Raiders son of a gun to debut for Queanbeyan Blues

His father is coach and one of the Canberra Raiders' best-ever hookers, but Simon Woolford insists his son Zac is ready to forge his own reputation when he makes his first grade debut for Queanbeyan Blues on Sunday.

A spate of injuries has opened the door for the 18-year-old - who played SG Ball for the Raiders this year - to start in the No.9 jersey against Tuggeranong at Seiffert Oval.

"He's always going to get that and be under the microscope, I suppose. It's his determination and work ethic which has got him there,'' Woolford said. "Whatever he achieves is certainly on merit, that's for sure.''

Queanbeyan Blues fired up by new halves

QUEANBEYAN Blues utility Ben Nicoll is looking forward to the second half of the Canberra Raiders Cup competition in a new-look halves pairing with young gun Tom Leddy for at least another two weeks.

With regular halves in former Canberra Raider Marc Herbert and Andrew McLean battling ankle and bicep injuries respectively, Nicoll will partner Leddy in the halves during a period he believes will be good for his men.

"We've had a lot of injuries this season, but a lot of the boys are starting to come back now, so we've pulled through the tough times and we're in a pretty good spot," he said.

"Forwards Levi Freeman and Michael Cullen are some of the best forwards in the comp, and they're back now so we need to back that up."

Queanbeyan Kangaroos need to finish off games: Jordan Macey

IT is time for the Queanbeyan Kangaroos to start stringing together 80 minute efforts heading into the second half of the Canberra Raiders Cup season according to half Jordan Macey as his men return from a three week break on Sunday.

"We've been playing good footy in patches, but there's times where we've just been switching off, and that's probably why Goz [coach Aaron Gorrell] has been a bit angry with us lately," he said.

The men in maroon and white take on the West Belconnen Warriors at Freebody Oval, but what would have been an easy win for the Kangaroos in the past two seasons is no longer the case with the Warriors a much improved outfit in 2014.

West Belconnen ends Queanbeyan Roos unbeaten run in Canberra Raiders Cup upset

When new West Belconnen coach Justin Giteau declared he was ''very confident'' they would make the finals after going winless last year, it was dismissed as a throwaway line.

But the Warriors have arrived as legitimate contenders after ending defending premiers Queanbeyan Kangaroos' unbeaten run with a 22-14 upset at Freebody Oval on Saturday.

In other results on Saturday, Tuggeranong dropped out of the top four after a 28-6 loss to the Blues, while Belconnen United registered their first win of the year by shocking Gungahlin 26-6. Goulburn host Woden Valley on Sunday at Goulburn Workers Arena.

Goulburn beats a spirited Woden Valley in Canberra Raiders Cup

Late tries to Matt Worboys and Mitch Turner helped Goulburn cement a Canberra Raiders Cup top-four spot with a 33-24 home win over Woden Valley on Sunday.

"We've just had two weeks off so it's good to get a win today after some time off to get some injuries right,'' Goulburn player-coach Mick Picker said.

Connors makes Country

Dwayne Connors has been selected in the Country Firsts rugby league side to tour Hawaii next month.

The Yass Magpies junior has been in scintillating club form as fullback for Raiders Cup side the Gungahlin Bulls and his captain-coach Josh Ayers made sure it wasn't going unnoticed.

"Josh Ayers mentioned me to the [Canberra Region] rep coach Jack Giddings and he asked me to come to training and see how I go," Connors explained.

He obviously impressed at training because he was quickly thrust into the action as a starting winger in the knockout semi-final against Newcastle.

Queanbeyan Blues overtake Roos to threaten Canberra Raiders Cup

THE Queanbeyan Blues have fired right back up to Canberra Raiders Cup title contention after destroying the Tuggeranong Bushrangers 28-6 last Saturday and having cross-town rivals the Kangaroos suffer their first loss.

East-Queanbeyan's heralded rugby league venture momentarily took first place for the first time this season, before the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs beat Woden Valley Rams on Sunday to go nine points differential on top.

"It pays credit to the young guys that have spent a lot of time coming through. Tom Leddy has been absolutely outstanding for us, Ben Nicoll has stood up, and Tevian Arona has has done his job off the bench," said coach Simon Woolford.

"It's all about making the 17 guys and the coaches accountable...our goal is to make sure we improve and when the game's a cracker we're on top," said Woolford.

Bulldogs eye top of the table bragging rights

THE Goulburn Bulldogs are now riding high in the Canberra Raiders Cup, but it doesn’t get any easier with a top of the table clash against the Queanbeyan Blues tomorrow.

