SCG to host NRL grand final in 2020 during Stadium Australia refurbishment

Stadium Australia will undergo a facelift after next year's State of Origin series, handing the Sydney Cricket Ground the rights to at least the 2020 NRL grand final during construction. Stadium Australia, which will be transformed into a 70-75,000 seat rectangular facility, will be out of action until the start of the 2023 NRL season.

Cut together some video from earlier in the season and become the embodiment of TheGH with a new forum segment called The PeJorative. Each week you call for the sacking of someone random (it's always croker) with out-of-context video evidence showing how terrible they are.
Think of the ratings.

Humdingers like this one are where it's at

I'm glad Queensland resisted the temptation to "go the axe" and only made one change that wasn't due to injury (either someone out or someone returning).

Now we just need to be better for Game 3. Backs to the wall here, need to be a lot better than Game 2, that was a horrible performance.

Here's a piece from Newcastle Herald sports journo Robert Dillon in today's rag..

The main focus is the Knights of course, and what can be considered a pass mark for 2019.

So..word for word he says.

Before the Rnd19 kickoff the Knights were two wins behind 5th placed Manly and a win adrift of 6th placed Parramatta. And the way I look at it is: which roster would you prefer ? Manlys or Newcastles? Parramattas or Newcastles ? Indeed, the same can be said for Canberra. The Raiders are enjoying a breakout season, but I can't help thinking they are over achieving and they will encounter a reality check before the season is done.
None of them can match the five players Newcastle provided to this years SOO series. On paper I'd argue the Knights are stronger than Canberra, Manly and Parramatta..END !!

This guy is clearly stoned, he's saying because the Knights had 5 Origin reps they have a superior squad to Canberra..

Ok..we had Papalii, Wighton and Cotric play Origin(3) but Hodgson, Whitehead, Bateman(ENG), Tapine, Rapana(NZ) , Havili(Tonga), and even BJ(Samoa) never got mentioned.

Clearly, Robert Dillon has had a severe head knock...

Rant alert.

NRL are now looking to adopt hawk-eye technology for forward passes.

Apparently they can develop a system which can determine whether or not the ball leaves the hands backwards or forwards. I’m extremely sceptical on how well this is going to pan out.

Let’s jump back to the previous era on forward passes. The calls were very much favouring benefit of the doubt toward the attacking team. The occasional howler was let go in the lead up to a try. Keeping in mind momentum and the uncertainty in the refs minds, I can live with the occasional forward pass on the fly which leads to a try.

Now on the other end of the scale, we saw quite a few dummy half passes which were travelling forward to the first receiver who is usually blamed for mistiming his run. The dummy half is passing off the ground, with the feet planted. No momentum is at play. I have no issue with the NRL cracking down on these. They are pretty much black and white to rule on.

Fast forward to today. The NRL has cracked down on every pass thrown regardless of context. The touch judge’s are put on notice to make more calls.

This pressure is what’s leading to the elimination of the concept of momentum which is absolutely fundamental to officiating the sport.

Late in Saturday nights game, Melbourne Storm were pinged for a forward pass from Olam to Ado Carr which could easily be argued as going flat. Melbourne gained no advantage from the pass being thrown, which I think should play a factor in whether or not that call was made, given how line ball it looked. Benefit of the doubt should’ve landed with Melbourne there. To me, it’s no different to being 20cm offside in the defensive line during Golden Point. The refs are never going to make a call like that during Golden Point, so why should the flat ball have been pulled up. It’s officials feeling the pressure.

I absolutely knew that the NRL would go from one extreme to another on this and they’re going even further to bring in hawk eye and bring back video refereeing for forward passes which is a massive step backwards in my book.

Go back to the old way of officiating forward passes. You’ll never please everyone, but the game was better to watch before.

Yeh Raiders, Id be happy for this as long as its only used or implemented within the video review for a try. I think the video review process currently is the best it has been for a while, its intervening in the running of play less, and not being used every time a try is scored.

It is a pet peeve of mine that a try can be sent up for review, a blatant forward pass be thrown to score, and the refs have no way to effect the ruling under the current system. HAving a hawkeye sytem that could be used within this process could close that loop.

I cant see how it could be used in the general run of play though, the processing time for hawkeye would restrict its functionality in anything other than a review.

wasn't there also supposed to be some sort of hawkeye for officiating the 10m offside line at one stage?

Annesley said today that technology exists and might be able to be introduced for next season. The forward pass technology would have to be developed, but it is possible to do. But it would be a long term project.

Fox league introduced it, but canned it as it would lead to whinging about the refs marking the 10 properly
