Tommy Raudonikis dies after cancer battle

Rugby league legend Tommy Raudonikis has died at the age of 70 from cancer. Raudonikis played at halfback for both Wests and Newtown, suiting up for the Jets in the 1981 grand final. He had testicular cancer after a quadruple heart surgery and was later diagnosed with throat cancer.

A true legend of Rugby League.

I met him a couple of years ago at Sydney airport, he was travelling to QLD ... we had a bit of a laugh because I suggested they wouldn’t let him in, before he told me he actually lived there!

RIP Tommy.

Bloody legend of Rugby League. Loved the Betoota Advocate article they did for him.

Since back in my school days I knew Tom (some how pronounced as Rowd Nekus in those days), played with and against him several times and got to know him pretty well. Used to bump into him later when he was famous, but absolutely no different to his larrikan school days. Always up for a beer and a catch up, always looking for the best in people. Its a sad day.

Came across as a pretty genuine character.

Not sure how many other people there are who can unashamedly go out there to intentionally start blues, or punch on with whoever he needed to, for his team to get the win and still walk away from the opposition as his mates off the field.

now part of rugby league folklore. We obviously won't see anyone like him again.

'Tommy Raudonikis was on the front of my scrapbook' says Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart

As Tommy Raudonikis carved out a reputation in the 1970s, an impressionable young halfback from Queanbeyan was enamoured with the Western Suburbs number seven. His name was Ricky Stuart.

"Me and my brother, we had scrapbooks, on the front of my brother's scrapbook was Arthur Beetson and on the front of my scrapbook was Bob Fulton and Tom Raudonikis," Stuart said a day after Raudonikis lost his long battle with cancer.
