Cronulla Sharks appoint John Morris as head coach

John Morris is expected to be unveiled as Cronulla's new head coach on Friday after seemingly winning the race to replace Shane Flanagan.

It's believed that Morris is in the midst of finalising the deal, beating out the likes of Penrith assistant Cameron Ciraldo and St Helens' Justin Holbrook for the coveted job.

Cronulla are close to offering John Morris the coaching role on a fulltime basis - but it may only be for one year in a trial by fire: https://wwos.nine.com.au/nrl/cronulla-s ... 25d5c260e2

I would have thought the board would want to cut ties with all Flanagan coaching related issues. Not just hire his protege.

Cronulla Sharks confirm John Morris as new coach

John Morris says he's up for the challenge of a "massive year ahead" after being confirmed as the new coach of the Cronulla Sharks.

Morris, who has signed a three-year deal as Cronulla's new coach following Shane Flanagan's resignation last month, said his expectation was for the Sharks to finish in the top four this year.

Sharks brace for heavy penalties as NRL uncovers multiple cap breaches

The NRL's salary cap probe into the Sharks has uncovered discrepancies beyond the one it self-reported to the integrity unit as the club braces for another heavy sanction from head office, one likely to have implications on this year's squad.

On the same day James Segeyaro returned to Cronulla training in the hope of resurrecting his NRL career, it emerged the Papua New Guinea international has been given no guarantee his contract will be registered pending the outcome of the salary cap investigation.

The NRL do themselves no favours by ignoring the elephant in the room. The NRL salary cap does not work the way it is currently being managed. The game lurches from one **** up to the next. This breach was only uncovered because of an 'inside man'. The usual checks and balances uncovered absolutely nothing untoward and never has in the NRL. If you put an 'inside man' at every single club I bet they find every single club is in some way breaching the rules.

All the breaches have been tip offs , not initially detected by the NRL

I think its time the NRL take control of all contracts , therefore no grants to the clubs.

Clubs can work off a point system per player or another model either way the NRL handles the money.

100%. We've seen far too many cases of cap rorting go undetected via the regular processes. A sure sign the system is faulty. Real problem is there's no moves to rectify it. They are content to sit and wait for whistleblowers.

Yeah there has to be a system where the NRL manages the contracts and can better track the money each club is spending.

So Club A makes an offer to a player, submits it to the NRL, who then approves or rejects based on whether there’s money in the reserves.
You could even have accountants on both sides of the fence to ensure the club and the NRL are on the same page

And when that happens, I want that job

NRL being the tribal competition that it is, clubs and fans are content to sit back and watch the dominoes fall, while taking great pleasure in the suffering of other teams and their fans. It's simply not sustainable and needs to change.

Struggling clubs cannot compete with the top sides and the only way for them to be at the least competitive, let alone successful, is to cheat. The NRL sits back and let's some clubs access a million dollars worth of TPAs more than other sides. It continues with enabling an uneven competition through FTA coverage.

Every fan of any club should be able to start a new season thinking their side is a chance to win the competition and that simply has not been the case for too long.

The NRL looks to be getting fair dinkum on player behaviour, though the club compensation throws a little doubt there. The next thing they need to fix is the salary cap and the refereeing. They fix these areas, or at least make an effort, they may see some appreciation from the public/fans.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg hands out hefty sanctions to Cronulla Sharks over integrity issues

Cronulla will have to shed a player before their opening Telstra Premiership match in two weeks and may need to release another member of their squad by June 30.

The Sharks have been fined $750,000 but $500,000 has been suspended, while the Sharks have had their salary cap reduced by $353,000 in each of the next two seasons – a decision which means the club needs to release a player immediately to be cap compliant before round one.

Coach Shane Flanagan has had his indefinite deregistration confirmed, while the NRL's fine on the Sharks for dealing with Flanagan during his drug cheating suspension has been reduced from $800,000 to $500,000.

Cronulla Sharks club statement

The Sharks accept the Integrity Unit findings as announced by the NRL today and are pleased that we now can move forward with the salary cap matters closed.

Sharks CEO Barry Russell in accepting the penalties, expressed his pride in the systems now in place and in the processes that led to us to self-reporting a potential breach of the NRL rules.

“We now have best governance practices, have learned some hard lessons during this process and I’m confident the systems we have in place will ensure this doesn’t happen again,” Russell said.

“By applying discounts to the fines imposed, a reduction of $300,000 on appeal to our original 2014 fine of $800,000 and $500,000 of the $750,000 suspended on the salary cap breach, we acknowledge the NRL for recognising our self-reporting and our continued cooperative approach with their subsequent investigations.

“We have no plans to appeal, will deal with the consequences of the fines and punishments and take the positive in that we can now move ahead into the new season and into the future with these matters behind us,” Russell added.

In relation to the 2019-2020 Salary Cap sanction, management and coaching staff, with guidance from our salary cap and recruitment managers, will come together to ensure we are fully compliant as stipulated by the NRL before our round one game on March 15.

Sharks officially accepting the sanctions and announcing no intention of appeal. Little doubt the penalties were pre-negotiated before they were revealed publicly.

They appear to have gotten of very lightly in comparison to the Tigers. Hence the NRL delivering clemency to the Tigers at the same time.

Are there any details of the actual transgressions by the Sharks? I can't recall seeing that detail anywhere.

This is all we’ve been told:

NRL investigators found that an unnamed former Cronulla director set up a company to provide players with Third Party Agreements outside the salary cap.

So the sharks, who have been struggling financially for a number of years, have a $750,000 fine to pay.

After letting staff go to meet this years operating budget, they get hit with this, which you would expect to cover somewhere around 8 support staff wages.

Couple this with having to let a decent player go, and operating on a reduced cap for 2 years, this could be the start of a very dark period for that club.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.

The salary cap deals which brought the Sharks and Wests Tigers undone

A former Cronulla director allegedly paid money into a company established to provide third-party agreements for Sharks players in 2017 as the club attempted to stave off rival offers for members of the previous season's premiership-winning team.

However, NRL officials insist Cronulla's historic 2016 grand final triumph is not tainted as the breaches before 2017 were TPAs for small amounts and the Sharks had been under the salary cap but did not disclose the deals.

Read more: https://www.nrl.com/news/2019/03/01/the ... rs-undone/

So there were in fact non disclosed TPAs in 2016...

Rival clubs circle as Cronulla Sharks brace for roster cut

Rival clubs circling the Sharks' roster will play a large part in dictating who gets released by the club as Cronulla scramble to move on at least one player and be salary cap compliant for round one.

While the Sharks are reluctant to release title-winning half Townsend, who is contracted for both 2019 and 2020, both the Warriors and Eels have cap space to accommodate him and are in need of a top-level playmaker.
