They'll bring their usual nonsense about spirit and pick and stick but where's *checks notes* Cameron Smith this year?

Hmmm fairly evenly matched teams by my read. I’m struggling to pick a winner between them. Not a big Josh McGuire fan - I don’t think the reality matches the hype. NSW narrowly perhaps or Qld maybe- should be a good contest!

Do have to say I reckon that’s the weakest list of 34 players I’ve seen in Origin for a loooong time.

It’s hard to disagree. Origin last year was a club standard game. Not a lot different this year.

There are some very good players in there, but as an England fan, it's only Tedesco that scares me.

This is the first time since I started following the game in the early 90s that there haven't been half a dozen or so formidable players available to the Kangaroos.

Chambers vs Mitchell is an area NSW had an advantage last year. Also Cook running from dummy half will be a threat to Qld. The battle of the fullbacks will be great to watch. Teddy with his size and pace vs the stepping skills and sheer footy instinct of Ponga. Qld go in with a more experienced side at this level. NSW unable to pick the side they would have wanted due to injury eg Keary and Turbo Tom. Qld have the home ground advantage in Game 1. Payne Haas will have to get used to jeers vs cheers at Lang Park. I think the game will be a beauty. I can't wait for it to begin on June 5.

I'd gone right off Origin for the past 5-10yrs. I didn't watch it.

And I blame the ch9 team..

But this year has me keen again thanks to the inclusion of our boys.

Should be a tight series, there's some great one on one matchups across the field..

I'm the same, I couldn't bring myself to go for NSW with the teams they picked the last couple of years and the lack of raiders players but I'll be back watching this year.

Guys, I have an inkling that if 3 of our players play all 3 SOO games we are going to have salary cap issues.

We are already on the limit and I don’t think the $40k match payments for 3 players would have been budgeted.

Haha yeah, it's the time of year the NSW fans on this forum like gangrenous bemoan the fact that GE has "suddenly become irrational".

Surely rep payment come from the governing body and are over and above the cap?

They don't count on the cap. Only rep bonuses from the club's do and I think they will only count next year even if paid this year.

See https://www.nrl.com/operations/integrity/salary-cap/

Example: A player played State of Origin in 2017. His 2018 Contract includes a $20,000 State of Origin bonus. This bonus will be included in the player's 2018 Salary Cap Value.

I'm not sure there's we are on the limit either. Definitely not for next year.

TBF to the station there are a hell of a lot of dropkicks that follow the sport. I've seen some truly awful stuff at games. You sit in a bay with a tonne of families around you yet some absolute edits will sit there for 90 minutes swearing their heads off at the top of their lungs.

It's pretty unreal how close these 2 teams are.

Since the Sydney Olympics there's only been 1 series white wash.
To put that in perspective, if you had a set of 3 coins and flipped them, like two-up, there's a 2/8 chance they'd come up all heads or all tails. With say a H representing a NSW win and a T representing a QLD win

HHH HHT HTH HTT THH THT TTH TTT

In the last 18 years you'd expect 4-5 series whitewashes if the teams were 50-50 going into every game, with more chances of a whitewash if one side is better than the other

That's a shame PJ you've missed some of the best players ever to play the game. I know they were wearing Maroon but sheer skills under pressure, they delivered. Hopefully the Blues can go on a multi year run. We have the fastest hooker ever to play, a footballing freak at left centre and Teddy at the back. Add a couple of Raiders and it has to be GO THE BLUES.

NRL.com has full match replays of every State of Origin back to 1980 available on their website (not mobile version).

I’m watching 1980 now. Brilliant.
Meninga is starting centre for Qld and goal kicker, and biggest bloke on the field behind Artie. Seriously, this bloke retired winning the 1994 GF!

Breathe easy NSW Blues fans, the Canberra Raiders showed it works

It's been labelled another wacky idea from the zany Brad Fittler. Breathe in, breathe out. Everyone does it. There's no way it can help the NSW Blues coach defend his State of Origin crown. Think again. It worked for the Canberra Raiders 16 years ago. And now it's set to help the Blues.

Feels like a bigger build up this year than it has been in recent years. Maybe Qld dominance did hurt the interest south of the border a bit. There seems more a buzz about the series this year.

Any predictions?

My head says qld to win game one 3 tries to 2, with some penalty goals sprinkled in there also.
I think it will be one of those kind of close on the scoreline but not really on the field type games.

Yeah I'm on the less-buzz-bandwagon. Apart from the insane ramblings of Kevy Walters, there hasn't really been much to talk about.

I think it'll change once kick-off arrives.

Yeah, I agree.

It's a bit "meh" on some levels. I'm pumped to see Jack and Nic play though.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.
