Wouldn’t be shocked if the Titans get the busted roosters. Storm, Panthers and Eels in the others for me.

It really is just a final 4 this year with 4 other teams making numbers. Would have been a great year to live up to potential

Can't see any way with our roster that we could compete with the Storm and Panthers, even if GWilly hadn't done his heel turn.Billy Walker wrote: ↑September 6, 2021, 8:19 am It really is just a final 4 this year with 4 other teams making numbers. Would have been a great year to live up to potential

I agree - we are a long way off the pace with no quick fix in sight, yet our strategy seems to be to stick with ageing players that haven’t got us there in the past.Roger Kenworthy wrote: ↑September 6, 2021, 9:08 amCan't see any way with our roster that we could compete with the Storm and Panthers, even if GWilly hadn't done his heel turn.Billy Walker wrote: ↑September 6, 2021, 8:19 am It really is just a final 4 this year with 4 other teams making numbers. The point I was making is that this year more than most the final series seems to be down to 4 rather than 6 or 8, but yeah we wouldn’t be troubling any of those teams with our rabble.
Re: 2021 NRL Finals Wk 1: Teams and Game Day
The storm and panthers are not only more talented, they are adapting to the new style of footy so much better than anyone else that in my mind it is a true 2 horse race.Roger Kenworthy wrote: ↑September 6, 2021, 9:08 amCan't see any way with our roster that we could compete with the Storm and Panthers, even if GWilly hadn't done his heel turn.Billy Walker wrote: ↑September 6, 2021, 8:19 am It really is just a final 4 this year with 4 other teams making numbers. We could have our 2019 GF playing at it's peak and we wouldnt hang with those dudes playing the way we play
Re: 2021 NRL Finals Wk 1: Teams and Game Day
Im kinda relieved we didn't make it.
Some hard decisions to be made.
Hopefully we get there next year bigger and better.

Who are we going for? I’m happy for Panthers or Storm I guess. Both have great systems set the pace all year and deserve any success that comes their way?

But Billy, one of those teams won’t win a premiership this year. As I understand it that makes them complete failures?

Watch how often the Storm players don’t use their feet to play the ball properly.

Good example there of an infringement and the disadvantaged side received absolutely 0 benefit. Got to fix that.

Manly won't get close with such a slow ruck.

Storm getting away with murder in the ruck. This has been cracked down on most of the season. Not tonight however.gergreg wrote:Manly won't get close with such a slow ruck.

Storm have perfected:
- slowing down momentum in tackle 1 and 2 - ref gives a restart every now and then but isn’t consistent
- playing the ball off the mark to catch the markers out
- decoy runners slowing in the line, causing a gap and then running through so they don’t get pinged
They’re too good.

John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.

The Storm have done their homework on Manly. Their players work the plays so well and there is support for the break or half break. Manly don't seem able to break the Storm line. Even Turbo looks contained to this point in the game. Storm leading 30-12 at present.

Re: 2021 NRL Finals Wk 1: Teams and Game Day
I suspect that that is exactly how the losing team will see the situation and that is what will drive them to future success. Successful teams have that mentality - teams that make up the numbers enjoy obscure records and odd measures and wired success markers. They also have a fan base comfortable with mediocrity. I’d rather we aim to be the former rather than the latter…gangrenous wrote: ↑September 10, 2021, 6:38 pm But Billy, one of those teams won’t win a premiership this year. Re: 2021 NRL Finals Wk 1: Teams and Game Day
I was MUCH higher on Manly than almost anyone i knew, i had them a top 6 team this year
But even i never thought they could really compete with the Storm on most weeks, they'd need a lot to go in their favour to knock off Melbourne or Penrith imo
It's a two horse race. And yes, the one who doesnt win is a total and complete failure

They always take the grubbiness up a few levels this time of year. Hard to watch - I lasted 20 minutes.
Re: 2021 NRL Finals Wk 1: Teams and Game Day
After watching the storm click into gear... im happy we arent in the finals.
Can watch all the games stress free.
Fingers crossed for next year we can dish something up to compete with these top sides

Enjoyed watching that even with the score line.
Every time Manly tried to build or maintain pressure that right side collapsed. Harper with an all time stinker.
Some absolutely beautiful play from the Melbourne spine.

Re: 2021 NRL Finals Wk 1: Teams and Game Day
They perfected these spoiling tactics, or variations of it over a decade ago but for some reason get away with it year after year. Just on the decoy runners, it really needs to be looked at closer, Olam did it so often tonight. Destroying the game more than V'landysball.reptar wrote:Storm have perfected:

Of course they get away with it. They play to the rules and loopholes the NRL permits.
I’m doesn’t matter how many rule changes the NRL make, Bellamy will always be at the forefront of working out where there are inadequacies in the rules that give his team the greatest edge.
I wish there was someone at the Raiders even trying to do this.

I absolutely loathe what he and Robbo have done (and continue to do) to the game. That said I'd take either at the Raiders in a heartbeat - but it would be very interesting to see if they were allowed to get away with these tactics at our club. Melbourne is an important market for them and Nick has his tentacles everywhere.gangrenous wrote:Of course they get away with it. They play to the rules and loopholes the NRL permits.

Storm have gone away from the Wrestle since the 6 again rule came in. They have no mastered the art of the Tangle. Get any part of the body except the arms caught up with the ball player while giving the impression you're trying to break free. Even make it look like the tackled player contributing and gain a "milking" call.
