ISP NSW Team Of The Week | Round 20

10. Liam Knight
Club: Mounties; 2017 TOTW selections: 0.
20 total runs, 184 total metres, 4 tackle breaks, 21 tackles, 2 offloads

A feature in Mounties surprise, 41-point upset over league-leaders the Wyong Roos, Liam Knight got the better of his former teammates in the nine-tries-to-two win at Morry Breen Reserve. Bending the Roos’ defensive line back at every opportunity, Knight ensured he – and his new club mates at the Mounties – walked away with the bragging rights over the Premiership favourites.

13. Scott Sorensen (C)
Club: Mounties; 2017 TOTW selections: 4.
17 total runs, 201 total metres, 2 tries, 1 try assist, 3 linebreak assists, 15 tackles, 0 missed tackles

17. Bill Cullen
Club: Mounties; 2017 TOTW selections: 0.
19 total runs, 189 total metres, 3 tackle breaks, 14 tackles

Interesting to see this as well: Reubenn Rennie (Newtown Jets) and Magnus Stromquist (Wentworthville Magpies) started the year with Mounties and made the team of the week at other clubs... And former Raiders Thomas Cronan and Adam Clydsdale also made the team of the week at other clubs.

2017 Rd 21 Mounties V New Zealand Warriors preview

Mounties V New Zealand Warriors
Saturday July 29, Mt Smart Stadium, 1:00pm

The Mounties head to Auckland, New Zealand this weekend to take on the Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium in Round 21 of the NSW Premiership.

Last weekend: The Mounties produced their best win of the season in Round 20, defeating the first placed Wyong Roos, 51-10, on the Central Coast. While the nine tries to two win simply maintained Mounties fifth placing, the performance was a reminder to the whole competition of what last year's minor premiers can deliver at their best.

The Roos went to an early 6-0 lead, with a try to Nat Butcher after just five minutes - and it looked like it could be another long afternoon for Mounties. But the rest of the half was all yellow and black. Scott Sorensen started the scoring for the visitors in the 16th minute, with a try out wide - and that was followed up four minutes later by a try to Liam Knight under the posts.

In the 32nd minute, Glen Buttriss sent the ball to the right on the last tackle and Kato Ottio kept the ball alive by kicking it in field. A perfect bounce ended up in the hands of Buttriss, who chased through and ran in under the posts. Just a few minutes later, Eddie Aiono fended, stepped and bounced his way to the try line - also on a last tackle play. An Isaac John field goal on the stroke of half time gave Mounties a 25-6 lead.

2017 Round 20 Mounties V Wyong Roos highlights

The Roos lost both winger Josh Mantellato (arm) and centre Brendan Frei (hamstring) in the first half and things just got worse for the home team in the second. Tries to Makehesi Makatoa, Brent Naden and Scott Sorensen gave Mounties an imposing 41-6 lead by the 60th minute. A Luke Sharpe four pointer for the Roos in the 63rd minute was a temporary interruption to the scoring for the Mt Pritchard outfit. Tries to Alofi Mataele and Kato Ottio rounded out the rout.

Scott Sorensen broke the 200 metre barrier and scored a double for Mounties (201 metres from 17 runs, one try assist, three linebreak assists, nine tackle breaks, 15 tackles). He was ably supported in the forwards by Bill Cullen (189 total metres from 19 runs, 3 tackle breaks, 14 tackles), Liam Knight (184 metres from 20 runs, four tackle breaks, 21 tackles, two offloads) and Jeff Lima (170 metres from 18 runs, one offload). In the backs, five eighth Lachlan Croker made three line breaks and delivered a try assist, while Eddie Aiono made 10 tackle breaks.

This week's contest: The New Zealand Warriors are in third place on the ladder, with with one more win and one more draw than Mounties. The Warriors are on a slide with a LLLWL form line in the past five matches - their only victory coming at the expense of Illawarra in Round 19. They suffered a 38-12 loss to the Newtown Jets at Henson Park in their last start. Mounties are on a LLLDW form line in their past five games, so they have also been on a slide... up until Round 20's upset win.

The Warriors head into this contest with a slightly better record in attack and defence. They score an average of 24 points per match, compared with 23 for Mounties. The Warriors concede an average 19 points per match, Mounties 21.

Team changes: For Mounties, Glen Buttriss is out of the squad, with Sam Duggan named to replace him at starting hooker. Royce Hunt has been named at prop, with Jeff Lima selected in the top squad for the Raiders. Hooker Jarrod Brackenhofer is included in the top 17 on the bench. Mitch Kennedy is named at 18th man on an extended bench.

