Blues get timely title reminder

Image

THEY are the raging premiership favourites, but Queanbeyan Blues were given a timely warning they can't expect to coast to the title in a 42-30 win over Tuggeranong at Seiffert Oval.

The star-studded Blues ran rampant in the first half to build a 30-0 lead over the fourth-placed Bushrangers, and the gap between the minor premiers and the rest looked enormous.

But a second half rally by Tuggeranong in the final-round clash gave the challengers hope a Blues grand final win isn't a formality.

In Sunday's matches, the Kangaroos can secure second place and a major semi against the Blues if they beat Woden Valley at Freebody Oval. Should they lose, it would hand third-placed Belconnen a chance to grab second.

Roos roll over Rams

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos are just ''making up the numbers'' in the Canberra Raiders Cup finals if they continue their form of the past fortnight, according to coach Aaron Gorrell.

His side eked out an ''ordinary'' 16-6 over the Woden Rams at Freebody Oval on Sunday.

The Scholars came from behind to pinch a 36-34 win over the Goulburn Workers, with Chris Thorley converting a penalty to win in the dying minutes. They held on despite Aesai Taholo getting sin-binned with one minute remaining.

The times of next week's finals will be decided on Monday.

Canberra Raiders Cup Wrap up

The Queanbeyan Blues have secured the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup minor premiership with a twelve point win over the Tuggeranong Bushrangers at home.

Both sides will progress through to the semi-finals with the Blues set to take on cross-town rivals the Kangaroos on Sunday at 3:00pm at Seiffert Oval and Tuggeranong to face reigning premiers the Belconnen United Scholars on Sunday at 3:00pm at Raiders Belconnen.

Canberra Raiders Cup Semi Finals Preview

VIDEO: Click here

Queanbeyan Blues (1) v Queanbeyan Kangaroos (2) on Sunday at 3:00pm at Seiffert Oval

Clashes between these two cross-town rivals are always blockbuster clashes but with a spot in the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final up for grabs it is sure to be a massive occasion at Seiffert Oval on Sunday afternoon when the Blues and the Kangaroos face each other.

The Blues and the Kangaroos have been the best two sides all year and as such the victor in this local derby will be rewarded with a saloon passage to the Grand Final whilst the other will have to take on the winner of the match between Belconnen United and Tuggeranong.

“Queanbeyan derbies are always a big occasion and no doubt this weekend will be another fiery clash between the two clubs, especially with a spot in the Grand Final up for grabs,” Blues front-rower Mitch Day said.

“We have put together some great performances over the year and winning the minor premiership, which was a great achievement for the club, but semi-final football is a whole other level and it means nothing if we don't give the semi-finals a real crack.

“A win this weekend would provide us with a very valuable week off leading into the Grand Final. A week off to rest up and get everything 100% right and not have to rely on winning a sudden death game for a spot in the Grand Final will be incredibly valuable to us.”

Both sides will admittedly need to lift for the first round of semi-finals, despite both clubs registering victories in the final match of the regular season.

The Blues are coming off a fairly comfortable 42-30 win over the Bushrangers however they were vastly concerned over the 30 points conceded in the second half alone.

Given the strike power and big match experience that the Kangaroos possess, the Blues can ill-afford to take the foot off the accelerator in the second half against last year’s runners up.

“The Roos are a quality side right across the park,” Day said. “Their massive forward pack is a key for them so if we can match it with them it should prove to be a very interesting contest.

“The focus for this week’s semi-final has been on our own performance. If we can get our preparation and attitude right it should put us in a great position for this weekend’s game against the Roos.”

Meanwhile, Kangaroos Coach Aaron Gorrell was scathing of his side’s performance against the Woden Valley Rams.

Gorrell believes that his side will just be “making up the numbers” in the finals if they continue with the form they displayed against the sixth placed Rams.

While he was never worried that his side would lose the encounter, Gorrell wasn't happy with the effort of his side.

“We made it a lot tougher than it had to be,” Gorrell said. “If we play like that the next couple of weeks, we'll go out the back door. At the moment, the way we played, we're just making up the numbers.”

The Blues and the Kangaroos have won one game each from their two prior matches which should make for a blockbuster clash on Sunday.

Belconnen United Scholars (3) v Tuggeranong Bushrangers (4) on Sunday at 3:00pm at Raiders Belconnen

Belconnen United’s quest to register back-to-back hangs by a thread as they face the most improved side of 2013, Tuggeranong, in a sudden-death semi-final on Sunday afternoon.

