Canberra Raiders Cup: Will Peace says Yass Magpies full of heart ahead of West Belconnen Warriors clash

Former Samoan international Will Peace says that what the Yass Magpies lack in size is outweighed by the size of their hearts as they set themselves up as a Canberra Raiders Cup premiership contender.

"Yass has the most heart out of all the teams I've played for," Peace said.

"You don't need to have the biggest players or the biggest names but when we get out on the field you know the person next to you will do what ever they can to help you out on the field."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Belconnen United Sharks let frustrations and Woden Valley Rams get better of them

With two sin-binnings and a send off, Belconnen Sharks let their frustrations and then the Woden Valley Rams get the better of them at Phillip on Saturday.

"We had 12 players on the park for 15 minutes of the second half and we were pretty gritty defensively trying to hold them out there, but the weight of possession and the fact we were short in the line didn't help," Sharks coach Scott Logan said.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 58 (L Spaander 3, J Ayers 3, T Whiley, N Ngere, J Dent, A Woods tries; B Crisp 9 goals) defeated Gungahlin Bulls 20 (K Madden, D Cooper-Shields, N Mead, T Sheard tries; D Williams 2 goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Weekend Wrap

Image

The West Belconnen Warriors have kept their finals hopes alive with a two point win over the third placed Yass Magpies at a cold and damp Walker Park on Saturday.

The scoring opened in the fifth minute, when Yass captain coach Steve Naughton made a break up the middle. He went to ground, but somehow offloaded to his brother Scott, who kicked ahead for winger Jesse Collins to plant the ball over the line in the corner.

A tight struggle then ensued for most of the first half. The Warriors were off their game, often gifting possession to the home team. But two minutes from the break, the Warriors received a ruck penalty - and the ensuing play saw Bobby Roberts shoot a brilliant pass to winger Cameron Scott for a four pointer in the corner. Roberts converted from the sideline, producing a 6-6 half time score line.

Amusingly, former Raider and Warriors trainer Matt Gafa received his marching orders from the referee just after the ruck penalty was awarded... and it was not the last time the trainer was ordered off in the match.

After the break, tries were again hard to find, but in the 57th minute, William Peace threw a ball willy nilly over his head, and fortunately, winger Jesse Collins was there to score his second. With no conversion from the sideline, the Magpies led 10-6.

The Magpies had not been headed for 70 minutes, but with 10 minutes remaining, a great offload from the Warriors Ryan McQueen - who has moved from fullback to halfback - produced a great offload, to send Tori Freeman-Quay crashing over the line. The conversion gave the Warriors the lead for the first time, and at full time the 12-10 lead would prove to be enough.

Yass Magpies V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

At Gunghalin, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos ran out big 56-20 winners over the Gungahlin Bulls. When the Bulls went to a 10-6 lead after 15 minutes - courtesty of tries to Raiders Under 20s forward, Kye Madden and Dale Cooper-Shields - it looked like it could be a closer than expected contest. But after the 20 minute mark, the Kangaroos asserted control and never let go.

Image

In the 21st minute, Josh Ayers scored the first of his hat trick of tries, taking back the lead, 12-10. And two more tries for the visitors, saw the men in maroon, white and black go to the break with a 24-10 advantage.

The Bulls' minds were clearly focused in the sheds, and a try to Gungahlin winger Todd Sherd in the 46th minute reduced the gap between the teams to 10 points. But a good individual run to Kangaroos five eighth Logan Spaander put the Queanbeyan outfit back into the groove. Only a Nick Mead try for the Bulls in the 68th minute interrupted the Kangaroos' try scoring. Spaander would end the day with a hat trick and the Kangaroos with 10. It was a comprehensive performance from a Queanbeyan team that benefited from the return of Brent Crisp, playing in the No. 1 jersey.

