Canberra Raiders Cup: Woden Valley Rams blow lead and finals hopes against Queanbeyan Blues

The Woden Valley Rams blew a 16-point lead against the Queanbeyan Blues and their second-half capitulation on Saturday threatens to destroy their Canberra Raiders Cup finals hopes.

"We addressed all the things that we wanted to do in the second half, but we went away from that a little bit," Rams Coach Barnes said. "Handed over too much ball, gave away a few penalties late in the sets and that really swung the momentum."

QUEANBEYAN BLUES 30 (L Branighan, I Ngata, T Tui, J Wheeler, J Lenihan tries; J Baker 3, L Berkrey 2 goals) defeated WODEN VALLEY RAMS 26 (A Lucas, T Evans, R Leapai, J Taws, K Harawira tries; K Harawira 2, T Crome goals)

WEST BELCONNEN 24 (R McQueen, R Roberts, T Sloman, R Thomas tries; R Roberts 4 goals) defeated TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 20 (J Pouono 2, M Holmes, M Lyons tries; Q Cannon 2 goals)

GUNGAHLIN BULLS 56 (B Hill 2, J Iroa 2, J Eliot, D Howell, R O'Sullivan, N Sauer, B Scholes, J Scholes tries; J Scholes 8 goals) defeated BELCONNEN SHARKS (20 R Vai, U Takitaki, S Lomax, J Johnston tries; D Eason 2 goals)

QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 80 (A Woods 3, T Whiley 2, K Parsons 2, B Crisp 2, T Boyd-Black, L Cooper, B Cronan, S Dunn, R O'Sullivan; tries B Crisp 11, T Williams goals) defeated YASS MAGPIES 0

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Wrap up

Image

The Queanbeyan Blues have likely put paid to any hopes that the Woden Valley Rams can make the Canberra Raiders Cup finals in 2016.

The third placed Blues took on the fifth placed Rams on Saturday at Seiffert Oval and it looked like there might be an upset at half time.

Image

The Rams led 22-6 at half time on a stunning winter's day in Queanbeyan - cold, but with the beautiful blue skies we typically see in the Capital Region in July.

The Rams scored four tries in the first half, including a bustling try to Ron Leapai and a long range effort to Kahi Harawira right before the hooter in the 39th minute.

But in the second half, it was all undone. The Blues put on 24 points in a big come back, taking the game 30-26. The Blues only took the lead for the first time in the 64th minute, with a try to Josh Baker.

The Blues wrapped it up in the 76th minute with a try to Luke Branighan, taking the lead to 30-22. A late try to the Rams, in the final two minutes, produced the 30-26 final score.

Rams coach Ashley Barnes admitted it will be difficult to now make the finals, five competition points away from the fourth placed Bulls.

"I think now we're relying on other results to go our way, so we're still going in with the notion that we want to win all our games going forward to give us every opportunity," Barnes said

In other games, the second placed West Belconnen Warriors protected their ladder placing with a tight 24-20 win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers. Both teams scored four tries. The Bushies have put in a good effort, but it's not quite been enough in 2016.

At O'Connor, the Gungahlin Bulls had a 56-20 win over the Sharks, with Blake Hills and Jamian Iroa scoring doubles, very likely sewing up a top four position.

And at Freebody, the ladder leading Roos put on show, defeating the Magpies 80-0, with a hat trick to Aiden Woods, and doubles to Troy Whiley, Kody Parsons and Brent Crisp. It's hard to see them missing the minor premiership.

Queanbeyan Blues 30 (L Branighan, I Ngata, T Tui, J Wheeler, J Lenihan tries; J Baker 3, L Berkrey 2 goals) defeated Woden Valley Rams 26 (A Lucas, T Evans, R Leapai, J Taws, K Harawira tries; K Harawira 2, T Crome goals)

West Belconnen Warriors 24 (R McQueen, R Roberts, T Sloman, R Thomas tries; R Roberts 4 goals) defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 20 (J Pouono 2, M Holmes, M Lyons tries; Q Cannon 2 goals)

Gungahlin Bulls 56 (B Hill 2, J Iroa 2, J Eliot, D Howell, R O'Sullivan, N Sauer, B Scholes, J Scholes tries; J Scholes 8 goals) defeated Belconnen United Sharks 20 (R Vai, U Takitaki, S Lomax, J Johnston tries; D Eason 2 goals)

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 80 (A Woods 3, T Whiley 2, K Parsons 2, B Crisp 2, T Boyd-Black, L Cooper, B Cronan, S Dunn, R O'Sullivan; tries B Crisp 11, T Williams goals) defeated Yass Magpies 0

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Preview

Image

With just three rounds to go, it looks like the final four is settled: the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, West Belconnen Warriors, Queanbeyan Blues and Gungahlin Bulls.