For the Warriors, Charnz Nicoll-Klokstad comes into the team on the wing for Paulos Latu. Ofahiki Ogden and Isaiah Papalii replace Johnny Vuetibau and King Vuniyayawa as starting second rowers. Vuniyayawa and Vuetibau drop to the extended interchange list. Charlie Gubb and Semisi Fotu have been added to the extended bench, while Kenese Kenese drops out of the squad.

The Warriors' squad includes former Raiders Zac Santo and Matthew Allwood - with Santo turning out for Mounties only a matter of weeks ago.

Our tip: The last time these two teams met in Round 7, it was a 30-30 draw at Aubrey Keech Reserve - despite Mounties scoring six tries to five. Ironically, Warriors fullback Zac Santo scored a double that afternoon... for Mounties. Reubenn Rennie, who has since moved to the Newtown Jets, also scored a double for the men in black and yellow.

It is always a tough "road" trip to New Zealand. Ricky Stuart has included Royce Hunt and Scott Sorensen at No. 20 and 21 in Canberra's NRL squad to meet the Rabbitohs, so it remains to be seen if they will travel. The loss of experienced hooker Glen Buttriss will have an impact as well. But the Mounties team named has a good shot at toppling the Warriors on their home turf, taking their impressive outing against Wyong into account. We'll go out on a limb and say Mounties by six.

Welcome to our coverage of today's NSW Premiership clash between Canberra Raiders affiliate Mounties and the New Zealand Warriors at Mt Smart Stadium. Kick off is at 11am AEST (1pm NZ). This post will update with live scores.

New Zealand Warriors vs. Mounties
Mt Smart Stadium, Saturday July 29
1.00pm

The Warriors were flying high throughout the opening half of the season but the omission of key personnel has seen them take a significant dip in form. Heading into their battle against the Newtown Jets as heavy favourites in Round 20, an out-of-character performance saw them leak 38 points in a surprising defeat.

The Mounties will be brimming with confidence following their dominant 51-10 victory over ladder leaders Wyong Roos on Saturday afternoon, and will be desperate for another victory to climb into the top four.

The classy halves duo of Lachlan Croker and Isaac John has been instrumental in their success this season, playing behind a powerful forward pack that’s lead by Jeff Lima and new signing Liam Knight.

MATCH REPORT: New Zealand Warriors outmuscle Mounties

Late tries to Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad and Isaiah Papali'i thwarted a Mounties comeback to earn the Warriors a crucial 32-22 victory in today's 21st-round Intrust Super Premiership NSW clash at Mt Smart Stadium.

They were given a huge scare as they sought to give their campaign a much-needed boost after last week's disappointing 12-38 loss to lowly-ranked Newtown.

The Warriors' handy 16-6 half-time lead was quickly trimmed to 16-14 by the visitors early in the second half before they drew level 22-22 with 15 minutes to play.

Warriors 32 (M Allwood, B Faraimo, M Cherrington, T Sipley, C Nicoll-Klokstad, I Papalii tries; J Pauga 4goals) def Mounties 22 (I John 2, A Mataele, M Makatoa tries; I John 3 goals)

2017 Rd 23 Mounties V Newcastle Knights preview

Image

Mounties V Newcastle Knights
Saturday 12 August, 3:00pm, Aubrey Keech Reserve

The Mounties face the Newcastle Knights at home this Saturday in Round 23 of the NSW Premiership. Having dropped to sixth on the competition ladder, they will be eager to get themselves back on the winners' list.

Last match: Mounties suffered a 32-22 loss to the New Zealand Warriors in their last start in Round 21. The Warriors led 16-6 at half time, with Mounties' only try coming in the 14th minute, to winger Alofi Mataele. Mounties fought back after the break, through two tries to halfback Isaac John in the 44th and 53rd minutes. Neither was converted, but John's double reduced the Warriors' lead to just two points.

With around 20 minutes remaining, Warriors prop Toafofoa Sipley crashed over the line, extending the home team's advantage. However, Mounties came back again just a few minutes later, with a try to Royce Hunt. And when Isaac John landed a penalty goal in the 68th minute, the match was level, 22-22 - raising the prospect of a stirring come from behind win for the visitors.

Round 21 Mounties highlights

Sadly, the momentum swung back to the Warriors in the final stages instead. In the 73rd minute, a spilled Mounties ball gave centre Fetalaiga Pauga the opportunity to run 70 metres before offloading, putting Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad over the try line. The match was secured for the New Zealand outfit by a four pointer to Isaiah Papalii, with less than five minutes remaining.

Isaac John was the best for the Mt Pritchard club, his two tries nearly swinging the match for the men in black and yellow. He made two line breaks, three tackle breaks and 18 tackles. Royce Hunt was Mounties' strongest in the forwards, scoring a try and making 145 metres from 11 runs, one line-break, seven tackle-breaks, one offload and 22 tackles. Liam Knight and Jack Nelson topped the tackle count with 33, followed by Bill Cullen with 26. Hunt, Knight, Makahesi Makatoa and Scott Sorensen all broke the 100 metre mark in the forward pack.

