Penrith Panthers: 2021 round 1 predicted team

Veteran winger Josh Mansour has reportedly been told he will start the season behind Charlie Staines and Brian To'o. Brent Naden's immediate future is under a cloud following a positive drugs test after the 2020 grand final meaning either Tyrone May continues in the role or Dean Whare returns as a specialist centre, which could bump May to the bench and Belmore-bound half Matt Burton to the reserves.

Any of Zane Tetevano, Moses Leota or Matt Eisenhuth could replace James Tamou at prop but Tetevano is the most experienced while Leota has been functioning well as a bench weapon.

1. Dylan Edwards
2. Charlie Staines
3. Stephen Crichton
4. Tyrone May
5. Brian To'o
6. Jarome Luai
7. Nathan Cleary
8. James Fisher-Harris
9. Api Koroisau
10. Zane Tetevano
11. Viliame Kikau
12. Liam Martin
13. Isaah Yeo

14. Kurt Capewell
15. Moses Leota
16. Matt Burton
17. Spencer Leniu

Others: Billy Burns, Matt Eisenhuth, Robert Jennings, Mitch Kenny, Josh Mansour, Brent Naden, Lindsay Smith, Dean Whare

Penrith Panthers Brent Naden issued $5000 breach notice for biosecurity breach

The National Rugby League (NRL) has today issued Penrith Panthers player Brent Naden with a breach notice for failing to comply with the game’s 2020 biosecurity protocols.

The breach notice proposes Naden be fined $5,000 after he associated with people outside the Panthers’ bubble, on the evening prior to the 2020 NRL Telstra Premiership Grand Final.

The fine is consistent with sanctions handed down to players who committed similar breaches during the 2020 season, which took into account the income of the Player.

Separately, the NRL has completed a thorough investigation into whether the Panthers had any knowledge of Naden using illicit substances on the evening prior to the Grand Final.

The NRL has found no evidence the club was aware of the breach prior to Naden playing in the Grand Final.

Naden has already served a one-month suspension in compliance with the World Anti-Doping Code for returning a positive sample to Benzoylecgonine and Methylecgonine (metabolites of Cocaine).

Today’s sanction deals only with the biosecurity breach.

Big test for the Ivan Cleary this season. He has a quality spine that will hold them in good stead, but such a young team can either be motivated by last year's disappointment, or it could really knock them around. Like us, they have seemed to struggle to put two good seasons together in the past.

Gee Naden got off lightly.

I think the Panthers will go ok this year. Top 8.

Remember Wendell Sailor getting 2 years for a positive to cocaine. Naden gets 1 month in the off season and misses 0 games.

Ridiculous penalty.

I actually think they'll struggle this year. Losing Tamou and Tetevano will bite them in the butt.

Stephen Crichton to stay with Penrith Panthers until end 2023

Penrith has received a boost on the eve of the 2021 Telstra Premiership season with representative centre Stephen Crichton agreeing to a new two-year contract on Wednesday. Crichton's extension will mean the 20-year-old remains at the Panthers until at least the end of the 2023 season.

Crichton commits to Panthers

Penrith Panthers is delighted to announce Stephen Crichton has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the club.

The new deal means the 20-year-old centre is committed to Panthers until at least the end of the 2023 season.

"It’s really exciting to know I’m going to be at Panthers for the next three years," Crichton said.

"This is my home. I’ve grown up in this club and built strong relationships with everyone here. I’ve never wanted to play anywhere else.

"To get the deal done before the season starts is massive and now I can focus on playing my best footy."

A local junior with St Marys and St Clair Comets, Crichton first donned Panthers colours as a member of the club’s SG Ball side in 2018.

"I’m very happy that ‘Critta’ will continue to grow and develop in the Panthers system alongside his good mates," Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said.

"I look forward to working with him over the next three years and I know he’ll contribute strongly to our club, on and off the field, in that time."

Crichton began 2019 in the Panthers Jersey Flegg squad before making his senior debut in the Canterbury Cup, his representative debut for the NSW U20s Origin side and his NRL debut in Round 21.

Last season he established himself as a starting centre in the Panthers NRL side, scoring 17 tries in 22 appearances, and was named in the Dally M Team of the Year and the extended NSW Origin squad.

"We’re thrilled to have Stephen commit to Panthers until the end of 2023," Panthers General Manager Rugby League Matt Cameron said.

"He’s another example of a local junior we’ve developed into an NRL player, on the cusp of higher representative honours.

