2017 Rd 25 Mounties V Blacktown Sea Eagles preview

Image

Saturday 26 August, 3:00pm, Aubrey Keech Reserve
Radio: http://steelesports.com.au/ On line from 2:00pm

The final round of the NSW Premiership before the finals sees Mounties at home for a clash with the Blacktown Sea Eagles. Mounties produced an overdue win against the Cronulla Sharks affiliate, the Newtown Jets, 10-8, at a windy Aubrey Keech in Round 24. They move to fifth on the ladder and their 28 competition points make a finals place secure.

Last match: The Jets led last Saturday's clash for most of the match, until Isaac John set up a try for regular five eighth Lachlan Croker in the 66th minute. It was the only scoring play of the second half, and the decisive one.

Jets hooker Adam Clydsdale - who switched from the Canberra Raiders to the Cronulla Sharks mid season - opened the scoring in the 12th minute. He simply drove through the defensive line from dummy half. Mounties levelled the match in the 33rd minute, when Scott Sorensen threw a great offload to Eddie Aiono, who ran away to score in the corner. But the Jets took back the lead just two minutes later, after good work from another former Raider, Edrick Lee set up a four pointer for winger Tyla Tamou out wide.

It was just 8-4 in favour of the Jets at half time, with goal kicking made difficult by the blustery conditions.

This week's contest: The Blacktown Sea Eagles are in 10th place on the ladder, and have no chance of playing finals football. The Sea Eagles are 8 and 13 this season, while Mounties have won 10 and drawn two.
The Sea Eagles are on a three game winning streak, which includes wins over the ladder leading Wyong Roos (28-24) and the eighth placed Illawarra (24-22). Mounties are on a DWLLW form line in their past five games, while Blacktown has a LLWWW record.

Mounties score an average of 23 points per match, but condede 22. They have a points differential of +23 points. The Sea Eagles score an average of 22 points per match, but concede 27... for a points differential of -108. Earlier this season, in Round 13, Mounties defeated Blacktown, 44-30, at Brookvale Oval.

Team changes: For Mounties, Lachlan Croker has moved to fullback, with Yileen Gordon and Michael Gordon forming a new centres partnership. Eddie Aiono will start on the wing. Late inclusion at five eighth last week, Maurice Kennedy, has again been named in that position this week - and is joined in the halves by Raiders Under 20s play maker Erin Clark. Regular halfback Isaac John has been named in No. 19 on an extended bench. There are no changes to the forward pack that took the field against the Jets. Jeff Lima has been included in the top 17 on the bench, with Alec Susino dropping to the reserves list. Kato Ottio has not been named.

For the Sea Eagles, Viliami Kaveinga replaces Pita Godinet at fullback. Former Mounties player, Pat Mataele comes in at centre for Jonathan Wright. Joey Lussick moves from hooker to halfback, in place of Cameron Cullen. That's good news for Mounties, as Cullen caused plenty of problems the last time the teams met. Dean Parata has been named at starting hooker. Ben Fritz comes into the top 17 on the bench. Former Raiders and Mounties forward, Jarrad Kennedy will line up in the second row for Blacktown.

Our tip: This is a match that Mounties should win. However, the Sea Eagles have shown some good recent form. In addition, the second half of the Mounties' season has been disrupted by the mid season losses of players like Adam Clydsdale, Zac Santo and Reubenn Rennie. There are quite a few changes to the line up again this week. Erin Clark has been named in three teams - as a reserve for the Raiders' first grade, and at half in the Raiders NYC team, as well as for Mounties. But Clark will most likely play in this match. It's an interesting shake up in the spine on the eve of the finals - and it's difficult to know how the side will gel. However, we'll go with the home team in this one.

Dominant Mounties pile on the points

The Mounties have recorded an emphatic 44 points to 12 win over the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles in the sides’ Round 25 clash at Aubrey Keech Reserve.

Running in 8 tries to 2, the 2016 Intrust Super Premiership NSW Grand Finalists flexed their muscles against an undermanned Workers Sea Eagles outfit.

Mounties will take on defending Intrust Super Premiership NSW Premiers Illawarra in the first week of the Finals - a rematch of the 2016 decider.

Mounties 44 (J Nelson 2, M Oldfield, E Aiono, L Knight, L Croker, J Murchie, M Makatoa tries; M Kennedy 6 goals) def Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles 12 (J Lussick, J Tuitahi tries; J Hastings, J Lussick goals)

We've been smashed by Illawarra twice this year. Going to be a tough game. Interesting rules they must have around home finals for this stuff. Having to play at the lower team's home ground for a final when you finished 5th.

NSWRL 2017 Team Of The Year | ISP NSW

16 – Scott Sorensen
Club: Mounties; 2017 TOTW selections: 7.