Captain / coach Mick Picker said: “Even though we won [against Woden], we were rusty and we know that.”

“We just have to do better against the Blues, just complete our sets because I think we threw it around a bit too much last week.”

“At this stage of the season we have a good idea of who the form teams are. And it’s good to be sitting on top of the table but it means nothing if we drop the bundle now.”

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 8 Preview

Belconnen United Scholars (8) v West Belconnen Warriors (4) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Northbourne Oval

In what is traditionally a fiercely fought affair, local rivals Belconnen United and West Belconnen will head into this encounter with a fresh injection of confidence after the two combatants registered terrific results in Round 7.

After a forgettable 2013 campaign in which they finished with the dreaded wooden spoon, West Belconnen became the first side this year to defeat the defending premiers the Queanbeyan Kangaroos.

“The win last weekend over the Roos has really lifted our confidence,” Warriors hooker Nic Whatman said. “They were undefeated and are a really tough side so it gives us a lot of confidence knowing that we can not only match it with them, but beat them.

“We’re in the top four now and that’s where we want to stay. It’s a really tight comp and you can’t afford to lose too many games so it is imperative that we turn up every week.”

Gungahlin Bulls (6) v Tuggeranong Bushrangers (5) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Gungahlin Town Centre Oval
Queanbeyan Blues (2) v Goulburn Workers Bulldogs (1) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Seiffert Oval
Woden Valley Rams (7) v Queanbeyan Kangaroos (3) on Sunday at 3:00pm at Phillip District Oval

Queanbeyan Blues edge out Goulburn in slogfest

Queanbeyan Blues coach Simon Woolford praised his side's toughness and grit in difficult conditions in a 22-12 top-of-the-table victory over Goulburn at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.

Playing in driving rain and on a boggy surface, the Blues' greater size eventually told against a Goulburn outfit undermanned up front through injury.

"It was one of those games where one team had to win ugly,'' he said. "I challenged the boys before the game that we've shown in the past we can play some footy at times [and] today was the time to show how tough we can play.

"I couldn't have asked for them to play any tougher than they did. Goulburn played real tough as well and hung in; we just had a bit more size and legs and that's what told in the end.''

Queanbeyan Roos hold off fast-finishing Woden Valley in Canberra Raiders Cup

Queanbeyan Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell has urged his side to become more ruthless after it nearly let a massive 26-0 half-time lead slip in a 30-28 win over Woden Valley Rams at Phillip Oval on Sunday.

A try with two minutes left got the hosts to within two points with three minutes left, but they fell just short of a huge upset.

"I keep saying we're not playing well enough and we're dodging bullets but we are. Today was a perfect example. Next week's a good test, the boys are excited about it and we've been lifting our games when we need to.''

QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 30 (Jed Pearce, Fonua Tonga, Jordan Macey, Luke Jones, Troy Whiley, Sione Afemui tries; Macey 3 goals) bt WODEN VALLEY RAMS 28 (Ben Maguire, Jordan Martin, Luke Johnson, Brad Martin, Charlie Hallam tries; Jeff Morgan 4 goals).

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 8 Wrap Up

Woden has gone painstakingly close to upsetting defending premiers the Queanbeyan Kangaroos after nearly turning around a 26-0 deficit to lose 30-28 at home.

“We're lifting for the good sides and staying at the bottom sides' standards, and it's frustrating,” Roos coach Aaron Gorrell said. “I keep saying we're not playing well enough and we're dodging bullets but we are. Today was a perfect example.”

“Our turnover rate and unforced errors are terrible,” Rams coach Cameron Hardy said. “You can't give a team like the Roos that much ball and not expect to get caned for it.

“It's the tale of our season, we keep coming alive in the last 15 or 20 minutes, and we can't keep doing it. The boys themselves said straight afterward, we have to be in the contest earlier.”

Queanbeyan Kangaroos 30 (Jordan Macey, Jed Pearce, Fonua Tonga, Luke Jones, Troy Whiley, Sione Afemui tries; Jordan Macey 3 goals) defeated Woden Valley Rams 28 (Ben Maguire, Jordan Martin, Luke Johnson, Brad Martin, Charlie Hallam tries; Jeff Morgan 4 goals)

West Belconnen Warriors 22 (Scott Jones, Dayne Ewings, Tim Sloman, Tevita Aroha-Tuinauvai tries; Scott Jones 3 goals) defeated Belconnen United Scholars 8 (Chris Faaee 2 tries)

Gungahlin Bulls 30 (James Ulrick 2, Nathan Corby 2, Brad Wood, Dwayne Connors tries; Dwayne Connors 3 goals) defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 16 (Sam Blayden, Mitch McAppion, Ilija Cotric tries; Pete DeMamiel 2 goals)

Queanbeyan Blues 22 (Tom Ruediger, Leu Saipani, Tom Leddy tries; Levi Freeman 5 goals) defeated Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 12 (Tim Turner, Nathan Chappell tries; Ben Picker 2 goals)

Refs under fire

BULLDOGS captain/coach Michael Picker has slammed the standard of refereeing of the Canberra Raiders Cup as “not good enough.”

