2013 Canberra Raiders junior representatives

Post by greeneyed »

League's calling

SELECTION in the Raiders ranks wasn’t a fluke.

Young footballers Chris Hart, Steve Cummins, Matthew Sherer and Lachlan Croker already work more hours than most adults.

On top of spending 32 hours a week at school, the teenagers are preoccupied with training three nights a night and must then tackle the arduous task of homework.

It’s not unusual for them to return home from Canberra post-training at 9pm.

Now, it seems, their hard work is paying off. Hart and Croker are part of the Raiders SG Ball squad and Sherer and Cummins members of Canberra’s under 16s Harold Matthews Cup outfit.

With the exception of Hart, sidelined through injury, each begin their season on Saturday.

For the next 12 weeks, they’ll lace up their boots, slip on the Raiders jersey and tear in. Then, when the season closes, they’ll exchange the Raiders jumpers for that of the Workers Bulldogs and Stockmen.

While their mates off the field and spend hours a week in each other’s company, Croker and Hart have a rivalry of sorts – they both play the same position.

Croker will occupy the fullback spot in the Raiders clash with the Greater Western Sydney Academy.

Hart is likely to return to fullback when fit though Croker, a handy utility, will remain in the team.

Their young school mates, meantime, hope to forge a reputation in the game. Sherer, a prop, and Cummins, a fullback and winger, on Saturday play their first matches in Raiders colours.

Connor Brebner makes Raiders squad

Local lad and Grenfell Junior League under 16 Connor Brebner has been selected to represent  the Canberra Raiders this year in the Harold Mathews under 16’s summer competition beginning on February 9.

Connor has been playing rugby league since the under 6’s, played in Lachlan District Representative for three years running and is a vital part of his team in Grenfell Junior League.

Spotted by a scout at Representative Football in Dubbo, Connor  was approached in September 2012 and asked to trial with the Canberra Raiders.

With approximately 200 under 16’s vying for a spot on either the Canberra or Country squad, Connor was among 40 players chosen for the Canberra Raiders squad.

This team was made up of players from Canberra, Goulburn, Crookwell, Temora, Tathra and New Zealand.

Since his selection in the first 40 chosen, Connor has been attending training twice a week in Canberra as well as following a comprehensive fitness programme as part of his training.

Training for the squad began in October 2012, and in that time, Connor has since played in two trial games against West Tigers and Cronulla Sharks, with his skills on the field on display.

The final squad was announced on Monday January 21, with Connor and Grant Hughes from the Temora Dragons both making the team. Proud parents Cindy and Jarrod Brebner  and brother Declan, will continue to travel to Canberra twice a week for Connor to train and  weekends will be spent travelling to the games the Raiders squad will play against all other NRL Harold Mathews teams.

Grenfell Junior League would like to congratulate Connor on this fantastic achievement. Connor has trained hard for many months and his dedication, perseverance and success will place him as a great role model for the younger players coming through, so they can see if they want it enough and they work hard enough they can do it too. We wish Connor the best of luck for the Harold Mathews Season and look forward to him coming back to play out the rest of the year with Grenfell under 16’s.

Junior Reps Preview – Round 1 v Western Sydney Academy

The NSWRL junior representative competitions kick off this weekend with both of the Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews (Under 16s) and SG Ball (Under 18s) taking on Western Sydney Academy on Saturday at St Mary’s. After making the Grand Final in 2012, SG Ball Coach Peter Marrapodi is anticipating another successful season in the under 18s competition despite the addition of many fresh faces into this year’s squad. “It’s a totally new group of players and they are looking to be successful in their own right,” Marropodi said.“The benefit of our experiences from last year is that we know what it takes to win a premiership and how much hard work and discipline goes into it. I’m not feeling any added pressure after coming off a pretty good year last season, I’m just excited at the upcoming challenge.”

Not great results those. The WSA is pretty much made up of players who dont make the NRL aligned teams in Western Sydney.

