Break has Kangaroo bouncing into Canberra Raiders Cup final

It's more than just a metal plate that's hidden beneath the padding on Josh Hitchins' right arm. There's a tale of finals woe as well. Safe to say, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos prop hopes this year's finals series goes a bit better...

"It's pretty even though this year. Any team can beat each other on their day. The Rams are coming good, Bushies are coming good too. It's just whoever shows up on the day," West Belconnen Warriors coach Troy Thompson said.

West Belconnen Warriors book Preliminary Final place

The West Belconnen Warriors have defeated the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 18-16 at Seears Workwear Oval to book their place in the Preliminary Final.

For the second week in a row, it was Ryley Thomas who delivered the knockout blow as the Warriors replicated last week’s scoreline against the same opponent.

History repeats as West Belconnen Warriors down Queanbeyan Kangaroos

Don't panic. Easier said than done, especially with your season on the line, but that's what West Belconnen coach Troy Thompson was hoping his players would do.

"It was a funny game, it was like last week, it was just close. They scored with 10 minutes to go so for us it was 'don't panic'," Thompson said. "We came back from 12-0 down last week and we don't panic, which has been good.

Woden Valley Rams edge closer to ending Canberra Raiders Cup drought

Rarely have the words "hey up the Rams" been belted out louder over the past 22 years. If Ash Barnes has his way, they'll only have to wait two weeks to better it again.

Barnes' Woden Valley Rams booked their place in the Canberra Raiders Cup grand final with a stirring 24-16 win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the major semi-final at Greenway Oval on Sunday.

WODEN VALLEY RAMS 24 (D Spencer, S Maloney, J Morgan, R Leapai tries; L Withers 4 goals) bt
TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 16 (D Faaeteete, L Tuicakau, M Picker tries; M Picker 2 goals)

Have to say, I love seeing some of the underdog teams getting up this year. I have really enjoyed seeing the Bushrangers and Rams whenever I get to their games. They have no resources, very limited in any case. But they've built from the ground up, while bringing some experienced heads.

Is it the top 4? Loser of 1 v 2 against winner of 3 v 4?
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 1 Wrap

The Woden Valley Rams have qualified for the 2018 Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final, after defeating the Tuggeranong Bushrangers 24-16 at Greenway on Sunday afternoon. The Rams have not made the finals since 2009 and have not won a premiership since 1996. However, they now have a chance of winning a third title, after their come from behind win over the minor premiers. The Rams are undefeated in their past 12 matches - and they will need to extend that streak to 13 if they are to do it.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Woden Valley Rams highlights

The Bushrangers dominated the first half of the grand final qualifier, going to a 16-0 lead at the 30 minute mark, courtesy of tries to David Faaeteete, Mick Picker and Livi Tuicakau. But the Rams put themselves back into the contest with three tries in the space of three minutes just before the break. In the 37th minute, fullback Dane Spencer made a brilliant individual run down the short side to grab a four pointer. And after Sean Maloney planted the ball over the line moments before the break, the Bushrangers' lead had been reduced to just four points.

The momentum shift continued for the Rams in the second half. In the 51st minute, lock Jeff Morgan crashed over, with Lincoln Withers' conversion giving Woden the lead for the first time in the match. And then in the 60th minute, prop Ron Leapai made a break, running like a back, to score - giving the Rams a 24-16 advantage. It would prove to be the last points of the match, despite Bushrangers second rower Atu Tupou spending time in the sin bin during the final 20 minutes.

The Bushrangers fought hard to get back into the match, with Livi Tuicakau getting across the line in the 74th minute - but it was correctly ruled a double movement.

Woden coach Ash Barnes was proud of how the club had built itself into a premiership contender.

"It was a sense of relief, it has been a long time coming for our club, and to do it with a team that the majority has come through our juniors and our under 18s, and most of the rest have been here for four, five, six years, it’s really pleasing to do it with such a great bunch that have worked really hard for it," Barnes told The Canberra Times.

Tuggeranong now face West Belconnen in the Preliminary Final next week, after the Warriors beat the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 18-16 on Saturday - for the second time in two weeks. The Kangaroos had been in contention for the minor premiership going into the final round of the regular season - but have been eliminated from the 2018 Cup in heart breaking fashion.

The match at Freebody Oval was played in rain, sleet and then sunshine. However the teams delivered an exciting contest, despite the conditions. The Kangaroos were first to score, with Josh Ayres crashing through to score in the 16th minute. The Warriors hit back with a Ryan McQueen try in the 29th minute, reducing the Kangaroos lead to two points. And then right on half time, West Belconnen took advantage of a Queanbeyan error, with Mitch Shaw bullocking his way over the line to score under the posts - and giving the Warriors a 10-6 lead at the break.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

The match see-sawed in the second half. The Kangaroos took back the lead in the 54th minute when Brent Crisp scored from dummy half, capitalising on a good run from Josh Ayres in the lead up. Warriors centre Matt Campbell gave his team a 14-12 advantage in the 61st minute, scoring off a terrific Ryan McQueen pass.