This week's contest: The Newcastle Knights are in ninth place on the ladder, one competition point away from the top eight. Mounties have just one more win and one more draw to their name than the Knights this season. Newcastle have a WWWLL record in their past five matches - losing in their last two starts to Illawarra and North Sydney by only two points. Mounties are on a LLDWL form line in their past five games.

The two teams have similar attacking records, averaging 23 points scored per match. Mounties, however, have the better defence, conceding 22 points per match, compared with 25 for the Knights.

Team changes: For Mounties, Glen Buttriss returns as starting hooker, with Sam Duggan dropping back to the bench. Royce Hunt will start at prop, after Makahesi Makatoa was a late inclusion in the starting team in Round 21. This week, Makatoa drops back to the bench. Star Raiders Holden Cup forward, Jack Murchie is to be tested in the second row, with Jack Nelson named as an interchange player. Yileen Gordon will be 18th man, while Jarrod Brackenhofer has dropped out of the squad.

For the Knights, Chanel Mata'utai has been included on the wing at the expense of Raiders junior Thomas Cronan, who drops to the bench. Holden Cup forward Pasami Saulo has been named at starting prop, in place of Tyrone Amey - who moves to lock. Bradie Smith from lock to second row, with Samuel Stone not named.

Our tip: The last time the two teams met, the Knights ran out 24-18 victors at Cessnock, with Trent Hodkinson producing a man of the match performance for Newcastle. Hodkinson won't be there this time, after featuring in first grade recently.

Despite two narrow losses in the past two weeks, the Knights probably have the better recent form line. Mounties' only win in the past month was a good one, however - accounting for the first placed Wyong Roos three weeks ago. The return of the experienced Glen Buttriss will be a real boost for Mounties. It will also be interesting to see how Jack Murchie goes at NSW Premiership level. He should add some youthful exuberance to the team. Another plus for Mounties is that they should be fresh after last weekend's bye. This match could go either way, but we'll tip Mounties at home in a close one.

Newcastle Knights hold out 12-man Mounties

The Newcastle Knights have kept their Intrust Super Premiership NSW finals hopes alive with a 32-20 win over a fast-finishing, 12-man Mounties outfit in an entertaining match laced with late controversy at Aubrey Keech Reserve this afternoon.

Both sides took advantage of the fine, warm weather and fast-playing surface to play the match at a cracking pace for the full 80 minutes – with the controversy coming when Mounties centre Brent Naden was sensationally sent off by referee Damien Briscoe for dissent with 15 minutes left, giving away what became the match-deciding penalty in the final washup.

Newcastle Knights 32 (J Gagan 2, T Hughes, C Mata'utia, J Cogger, J Feeney tries; B Robson 3, N Meaney goals) def Mounties 30 (R Hunt 3, J Murchie, L Knight tries; I John 5 goals)

2017 Rd 24 Mounties V Newtown Jets preview

Image

Mounties V Newtown Jets
Saturday 19 August, 3:00pm, Henson Park
Radio: http://steelesports.com.au/ On line from 2:30pm

The Mounties travel to Henson Park to meet Sharks affiliate, the Newtown Jets this Saturday in Round 24 of the NSW Premiership. Mounties lost last Saturday to the Newcastle Knights, 32-30 - and have now only won one match and drawn one in their past seven games. Mounties remain in sixth place on the competition ladder, but need to win at least one of the remaining two matches to guarantee a top eight finish.

Last match: The clash with the Knights was a controversial one, with centre Brent Naden sent off with 15 minutes remaining, while Mounties were in possession. He was first penalised for dissent, then sin-binned for dissent, then sent off for dissent. The ensuing penalty goal produced a 32-18 lead for the Knights - and that would ultimately prove to the be the difference between the sides.

The Knights started well, with a try to winger Thomas Hughes in just the fourth minute - his 17th for the season. The Mt Pritchard outfit hit back with two tries to prop forward Royce Hunt, giving Mounties a 12-4 lead at the 20 minute mark. Newcastle then went on their own spree, scoring three tries in the space of 10 minutes - including a double to centre Jacob Gagan. The visitors suddenly led 18-12, with eight minutes to the break.

But Mounties still had something left to give in the first half, with Makahesi Makatoa making a break, setting up a try scoring play for halfback Isaac John. John kicked across field and Raiders Under 20s player Jack Murchie leapt for the ball and produced his first four pointer in the NSW Premiership. It was 18-18 at half time.

After the break, the Knights took back control, with tries to Jack Cogger in the 42nd minute and Jaelen Feeney around 10 minutes later. It gave Newcastle a 30-18 lead... which was extended to 14 points when Naden was dismissed. In an extraordinary finish, a 12 man Mounties team staged a comeback, with tries to Liam Knight and Royce Hunt in the final five minutes. But it was all too late.

