Sydney Roosters: 2021 round 1 predicted team

Victor Radley and Sam Verrills are racing the clock for round one after suffering ACL ruptures during the 2020 season but Radley would come straight in if fit. If neither makes round one then the last bench spot if a toss-up between Hutchison as a utility or another forward such as Daniel Fifita.

Sam Walker shapes as the long-term No.7 but may not quite be NRL-ready yet, in which case Lachlan Lam would start the season with the recently re-signed Hutchison and recruit Adam Keighran as other options.

1. James Tedesco
2. Daniel Tupou
3. Josh Morris
4. Joseph Manu
5. Brett Morris
6. Luke Keary
7. Lachlan Lam
8. Jared Waerea-Hargreaves
9. Jake Friend
10. Sio Siua Taukeiaho
11. Angus Crichton
12. Boyd Cordner
13. Isaac Liu

14. Nat Butcher
15. Lindsay Collins
16. Sitili Tupouniua
17. Drew Hutchison

Others: Fletcher Baker, Egan Butcher, Matt Ikuvalu, Adam Keighran, Victor Radley, Billy Smith, Joseph Suaalii, Daniel Suluka-Fifita, Sam Verrills, Sam Walker

If Lam and Friend are regulars in their spine they might be in a bit of trouble. They’d want Walker to progress quickly... and get Radley and Verrills out there quickly.

Verrills maybe. Radley no. He's pretty ordinary at dummy half.

Wasn't thinking of Radley for dummy half, more that the forwards missing some fire power without him.

I'd have Radley over Liu, and Verrills over Collins easily, Liu would take Hutchinsons spot on the bench.

I see Suaalii has been selected for the emerging Blues squad and it is pretty obvious how the Roosters lured him to the club. This is a misuse of power by Fittler. Hate to get all 'Toovey like' but I think there needs to be an investigation into this.

Just a little too obvious. He hasn't even played a game of senior rugby league yet. On that point the Rorters has requested the NRL waive the minimum age restriction to allow him to play this year. If this is allowed they may as well scrap the rule completely.

Boyd Cordner set to miss first 12 weeks as Sydney Roosters seek $350,000 cap relief

Champion Sydney Roosters co-captain Boyd Cordner looks set to miss at least the opening 12 games of the season, with the Tricolours making a formal submission to the NRL for $350,000 in salary cap relief. Cordner suffered his fourth concussion of the season playing Origin I in Adelaide last November.

Under the NRL rules, the Roosters are eligible to apply for salary cap relief because Cordner sustained the injury playing representative football.

Sydney Roosters forward Victor Radley banned for two matches after Byron Bay incident

The National Rugby League (NRL) has suspended Sydney Roosters player Victor Radley for two matches and fined him $20,000, with 50 per cent suspended for 12 months, and directed him to complete an appropriate education and training course, after he was involved in an incident in Byron Bay on 30 December 2020.

Radley breached the game’s code of conduct when he tackled an individual in a street. The penalty reflects both Radley’s conduct and failure to report the incident.

In accepting the Breach Notice, Radley has apologised for his actions.

Radley has also been required to report back to the Club and NRL following the completion of the education and training course.

Sam Walker re-signs with Sydney Roosters until end of 2023

Young gun Sam Walker has re-signed with the Roosters on a new two-year deal - keeping him at the club until the end of 2023 - and if he had it his way, coach Trent Robinson said he would have extended his tenure for a decade.

Big fines for Sydney Roosters and coach Trent Robinson

The Roosters have been issued a breach notice proposing fines totalling $40,000 after the alleged on-field abuse of match officials and coach Trent Robinson's controversial post-game comments last Friday.

According to the NRL statement, it proposes a $10,000 fine for alleged abuse of match officials during the match, a $20,000 fine for comments made by Robinson following the Roosters' loss to South Sydney and a suspended $10,000 fine will also be activated, if the club is found to have breached NRL Rules regarding public commentary on match officials.

NRL statement

The National Rugby League (NRL) has issued the Sydney Roosters with a Breach Notice and a total fine of $40,000 for the alleged abuse of match officials during Friday night’s game against the South Sydney Rabbitohs and public comments made at the post match media conference which are alleged to have breached the NRL’s Code of Conduct.

The Breach Notice proposes a $10,000 fine for alleged abuse of match officials during the match, a $20,000 fine for comments made by the Head Coach Trent Robinson following the match and a suspended $10,000 fine will also be activated, if the Club is found to have breached NRL Rules regarding public commentary on match officials.

The particulars of the Breach Notice are:

Abuse of Match Officials

It is alleged Sydney Roosters officials made abusive comments towards on-field match officials and the stand-by referee during the match. The Club has also been warned that a repeat of such conduct will result in individuals having their access to the sideline removed during the Finals Series.

Public Comments

It’s alleged at the post match media conference Sydney Roosters Head Coach Trent Robinson claimed match officials had a bias against the Sydney Roosters and exposed individual match officials to personal ridicule in contravention of NRL Rules. In considering the penalty the NRL took into account Robinson had been issued with a Breach Notice for similar conduct in May this year for which a suspended $10,000 fine was imposed.

The NRL is continuing to investigate allegations a Sydney Roosters player had an altercation with a broadcast cameraman during the game. No determination has been made at this time.

NRL Chief Executive Andrew Abdo said he expected clubs in an elite competition to show a higher level of professionalism.

“Sport can be highly emotional and sometimes people will debate decisions made on the field and we expect all Clubs to deal with on-field matters respectfully,’’ he said.

“We can analyse and debate decisions, but such commentary should not be personalised and disrespectful. In our view there was a lack of professionalism shown by the Club and its officials across Friday night. We’re an elite competition and we should set the standard for how to deal with adversity.”

Mr Abdo issued a warning to all Clubs that abuse of match officials would not be tolerated in the Finals Series.

“There is no place for the abuse or harassment of match officials by club officials on the sideline. It’s not tolerated in community sport and it’s certainly not tolerated in elite sport. It is important that at the highest level all Club officials control their emotions and set an example to everyone in our sport.

“We will not hesitate to remove the sideline access of any official who repeatedly makes abusive comments towards our match officials.”

Mr Abdo said the NRL acknowledged an incorrect decision was made on Friday night.

“We believe the bunker should have dismissed the player from the field. We have been very open about that and we acted quickly to amend the match appointments for the remainder of the round,’’ he said.

“But regardless of their decisions, right or wrong, our match officials are always entitled to the respect of our participants for the difficult work they do.”

The Sydney Roosters have 5 business days to respond to the Breach Notice.