Scholars’ Coach John Hawke has admitted that his side, minus Les McIntyre Medalist Brent Crisp, has been a far cry from the Belconnen United outfit that led from start to finish in 2012.

“It was hard to adjust to life without Crispy, he won a few games on his own last year, but we’ve been building our form slowly and the semi-finals are a whole different ball game,” Hawke said.

The focus for Hawke and his side the over the previous two weeks was to secure themselves a home semi-final. This is an especially valuable advantage given the Bushrangers’ strength at home.

“A home final in the first round is something that is very valuable for us,” Hawke said. “We obviously want to go back-to-back this year and a home final will help with that if we turn up with the right attitude.”

A further incentive for the Scholars’ to not relinquish the trophy this year is the fact that it may well be Hawke and Captain Channon McAskill’s last year at the club before they both retire to spend more time with their families.

Both have given tremendous service to their clubs and the competition as a whole and their teammates will be highly motivated to send their respectable pair out winners if they do go through with the decision.

Although they haven’t been at their best this season, Belconnen United still have the talent and big-match experience to have a shot at the title.

Meanwhile for Tuggeranong, after coming second last in 2012 the Bushrangers are unlikely to be content with just making the first round of the semi-finals, they wish to go all the way.

The Bushrangers possess some of the competitions most dangerous attacking players in fullback Michael Brophy and halfback Carl Johnson, both of whom represented CRRL in the Country Championships earlier this year.

While the aforementioned pair will no doubt trouble the Scholars’ defensive structure with their unpredictability, speed and footwork, ultimately the Bushrangers’ forwards will need to aim up against Belconnen United’s renowned pack of forwards led by CRRL representatives Tsai Tui and Aiden Greenwood.

Belconnen United’s strength lies in their forward pack however if Tuggeranong can match them here it could be anyone’s game.

Blues lift Herbert's spirits as he aims to lift title

Former Canberra Raiders halfback Marc Herbert was jaded with rugby league before he found the Blues.

The 26-year-old has given the Queanbeyan Blues a boost on the eve of the Canberra Raiders Cup finals, re-signing with the minor premiers for the 2014 season.

''At times I was wondering where it was all going, but I took some time away from it and got my head right,'' Herbert said.

''The rest of my life is going well, so footy now is fun. There wasn't any doubt in my mind what I could do and achieve with the Blues this year. The first couple of games were a bit rusty, but it was just a matter of finding my feet again.''

Blues seal place in Grand Final

The Queanbeyan Blues stormed into the Canberra Raiders Cup grand final with a 32-10 victory over the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Seiffert Oval on Sunday.

''We had opportunities to be further ahead, but we weren't good enough to take them against a quality side,'' Kangaroos coach Aaron Gorrell said.

''In a semi-final, in any game, you've got to take them and we just didn't. Every opportunity they got they took, just made it very hard for us.''

Canberra Raiders Cup – Semi Finals Wrap Up

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers have upset last year’s premiers the Belconnen United Scholars 24-14 to continue their quest for a place in this year’s TTM Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final. It’s a stunning form reversal for the Bushrangers after finishing second last on the ladder in 2012. “It’s been a good turnaround from last year but it’s not over for us yet,” Tuggeranong Captain-Coach Jarrod Teka said. “Every man in our team stood up. The Scholars have a great pack of forwards but we were really able to minimise their go-forward in what was a great team effort. We’re happy to get the win but we’ve got a big game this weekend so we can’t afford to get too carried away with ourselves. The Roos will be tough.”

Canberra Raiders Cup Preliminary Final

Queanbeyan Kangaroos v Tuggeranong Bushrangers on Saturday at 3:00pm at Seiffert Oval

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos and the Tuggeranong Bushrangers will battle it out for a spot in the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup when they oppose each other at Seiffert Oval on Saturday afternoon. The winner of the match will go onto face the Queanbeyan Blues in the decider next weekend. Last year’s runners up, the Kangaroos, are coming off a loss to the Blues whilst the Bushrangers are continuing their Cinderella story after defeating 2012 premiers the Belconnen United Scholars to keep their season alive. After finishing last year second last on the ladder, the Bushrangers have enjoyed a marvellous turn-around this year and now face the prospect of contesting for the title if they are to defeat the Kangaroos this Saturday.

Bushrangers aim to continue run

The Tuggeranong Bushrangers have flipped their season upside down. Sitting near the foot of the competition ladder in late June, they have risen on the back of having consistently healthy and fit players.