Gungahlin Bulls V Queanbeyan Kangaroos highlights

At Phillip, the Woden Valley Rams produced a physical 32-18 win over the Belconnen United Sharks. The Rams trailed 18-0 after 25 minutes, with tries to the Sharks' Damian Denny, Darcy Eason and Tino Sione. However, the Rams came back to lead 20-18 at the break before going on with it in the second half.

The Sharks' James Brown was sin-binned in the 59th minute before being sent of in the final moments. Sione was also binned for striking inside the final 10 minutes.

Woden Valley Rams V Belconnen United Sharks highlights

On Sunday, the Queanbeyan Blues ran out big 46-24 winners over the Bulldogs at a windy, cold Goulburn Arena. The Blues skipped out to an 18-0 lead after just 13 minutes, with frighteningly easy tries to Brendon Taueki, Thomas Reudiger and Jake Wheeler.

Image

After the Wheeler try, a horrible bounce off the post from the kick off - if you're a Blues' fan, that is - saw Bulldogs forward Blake Hewitt easily regather and head to the try line, uncontested. Ten minutes later, the fightback continued, with a Tyler Cornish try reducing the deficit for the Dogs to 18-8.

Normal transmission resumed when Blues winger George Stewart scored in the corner in the 32nd minute. And the Blues were looking dangerous again five minutes later, with men over and 80 metres of wide open spaces in front of them. But Bulldogs outside back, Dominic Stephens intercepted 20 metres out and his four pointer saw the gap again close to 10 points.

It looked like that would be the half time score, but if you relax against the Queanbeyan Blues, you pay - and Tyler Stevens made them pay just before the siren, giving the visitors a 28-12 margin at the break.

The opening 20 minutes of the second half was a bit of a struggle, but in the 57th minute, Blues fullback Jake Wheeler was sent to the sin bin, and Bulldogs outside back Zach Hart took immediate advantage. Blake Hewitt had been having an off day with the boot, but finally landed a conversion - yet again reducing the gap to 10.

Before Wheeler could return, Brendon Taueki scored a long range try, to put the Blues back into the groove - and a try to Blues prop Aaron McInnes put the result beyond any doubt with 10 minutes remaining. While Bulldogs five eighth Nick Cornish got one back in the 74th minute, the Blues capped off the victory in the final minute, with a try to hooker Ben Nicoll.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Queanbeyan Blues highlights

The Blues remain at the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder, four competition points in front of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos - and have extended their undefeated streak in 2017. The weekend's results leave the Magpies, Bushrangers and Warriors fighting for top four positions.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Blues too strong for Goulburn Bulldogs

If it was up to former Canberra Raider Terry Campese, Sundays would still be sacred - at least when it came to the Canberra Raiders Cup.

"It's hard getting up for a Sunday game knowing you've got work tomorrow," he laughed. "We streaked out to an 18-nil lead and were completing 100 per cent and then I think they scored five tries and all-but-one were from kick offs, " Campese said.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Preview

Image

A clash between the third placed Yass Magpies and the fourth placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers headlines Round 14 of the Canberra Raiders Cup this Saturday.

The Magpies had a tough tussle in with the West Belconnen Warriors last Saturday, going down by just two points in a low scoring affair. The Warriors did not take the lead until the the 70th minute, when Tori Freeman-Quay crossed the line - so Yass were more than competitive with the 2016 premiers. It has passed the point where we can consider Yass surprise packets - under the leadership of player/coach Steve Naughton and brother, and halves partner, Scott Naughton. With five rounds remaining, they are a definite shot at being in action at the business end of the season. They are currently on a WWWWL form line.

The Bushrangers are coming off the bye in Round 13, and now have the opportunity to take a share of third place if they can overcome the Magpies in this match. They are on a WLLWW form line in their past five matches, the two losses coming against the two Queanbeyan outfits. Tuggeranong's recent wins have come against the Sharks, Bulls and Bulldogs - producing a 30-22 victory over Goulburn in their last start.