“For the level that the Canberra Raiders Cup is, the standard of refereeing is substandard,” Picker told the Post on Sunday.

“It’s just not good enough and something needs to be done.”

Canberra Region Refereeing Association director Peter Castle denied there was a problem, saying he was surprised by the allegations.

More referees with their heads up their arses so they can't see the problems ?

What hope has the NRL got if the regional areas can't get it right either.

And you wonder why there are no good referees. Who would want to be one when you get physically and verbally abused by people at all levels. Kids see parents at the games swearing and abusing ref's and think it's normal and do it on the playing field as kids and then as future NRL players..

90 percent of the time it's the teams fault they couldn't win anyway. Sure a decision or two might have swung against them but what about the decisions that they got swing to them.

At the end of the day they are only human and are going to make mistakes, maybe if a bit more respect was shown to them we would get more people wanting to be refs and a larger pool of refs to choose from.

Queanbeyan Kangaroos call youth upon injury crisis

THE Queanbeyan Kangaroos are set to go at least a month without some of their regular players after the Woden Valley Rams inflicted an injury crisis at Phillip District Oval last Sunday.

It comes as the west-Queanbeyan side prepares to take on arch rival the Queanbeyan Blues in the second instalment of Queanbeyan's ultimate rugby league contest on Saturday at Freebody Oval.

As many as seven regular first-graders could be out for the Kangaroos, coming off a tough 30-28 win against the Woden Valley Rams where they found themselves down to just 14 fit men.

Forward Matt Lewis went under the knife on Monday after suffering a broken jaw against the Rams, while Adam Pearce, Troy Whiley, Josh Baker, Richard Kelly, Robbie Byatt and Aidan Woods all suffered injuries too.

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 9 Preview

Queanbeyan Kangaroos (2) v Queanbeyan Blues (1) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Freebody Oval

A Grand Final rematch, a fierce local rivalry, a top of the table clash and the fact that both sides coached by two former NRL hookers who are still as competitive as ever. Where else would you rather be on a Saturday afternoon than Freebody Oval?

"The Roos have beaten us in the last three times we've played them so we're ready for a big game," Blues forward Trevor Thurling said.

"There's a great rivalry between the two sides and they're always fiery matches no matter where we are on the ladder."

Woden Valley Rams (7) v Tuggeranong Bushrangers (6) on Saturday at 3:00pm at Phillip District Oval
Goulburn Workers Bulldogs (4) v Belconnen United Scholars (8) on Sunday at 3:00pm at Goulburn Workers Arena

Former Canberra Raider Trevor Thurling giving back to troubled youth

He has lived the NRL high life but former Canberra Raiders forward Trevor Thurling says his new life helping neglected and abused children is far more rewarding.

Thurling, who played 99 games for the Raiders, is now a residential youth worker for Richmond Fellowship in Canberra, an organisation which assists the disadvantaged.

"We look after these kids who have trauma-based behaviours, try and give them a positive outlook on life and lead them in the right direction,'' Thurling said.

"We try and keep them motivated, it's easy when they think a lot of things aren't going their way to slip and let their behaviour get in the way of everyday life.

Tom Ruediger stars for Queanbeyan Blues in local derby win

After yet another ankle injury early last season, Tom Ruediger was done with football.

But he owes his family and friends for convincing him not to hang up the boots after making a successful switch back to rugby league with Queanbeyan Blues.

The right centre scored two tries and was devastating in a 30-24 win over Queanbeyan Kangaroos in the grand final re-match on Saturday.

"I had a bad run with injury and sat out last year, but a few guys I grew up with said come and have another go at league,'' Ruediger said.

In Saturday's other match Woden was too strong for Tuggeranong 33-18.

Canberra Raiders Cup contender West Belconnen defies the odds

West Belconnen Warriors continued their resurgence from laughing stock to heavyweight with a 42-24 win over Gungahlin on Sunday.