1951 total metres, 408 tackles, four tries, nine line-break assists, six line-breaks.
Scott Sorensen has been massive for Mounties once again in 2017; he does all of the hard-yards but also provides his fair share of x-factor to break a game wide open. The 24-year-old is an imposing figure in any Rugby League team, and it puts opposition sides on notice when someone of that stature is making 26 tackles per game and is also running for 122 metres per match, not to mention putting no less than nine teammates away for line-breaks at different stages of the year. No doubt Sorensen will play a massive part for Mounties in the upcoming Intrust Super Premiership NSW finals series.

2 second rowers, a small prop and a utility.
Have to be the smallest they've run with all year.
At least the defence should be pretty mobile.

2017 NSW Premiership Finals Week 1: Mounties V Illawarra preview

Image

Saturday 26 August, 3:00pm, Aubrey Keech Reserve
Live stream: http://www.nswrl.com.au/ and https://www.facebook.com/NSWRL/
On line radio: http://steelesports.com.au/ from 2:00pm

It's finals time in the NSW Premiership - and in Week 1 we see a replay of the 2016 Grand Final. It's a clash between the fifth placed Mounties and the eighth placed Illawarra.

Last match: Mounties produced a much needed, 44-12, win on the eve of the finals - albeit against an under strength Blacktown Sea Eagles outfit. Mounties had the better of the opening stages and went to an early 4-0 lead, courtesy of a try to Michael Oldfield.

The Sea Eagles hit back in the 12th minute - with Blacktown half Joey Lussick gathering up an attacking grubber from Lachlan Croker in the Blacktown red zone, and running 80 or 90 metres to score a try. Jackson Hastings converted from the sideline, giving the Sea Eagles a two point lead.

But the rest of the first half belonged to Mounties. Eddie Aiono went over in the corner in the 19th minute, off the back of quick hands from Maurice Kennedy, Scott Sorensen and Yileen Gordon. Eight minutes later, a no-look, short ball from Erin Clark put Jack Nelson into a hole, and he crossed untouched. And two minutes before the break, a good short ball from Jeff Lima put fellow forward Liam Knight in for a four pointer - giving the home team a 20-6 half time lead.

Mounties continued to dominate in the second half, with the Sea Eagles disrupted by the loss of five eighth Jackson Hastings through injury. Just two minutes in, Jack Nelson hit the short side and crashed over for his second try. In the 53rd minute, a kick ahead from Eddie Aiono ricocheted and Lachlan Croker was there to take advantage - giving the home team a 32-6 lead.

Five minutes later, Sea Eagles winger James Tuitahi went over in the corner, after a Mounties error turned over possession. But that was as good as it got for Blacktown, with Mounties controlling the final 20 minutes.

In the 63rd minute, Erin Clark gave a simple inside ball to Jack Murchie, who drove through the Blacktown defensive line for a four pointer beside the posts. A try to Mounties forward Makahesi Makatoa, with 13 minutes remaining, delivered the final 44-12 scoreline.

Mounties forward Liam Knight was the man of the match. He scored a try, made 182 metres from 19 runs, one line break and two tackle breaks. Knight and hooker Glen Buttriss topped the tackle count for Mounties with 26. In the backs, Eddie Aiono made 235 running metres from 19 runs, while Yileen Gordon made 151 from 13. Erin Clark ended with three try assists.

This week's contest: Illawarra snatched a last gasp draw against the Canterbury Bulldogs last Saturday, securing eighth spot on the ladder - and shutting down any chance that Wentworthville might force their way into the finals. Illawarra has produced 10 wins and one draw this season, while Mounties have 11 wins and two draws. Mounties are on a WLLWW form line in their past five games, while Illawarra has a LWWLD record.

Illawarra has defeated Mounties twice so far this season: 40-18 in Round 8 at Wollongong and 24-10 in Round 17 at Canberra Stadium. That follows Illawarra's upset win over Mounties in the 2016 Grand Final.

Mounties score an average of 24 points per match and concede 21. They have a points differential of +55 points. Illawarra score an average of 22 points per match, but concede 25... for a points differential of -78.

Team changes: For Mounties, Royce Hunt comes into the starting front row for Makahesi Makatoa, who drops back to the interchange bench. There are no other changes to the Mounties team that defeated the Sea Eagles.

For Illawarra, Jacob Host replaces Joshua Kerr in the starting second row, with Kerr dropping to the bench. Matthew Jurd drops out of the top 17. Former Raiders and Mounties forward Rhys Kennedy will line up for Illawarra at prop.

Our tip: The win/loss record suggests that Mounties should be too strong in this match - until you consider the fact that Illawarra has run out winners in the two clubs' head to head contests this year. Both teams have similar form lines. This one really is a toss up. I'll go with Mounties - given the good performance in their last start. Mounties by two.

Are sea eagles often seen in Blacktown?
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.