Tuggeranong has slightly better attack than Yass, averaging 25 points per match (compared with 24 for the Magpies). Lanky winger Jayden Pollard is in great try scoring form for the Bushies, having scored 11 tries this season. Centre John Wesley Tautai and hooker Josh Mitchell aren't far behind him (both on seven tries). The problem for the Bushrangers is that they concede almost as many points as they score. In contrast, the Magpies concede less than 20 points per match on average.

The last time the two teams met, in Round 5 at Walker Park, the Bushrangers produced a 26-16 win. And this time around, the Bushrangers will have the home ground advantage. However, the Magpies probably have the better recent form. It should be a great contest and the result could easily go either way. However, we'll stick with form and tip the Magpies in a close one.

At Kippax, the West Belconnen Warriors and Woden Valley Rams will both be desperate for a win. The Warriors are just one competition point outside the top four - and have the chance to leap frog Tuggeranong, if the Bushrangers fail to beat the Magpies. They have a LLWLW record in their past five matches, with wins registered over the Bulls and Magpies.

Last week, the sixth placed Rams defeated the Belconnen United Sharks, 32-18. It was their first victory since Round 3, when they last beat the Sharks. They came close a couple of times in that period - with draws against the Magpies and Bushrangers - but that's a long time between drinks.

They are currently three competition points adrift of the top four, but realistically, it might be too late for the Rams to make the finals. If they won every remaining match, they would finish on 22 competition points - yet they still must face the two Queanbeyan powerhouses. Last season, the fourth placed qualifier finished on 23 competition points.

The Warriors ran out 30-22 winners over the Rams when the sides met earlier this year at Phillip in Round 5. Both teams have significant negative points differentials. Their attacking records are just about identical, but the Warriors have the better defence. We'll tip the Warriors to take this one out at home.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos host Goulburn at Freebody Oval, with the seventh-placed Bulldogs also in a must win situation. And when you're in that position, the Kangaroos are just about the last team you'd want to face. The Bulldogs have the advantage of having a bye in hand, but even if they win every remaining match, their best possible finish is 22 competition points.

The Kangaroos had a big 58-20 win over the Gungahlin Bulls last week - with star play maker Brent Crisp returning to the team from personal business in Darwin. They are on a WWLWW form line and have only lost twice this season - to the Queanbeyan Blues. They have the best attacking record (scoring a massive 40 points per match on average) and the second best defensive record in the league.

The Bulldogs lifted their results in the middle of the season, but have faltered more recently. They suffered a big 46-24 loss to the Queanbeyan Blues in their last start - and have a LWWLL record in their past five games. The Bulldogs have a negative points differential of 87, compared with +289 for the Roos. Last time the teams met, the Roos inflicted a 50 point defeat on Goulburn. The Kangaroos should take this one easily.

The final match-up is between the Gungahlin Bulls and Belconnen United Sharks - at the Bulls' alternative home at Nicholls. It's a clash between the bottom two teams - with the Sharks only having won one match this season, and the Bulls three. Sharks coach Scott Logan and Bulls co-coaches Lincoln Withers and David Howell will no doubt disappointed with how the season has turned out, but will be doing their best to use the final stages of the season to build a platform for their teams in 2018. In Round 5 this year, Gungahlin were 36-18 winners over Belconnen United. It's hard to go past the Bulls in this one.

Woden Valley Rams re-sign head coach Ash Barnes

The Woden Valley Rams announced they have extended the contract of Head Coach Ash Barnes for two years. Having come through the coaching ranks at the Rams, Barnes has been in his current role for three seasons. Rams President Steve Hicks said he was delighted with the deal.

“With a young squad, Ash’s ability to relate to them and develop them is really integral for us,” Hicks said. “We don’t have a lot of money to spend on buying players so we need to develop our own and I think Ash is the perfect person to do that.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Weekend Wrap

Image

The Yass Magpies have solidified their position in the top four, after a nail biting, two point win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers on Saturday. The result was in doubt right up to the final hooter, with the Bushrangers almost snatching an incredible come from behind victory.

