If you're interested, keep an eye on the Cowboys 14 Kalyn Ponga. He has been something of a child prodigy. Represented 15 years QLD schoolboys as a 14 year old (making the Australian merit team when 14 and 15) and made 18 years QLD schoolboys as a 16 year old. He's 17 this year but played limited footy, as he had a brain tumor removed, ruling him out for most of the season. Here is an article from last year announcing his signing with the Cowboys:

http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/nrl ... 6793242207

There's also a YouTube video of his Rugby Union highlights playing for the First 15 at a pretty prestigious Brisbane school (as a 16 year old). Certainly one to keep an eye on.

Good to see Cleveland McGhie was cleared of any serious injury after last week and is fit to play.

Not sure about Tre Williams at fullback at this level yet, he looked a bit overawed there last week. And he's small compared to other players in the grade too.

I think Tre is a fair bit smaller than Slater at this stage.

Williams definitely needs to be given a bit more time before judgement. That game last week is one of the biggest mismatches I've ever seen. Most fullbacks would have been made look ordinary in such a flogging.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.

NYC Match Preview: Raiders v Cowboys

The Canberra Raiders Holden Cup side were handed a thrashing by the top of the table Penrith Panthers last weekend, and their job won’t get any easier this weekend up in Townsville against the second placed North Queensland Cowboys.

“It’s going to be a challenge for us but I think the boys are up for it to redeem ourselves for last weekend,” NYC forward Brett Soloman said.

“Obviously facing the Cowboys, they’re going to want to come through our middle again so it will be a big game for myself and the other forwards. If we manage to beat their forwards and give our backs some space we can win.”

We’ve been working on our defence all year, but last week let us down so defence is going to be a key focus point this week.”

That's an awful lot of changes for the Raiders. At least they're showing how versatile they are with respect to positions... Parsons makes his debut.

busted his butt down to 20's for trying to get away lol. Thats a shame, I would have liked to see him get more reggies time.... he's physically there, I would have thought spending time at mounties with blokes who are busting their arses to get into firsts would have shown him the attitude required.

Relax guys, we have changed our recruitment strategy now. We are buying talent from other clubs now, remember. If we keep producing youth and development teams like the one that trotted out today,Brisbane and other evil clubs can't pilfer our stocks, as we have none. It's a win for us! :D

The Raiders are 5th on the table in the NYC. That sort of scoreline is precisely why the U20's has no future as our 2nd tier competition.

With a few key injuries these boys are out of their depth. It will basically be the same squad next season, so they may go OK next year, but right now they are clearly struggling.

Some clubs are putting 17 year olds in, so no wonder if they meet the 20 year olds.

It's been a great comp, but the clubs have done their best to kill it. We will end with a single team. No doubt what the clubs want.

The concept of requiring junior players to get a trade or tertiary education while they are developing in the system is a really good one. So is having a salary cap for players at that level.

The concept of making an under 20's competition your second tier is fundamentally flawed.

As I've said a mirror reserve grade comp would be more beneficial than the 20's

We're not going to get one. I can see us having just one game at Canberra Stadium every week, as the Raiders have said they won't have thir own team, but will continue with Mounties.
