Interesting that article is in the Age. I can always remember growing up in Melbourne running down the store at sunrise on a Sunday to grab the Age and see the Canberra Raiders cup scores. All of the afternoon would be spent discussing the scores!!

I guess The Greenhouse would be grateful they didn't have to score update that game at the same time as Mounties.

Would have been the most interesting thing happening in Victoria on a Sunday no doubt.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 12 Wrap up

Image

The Queanbeyan Blues came from behind again this week, but this time took the win against a plucky Goulburn Bulldogs. It was a fiery affair at times, with the Blues' Luke Berkrey sent from the field 11 minutes into the second half. Both sides also lost a player to the sin bin after punches were thrown in the same incident.

It was all the Goulburn Bulldogs in the first half, with a hat trick of tries to Dominic Stephens - one in the eighth minute and two in the final six minutes of the first half. A try to Luke Berkrey in the 19th minute just kept the Blues in the position to come back in the second half. The Bulldogs led 18-6 at half time.

The Blues came back from the break fired up, narrowing the gap to just two points after 55 minutes, through tries to Naseri Naseri and Tyler Stevens.

A try to the Bulldogs' Mick Picker saw Goulburn's lead extended to 24-16 in the 65th minute.

But with just four minutes remaining, Queanbeyan Blues winger Joe Agresta scored in the corner and Malu's conversion reduced the deficit to just two points. Then with all the momentum, the Blues scored again through Tyler Stevens to snatch the lead and set up a 28-24 victory.

In other matches, the ladder leading Queanbeyan Kangaroos scored 11 tries at Freebody Oval to defeat the fourth placed Gungahlin Bulls. The Roos' Bryan Cronan and Kody Parsons scored hat tricks, Trey Williams scored a double. The Bushrangers produced a narrow 28-24 win over the Belconnen United Sharks at O'Connor. At Yass, the West Belconnen Warriors were big winners over the Magpies.

QUEANBEYAN BLUES 28 (T Stevens 2, N Naseri, J Agresta, L Berkrey tries; E Malu 4 goals) defeated GOULBURN BULLDOGS 24 (D Stephens 3, M Picker tries; B Picker 4 goals)

QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 58 (B Cronan 3, K Parsons 3, T Williams 2, B Crisp, J Macey, T Boyd-Black tries; B Crisp 7 goals) defeated GUNAGHLIN BULLS 24 (J Eliot, D Howell, D Low, D Smith tries; J Scholes 4 goals)

TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 28 (M Lyons 2, Q Cannon, S Fetuani, M Holmes, A Tupou tries; Q Cannon 2 goals) defeated BELCONNEN SHARKS 24 (BJ Sione 2, S Tupuala, J Butz, D Eason tries; D Eason 2 goals)

WEST BELCONNEN 46 (R Thomas 3, L Saipani, T Freeman-Quay, A Greenwood, P Ryan, C Wynnik, tries; R Roberts 7 goals) defeated YASS MAGPIES 4 (T Gavenlock try)

Try-scoring double a birthday gift for Sloman in West Belconnen Warriors' win over Woden Valley Rams

West Belconnen front-rower Tim Sloman had even more reason to celebrate blowing out 23 candles after his two tries in Saturday's 37-32 win over Woden Valley.

"Two middle units [scoring doubles] so we're pretty happy with that," Sloman said. "We'll remind the other boys tonight. I usually only score one try a year, if that.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Roos shore up top spot with road win over Goulburn Bulldogs

The Queanbeyan Roos secured a 10th-straight win to retain outright top spot on the Canberra Raiders Cup table with a 38-20 win at bottom side Goulburn on Sunday.

The match was littered with a number of spiteful incidents after half-time as tempers frayed, with Goulburn's former Canberra Raider Joe Picker and Roo Steven Dunn both sin-binned for punching early in the second half. Tensions boiled over again just after the full-time siren.

Goulburn will host Yass Magpies in a catch-up game at Goulburn Workers Arena this Wednesday at 8.20pm.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 13 Wrap up

Image

The West Belconnen Warriors have maintained their second placing on the Canberra Raiders Cup ladder, after a high scoring, entertaining 37-32 win over the Woden Valley Rams at Phillip on Saturday.

Front rower Tim Sloman and youngster Harry Whatman both produced doubles for the Warriors, while fullback Michael Geiger bagged a double for the Rams.

The first half saw six tries scored, with both teams gaining the momentum at different stages. The Rams scored first, and then grabbed back the lead in the 31st min with a try to Michael Geiger taking the score to 14-12. But it was the Warriors that went to the half time break with a 19-14 advantage, through a try to fullback Aidan Greenwood in the 38th minute and a field goal to Robert Roberts right on the bell.

In the second half, the Warriors were never headed, with stunning long range tries to Whatman and centre Thomas Riley a highlight. But it was tit for tat tries - a further six scored in the half - with the Rams repeatedly striking back. The Rams were in the contest right to the end, with a try just two minutes from time not quite enough.