The minor premiership, however, is still up for grabs, with the Warriors trailing the ladder leading Roos by just two competition points, and the Blues trailing by three.

Mathematically, the Woden Valley Rams could still sneak into fourth, but that would require the Bulls to lose every remaining match, and the Rams to win their remaining two. Given the form of the Bulls, and the quality of the Rams' opposition, that doesn't seem likely. It could be expected that the Bulls would at least beat the Yass Magpies in Round 17.

The match of the round takes place at the temporary home of the Bulls, Jamison Enclosed, where they will meet the West Belconnen Warriors. The Warriors were narrow winners over the Bushrangers last weekend, while Gungahlin put on a big score against the last placed Belconnen United Sharks. Its a battle of former Raiders in the coaching ranks, with West Belconnen's Troy Thompson matching it with Gungahlin's David Howell and Lincoln Withers.

The fifth placed Woden Valley Rams will be hoping that the Warriors get the win, while they take on the Goulburn Bulldogs at Phillip. The Rams led the Queanbeyan Blues last weekend by 22-4 at half time, but they let the home team back into the match, eventually losing by just four.

Woden has a good chance of defeating the Bulldogs, but then face a very difficult match against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos - a team currently on a 12 match winning streak. At least the Rams will face the Roos at home. They have a guaranteed two points in the final round, with the bye.

There's a sprinkling of former Raiders and juniors in the match, with the likes of Chevi Ellis and Cleveland McGhie named for the Rams, and Michael and Joe Picker named for the Bulldogs.

In other matches, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos meet the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Freebody Oval. The Bushies can expect a tough match, after the Roos put on 80, yes 8, 0, points against the Yass Magpies. And at O'Connor it is a battle between cellar dwellers Belconnen United Sharks and the Yass Magpies. No doubt the Sharks will see this as a chance to get themselves off the bottom of the ladder.

The Greenhouse will be at Shark Park, Cronulla on Saturday, so we will not have live scores on @CanberraCup; we will have full time scores in this thread and on Twitter.

Saturday 6 August 3:00pm

The Gungahlin Bulls survived a heart-stopping final play to edge out West Belconnen 24-18 on Saturday afternoon and continue their push late in the season for a top two finish.

The Bulls pack is both powerful and mobile, and the ascendancy and space they created for their backs went a long way to setting up an early lead and three first-half tries.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 16 Wrap

The two Queanbeyan teams now occupy the top of the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder after the Bulls pulled off a big upset in defeating the Warriors. The Warriors lost their grip on second spot on the ladder and Woden Valley Rams are now definitely out of finals contention as a result.

"Our forwards have been outstanding for the last month. They've really laid the platform and they're starting to see the benefits from that," Bulls coach Lincoln Withers said.

"It's been a while for us to be in the finals, so to cement our spot there is good and hopefully in the next couple of weeks we can build up and hit our straps."

Gungahlin Bulls 24 defeated West Belconnen Warriors 18
Queanbeyan Kangaroos 30 defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 14

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 17 Preview

Image

There's two rounds left and the final four is settled - the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, Queanbeyan Blues, West Belconnen Warriors and Gungahlin Bulls - but the final placings are not.

The competition leaders, Queanbeyan Kangaroos, are three points ahead of the Blues on the ladder and it looks likely the Roos will take the minor premiership. The Kangaroos face the Woden Valley Rams this weekend at Phillip and then the fourth placed Gungahlin Bulls in the final round. Neither game will be "easy", but the Roos have only lost one match all season, way back in Round 2. They need to win just one of those games to make first spot a certainty.

The match of the round is at Seiffert Oval between teams two and three, the Queanbeyan Blues and the West Belconnen Warriors. Which ever team wins is set to wrap up second spot on the ladder, and a second chance in the finals. Both teams face sides in the bottom half of the table in the final round. It is again a coaching battle between former Canberra Raiders - the Blues' Simon Woolford and the Warriors' Troy Thompson. A good sprinkling of current and former Raiders will also feature - Luke Berkrey, Trevor Thurling and Mark Appleton.