The Bushrangers scored the first and final tries of the first half, but the Magpies had an imposing 24-8 lead at the break. Tuggeranong's Brendan Brophy crossed inside the first 10 minutes, after the Bushrangers threw the ball everywhere on the last tackle.

However, Yass then opened up with some impressive attack. A great run from Mitchell Smith, set up an opportunity for Magpies player/coach Steve Naughton to score a four pointer in the 13th minute. Smith then followed up with his own try in the 19th minute, giving Yass a 12-4 lead. Naughton went in for his second, after a great break from hooker Ben Warner in the 25th minute - and when centre Junior Vatikani scored seven minutes later, the Magpies were coasting at 24-4.

The Bushrangers started their comeback just seconds before the half time break, when second rower Dayne Ewings crossed. And as the second half progressed, the Bushrangers worked their way back into the match. In the 57th minute, Brendan Brophy was rewarded with a try after he chased a grubber, while the Magpies' defence was flat footed. Isi Afemui went over just five minutes later and all the momentum with with the Bushrangers.

With around 10 minutes remaining, Afemui scored his second for the afternoon, reducing the deficit to two points, 24-22 - setting up a helter-skelter final period. The Bushrangers threw everything at the Magpies, but Yass somehow held on. Tuggeranong scored five tries to four, but goal kicking proved costly, with just one successful conversion.

Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Yass Magpies highlights

Magpies coach Steve Naughton was happy with the win, and particularly pleased that his team held on with some desperate defence in the final 10 minutes.

"I thought we had a really good first half and controlled the game but we made it hard for ourselves in the second half," Naughton told The Canberra Times.

He will be no doubt hoping that his team plays as they did in the first 40 minutes when they face the Queanbeyan powerhouses in the next two rounds.

At Freebody Oval, it was a good contest between the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and the Goulburn Bulldogs - in the first half. Kangaroos' half Josh Essex scored with ease in just the third minute, off the back of a run from Aisea Toho.

The Bulldogs then steadied, and were assisted in their cause when The Bulldogs got themselves back into the match and were given a boost when Queanbeyan centre Tolokana Aroha-Tuinauvai was sent to the bin. However, the Roos went further into the lead in the 22nd minute, through a try to Mitch Connolly, giving the home team a 10-0 advantage.

The Goulburn outfit hit back in the 25th minute, after half Dylan Hately put through a cross field grubber for Chris Hart. But that would prove to be the only points of the match for the visitors. Kangaroos winger Jed Simbiken scored four minutes from the break, giving Queanbeyan a 16-6 lead at half time.

And then it was all the Kangaroos in the second half. Brent Crisp scored three tries in a row within the space 15 minutes, giving the hosts a 34-6 lead - and the match then just became a procession of try scorers for Queanbeyan. In the 67th minute, Brent Crisp ran the length of the field to score his fourth try of the day, with the Kangaroos posting 50 points.

The Roos ended with 11 tries in a 60-6 spanking of the Bulldogs. It was no surprise when Brent Crisp was named Man of the Match - and despite missing three matches, he must be well in the running for the Canberra Raiders Cup player of the year. He scored 30 of the Roos' 60 points.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Goulburn Bulldogs highlights

At Kippax, the West Belconnen Warriors produced a 30-16 victory over the Woden Valley Rams, with both Ryan McQueen and Ricky Fulivai scoring doubles for the home team. The result means that the Warriors have leap frogged the Bushrangers on the competition ladder and moved into the top four.

Meanwhile at Nicholls, the Gunghalin Bulls ran out 48-24 winners over the Belconnen United Sharks. Jesse Smith-Shields scored a hat trick for the Bulls, while Luke Hall scored a double off the bench.

