29th min TRY PANTHERS to Darren Nicholls. Dave Taylor misses the tackle, a number of players could have stopped him. Nicholls converts.

32nd min Mounties penalised for a dangerous tackle on Tyrone May, but it's just a good hard tackle. Mounties should have the ball.

36th min Yileen Gordon knock on in the ruck 1m out on the last. Luckily the Panthers now also knock on in the ruck.

40th min Dave Taylor drops the ball in Mounties own half. Gives the Panthers a chance with a minute to go. But they drop it first ball.

Croker looks like he was knocked out.

Second half back underway. Panthers kick off. And it starts with an error from Sam Duggan.

42nd min TRY PANTHERS to Jed Cartwright, set up by Egan. It's all down to the Duggan error. Too easy, the try. Nicholls converts.

47th min Taylor tackled on the last, now Mounties give away a penalty. Poor performance here.

That was a ridiculous ruck penalty. The panthers player walked off the mark and dropped it into the Mounties player. The refs are just guessing at this stage.

56th min TRY MOUNTIES to Dave Taylor running wide off a Croker pass. Now there's a biting complaint from Darren Nicholls. Brent Naden on report. Converted John.

Naden had a chomp there I reckon. Silly lad, he is one injury from first grade.

Croker really takes a lot of wrong options.

63rd min Kato Otto makes a big break, but was eventually wrapped up. And the bomb on the last was nearly taken by Rennie. Big opportunity missed.

So much like first grade at the moment. The halves are offering nothing much and the rushing defense is killing them.

78th min Rennie knocks on in the ruck, gives Penrith a scrum feed 20m out.

Panthers 18-12

FULL TIME

Mounties very flat in attack, and the halves looked disorganised. Taylor got some good minutes, but is a fair way off first grade fitness.

Strong performance from the forwards but the halves were very poor. They play like clones of first grade but with worse kicking games.

I was impressed with Naden, he could cover for firsts comfortably. Lima as always was good and really should be in the 17. The young guy Nelson also looked pretty good.

DT was dangerous but clearly needs more match fitness.

He played 75 minutes. Seemed to get through OK but is several weeks off, fitness wise. Bye next week doesn't help.

He was so good at creating overlaps with direct running.... and then messes it up by stepping back in and going himself or running too far into his support. Like 9/10 times.

Still, Mounties completion rate was absolutely abysmal. Like 11/21 in the first half and didn't get much better in the 2nd. Wasn't mostly forwards dropping ball though. Everyone was muffing it.

Walked off with a tight calf but looked like cramp from lack of condition rather than an injury. I was surprised they played him 75mins with no break. Thought it would have been good to have him 30mins, break before half time with some massage then another 30mins. I guess with the bye they just wanted to blast out the cobwebs.

Yeah 75 and you could tell he felt it. He was cramping most runs in the second half. Carrying some pudding too.

MATCH REPORT: Improved Panthers hold out Mounties

The Penrith Panthers have put aside the disappointment of last week’s loss to Canterbury-Bankstown to record an important 18-12 win over fellow top-four aspirants Mounties in a torrid affair played in surprisingly good conditions at Pepper Stadium.

Darren Nicholls was instrumental in his side’s Intrust Super Premiership NSW win, not only scoring an individual try and three goals for a haul of 10 points, but steering his young side with a terrific all-round performance. For the visitors, Dave Taylor’s tireless 76-minute effort kept his side in the hunt right up to the final whistle.

Penrith Panthers 18 (M Oldfield, D Nicholls, J Cartwright tries; D Nicholls 3 goals) def Mounties 12 (D Reardon, D Taylor tries; I John 2 goals)

75 min from a bloke who hasnt played since 2009 is a good effort.

We're Mounties short on troops or was the plan to flog the big man half to death ?

Anyway next week he plays again and ONE day we'll see him in FG.

Scott Sorenson and Royce Hunt were missed. The back up 2nd row Jensen was coming back from his own injury, but if they wanted to give DT less minutes they would have had no issue doing it. Yileen Gordon was the other starting 2nd rower. What a specimen he is. Big step down in quality minutes from Sorenson. He just doesn't ask the same questions of the defense.

Next week is the Bye.