The Greenhouse will be covering the match from Seiffert, with live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter, and half and full time scores in this thread. The Greenhouse will also have live scores from the Holden Cup match which follows at 5:30 pm here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=31052

The Gunghalin Bulls are three competition points adrift of the West Belconnen Warriors, so it is unlikely they can finish higher than fourth. They will be favourites to defeat the Yass Magpies at Walker Park this weekend, but then face the Kangaroos in the final round.

In the other match this weekend, the bottom two teams, the Goulburn Bulldogs and Belconnen United Sharks, face off. The Bulldogs will want to wrap up the match, leaving the Sharks with this year's spoon.

Saturday 13 August
Goulburn Bulldogs v Belconnen United Sharks, Workers Arena, 2:00pm
Queanbeyan Blues v West Belconnen Warriors, Seiffert Oval, 3:00pm

Queanbeyan Blues beat West Belconnen to secure second place in Canberra Raiders Cup

The Queanbeyan Blues have booked a major semi-final showdown with cross-town rivals Queanbeyan Kangaroos in a fortnight after beating West Belconnen on Saturday to secure second spot on the ladder.

"It's massive. We get another crack. We didn't want to be going into a semi-final against Gungahlin in a couple of weeks in do-or-die games," Blues coach Simon Woolford said. "You want to earn the right to get a second chance, and we've done that now."

YASS MAGPIES 22 (A Swaffield, J Collins, J Smith, S Naughton tries; C Rawlinson 2, S Ketia-Opo goals) defeated GUNGAHLIN BULLS 16 (B Martin, D Low, J Scholes tries; J Scholes 2 goals)

QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 59 (S Meke 3, R O'Sullivan 2, J Ayres, J Macey, T Whiley, T Williams, J Miller, L Cooper tries; L Cooper 7 goals; T Williams field goal) defeated WODEN VALLEY RAMS 0

BELCONNEN SHARKS 30 (A Pelasio 2, D Denny, M Butz, T Sione, B Nangaiti tries; D Eason 3 goals) defeated GOULBURN BULLDOGS 16 (T Greenwood 2, D Stephens tries; C Hart 2 goals)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 17 Wrap up

Image

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos are 2016 Canberra Raiders Cup minor premiers after they produced a huge 59-0 win over the Woden Valley Rams at Phillip on Saturday.

The Roos have been defeated just once this season, a thrashing at the hands of the Queanbeyan Blues at Seiffert Oval in Round 2. But since, then, it's the Roos who have been handing out the punishment.

The Kangaroos piled on 11 tries, with a hat trick to Sekope Meke and a double for centre Ryan O'Sullivan. It was a sad end to the season for the Rams, who have the bye in the final round.

With just one round remaining, the second placed Queanbeyan Blues cannot overtake the Roos on the competition ladder, as the Blues are three points adrift. The Kangaroos take on the fourth placed Gungahlin Bulls in the final round of the regular competition.

In the match of the round at Seiffert Oval, the Blues secured a top two finish to the season, with a 32-22 defeat of the West Belconnen Warriors.

The Blues started fast, going out to an early 12-0 lead after just nine minutes, through tries to Jarrod Lenihan and Alex Tulolo. West Belconnen gradually got back into the grind, and eventually, the pressure produced tries to the Warriors either side of half time. Trailing by just 12-8, West Belconnen was right in the match at the 44th minute.

However, the Blues reasserted control, scoring four tries in the space of 14 minutes. With under 10 minutes remaining, the Queanbeyan side led by 32-8 - but a late flurry of points from the Warriors, including two tries to Ryley Thomas and a try to Bobby Roberts, put some respectability back into the score line.

The win for the Blues will see them meet the Kangaroos in the first week of the finals in two weeks time, and "two bites at the cherry" in the finals campaign. The Warriors will end the season in third spot.

"It's massive. We get another crack. We didn't want to be going into a semi-final against Gungahlin in a couple of weeks in do-or-die games," Blues coach Simon Woolford told the Canberra Times. "You want to earn the right to get a second chance, and we've done that now."

In other matches, the Yass Magpies produced what was probably the upset of the season, defeating top four team, the Gungahlin Bulls by 22-16 at Walker Park, Yass.