Gungahlin Bulls V Belconnen United Sharks

The weekend's results see the two Queanbeyan teams still well out in front of the pack at the top of the competition ladder - and both are now certain to be there at the business end of the season. The finals hopes of the Goulburn Bulldogs and Woden Valley Rams may well have been extinguished. They are four competition points adrift of the fourth placed Warriors with just four rounds remaining. It leaves the Magpies, Warriors and Bushrangers the most likely teams to battle it out for two places in the top four.

Canberra Raiders Cup R14 Wrap

The Goulburn Workers Bulldogs’ finals hopes were dealt a blow as they suffered a 60-6 loss at the hands of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Seears Workwear Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Having suffered consecutive losses against the Tuggeranong Bushrangers and the Queanbeyan Blues, Goulburn needed an upset win but a Brent Crisp masterclass blew the Bulldogs away.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Preview

Image

The third placed Yass Magpies come up against the might of the Queanbeyan Blues at Walker Park in the match of the round of the Canberra Raiders Cup this Saturday.

The undefeated Blues will be fresh from the bye, while the Magpies are coming off an exciting two point win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers last Saturday. The Magpies unleashed some great attacking football in the first half of that match and led by 24-4 at one stage - but they had to withstand a huge comeback from Tuggeranong in the second half. Clearly, they will need to be better this week against the Blues.

Yass are now three competition points clear of the fourth placed West Belconnen Warriors. But they have a tough run home in the final month of the regular season - as they meet the two Queanbeyan powerhouses in successive weeks. The Magpies will be keen to take the points from at least one of those matches, so as to secure a top four placing. But that's a very difficult task.

Terry Campese's men have now won 12 straight matches this year. The Blues have the second best attack in the league (averaging 38 points per match) and the best defence (conceding 16 points per match). And given there are only four rounds left in the regular season, it's quite conceivable that the Blues will go the entire season undefeated.

The Magpies are in good form - and are currently on a WWWLW form line. They score a respectable 24 points per match, while conceding under 20. If there's one team in the competition that could spring an upset on the Queanbeyan teams, it is this one.

Player/coach Steve Naughton is his team's top try scorer this year, with six, after scoring a double against the Bushrangers. He's not the only player the Blues will watch, as he forms a very good halves combination with his brother Scott. In addition, fullback Andrew Swaffield, centre Junior Vatikani, and winger Jesse Dent have all posted five four pointers this year.

The last time the two teams met, the Blues recorded a 20-4 win at Seiffert Oval. Naugton knows his team will have to improve if they're to do it, but he's confident that they can.

"We've got the top two teams in the next two weeks which will be a big challenge for us, but I think if we play our best footy we can come away with the win," Naughton told The Canberra Times.

There could be an upset in this one, but despite the home ground advantage for Yass, the undefeated Blues should be too strong.

In Saturday's other match, the West Belconnen Warriors travel to O'Connor for a meeting with the Belconnen United Sharks. Having moved into the top four last week, the Warriors will want to make sure there are no slip ups this time against the Sharks. When the teams met in Round 6 at Kippax, the Sharks produced a 34-20 upset - and it is still the only win of the season for Belconnen United.

The Warriors have a LWLWW record in their past five matches - with recent victories over the Yass Magpies and the Woden Valley Rams. In contrast, the Sharks are on a seven game losing streak. Despite their top four placing, the Warriors have conceded more points than they have scored this season. They average 21 points scored per match - but concede 25. However, the Sharks have conceded a massive 42 points per match on average, scoring just 17. The Warriors should win comfortably.

On Sunday, the seventh placed Goulburn Bulldogs host the eighth placed Gungahlin Bulls. The Bulldogs are four competition points away from the fourth placed Warriors, and have a bye in hand. But any finals hopes they had were just about extinguished last week when they lost to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, 60-6. They are on a three game losing streak - and have only a 5-8 record so far in 2017.