With 10 minutes remaining, the Queanbeyan outfit reasserted control, with forward Nuku Ngere getting over the line after a powerful run. The home team had again hit the front, 16-14. But the Warriors would not be denied the match - hitting back with a stunning try to centre Ryley Thomas in the 74th minute. Lachlan Keeley could not convert from out wide, but the Thomas try would prove decisive.

The Preliminary Final between the Bushrangers and the Warriors will be played next Sunday at Seiffert Oval. The Bushies have previously made the Grand Final just once and are still in search of a maiden premiership, after 15 years in the competition. The Warriors are aiming to add to their 11 titles, last winning in 2016. Remarkably, the elimination of the Kangaroos means that 2018 will be the first year since 2009 that there will be no Queanbeyan team in the Grand Final.

Belconnen United Sharks sign former Canberra Raiders hooker Glen Buttriss

After three years on the road, former Canberra Raiders hooker Glen Buttriss is settling down. He's signed with the Belconnen United Sharks for next year's Canberra Raiders Cup, where coach and former Green Machine teammate Scott Logan sees him slotting into the halves.

The 33-year-old played 119 NRL games for the Raiders, before he spent two seasons playing for the Mounties in the NSW Cup and then was playing coach of the Cootamundra Bulldogs in his home town this year.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 2

Image

The Woden Valley Rams have qualified for the Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final... and this weekend's action will determine which team will meet them in the decider. The Tuggeranong Bushrangers face the West Belconnen Warriors in the Preliminary Final at Seiffert Oval this Sunday afternoon, with the loser eliminated and the winner getting a shot at the premiership title.

The Bushrangers finished the season as minor premiers - and for much of the first half of the major semi final, it looked like they were on track for a Grand Final appearance. But the Rams came from behind to secure an impressive 24-16 victory. The West Belconnen Warriors beat the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in the minor semi final on Saturday to stay in the premiership race. They had to beat the Kangaroos two weeks in a row to do so, remarkably producing an identical 18-16 scoreline in both matches.

The Warriors were 26-18 victors when the two teams met in Round 5 this year at Greenway, in what was then a top of the table clash. That match was all tied up 18-18, with 20 minutes remaining, but it was the Warriors that finished more strongly. In Round 15, the Bushrangers turned the tables at Kippax, posting a dominant 36-16 win.

2018 Round 5 Tuggeranong Bushrangers V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

2018 Round 14 West Belconnen Warriors V Tuggeranong Bushrangers highlights

The Bushrangers had a better attacking and defensive record than the Warriors in the regular season. They averaged 30 points scored per match, ranking third in the competiton in attack, compared with 25 points per match for the Warriors. Tuggeranong had the best defence in the Cup, conceding just 17 points per match. The Warriors were not far off that benchmark, conceding under 19 points per match.

The recent form of the Warriors, however, has been better than the Bushrangers. The Warriors are on a three game winning streak, and have lost just one of their past five matches. The Tuggeranong outfit has a WLLWL record, their stumbles towards the end of the season almost costing them a first placed finish.

Veteran Tuggeranong winger Michael Brophy says they'll need to stop Warriors fullback and captain Ryan McQueen if the Bushies are to win.

“Westies have some really good players with Ryan McQueen in some good form and Ryley Thomas scored the two winning tries in their last two games,” Brophy said.

“I reckon McQueen is their go to man so if we shut him down we will go a long way to winning this weekend.”

The Bushies have previously made the Grand Final just once and are still in search of a maiden premiership, after 15 years in the competition. The Warriors are aiming to add to their 11 titles, last winning in 2016. It should be a great contest, but the team with momentum, the Warriors, might just get an upset in a close one.

We'll bring you scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter as we have them to hand. If you're at either game, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.

And thanks to the Bar TV Sports YouTube channel, you'll be able to a watch live stream of both matches right here:

In lower grades the Woden Valley Rams will be aiming to make the Grand Final in all three mens' grades... and if they do it, what a day it'll be for a club that has often struggled to compete with the powerhouse teams. The Queanbeyan Blues have already qualified for the Grand Final in reserves and Under 18s.

