NYC Match Preview: Raiders v Eels

“We’ll get better mate.” That was the simple message that Mick Mantelli had after his side suffered their second heavy defeat to the New Zealand Warriors on Sunday afternoon.

It was a tough game for our boys who struggled defensively against a much bigger outfit, short on troops already due to injuries they lost their most influential forward Scott Doyle before half time and it was never going to be an easy task from there.

Coach Mick Mantelli will welcome back the injured duo of Jules Webley and Jared McIlwrick this week.

Webley will return at lock and McIlwrick will start in the second-row in place of Scott Doyle who has had his welfare placed first after a sickening head collision with New Zealand fullback Brad Abbey’s knee.

MATCH REPORT: Holden Cup Parramatta Eels overpower Canberra Raiders

Canberra has succumbed to a 54-26 loss to second placed Parramatta, although Coach Mick Mantelli has been heartened by the tremendous spirit shown by his side.

With the team struck down by several injuries coupled with the absence of star trio Luke Bateman, Andrew Heffernan and Patrick Mago, who were all selected to play for either Mounties or Souths Logan, the Raiders were always going to be facing an uphill battle against the Eels.

Parramatta are ranked as the second best attacking team in the competition and were in dangerous form having won three out of their last four encounters. The side is also littered with various junior representative stars including NSW Under 20’s players Ryan Matterson and Kaysa Pritchard.

“The Eels came out firing from the kick-off and raced ahead to an 18-0 lead early on which was disappointing,” Coach Mick Mantelli said.