It's realistically a bridge too far for the Bulls. They were last start winners over the Sharks, 48-24, but prior to that were on a three game losing streak. Gungahlin has won just four matches this season.

Both teams have unenviable defensive records. The Bulls have conceded an average of 29 points per match, the Bulldogs 32. The Bulls also have a better attacking record than Goulburn. But both have significant negative points differentials. In Round 6, the Bulldogs took the competition points, with a 32-24 win at Gugahlin.

This one could go either way - and may depend on the fitness of key players, like the Bulldogs' Tyler Cornish, who did not return in the second half of the clash with the Kangaroos. We'll tip the home team here.

In the final match of the weekend, the fifth placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers meet the Woden Valley Rams at Phillip. Like the Bulldogs, the Rams are just about out of finals contention - particularly as they are still to face the high flying Blues and Kangaroos. However, the Bushrangers are right in the mix for a finals slot - and are just one competition point adrift of the Warriors.

The Bushrangers have a LLWWL record in their past five matches, while the Rams have won just one from their last seven. Tuggeranong has a better attacking and defensive record - and a small positive points differential for the season. The Rams have a negative points differential of 98. When the two teams last met in Round 6, we saw a 16-16 draw at Greenway.

Despite suffering a narrow loss to Yass last weekend, Tuggeranong coach Justin Giteau was happy with his team's big second half comeback.

"I thought once we started playing as a team we started playing some good footy," he told The Canberra Times.

He'll be looking for more of that second half form on Sunday. The Bushrangers should have too much at stake to let this match get away from them.

After a tense finish to their tight two point win last week, Yass will be out to knock off competition leaders the Queanbeyan Blues and move further inside the top four.

“We’ve got plenty belief in our own side,” Yass coach Steve Naughton said. “We need to put a full 80 minutes together if we are any chance to get a win over the Blues.”

Canberra Raiders Cup: Woden Valley Rams and Tuggeranong Bushrangers end in stalemate

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Weekend Wrap

Image

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers and Woden Valley Rams have fought out a draw for the second time in 2017 in Sunday's Canberra Raiders Cup action.

The Bushrangers were well in control of the match at half time, leading 18-6 - before a courageous comeback from an injury striken Rams in the second half. Rams forwards Jeff Morgan (shoulder) and Brad Prior (knee) left the field in the second half, while Josh Pheeney (suspected facial fracture) and Cleveland McGhie (head knock) battled on.

A draw keeps the Bushrangers in the hunt for a finals place, but a draw was never going to be enough for the Rams. They are now five competition points shy of the fourth placed West Belconnen Warriors, with just three rounds remaining - and face the two Queanbeyan powerhouses in the next two weeks.

The Bushrangers were dominant for much of the first half. They went to a 6-0 lead in the 11th minute courtesy of a try to hard running fullback Tim Vatibuli. Jayden Pollard set it up for the Raiders junior, when he cleverly produced a one on one strip to gain possession. The Bushies followed that up in the 20th minute with a try to Dayne Ewings.

Second rower Michael Gilmour, who was one of the Rams' best, got one back in the 27th minute, scoring the first of his two tries under the posts. But just five minutes later, Tuggeranong struck back when big prop Atunaisa Tupou crashed over - delivering an 18-6 advantage for the visitors at the break.

Woden Valley Rams V Tuggeranong Bushrangers highlights

The Rams started their come back six minutes into the second half. Ron Leapai produced a great break near half way and made a barn-storming run to the try line to reduce the Rams' deficit to six. And in the 52nd minute, Michael Gilmour scored his second try, twisting in a tackle and somehow planting the ball in the in goal. Raiders junior Jayden Carroll could not convert, but the Rams were suddenly right back in the match.

It looked like the Bushrangers had re-asserted control in the 66th minute, when a great pass from Blake Hensen set Isi Afemui up for a four pointer - giving Tuggeranong a 24-16 lead.