Calwell kids behind Tuggeranong Bushrangers Canberra Raiders Cup bid

It's the Calwell household that's helping drive Tuggeranong's premiership push. Four Kiwis and a Fijian have found themselves living together in Canberra, brought together to play rugby league for the Bushrangers. Francis David Toetu, David Faaeteete, Noa Vanisi and Phaebian Antonio, are the Kiwis, while Fijian winger Livinai Tuicakau has joined them in the household for the season.

"We all played for different clubs back in Auckland, but we played for a regional team together, which was Counties Manukau," Toetu said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Finals Week 2 Wrap

While Queanbeyan is unkindly referred to as "Struggletown" by some Canberrans... when it comes to rugby league clubs, Queanbeyan's teams are certainly no strugglers. They have been the powerhouses of the competition, with at least one of the Blues or Kangaroos featuring in the Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final for the past eight years. But not in 2018.

The 2018 Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final will be a battle between the Woden Valley Rams and the Tuggeranong Bushrangers. Both teams might have been considered strugglers in recent years. The Rams have not won a premiership since 1996, 22 years ago - and are in search of just their third premiership. The Bushies have previously made the Grand Final just once - in 1997- and are still in search of a maiden premiership, after 15 years in the competition.

But the south Canberra clubs are strugglers no longer. It is a credit to both clubs.

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers qualified for the decider at Seiffert Oval on Sunday afternoon, defeating the West Belconnen Warriors, 22-0. As the scoreline indicates, the Bushies dominated much of the match.

The first half was very tight, with the first points only coming after 24 minutes - a penalty goal to Bushrangers hooker Josh Mitchell after a high tackle from the Warriors. The first try came just three minutes before half time, after the football resembled a pinball... ending in the hands of forward Atu Tupou, who planted it for a four pointer. The Tuggeranong outfit went to the break with an 8-0 lead - and at that stage, the Warriors were still well in the contest.

However, the Bushrangers remained in full control in the second stanza. In the 46th minute, the Bushrangers elected to take another shot at penalty goal, extending their lead to 10-0. The try of the match came in the 59th minute. Half Mick Picker put in a high kick to the corner - and Livi Tuicakau charged down the sideline at pace, plucking the ball out of the air, and planting it for a stunning four pointer. And with 10 minutes remaining, Josh Mitchell sewed up the match when he dived over the line from dummy half.

While the Preliminary Final was a little dour, the Grand Final should be a great contest - a south Canberra derby, between the the teams that finished first and second on the ladder. Tuggeranong was the best defensive team this season, but Woden conceded just five more points than the Bushies. The Rams ranked second in attack, the Bushrangers third. In Week 1 of the finals, the Rams defeated the Bushrangers 24-16, after coming from behind to qualify first for the Grand Final. Seiffert Oval, 3:30pm next Sunday. Can't wait!

Tuggeranong Bushrangers on verge of club's first Canberra Raiders Cup grand final win

Tuggeranong Bushrangers supporters filled the change rooms to celebrate the club's first grand final berth in 11 years, but coach Justin Giteau says the job's not finished until they win a maiden title.

"Sometimes it takes time. I've never coached in a grand final before, but I don't want to be there and make up the numbers," Giteau said. "The goal now that we're in there is to win it. It is [a massive moment for the club], you can see that with all the supporters in here singing the song. We haven't had that all year.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Grand Final

The Canberra Raiders Cup reaches its climax on Sunday, when the Woden Valley Rams meet the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in the Grand Final at Seiffert Oval.

The Rams have not won a premiership since 1996, 22 years ago - and are in search of just their third premiership. The Bushies have previously made the Grand Final just once - in 1997- and are still in search of a maiden premiership, after 15 years in the competition.

The Bushrangers finished the season as minor premiers but it was the second placed Rams that qualified first for the decider, defeating the Bushrangers 24-16 in the major semi final at Greenway. The Rams came from behind to do it, after they trailed the Bushies 16-0 after 30 minutes.

2018 Major Semi Final - Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Woden Valley Rams

Tuggeranong produced a dominant display in the Preliminary Final last weekend against the West Belconnen Warriors, earning the right to a rematch with the Rams in the Grand Final with a 22-0 win.

2018 Preliminary Final - Tuggeranong Bushrangers V West Belconnen Warriors

The Bushrangers produced a 12 and four record in the regular season, with the Rams posting just one fewer win, four losses and one draw. The Rams had a better attacking record than the Bushrangers, averaging 32 points scored per match. However the Tuggeranong outfit was not far behind, averaging 30 points per match. Tuggeranong's defensive record was slightly better than the Rams, averaging 17 points conceded per match, compared with 18 for the Rams. The Rams finished the season with a slightly better points differential.

In the regular season matches between the two clubs, the Bushrangers had a 34-18 victory over the Rams in Round 1 at Greenway... while the Rams turned the tables in Round 10, with a narrow two point victory over the Bushies at Phillip.