Canberra Raiders junior representatives start the season with one win, one loss

The Canberra Raiders SG Ball side kicked their season off to a great start with a hard-fought 24-12 victory over Western Sydney Academy (WSAS). After trailing 12-0 at the break, a double to Captain Luke Bateman and a half-time grilling from Coach Peter Marrapodi inspired the Green Machine to prevail by 12 points in their first game of the season. “The game started pretty quickly and even though I felt we were the dominant side in the first ten minutes a couple of errors and penalties gave WSAS the first points,” said Bateman. “After that it was a bit of an arm wrestle with WSAS scoring again to make it 12-0. Unfortunately we went in 12-4 down at halftime but after some motivation from Marra we came back out in the second half and dominated the game and scored four unanswered tries to win.” The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews side narrowly went down 16-6.

2013 Junior Representatives: Rd 2 Canberra Raiders V Cronulla Sharks

The Canberra Raiders SG Ball team will be looking to register back-to-back wins against the Cronulla Sharks at home on Saturday afternoon. “We’ve focussed a lot on our set structure and each individual knowing their role,” said captain Luke Bateman. “We’ve also been working on our halves and hookers being more dominant in getting us around the field. Last weekend was a chance for us to dust off the cobwebs so to speak. It was the first round and even though we’ve played trials they’re not the same as real games so we learnt a lot from it and I believe that we’ll be much better in the coming weeks.”

2013 Junior Representatives: Canberra Raiders go down in both grades to Sharks

The Cronulla Sharks narrowly defeated the Canberra Raiders 26-18 on Saturday in Round 2 of the SG Ball competition. Both sides registered four tries a piece in the hard-fought affair however wayward goal kicking by Canberra enabled the Sharks to get the two points in the end. "We didn’t really fall apart, we just had a couple of execution errors during the game which cost us,” said Captain Luke Bateman. “We both scored four tries, it was just goal kicking that separated us in the end. We were up at halftime but unfortunately they scored two unanswered tries in the second half and converted both tries.” In Harold Matthews, the Raiders lost 46-12. “As a team we’re still learning and we need to understand that this is a very competitive football competition,” Raiders co-coach Adam Kyle said. “We can’t come into games thinking things will just happen. Cronulla’s enthusiasm was really good, they looked like a team that wanted to be there and we didn’t start playing until the second half.”

Junior Reps Round 3 Preview: Canberra Raiders v Sydney Roosters

While the Raiders’ SG Ball side has been hit with the loss of Captain Luke Bateman to injury, his absence has been offset by the return of talented five-eighth Andrew Heffernan. “I’m very excited,” said Heffernan. “I have been very close to getting on the field in the last couple of weeks and I’m keen to really put in a good performance. I think that we’re a smaller, fitter side than Roosters so we will need to play within our structure and play smart especially in the last 10 minutes of each half when fatigue is setting in for both sides. Personally I think I can bring speed and direction to the side and I can’t wait to get out there.”

Junior Representative Round 3 Wrap Up: Canberra Raiders v Sydney Roosters

The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews side registered their first win of the year with a 22-18 win over the Sydney Roosters on Saturday afternoon. The win was a result of a brilliant second half come-back where the Raiders registered 14 unanswered points to seal the win. Co-Coach Adam Kyle described the second half as “arguably their best half of football for the year. We really stuck hard in the opening half competing with the Roosters but we didn’t see the benefit on the scoreboard. Our attitude and intensity was brilliant. We had talked all week about wanting to be in the contest and they boys really responded. Even though we were behind at halftime the lads had the belief that if they kept to the game plan it would pay off.”

Junior Representative Round 4 Preview – Canberra Raiders v Melbourne Storm

After missing last round's 24-16 loss to the Sydney Roosters, Raiders SG Ball Captain Luke Bateman is fired up to lead his teammates to victory against the Melbourne Storm. “It was very tough to not to play last week,” said Bateman who missed the Roosters game due to an injury to his gluteus maximus. “Sitting on the sideline and watching the boys have a tough time was even worse knowing I wasn’t able to be out there helping them. Coming back in this week I’ll just play my normal game and try and be strong in attack and defence up the middle. I’ll also aim to bring back my leadership to the boys in the forward pack. This week is very important for us because we could either go 3-1 or 2-2, which in such a short round competition could change our whole position for the rest of the year.”
