this one well, at home.

The Yass Magpies host the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Walker Park - in what should prove to be a very good clash. Both teams have two wins to their credit - but the fifth placed Magpies have recorded two losses, and the fourth place Roos just one. The Kangaroos clicked into top gear in their last outing, defeating the Goulburn Bulldogs 44-12 at Freebody - and showed the sort of form that everyone has been expecting from one of the competition favourites. Yass is coming off a loss to Tuggeranong - and I'm tipping the Roos will be too good for the home team on Sunday.

Finally, the Gungahlin Bulls meet the Belconnen United Sharks at Gungahlin. Both teams have shown signs they'll be more competitive this season, but both are yet to record a victory. The Sharks have the worst attacking record in the competition, averaging 16 points scored per match (20 for the Bulls). No team has conceded more points than the Bulls - but the Sharks have a worse defensive record on average, conceding 36 points per match, the Bulls 33. At home, the Bulls should post their first win of the season.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Todd Carney would need official approval to play for Goulburn Bulldogs

Todd Carney would need official approval to play in the Canberra Raiders Cup after the Goulburn Bulldogs confirmed there is genuine interest in signing the former NRL star. Carney has returned to Sydney to be close to his sick mother. The Newtown Jets have said they're not interested in his signature.

"If Todd's looking to get some football, whether that's short-term or long-term, we'd definitely be keen," Goulburn Bulldogs coach Adam Kyle said.