2018 Round 10 - Woden Valley Rams V Tuggeranong Bushrangers

The Bushrangers led the competition for much of the season, but have shown some mixed form in the lead up to the Grand Final. Tuggeranong has a LLWLW record in their past five matches, their stumbles towards the end of the season against the Bulls and the Kangaroos almost costing them their first placed finish. However, their form in the Preliminary Final was very impressive - producing the sort of football that wins grand finals. And they have some assured leaders in hooker Josh Mitchell, and half Mick Picker, who know what is needed in big matches.

The Rams are undefeated in their past 12 matches - though that run includes a draw against the Kangaroos in Round 11. The confidence of the Rams will be sky high and it will be no mean feat if they can extend that run to 13, to take the premiership. They are a young, exciting team, with an old head in Lincoln Withers to help guide them around. They also boast one of the McIntyre Medallists, Michael Gilmour, a very damaging forward in attack.

Tuggeranong captain Josh Mitchell is excited for his club and supporters on making the decider.

“The club is ecstatic,” Mitchell said. “Everyone has jumped on board and everyone is turning up to training to watch us. Winning a premiership would mean everything to the club. We’re not financially strong and I think that’s what’s great about having both South side teams in the Grand Final.”

Meanwhile, Woden captain Jeff Morgan just hopes his team can extend their unbeaten run.

“It’s great momentum having been undefeated 12 games in a row and hopefully we can make it 13,” Morgan said. “If we do win on the weekend it would mean a lot, not just to me but everyone at the club. It’s been over 20 years since we’ve won it.

This is a difficult match to tip. It is a contrast in styles, with the Rams more expansive in attack and the Bushrangers happier to get in the grind. I tipped the Rams two weeks ago... and I'll stick with them.

These teams don't have the financial advantages of some clubs in the Canberra Raiders Cup, so it is a credit to both teams on making it to the Grand Final. Whichever team takes the spoils, it is going to be one hell of a party in south Canberra on Sunday night.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Lincoln Withers looking for home fairy-tale ending for Woden Valley Rams

Lincoln Withers, the 37 year old former Canberra Raider, returned to his junior club this season as he starts to draw the curtain on his career of 154 NRL games and another 113 in the Super League.

"I haven't really thought about it. I'd love to keep running around. I'm getting a little bit older now ... but if the body feels good and I've got the time - I've got five kids and it's probably their time to play some sport - you never know," Withers said. "Ideally this would probably be my last, but you never say never and it's a long time retired so we'll see what happens."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Tupou playing for love of 'little one'

RIL. Those three sad letters will again be emblazoned across Atu Tupou's head band. Once again he'll play in his nephew's honour. If the Tuggeranong Bushranger scores a try against the Woden Valley Rams in the Canberra Raiders Cup grand final at Seiffert Oval on Sunday, he'll point to the sky to the "little one" resting in love.

The death of his nephew hit Tupou hard, especially when he found out his brother Taniela and partner Katareena were going to name their son after him.

MATCH REPORT: Goulburn claim 2018 Katrina Fanning Shield

The Goulburn Stockmen have defeated minor premiers the Yass Magpies 20-8 at Seiffert Oval on Sunday afternoon to claim their first Katrina Fanning Shield.

After finishing second last season, Goulburn were out for redemption and they certainly achieved that by defeating the highflying Magpies in a physical contest.

Yass led going into halftime, but the Stockmen came out hard in the second half and once the Magpies were reduced to 12 players Goulburn ran away with the match.

Goulburn Stockmen 20 (Tries: Hazelton, Marshall, Ottaway, Parry Goals: Kelly 2/4) def Yass Magpies 8 (Tries: Afele 2 Goals: Wright 0/2)

Woden Valley Rams claim first premiership in 22 years

Lincoln Withers has led his junior club the Woden Valley Rams to their first premiership in 22 years, snapping a late field goal to defeat the Tuggeranong Bushrangers 31-30 in a grand final for the ages at Seiffert Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams were clinical in racing to a 30-0 lead before the Bushrangers mounted one of the great comebacks to level the scores late in the match.

Tuggeranong scored 30 points in 18 minutes to level the scores before Withers kicked a field goal with four minutes remaining to lead his junior club to a premiership in his first season of first grade at the club.

Woden Valley Rams 31 (Tries: Leapai, Geiger, Lucas, Hodge, Gilmour Goals: Withers 5/5 Field Goals: Withers 1) def Tuggeranong Bushrangers 30 (Tries: Dragisic 2, Nchouki 2, Pollard Goals: Mitchell 5/6)
