According to the DT Saints are looking to extend Paul McGregor. Won 3 on the trot, definitely worth extending.
DeBelin also in court against the NRL stand down.

Haha I swear the dragons do this every year about April and then want to sack him by finals time and his future is always in doubt over the off-season!

Brent Read was saying on Triple M yesterday that he believes one of JDB’s arguments is that there’s evidence fans are turning away from the NRL due to alcohol and gambling sponsorship, but they’re still taking the money, yet his being stood down due to his behaviour turning away fans.gergreg wrote:According to the DT Saints are looking to extend Paul McGregor. It's only valid if you think there's no plus to the NRL gaining those sponsorship dollars. What's the plus for the NRL if JDB plays? Zero.
Sure the money could come from cleaner sources but the NRL obviously thinks the money is worth the cons.

Yeah, but what are the pluses? Are they seriously going to say in court “Sure, we’re losing fans because of the alcohol and gambling sponsors, but on the positive, the NRL is making money from alcohol and gambling companies”?

Surely they can't argue those 2 things are in the same ballpark. Rape accusations vs sponsorship deals from those industries. They're also losing fans because of expensive pies. Maybe that will come up.

Well I guess if they could prove the number of fans lost due to expensive pies is comparable to rape accusations and gambling money, sure.
I don’t have the data to compare lost fans due to these accusations vs lost fans due to alcohol and gambling sponsorship.
But if they’re comparable, and Toddy G comes out with “It’s different because of the amount of money we take off those companies.” I don’t think it’ll fly. It’d be like saying the fans don’t matter in that case, because we’re getting paid*.
You would imagine they’d have NPS data that could compare the detractors between both causes, and conclude if they’re comparable.
FWIW, I don’t necessarily agree with the point, because Alcohol and Gambling aren’t criminal, I just think if “We’re losing fans as a result of this” is their argument, they used the wrong argument.
They would have been better saying something like “This stand down policy is to endorse our stance against violence to women. We’re White Ribbon ambassadors, and do what we can to endorse the cause. What JDB has done goes against this value”
*AKA the Jack Wighton defense

Re: St George Illawarra Dragons 2019
de Belin's argument was literally "controversy is good for the game" and "the NRL never educated me about not committing violence against women".
His lawyer literally compared McEnroe yelling at an umpire with a charge of gang rape.
I don't have enough facepalms.

Re: St George Illawarra Dragons 2019
Hopefully the court uphold the NRL decision on this. I’m not arguing about guilt or innocence but if you are putting yourself in a position where you could be charged by police with sexual assault then you shouldn’t be in the game.
Clearly an internal moral compass isn’t enough for some of these guys so if you want behaviour to change you need to threaten their careers. Also if clubs know they risk losing a player for a long time over these kind incidents they will drum it into their thick heads until it finally hits home.
These meat heads get paid well over the odds because of the value of the NRL as a brand. It’s not about being role models, it’s about not damaging the value of the brand. The upshot fro society is that generally this equates with not being an ****!

Re: St George Illawarra Dragons 2019
Agreed Pickles. It would be interesting to see how the NRL would react if they lose this case. Honestly what is stopping them from turning around and deregistering him completely? Surely the NRL has the right to say that a particular player is damaging to their brand and they don't want that player associated with the brand.

Jack de Belin loses Federal Court case against NRL leaving career in limbo
St George Illawarra star Jack de Belin has failed in his bid to overturn the NRL’s ‘no fault’ stand down policy in Federal Court, leaving his career in limbo as he answers a rape charge. Justice Melissa Perry handed down her judgement into de Belin’s case against the NRL and ARL Commission at 4pm on Friday.

Doesn't make much sense. McInnes has been a rare success story at Dragons. Why mess with it?
