Canberra Raiders Cup: Late West Belconnen Warriors try sinks Gungahlin Bulls in derby

West Belconnen coach Troy Thompson played 64 NRL games alongside Gungahlin mentor Lincoln Withers, and co-coached the Bulls just last year, but it certainly didn't make Saturday's Canberra Raiders Cup victory over his good mate any sweeter.

Tevita Aroha swooped on a bouncing ball with two minutes remaining to snatch West Belconnen a 26-24 victory in a heated clash with arch-rivals Gungahlin, but Thompson was quick to put a dampener on the occasion.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 9 Wrap-up

In the match of the round, a try to Tevita Aroha with two minutes remaining clinched a thrilling win for the Warriors over the Bulls.

"It was pleasing, but we've still got a lot to work on. The Bulls probably deserved to win that, they played really well," Warriors coach Troy Thompson said.

"It was probably a tale of two halves again. We were a bit ordinary in the first half, and they were ordinary in the second half. It was good to get a win, but we've got a lot of work to do."

Queanbeyan Blues and Kangaroos ready for Canberra Raiders Cup rivalry

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos believe they are better placed to tackle rivals the Queanbeyan Blues as they seek redemption for a Round 1 56-0 thumping.

"It has been a bit disruptive in the last two-three weeks with all the rain and not being able to train, but when we have trained it's just been business as usual," Roos Captain Brent Crisp said.

"Every win is important, it's no different to last week's win or the weeks after that but I think for the club itself the win would probably be more important given the cross-town rivalry and the Queanbeyan derby.

Gungahlin Bulls' junior Daniel Keir set to return after Canberra Raiders under-20s call up

Gungahlin Bulls forward Daniel Keir played his first game for the Raiders under-20s against the Brisbane Broncos three weeks ago.

"I want to develop more as a player and build on for the next couple of years," Keir said.

Keir will return to the Bulls team on Saturday to play the second-place Queanbeyan Blues, who will be seeking redemption after losing to cross-town rivals the Queanbeyan Kangaroos last weekend.

Queanbeyan Blues and Gungahlin Bulls fight out first Canberra Raiders Cup draw

Gungahlin Bulls fought out a 20 all draw with Queanbeyan Blues today. Across town, Woden Valley Rams were far too good for the Yass Magpies to win 48-10 at Phillip.

"We needed to keep winning, if we dropped one it would've put us a little bit further than what we liked behind the top four," Woden coach Ashley Barnes said.

"That's definitely been our goal all year [to make the top four]. We've got Westies after the bye, which is going to be a big one and let us know where we are in the competition.

Woden Valley Rams 48 (J Taws 2, G House 2, M Gilmour 2, L Ellis, J Pheeney, R Leapai tries; T Crome 6 goals) bt Yass Magpies 10 (J Hall, A Swaffield tries; D Brown goal)

Adam Pearce has barged through defensive lines this season for the Queanbeyan Kangaroos and has amassed nine tries, while his Woden Valley counterpart Michael Gilmour has scored five in the last two games.
