PREVIEW: Junior representatives competitions kick off this weekend

The NSWRL junior representative competitions kick off this weekend, with the Canberra Raiders fielding teams in SG Ball (Under 18s), Harold Matthews (Under 16s) and the Tarsha Gale Cup (women's juniors). The Round 1 matches against the South Sydney Rabbitohs will kick off from 12:15am this Saturday at Raiders Belconnen, following the Raiders members day. Team line ups for the Canberra Raiders are still to be announced.

Albury teen Aidan Connell to play juniors with Canberra Raiders

An Albury youngster will play hooker for the first time in his career when he debuts in the NRL’s under 16 competition on Saturday. Aidan Connell will represent Canberra Raiders at home against South Sydney in the Harold Matthews Cup.

“I normally play lock, so playing hooker I’ll just need to play smarter, eyes up, always listening to my halves and observing what’s around me,” he said.

Canberra Raiders recruit Eden's Jordan Martin for SG Ball

Eden’s Jordan Martin has secured a starting position in the back row for the first game of the SG Ball Cup – the highest level of competition for boys his age. Jordan had an offer to join the Canterbury Bulldogs, although after a Colts trial game in Wagga he also impressed Raiders scouts and accepted the offer to move to Canberrra.

“I hope to get another gig next year and to keep going with it, to see what doors will open and to take every opportunity as it comes,” Martin said. “I would like to play for Australia which is every kid’s dream, and to make the NRL one day.”

NRL stars present Canberra Raiders Junior Representative jerseys

Sam Williams, Luke Bateman and former Raiders Matt Corkery and Jeff Lima were on hand this week to present the Junior Representative sides their jerseys for the 2018 season which kicks off this Saturday.

“It’s nice for them to know that they are a part of a system that is producing NRL players,” Dean Souter said. “When an NRL player from the system comes to present them their jersey, it gives them the idea that they can play in the NRL too.”