On Sunday, it was a fiery clash at Workers Arena, with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos delivering their 10th win in a row, a 38-20 victory over the Goulburn Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs scored early through Matt Worboys, and went to a 10-4 lead after a try to former Canberra Raiders half Mick Picker in the 14th minute. But the Kangaroos piled on three tries in the final seven minutes of the first half, to go to the break with a 20-10 lead.

A blistering long range try to Tre Williams three minutes into the second half saw the Roos continue their purple patch.

Shortly after, the match erupted, with the Bulldogs' Joe Picker and the Roos' Steven Dunn sin binned for 10 minutes after punches were thrown.

It didn't disrupt the Kangaroos. When Tre Williams scored his second try in the 57th minute, the Kangaroos stretched their lead to 38-10. While the Bulldogs staged something of a comeback in the final 20 minutes, through tries to Codie Medway and Pat Cooke, it was not enough.

The match ended in another dust up as the hooter sounded - with punches again flying. A penalty to the Bulldogs was awarded, but it was all too late for the bin.

In other matches, the Queanbeyan Blues did enough to defeat the Belconnen United Sharks 28-10, while the Tuggeranong Bushrangers were big winners over the Yass Magpies. The Womens' U18s representative tackle match saw Canberra dispose of Illawarra 16-8 at Seiffert Oval.

West Belconnen Warriors 37 (T Sloman 2, H Whatman 2, T Ryley, A Greenwood tries; B Roberts 6 goals; Roberts field goal) defeated Woden Valley Rams 32 (M Geiger 2, G House, T Crome, M Gilmour, R Leapai tries; Crome 4 goals)

Queanbeyan Blues 28 (L Branighan, M Cullen, J Martin, T Stevens, A Tulolo, J Ulrick tries; E Malu 2 goals) defeated Belconnen United Sharks 10 (K Sione, S Tupuola tries; D Eason goal)

Tuggeranong Bushrangers 48 (Z Mitchell 2, M Lyons, N Close, J Pouono, M Brophy, J Hammond, J Thomas, A Topou tries; Q Cannon 5, J Hammond goals) defeated Yass Magpies 14 (T Gavenlock, A Swaffield, T Williams tries; Gavenlock goal)

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 38 (T Williams 2, B Crisp, A Pearce, K Parsons tries, B Crisp 5 goals) defeated Goulburn Bulldogs 20 (M Picker, C Medway, M Worboys, P Cooke tries, B Picker 2 goals)

Womens' U18s representative match: Canberra 16 (J Ottaway 2, L Samoa tries; Ottaway 2 goals) defeated Ilawarra 8 (C Smith, V Fauvai tries)

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Preview

With the Canberra Raiders meeting the New Zealand Warriors in three matches on Saturday, most of the action in Canberra Raiders Cup will take place on Sunday in Round 14.

There are just five rounds left before the finals, and it looks like the top six clubs are those that are still in the running.

In what is shaping as a close battle, the fifth placed Woden Valley Rams meet the sixth placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers at Greenway on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams had a narrow loss to West Belconnen Warriors last weekend, in a high scoring match, while the Bushrangers recorded a very big win over the Yass Magpies.

Both teams will be desperate for a win, so as to stay in touch with the top four and maintain a chance at the finals.

In particular, if the Bushrangers lose, they could be as much as seven competition points adrift of the fourth placed Gungahlin Bulls

In other matches on Sunday, the ladder leading Queanbeyan Kangaroos will be aiming at their 11th win in a row when they meet the Belconnen United Sharks at Freebody Oval. It will be a very big upset if the Sharks can stop the Roos in their current form. The Gungahlin Bulls will be wanting to secure their place in the top four when they meet the Goulburn Bulldogs at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval. The Bulldogs secured just their second win of the year when they defeated the Yass Magpies mid week, in a catch up fixture. It'll be tough for them to back up and get a victory over the fourth placed Bulls.

On Saturday, the Yass Magpies will meet the Queanbeyan Blues at Walker Park. The third placed Blues have been returning to form in recent weeks, and it'll be difficult for the Magpies to topple them.

The Greenhouse will be covering the Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Woden Valley Rams on Sunday, with live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter and half and full time scores here in this thread.

Saturday 23 July
Yass Magpies V Queanbeyan Blues, Walker Park, Yass 3:00pm

Sunday 24 July
Gungahlin Bulls V Goulburn Bulldogs, Jamison, 3:00pm
Tuggeranong Bushrangers V Woden Valley Rams, Greenway, 3.00pm

Canberra Raiders Cup: Tuggeranong Bushrangers without star duo for Woden Valley Rams clash

It's a virtual elimination final for both sides and Tuggeranong will have to get the job done without key players Matthew Lyons and Quinlyn Cannon against Woden Valley on Sunday.

"It's a definite task. I'm expecting a pretty tough one to be honest," Bushrangers coach Peter Laurent said. "If we don't win this weekend we can kiss the season goodbye. It's a tough ask to make the finals ... it's a pretty good competition," he said.

"We had some realistic goals and I think we've achieved some of those."