Now, they must defeat the Queanbeyan Kangaroos in an all-important elimination preliminary final.

For the first time in recent seasons player and coach Jarrad Teka believes his team is finally succeeding in evading major injury dramas.

''If you can stay fresh and keep the same players in the same positions, then you're halfway there,'' Teka said.

Kangaroos out to turn tables on Blues

LAST year's grand final loss still hurts, but Queanbeyan Kangaroos five-eighth Jordan Macey believes it could provide the blueprint to spring an upset against Queanbeyan Blues in next week's decider.

The Kangaroos set up a second all-Queanbeyan grand final in three years with a tense 23-18 preliminary final win over Tuggeranong at Seiffert Oval on Saturday. Searching for their first Canberra Raiders Cup premiership since 2008, the Blues will start hot favourites after hammering the Kangaroos 32-10 in the major semi a fortnight ago.

Macey believes the lessons learnt from losing last year's grand final to Belconnen United as favourites could be a secret weapon.

''That match last year is probably a positive, I thought we were the better team but it showed how quickly a grand final can change,'' Macey said.

Canberra Raiders Cup Preliminary Final Wrap Up

The Queanbeyan Kangaroos will play in their fourth straight grand final after defeating the Tuggeranong Bushrangers 23-18 in a thrilling major semi-final at Seiffert Oval on Saturday afternoon. Last year’s 38-26 grand final loss to the Belconnen United Scholars still haunts the Kangaroos however their hard-fought victory over the Bushrangers now provides them with an opportunity to erase that painful memory. The grand final between the Queanbeyan Blues and Queanbeyan Kangaroos is on at 3:00pm this Sunday at Seiffert Oval.

Hard working lock Daniel York was rewarded for an outstanding Canberra Raiders Cup season by winning the Les McIntyre Medal as the competition’s best and fairest player.

At a function at Raiders Belconnen on Monday night, York won by a vote in a thrilling count from Woden Valley centre Tim Crome.

Goulburn Workers Bulldogs Captain Daniel York speaks to Raiders TV after taking out the Les McIntyre Medal at last night's presentation dinner for the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup. The presentation dinner took place at Raiders Belconnen ahead of this Grand Final this Sunday between the Queanbeyan Blues and the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Seiffert Oval. Canberra Raiders Cup Grand Final – Queanbeyan Blues V Queanbeyan Kangaroos

Queanbeyan derbies are fiery encounters at the best of times in the TTM Canberra Raiders Cup, but with grand final glory on the line along with the bragging rights of two competitive coaches whom work together, the 2013 grand final is sure to be remembered for a long, long time.

Blues Coach Simon Woolford and Kangaroos Coach Aaron Gorrell work with each other at Clean Machine, have been exchanging plenty of banter in the lead up to the grand final as Woolford’s side attempts to win the title for the first time since 2008 and Gorrell’s side, in their fourth grand final in a row, are looking to seek retribution for last year’s painful loss.

Woolford and Gorrell are close mates and have had a relationship stemming back from their time sharing the hooking role at St George Illawarra in their playing days however their fondness for each other will be forgotten when Sunday rolls around.

“We’ve obviously spent a fair bit of time together and we’re good mates but come Sunday I won’t be talking to him for a week if they beat us,” laughed Woolford. “On Sunday the competitive juices will definitely be there and we’ll both be doing our best to get our teams over the line.

Friends become foes

Image

They work together at the same cleaning company, but Queanbeyan Blues coach Simon Woolford and Queanbeyan Kangaroos opposite Aaron Gorrell want to take each other to the cleaners in Sunday's Canberra Raiders Cup grand final.

Their strong friendship will be put on hold for 80 minutes as the former NRL hookers battle for cross-town bragging rights at Seiffert Oval.

''I think whoever loses has to work Monday, hopefully it's not me,'' Gorrell said. ''We're pretty good mates and you talk footy, but we keep most things pretty secretive. There's been a bit of friendly banter and hopefully I can bag him for a while.''

Code switch tonic for Stevens

DEEP down, Queanbeyan Blues' rugby union recruit Tyler Stevens knew he needed a change.

Forced to sit out last year with a groin injury, he watched in envy as schoolmates Robbie Coleman and Colby Faingaa forged Super Rugby careers with ACT Brumbies.

But having returned to his first love of rugby league this season, he's got his mojo back.

The speedy centre has been one of the factors behind the Blues' charge to Sunday's Canberra Raiders Cup grand final against Queanbeyan Kangaroos.
