Queensland border closure leaves four NRL teams in limbo

The NRL season has again been threatened due to the coronavirus spike with Queensland closing its borders to Sydney. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced “no one from Sydney is allowed into Queensland” as she shuts the border amid a growing outbreak.

this season a trip to QLD has been an opportunity to boost F&A.

NRL in urgent talks with Queensland government over border closure

NRL officials have kicked off urgent talks with the Queensland government after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk declared Greater Sydney a COVID-19 hotspot and said the the state's borders would close to Sydney residents.

The Raiders are due to travel to Townsville on Saturday to face North Queensland, with submissions made by the club for Josh Papalii and Joe Tapine to be granted travel exemptions having not had flu shots. Canberra is yet to receive official word from the Queensland government on their players and it is yet to be determined if Palaszczuk's latest border rules effect those submissions.

I'd assume the NRL just needs reaffirmation their expemption is still in place provided they maintain current protocols.

NRL's travel exemptions remain despite Queensland border closure

The NRL's travel exemptions into Queensland will stand despite Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk declaring Greater Sydney a COVID-19 hotspot and closing state borders to Sydney residents from Saturday.

The NRL has been given assurance that the Palaszczuk government's allowances for players and Sydney-based teams will stand after the ARL Commission secured travel exemptions when borders were closed earlier this year.

Rumours circulating that Queensland will go to a hard border with NSW this weekend. No one allowed in. No exceptions. Hard to see that they could justify football players crossing the border when even border residents can't cross for basic services.

If this entire thing has taught us nothing else, it should be to never underestimate sports ability to push on through regardless of what is happening.
Evidently sport is much more important to society and politicians than we thought.

I think the fact they have a fly in fly out model is the saving grace.

It's all controlled to a tee, the players are ushered in and out without any contact with the public

All that money talks.

Currently people aren't allowed from covid free areas into Queensland for essential healthcare, but footy players are fine.

Yeah it's objectively pretty absurd that in the midst of all of this, that sport of all things has been one of the major priorities for virtually ever first world country

I’m okay with it if it means we get to continue watching the Broncos implode
Gina Riley: Oh, come on, John. That’s a bit old hat, the corrupt IOC delegate.
John Clarke: Old hat? Gina, in the scientific world when they see that something is happening again and again and again, repeatedly, they don’t call it old hat. They call it a pattern.