"We take great pride in Stephen’s journey so far and consider it further validation of our club’s significant investment in junior development.

"We know his success in Panthers colours can serve as powerful inspiration for the next generation of youngsters playing Rugby League across the Penrith district."

Jarome Luai locks in new Penrith Panthers deal until end of 2024

Star five-eighth Jarome Luai has settled his future long term at Penrith after signing a three-year contract extension just a day after securing Stephen Crichton in similar fashion.

Club statement

Penrith Panthers is delighted to announce Jarome Luai has signed a three-year contract extension with the club.

The new deal means the 24-year-old playmaker has committed to Panthers until at least the end of the 2024 season.

“I feel blessed to know I’ll be at Panthers for the next four years,” Luai said.

“This is my home. This is where I grew up. This is my family. Every time I pull on that jersey, I’m playing for all those things and more.

“I think it’s going to be a great season and I’m just really excited to get out there and play some footy.”

A local junior with St Marys, Luai progressed through the Panthers development system to achieve his NRL debut in 2018.

The Samoan international had to bide his time behind James Maloney before stepping into the five-eighth role last season.

“I first watched Jarome playing alongside Nathan (Cleary) as a 15-year-old,” Panthers coach Ivan Cleary said.

“He had to wait a little bit longer to cement his spot in the NRL but the natural combination those two have will be vital for our club over the coming years.

“Jarome’s value to our team is more than just his individual skills. He has an ability to connect the players around him, which is crucial to our success.

“I look forward to working with him and watching his game continue to grow in the seasons ahead.”

Luai played a key role in the team’s record-breaking 2020 campaign, scoring seven tries and notching up 23 try assists.

His outstanding form was rewarded with selection in the extended NSW Origin squad and the Maori All Stars side.

“Panthers has taken a very deliberate approach to recruitment and retention over the summer months to ensure we put the club in the best possible position moving forward,” Panthers General Manager Rugby League Matt Cameron said.

“Securing Jarome’s services through to the end of 2024 is a key piece of that puzzle.

“At the start of every year, when we speak to the families involved in our junior development system, we make a promise to the parents that we will shape their kids into better players, and more importantly, better people.

“We believe Jarome is a reflection of that heartfelt commitment and we look forward to the next steps in his journey.”

If injuries are kind to them again they will be hard to beat. The 2020 grand final performance was pretty ordinary, but they seem to be a pretty happy group.

Halves combo of Luai and Burton. Both are opportunists rather than organisers. Let's see if it affects their flow in attack.

Id be interested to see how that would go
cant say Burton has been particularly impressive in limited stints in the halves for me... big boot, good running game and not a lot else.
He looks a natural at centre though

But perhaps with a longer stint in there he'd have a chance to settle in and show case some other halves skills

Can the panthers win without Cleary? Yeah they can, the team is good enough to do it, and Laui is a stud... but it will certainly make things harder. Be interesting to see what they'd do to combat it, you wonder if this sort of injury could end up expiditing the end of Dylan Edwards

Penrith Panther Tyrone May fails to learn lessons from checkered past

While celebrating the aforementioned premiership - where he played 13 minutes of the grand final off the bench - Tyrone May took to Instagram to portray himself as a victim who had been reborn like a phoenix out of the ashes of adversity. It shows while May might have moved on from his narrow escape from jail, he certainly didn't learn anything from it.

Nathan Cleary and Tyrone May provided tickets to Queensland border breachers

The NRL has confirmed Penrith Panthers stars Nathan Cleary and Tyrone May were the ones who handed out free grand final tickets to friends who had illegally entered Queensland on false Covid-19 exemptions.

But no action was taken against the two players because they both convinced the integrity unit they were unaware their mates had unlawfully crossed the border 24 hours before the decider.

Penrith Panthers fume after Nathan Cleary had Clive Churchill Medal taken from him by NRL

The Panthers are far from impressed that Nathan Cleary was stripped of the Clive Churchill medal just moments after receiving it, as it was incorrectly engraved as a match played in Sydney.

"They promised that they would correct it and return it ASAP and begged Nathan not to say anything about it," a highly-placed Panthers source said. "Nathan went to see his grandmother yesterday for the first time in four months and naturally the first thing she wanted to see was the medal. Perhaps the NRL should be fined for disrespecting Clive Churchill and his family by engraving the medal incorrectly and then making the winner wait (with no explanation) a month (and counting) to actually receive what he earned?"