And in something of an upset, the bottom placed Belconnen United Sharks defeated the Bulldogs at Goulburn, 30-16. It leaves both teams on eight competition points, but the Sharks are still in the wooden spoon spot, on points differential.

Yass Magpies 22 (A Swaffield, J Collins, J Smith, S Naughton tries; C Rawlinson 2, S Ketia-Opo goals) defeated Gungahlin Bulls 16 (B Martin, D Low, J Scholes tries; J Scholes 2 goals)

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 59 (S Meke 3, R O'Sullivan 2, J Ayres, J Macey, T Whiley, T Williams, J Miller, L Cooper tries; L Cooper 7 goals; T Williams field goal) defeated Woden Valley Rams 0

Belconnen United Sharks 30 (A Pelasio 2, D Denny, M Butz, T Sione, B Nangaiti tries; D Eason 3 goals) defeated Goulburn Bulldogs 16 (T Greenwood 2, D Stephens tries; C Hart 2 goals)

Queanbeyan Blues 32 (J Lenihan 2, T Stevens 2, A Tulolo, J Ulrick tries; L Berkrey 4 goals) defeated West Belconnen Warriors 22 (R Thomas 2, T Aroha-Tuinauvai, R Roberts, L Saipani tries; R Roberts goal)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 18 Preview

Image

Here we are. The final round of the regular season in the Canberra Raider Cup.

We have a final four and final placings are decided, with Queanbeyan Kangaroos V Queanbeyan Blues and West Belconnen Warriors V Gunghalin Bulls to be the first clashes in the finals.

But this week, we see team one meeting team four: Queanbeyan Roos V Gungahlin Bulls at the home of the Bulls. It's a clear match of the round, finals football a week early. The Kangaroos have been so dominant, it is hard to see them losing. They have lost just one game all season, while the Bulls have looked a bit shaky in recent weeks. The Bulls lost to the Yass Magpies, in a major upset in Round 17, while the Kangaroos powered on to a 59-0 win over the Rams.

There are plenty of familiar names for Canberra Raiders fans, with the likes of youngsters Tre Williams and Kody Parsons named for the Roos and veterans David Howell and Drury Low named for the Bulls. Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell has been named at starting hooker. The Bulls' Lincoln Withers is the only coach on the sideline, with both Howell and Gorrell set to play.

The other finalists meet teams at the foot of the table. The West Belconnen Warriors take on the Magpies at Raiders Belconnen - and surely another upset can't happen? The Blues meet the Goulburn Bulldogs at the spiritual home of the Raiders at Seiffert Oval. Both the Warriors and the Blues will be wanting to show some good form in these matches as they head to the finals.

In the other match this week, the remaining two teams who are out of contention, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers meet the Belconnen United Sharks at Greenway. The Sharks also produced something of an upset last weekend and they - along with the Bulldogs - will have the incentive of trying to avoid the 2016 spoon.

The Sharks and Bulldogs are both equal last on eight competition points. For the Sharks to finish above the Bulldogs, they must win and Goulburn must lose - given the Sharks have a significant disadvantage on points differential. If both lose, or both win, its highly likely the Sharks will take the spoon.

The Greenhouse will be covering the Friday Night Football clash and the Saturday match up between the Warriors and Magpies. We will have live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter, and half and full time scores in this thread.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Blues look to haunt Goulburn's off-season again

Just 349 days ago, the Goulburn Bulldogs were a Ben Nicoll charge down away from a Canberra Raiders Cup premiership.

Now they are riding an eight-game losing streak and fighting to avoid the dreaded wooden spoon ahead of their final game of the season against Simon Woolford's Queanbeyan Blues on Saturday.

"We've got to get to the grand final first," Blues coach Simon Woolford said. "To do that we need to win a game or two, so we'll worry about that if and when we get there."

Canberra Raiders Cup: West Belconnen drubbing ends Yass Magpies' return in agony

A wry smile from West Belconnen centre Tevita Aroha was all you needed to know the Warriors were well in control against the Yass Magpies on Saturday.

"I think the players are ready for the season to be over," Yass coach Steve Naughton said. "It's been a long year, the first one back. We tired out today. It would have been nice to go out on a win but they gave it all and they can hold their heads up for the year."

WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 44 (T Aroha 2, A McDonald, L Saipani, B Loughhead, R Thomas, B Roberts, R McQueen tries; Roberts 6 goals) defeated YASS MAGPIES 6 (M Lawrence try; P Sparnon goal)

QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 24 (J Miller 2, J Ayers, S Meke, J Pearce tries; L Cooper 2 goals) defeated GUNGAHLIN BULLS 4 (M Sollis try)

TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 38 (A Tupou 2, Z Mitchell 2, J Pouono, B Henson, S Fetuani tries; S Fetuani 2, Z Mitchell 2, W Bullock goals) defeated BELCONNEN SHARKS 18 (T Sione 2, BJ Sione, M Butz tries; A Pelasio goal)

QUEANBEYAN BLUES 46 (A Tulolo 2, L Branighan, M Cullen, J Martin, A Misios, J Nchouki, T Stevens, J Ulrick tries; J Baker 3, L Berkrey 2 goals) defeated GOULBURN BULLDOGS 6 (J Picker try; C Hart goal)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 18 Wrap up

Image

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos have ended the regular season of the Canberra Raiders Cup at the top of the tree, and now face cross town rivals, the Queanbeyan Blues next Sunday in the first week of the finals. 2016 has been a great achievement for the Kangaroos, losing just one match in the regular season, way back in Round 2.

The Kangaroos travelled to Gungahlin on Friday night, and defeated the fourth placed Gunghanlin Bulls in pelting rain and driving winds. They sent a signal to the rest of the competition that they can graft out a win, as well as run in plenty of points.

The rain started as the teams ran out on the field, and it poured for the whole match. It was a tight first half, with plenty of errors given the conditions. Goal kicking was just about impossible.

The match was a bit fiery as well, with the Roos' Sekope Meke being sent to the sin bin in the 16th minute for punching. It seemed to make little difference to the Kangaroos, however, and they led by 8-0 after 20 minutes.

The Gungahlin Bulls' only points of the match came through a try to winger Michael Sollis, after a kick to the corner in the 33rd minute. The Bulls trailed by just four points at half time, 8-4, but the Roos powered on with three tries in the second half.

A try to Jared Pearce in the 77th minute wrapped it up for the Roos, securing a 24-4 victory.

On Saturday, the third placed West Belconnen Warriors gave the Yass Magpies a lesson at Raiders Belconnen. It's been a great effort from Yass in their first season back, but they were no match for the Warriors.

The conditions, again, were bizarre, with periods of bright sunshine and periods of swirling winds and icy rain. West Belconnen went out to an early lead after eight minutes, with a try to winger Andrew McDonald, from a kick to the corner. There was no scoring for the next 20 minutes, but a try to Leu Saipani and Bayley Loughhead late in the first half gave the Warriors a 16-0 half time lead.

The only try for the Magpies came in the 49th minute, after Matt Lawrence took advantage of a rebound. But the Warriors put on five second half tries, including a double to Tevita Aroah Tuinauvai. There was some great running and goal kicking from the Warriors' Bobby Roberts, and he was able to get over for his own four pointer.

In the end, it was a comprehensive 44-6 victory for the Warriors. They now meet the Gungahlin Bulls next weekend in the first week of the finals.

In other matches, the Queanbeyan Blues had a big win over the Goulburn Bulldogs at Seiffert, with Alex Tulolo scoring a double for the Blues. Joe Picker scored the only try for Goulburn. At Greenway, the Tuggeranong Bushrangers had a good 38-18 win over the Belconnen Sharks. Unfortunately for the Sharks, the loss left them with this year's spoon, on points differential - with the Goulburn Bulldogs narrowly escaping the cutlery.

Next week, The Greenhouse will be at the Canberra Raiders Cup major semi final between the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and Queanbeyan Blues at Freebody Oval. The Greenhouse will be at Brookvale Oval on Saturday for the Canberra Raiders clash with the Manly Sea Eagles.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 24 (J Miller 2, J Ayers, S Meke, J Pearce tries; L Cooper 2 goals) defeated Gungahlin Bulls 4 (M Sollis try)

West Belconnen Warriors 44 (T Aroha 2, A McDonald, L Saipani, B Loughhead, R Thomas, B Roberts, R McQueen tries; B Roberts 6 goals) defeated Yass Magpies 6 (M Lawrence try; P Sparnon goal)