But the Rams were not done. With 11 minutes remaining, Brad Prior chased an unexpected Charlie Hallam grubber to score - and the Rams again trailed by just two points.

Just two minutes later, a ruck infringement from the Bushrangers' Dayne Ewings on Michael Gilmour produced a penalty for the Rams - and surprisingly, they elected to go for the goal. Jayden Carroll calmly stepped up and potted it, levelling the scores, 24-24, and setting up a frantic nine minutes.

Tuggeranong five eighth Blake Hensen had a shot at field goal in the 76th minute, but it just missed. The final minutes saw Woden attacking in the red zone. Again they surprised, electing not to set up for a field goal - and their last desperate attempt to score a try came up short.

Rams coach Ash Barnes was proud of his team - despite ignoring his instruction to go for one point in the final minutes.

"It was tough and that's why I'm pleased with that second half performance. They really hung in there and gave everything," Barnes told The Canberra Times.

At O'Connor, the pain of the 2017 continued for the Belconnen United Sharks, defeated by the West Belconnen Warriors 60-0.

The Warriors were desperate for the win, so as to shore up their place in the top four. They did it in style, leading 26-0 at half time, and going on to score 11 tries. Fullback Ryan McQueen and centre Ryley Thomas both scored hat tricks for the visitors.

The win leaves the Warriors just one competition point behind Yass, after the Magpies suffered a 52-6 thrashing at the hands of the Queanbeyan Blues at Walker Park on Saturday.

Belconnen United Sharks V West Belconnen Warriors highlights

Yass Magpies V Queanbeyan Blues highlights

It also sets up a huge clash between the Warriors and the Bushrangers at Kippax next Sunday. West Belconnen will be aiming to overtake the Magpies and move into third place, while Tuggeranong will have a chance to draw equal with the Warriors should they win.

Sharks coach, and former Raiders forward, Scott Logan, was again left disappointed.

"People talk about the two Belconnen clubs but there is a fair gap between the two and that was evident today... Guys can sense the end of the season coming and it just doesn't mean enough to them at the moment, which is disappointing," Logan told The Canberra Times.

In the other match on Sunday, the Goulburn Bulldogs had a big 48-22 win over the Gungahlin Bulls. The Bulldogs have a bye in hand, and matches against the Sharks and Magpies in the final rounds of the season - and can finish with a maximum of 18 competition points. The fourth placed Warriors already have 18 points - so despite the win, it's already season over for Goulburn.

Goulburn Bulldogs V Gungahlin Bulls highlights

The weekend's results see the Blues and Kangaroos still well in front of the pack - and now have the top two placings wrapped up.

Tuggeranong’s run towards the finals hit a minor speedbump on Sunday afternoon, as the Woden Valley Rams fought back from 18-6 down to earn a 24 all draw.

An easy afternoon appeared to be on the cards for the Bushrangers as Timoci Vatubuli opened the scoring with a soft try from dummy half.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Preview

Image

The West Belconnen Warriors meet the Tuggeranong Bushrangers this Sunday at Kippax in the match of the round of the Canberra Raiders Cup.

A win for the fourth placed Warriors could see them overtake the Yass Magpies and move into third - while the fifth placed Tuggeranong will have a chance to draw equal with the Warriors should they win.

The Warriors produced a huge 60-0 win over the Belconnen United Sharks last Saturday, shoring up their place in the top four. They scored 11 tries all up, with fullback Ryan McQueen and centre Ryley Thomas both scoring hat tricks. The result also did wonders for West Belconnen's points differential... which is now in positive territory.

The Bushrangers, on the other hand, drew with the Woden Valley Rams - the second draw of the season between the two clubs. Tuggeranong was well in control of the match at half time, leading 18-6 - before a courageous comeback from an injury striken Rams. The exciting match ended at 24-24, but the one competition point was enough to keep the Bushrangers in the hunt for a top four position.

