THE introduction of an NRL shot clock next season will take its most significant step with two matches set to trial the technology this weekend.

Time limits will be placed on scrums and dropouts during the under-20s Holden Cup competition between Cronulla and the Wests Tigers on Saturday and Gold Coast and Canberra on Sunday.

NYC Match Preview: Raiders v Titans

The Canberra Raiders Holden Cup side is sitting precariously at 6th position heading into the last three rounds of the season but if the team can move on from a tough couple of weeks a finals berth is waiting for the young Green Machine, and if they do, coach Mick Mantelli believes they can go deep into the finals this year.

“It’s been a long season for the boys, we have a lot of young kids that are just learning to play at this level so we are working on their defensive principles and technique,” Mantelli said. “We just need to keep working.

“I think we’re a pretty good chance at winning the last three games and when it comes to the Panthers we just need to compete against them.

“We just need to get into a grind with them, which is probably something most teams haven’t done so far this season. We should get into a tussle with them and see how good we are.”

Shot clock to be trialed in Canberra Raiders Holden Cup clash

The Queensland heat always takes some adapting to for the Canberra Raiders, and their under-20s team may find it even tougher given the NRL will trial its shot clock during Sunday's clash with Gold Coast. The teams will have 35 seconds to pack a scrum and 30 seconds to kick dropouts as the NRL test drives the rules changes it will introduce next year in order to reduce time-wasting and create more player fatigue.

Don't seem to be taken chances with the ball like raiders usually do, can't grind out a win 22 points down.. Raiders come out in 2nd half and have some fun.. Raiders win 30 to 28