Canberra Raiders Cup: Queanbeyan Blues remain in hunt for minor premiership with 32-0 win over Yass Magpies

The standalone Canberra Raiders Cup game on Saturday was a one-sided affair, with the Queanbeyan Blues running away with a 32-0 win over Yass Magpies.

"It was cold and wet and the ground had a lot of water on it, so to come away with a 32-0 score line was pretty pleasing," Blues coach Simon Woolford said.

"We need to keep winning. There's obviously three teams that keep winning, and it's important to give ourselves a chance to finish in the top two," he said.

Queanbeyan Blues 32 (L Branighan, E Malu, J Martin, A Misios, J Wheeler, I Ngata tries; J Baker 3, E Malu goals) bt Yass Magpies 0.

Sunday: Tuggeranong Bushrangers v Woden Valley Rams, at Greenway; Gungahlin Bulls v Goulburn Bulldogs, at Jamison Enclosed Oval; Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Belconnen United, at Freebody Oval. All games 2pm.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Woden Valley Rams not sheepish about semi-finals hope after Tuggeranong win

The Woden Valley Rams are confident they will be more than just nuisance value if they can squeeze into the Canberra Raiders Cup finals after ending Tuggeranong's hopes with a 30-12 win on Sunday.

"If we do make the finals we're going to put the foot to the throat, we just have to get there," half Grant Crapp said.

"The next three weeks are going to be tough. Every game from now on we're trying to win and next week we've got [defending premiers Queanbeyan] Blues.

Another name looks familiar there, will need to do some more research before commenting.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 14 Wrap up

Image

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers concede that it will be too difficult to make the Canberra Raiders Cup finals after defeat at the hands of the Woden Valley Rams on Sunday afternoon at Greenway.

The match pitted the teams in fifth and sixth, but the 30-12 loss for the Bushies means that they are now seven competition points adrift of the fourth placed Gunghalin Bulls. The Rams are still three competition points away from a top four spot.

The wet weather led to most sporting grounds being closed in the ACT on the weekend, with only the first grade Canberra Raiders Cup matches proceeding in Round 14.

Biting winds and overcast skies meant that there was a small crowd at Greenway, with the apparent temperature at around 1.5C just before kick off. It was a rugged first half, with the teams going to the half time break at 6-6.

But in the second half, the Rams found more attacking rhythm. In the 45th minute, half Grant Crapp showed some great acceleration, running through a huge gap for a four pointer. That was followed by a try to winger Liam Murphy in the corner in the 54th minute, giving the visitors a 16-6 advantage.

The Bushrangers replied just a few minutes later with a try to former Raider Michael Brophy. But the Rams pressed on with three tries in the final 20 minutes, including one that resulted from a sensational, bumping run from Ron Leapai.

In other matches, the Queanbeyan Blues piled on 32 points at Walker Park, Yass on Saturday to defeat a Magpies side that has won just twice this season.

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos continued on their winning streak, scoring seven tries at Freebody, to defeat the Belconnen United Sharks 44-22. That's now 11 victories in a row for the west Queanbeyan team.

And the Gungahlin Bulls made their top four spot safer, with a 38-16 win at Jamison. Bulls games transferred from Gungahlin until the damaged playing surface is again fit for play. Former Raiders Drury Low and David Howell both scored doubles for the Bulls, while former Raiders Joe and Ben Picker scored all the points for the Bulldogs.

Queanbeyan Blues 32 (L Branighan, E Malu, J Martin, A Misios, J Wheeler, I Ngata tries; J Baker 3, E Malu goals) defeated Yass Magpies 0 at Walker Park

Woden Valley Rams 30 (L Murphy 2, J Taws, G Crapp, M Gilmour, R Leapai tries; T Crome 3 goals) defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 12 (M Brophy, B Neil tries; Zac Mitchell 2 goals) at Greenway

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 15 Preview

With four rounds to go, there are now just five teams fighting out for the Canberra Raiders Cup finals.

The fifth placed Woden Valley Rams kept themselves in the running last weekend, with a win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers, and now face the third placed Queanbeyan Blues.

It is another must win for the Rams, as they are still three competition points adrift of the fourth placed Gungahlin Bulls.

The Queanbeyan Blues stuttered in the middle of the season, but have been getting back to form as the finals approach. The Blues had a big 32-0 win over the Yass Magpies at Walker Park last Saturday. They'll be a tough opponent for the Rams at Queanbeyan.

The Greenhouse will be at Seiffert for this match, with live scores via @CanberraCup on Twitter, with half and full time scores right here.

In other matches, the Queanbeyan Kangaroos meet Yass at Freebody Oval and it will likely be a tough day at the office for the Magpies. Yass has won just twice this season, while the Roos are aiming for their 12th win in a row and lead the competition.

At O'Connor, the Belconnen United Sharks face the Gungahlin Bulls. The Bulls have been solid performers and have more reason to win - protecting their top four placing - than the last placed Sharks. And the second placed West Belconnen Warriors, who are fresh off the bye, will be wanting to avoid any trip up up against the Bushies at Kippax.