Having lost every game last year by an average of over 37 points, the Warriors are now second on the table and have proved themselves as Canberra Raiders Cup premiership contenders.

Halfback Bobby Roberts, who moved to the club this year from Belconnen United, said they have the belief they can go all the way.

"I have no doubt we can, but I still think the Queanbeyan sides are the benchmark,'' he said.

West Belconnen 42 (Dayne Ewing 2, Ricky Fulivai 2, Ryan McQueen, Naseri Naseri, Scott Jones, Oliver Powell tries; Jones 5 goals) bt Gungahlin Bulls 24 ( Hayden Pengilly, Dwayne Connors, David Howell, Lincoln Withers tries; Connors 4 goals)

Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 48 (Michael Bani 2, Nathan Chappell 2, Ben Picker 2, Codie Medway, Michael Picker, Jason Wells, B Picker 6 goals) bt Belconnen United Scholars 18 (Dan Papali'i Scanlan, Mitchell Shaw, Ryan Jackson tries; Lachlan Sund 3 goals)

Saturday's results: Queanbeyan Blues 30 bt Queanbeyan Kangaroos 24; Woden Valley 33 bt Tuggeranong 18

Canberra Raiders Cup: Round 9 Wrap Up

The Queanbeyan Blues have extracted revenge for the Round 2 loss to local rivals the Queanbeyan Kangaroos however the pain of last year’s Grand Final loss continues to fuel their push towards this year’s title.

The six point win has now given the Blues the outright lead on the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup ladder after nine rounds.

In what was a come-from-behind victory, the Blues trailed 18-4 after the Roos were able to cross for three tries down their rival’s left hand edge.

“Tom [Ruediger]'s just class, he's a freak,” Blues Coach Simon Woolford said. “He's a very smart kid, defensively he comes up with the right play nine times out of 10, and has speed and raw ability.”

Queanbeyan Blues 30 (Tom Ruediger 2, Tyler Stevens, Leu Saipani, Levi Freeman tries; Levi Freeman 5 goals) defeated Queanbeyan Kangaroos 24

Woden Valley Rams 33 (Tim Crome 2, Jordan Martin, Jeff Morgan, Josh Burns, Adam Kyle tries; Tim Crome 4 goals, 1 field goal) defeated Tuggeranong Bushrangers 18 (Mitch McAppion 2, Nathan Miles tries; Carl Johnson 3 goals)

West Belconnen 42 (Dayne Ewing 2, Ricky Fulivai 2, Ryan McQueen, Naseri Naseri, Scott Jones, Oliver Powell tries; Jones 5 goals) defeated Gungahlin Bulls 24 ( Hayden Pengilly, Dwayne Connors, David Howell, Lincoln Withers tries; Connors 4 goals);

Goulburn Workers Bulldogs 48 (Michael Bani 2, Nathan Chappell 2, Ben Picker 2, Codie Medway, Michael Picker, Jason Wells, B Picker 6 goals) defeated Belconnen United Scholars 18 (Dan Papali'i Scanlan, Mitchell Shaw, Ryan Jackson tries; Lachlan Sund 3 goals).

Queanbeyan Kangaroos can still bounce back: Whiley

THE Queanbeyan Kangaroos can still pose a threat during the finals series despite hanging on to the top four by the thread of a needle in the Canberra Raiders Cup.

This is the word of skipper Troy Whiley, who believes his side proved they can cover the loss of seven regular first grade players after they lost by just six points, 30-24, to the Queanbeyan Blues last Saturday.

It was the first back-to-back loss for the Kangaroos in an incredible three years, and continued the tradition of each Queanbeyan club having one win each in the local derby in a single season.

"Whichever side we put on the field, we'll definitely be competitive, and still have a good chance," he said. "All that has changed is our personnel, but our game plans will not change at all."

A HALF-TIME talk down from Mick Picker has seen the Goulburn workers Bulldogs run over the Belconnen Scholars 48-18 at the Workers Arena on Sunday.

“I told the boys at half time that we needed to stop relying on individual performances and to work on our try line defence,” he said. “Also to have a bit of patience.”

Gungahlin Bulls coach backs Lincoln Withers to step up in ''must win'' game

Gungahlin coach Michael Slater has backed star halfback Lincoln Withers to find his best form this week, branding Saturday's clash with Goulburn a ''must win'' to keep their finals hopes alive.

"We have to win this weekend. There's no ifs, buts or maybes,'' Slater said.

"Linc's only had three games with us and he hadn't played for nearly 12 months, it was always going to take him a couple of games.

"Realistically, the next two weeks we'll see the best out of Lincoln.''