Royce Hunt ended the match with a hat trick. He also made 150 metres from 15 runs, 13 tackle breaks and three line breaks. Fellow forward Liam Knight made 175 metres from 17 runs and topped the tackle count with 24. In the backs, Brent Naden ran 183 metres from 16 runs. Hooker Glen Buttriss produced four try assists, four line break assists and 17 tackles.

This week's contest: The Newtown Jets are in 11th place on the ladder, and have no chance of playing finals football. The Jets have won just six matches, and drawn one, while Mounties have won nine and drawn two.
Newtown have a LLWLL record in their past five matches - losing 46-10 to the Panthers in their last start. Their only recent win has been against the second placed New Zealand Warriors in Round 20. Mounties are on a LDWLL form line in their past five games.

Mounties have the better attacking and defensive record. They score an average of 23 points per match, with the Jets scoring 19. Mounties concede 22 points per match, the Jets 27. That adds up to a negative points differential of 159 for the Jets.

Team changes: Mounties have named the same squad as last week. In a late change last weekend, Jack Murchie was relegated to the bench, with Jack Nelson starting the match. However, Murchie has again been named in the starting second row this week, with Nelson on the bench.

For the Jets, Jaimin Jolliffe and Jaydne McDonagh will swap positions, with Jolliffe moving to prop and McDonagh moving to lock. The Jets team includes former Raiders Adam Clydsdale at hooker, Edrick Lee at centre, and Jack Williams in the second row. Former Mounties outside back Reubenn Rennie also lines up for the Jets at centre. Clydsdale and Rennie switched teams mid season, while Lee switched just before the season kicked off. They'll all have a point to prove in this game.

Our tip: This is a match that Mounties should win... but there have been quite a lot of matches that they should have won, but did not, this year. The likes of Clydsdale and Rennie should certainly strengthen the Jets. However, we'll tip that the men in black and yellow will secure their finals place this week.

Knight and Hunt both posted good numbers last week.

Did Naden just lose the plot or what?

From what I can gather he got held down in a tackle, maybe after a line break, and got up protesting for a penalty. He must've said something out of line because he got penalized instead and then got binned. Then he said something even worse and got sent off. So fair to say he lost the plot but I guess it depends what he said.

2017 Mounties

Post by The Greenhouse »

Welcome to our coverage of today's NSW Premiership clash between Canberra Raiders affiliate Mounties and the Newtown Jets.

You can listen to the Steele Sports online radio call of the match from 2:30pm: http://steelesports.com.au/ and this post will update with live scores.

Newtown Jets v Mounties
Henson Park, Saturday 19 August
3pm

Out of the finals race after back-to-back big losses to the Bulldogs and Panthers respectively, the Newtown Jets will be playing the role of ‘spoiler’ when they welcome the Mounties to Henson Park in Round 24.

Poised in sixth, a win the Mounties would likely seal their berth in the 2017 finals series, pending the form and success of Illawarra, Newcastle and the Wentworthville Magpies.

Mounties teeter on the edge of the top eight after two-straight losses, and will be hoping to quickly rediscover the form that saw them put on 51 points against the Wyong Roos in Round 20.

Very close call, that should secure a top eight spot for Mounties.

Canberra Raiders Jack Murchie’s star continues to rise

IT’S been a highly successful year for Milton-Ulladulla junior and Canberra Raiders’ up-and-comer Jack Murchie, with the tough second-rower only having a NRL jersey left to add to his ever-growing mantle for 2017.

“Playing for Canberra would be a dream come true, it’s all I have wanted to do since I was a kid,” Murchie said. “Sticky [Ricky Stuart] and the other coaches have already taught me so much - I set a couple of goals that I wanted to crack this year and I’ve pretty much got them all as of now except for playing first grade.

MATCH REPORT: Mounties pip Jets in windy conditions

Mounties have pipped the Newtown Jets 10-6 in wildly windy conditions at Henson Park.

The Jets led for the majority of the game, but Mounties had it over them for the entire second half, and even though they only conceded once in that time, a late try to Lachlan Croker relinquished the lead and ultimately the match.

Mounties 10 (E Aiono, L Croker tries; I John goal) def Newtown Jets 8 (A Clydsdale, T Tamou tries)

Good to see it looks like Murchie is on the books for next year. There was talk he was been chased hard by Sydney clubs.

Not surprising. Sydney clubs chased pretty hard and got Jack Williams and he hadn't played for the Aus or NSW team.

Guess that confirms Clark as our backup playmaker / utility for next year. I would have played him at 6 with Isaac John playing at 7 but I guess it doesn't make too much of a difference.
