Five Toowoomba clubs benefit from funding
RAISING funds to run community sports clubs gets harder every year but thanks to the generosity of the Toowoomba Sports Club, five local bodies have been given a significant leg-up.
The Toowoomba Sports Club has granted $100,000 to be shared between its five member clubs in the Toowoomba Basketball Association, Norths Hockey Club and Toowoomba rugby league clubs Valleys, Souths and Brothers.
Toowoomba Valleys club manager Gary de Joux paid tribute to Toowoomba Sports Club general manager Karen Evans for the club's continued support of local organisations.
Evans moved to Toowoomba when her employer, the Canberra Raiders, took over the Toowoomba Sports Club after it went into receivership a decade ago.
The club was born from a joint venture of the five member clubs in the early 1990s but the business got into trouble after expansion in the early 2000s.
However, under Evans' stewardship the Sports Club has traded out of trouble and last year made a profit of more than $1 million.
