And we now have kick off in SG Ball at Northbourne Oval.

Long break from centre Jack Williams comes to nothing in the end. Picked up a grubber close to the line and ran 80 metres, only to be cut down. Storm have had best of play so far, a couple of big breaks down the Raiders right side.

Storm barge over after a fortunate penalty. Scored from 5m out from the tap, no Raiders marker. Not converted.

Raiders go over again, we believe Tevita Pangai. Another close range try. Size and strength.

Storm nearly go over for a try, with a kick to the corner, but the Storm chaser is penalised for off side.

Logan Houghton from the Storm is now on report for an illegal tackle on Cody Wynnik. He's off the field, so one of the Raiders halves is gone.

Storm strike back, following a mid field forward pass from the Raiders. Risky play that wasn't needed.

Storm 22-18 with the conversion.

Raiders right on the attack, but grubber kick early near the line means they defuse the situation. And then go length of the field in the next set and score under the posts. Converted. A couple of poor plays from Canberra have proven to be very costly.

Grubber on the last tackle is too long from the Raiders. They were attacking right on the line but couldn't get over.

Raiders giving away far too many metres, and now the Storm force a line drop out.

Raiders kick out on the full mid field, they needed more from that set in attack. The Storm race away, and now Canberra are penalised in front of the posts. And they take the goal.

Full time

Storm 30
Raiders 24

Some players with some prospect, there, Lachlan Croker, of course. Jiordan Fidow Kele is a very big unit, as is starting second rower Tevita Pangai. Centre Jack Williams looked good. Overall this SG Ball team has a way to go to match the standard of 2012, however.

Recapping today's Junior Representatives action at a very windy Northbourne Oval, the Canberra Raiders had a good win over the Storm in Harold Matthews, 34-12, but went down in SG Ball, 30-24.

I think our U18s will struggle a little after watching today's game. Nothing like the quality of last year.

If the under 18s from last season kick on we should have a fair Holden Cup squad. We have lost Lee, congoo, picker, and a few other guns. I'll be watching with interest to see who the new standouts will be. Milford will shine of course.

I hope don finds a way to keep him, will be heart breaking if he ends up at the broncos, or god forbid follows pappa to parramatta ( if he ends up going). On the other hand, we have another gun halfback with Cornish. Maybe we would choose one and stick with the decision......

Begbie I think the question will be whether we have enough muscle in the forwards. Boyd, Che Kam and Crockett really gave the team some starch last year.

We also have a number of players injured to start the season.

Furner praise for great Canberra Raiders win over Storm in Harold Matthews

The Canberra Raiders Harold Matthews side drew special praise from NRL Head Coach David Furner after their 34-12 win over the Melbourne Storm on Saturday afternoon. With the Raiders NRL side receiving the week off due to round one commencing next week, Furner was on hand at Seiffert Oval to watch the Green Machine run riot over the Storm. Raiders Co-Coach Adam Kyle was very pleased with his sides showing and believes that the players were blown away after Furner walked in to congratulate them after the win. “It was a great win and the boys should be proud of themselves,” said Kyle. “The boys were also lucky enough to have David Furner come in at fulltime to address them after the win. I’m sure they won’t forget that in a hurry.”

2013 Junior representatives: Round 5 Canberra Raiders V Newcastle Knights

Image

The Raiders Harold Matthews side will be vying for their third straight win this weekend however co-coach Adam Kyle is under no illusions that it will be a walk in the park against a talented Newcastle Knights outfit. “I think this will be our hardest test so far,” said Kyle. “We have a long bus trip ahead of us before we play, so preparation for the boys will be key in making sure we get off the bus ready for the game. The Knights have been in good form this season and they are traditionally a very strong junior team. We will be prepared knowing that we will have to work hard for the win.”

Canberra Raiders notch two wins in junior representatives over Newcastle Knights

It sure wasn’t pretty, but the Canberra Raiders SG Ball side secured a much needed win to remain in the race for a semi-finals spot by defeating the Newcastle Knights 40-24 on Saturday afternoon. “As a coach it wasn’t the prettiest game but it was a really important result for us to stay in contention for the finals,” said coach Peter Marrapodi. “We got an early lead but let them back in the contest with some poor discipline and poor execution. We did well to pull together and lift the intensity late in the game to run away with the win. It was a very open game of footy. I don’t think either team would be too proud of their defensive efforts. We gave Newcastle far too much ball in attacking areas. Our performance wasn’t great and we will be looking forward to improving our execution and discipline in the coming weeks.