Last year's premiers have struggled at times this season, but the Warriors have lifted in form in recent weeks. They are now on a WLWWW form line in their past five matches - with victories over the Bulls, Magpies and Rams in that run. They are now averaging 24 points scored per match, while conceding 23.

The Bushrangers have a LWWLD record in their last five games, with wins over the Bulls and Bulldogs. Tuggeranong score and concede an average of 25 points per match.

Tuggeranong forward Wayne Bullock is well aware is team cannot slip up this Sunday.

"We're playing every week like it's our Grand Final now. We know if we lose one, we make it very hard for ourselves," Bullock said.

West Belconnen prop Aidan Greenwood views the game in a similar way.

"Three pretty big weeks coming up, probably against three of the better teams in the competition as well," Greenwood said.

"This week's our Grand Final... if Bushies win and they go ahead in terms of for and against, it's going to be pretty tough to catch them from there."

The Warriors have a tough road home, facing the two Queanbeyan teams in the final rounds. But Aidan Greenwood is confident the Warriors can peak at the back end of the season.

"We've had a few injuries to key players. We've had all our boys out through reps at the start of the year with Under 23s, so that threw us out a bit. So we're starting to get our team back together and the last couple of weeks are starting to show it," Greenwood said.

The last time the two teams met, the Warriors recorded a 36-26 win over the Bushrangers at Greenway. Both teams will be desperate, but on balance, West Belconnen have the better recent form on the board. We will go with Warriors in this one.

On Saturday, the second placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos host the third placed Yass Magpies at Freebody Oval.

The Kangaroos will be fresh off the bye, but are formidable opposition for the Magpies regardless. The Roos have the best attack in the competition. And if they'd stopped a couple more converted tries, they'd be matching the best defence in the league as well. They have lost only two matches all season - to cross town rivals the Blues - and have already wrapped up a top two finish. Last time these two teams played, in Round 7 at Walker Park, the Roos came away 37-12 victors.

The Magpies have surprised everyone this season and have a reasonable record in their past matches (WWLWL). But they suffered a serious blow last weekend - a 52-6 defeat at the hands of the ladder leading Queanbeyan Blues at Walker Park. A loss will give the Warriors an opportunity this weekend to leap frog them on the ladder - and they'll be desperate for a victory. But it's difficult to see them besting the Kangaroos in this match.

Also on Saturday, the Queanbeyan Blues will meet the Woden Valley Rams at Seiffert Oval. The Blues are undefeated in 2017 - a 13 game winning streak. They score nearly 40 points per match on average and concede less than 15.

The Rams are on a LLWLD form line in the past five matches and have a negative points differential of 98. The last time the teams met, the Blues won 34-16 at Phillip.

It was a courageous performance from the Rams last week to force a draw against the Bushrangers, but it would be the upset of the season if they can turn the tables on the Blues. Their finals hopes were effectively extinguished last weekend. Expect the Queanbeyan outfit to win by a big margin.

In the remaining match of the weekend, the Goulburn Bulldogs face the Belconnen United Sharks at O'Connor on Saturday. In the last match between these clubs at Goulburn in Round 7, the Bulldogs were 28-14 winners.

The Bulldogs produced a big 48-22 win over the Gungahlin Bulls last weekend - and will be expecting another big victory over the last placed Sharks on Saturday. Belconnen United are on an eight game losing streak and have won just once this year.

Goulburn will still harbour some finals hopes - particularly as they have a bye in hand, plus two winnable matches to play. The trouble for the Bulldogs is they have a big negative points differential. They'll just want to keep on winning and hope. It should be a big margin for the Bulldogs here.

The Greenhouse will be heading to Kippax for the Warriors V Bushrangers this Sunday. Our live scores will come to you via @CanberraCup on Twitter, with half and full time scores posted right here.

If you're at one of the grounds this weekend, make sure you post your pics and score updates on Twitter, using the #CRCup hashtag.
