So is that 21 trials? Hmm... so 42 teams, minus 5 non NRL teams...
Average of around 2.3 trials per NRL team then?
We went with 1 again did we? Premiers have 4 do they?
Good.

Re: 2018 Pre season matches
Yep, it seems like the same thinking that 'went so well' in season 2017 will be with us again in 2018. We are the only side without our regular No9 and yet we choose not to play a Week 3 trial game (like everyone else) to give the No9 contenders a better chance to work up combinations before we play for competition points. Not to mention the defensive combinations which were the major reason we missed the Top 8 last year. It's astonishing.

Re: 2018 Pre season matches
The combinations can only really be set up if the starting forwards and halves are there too. I'm not worried about 1 trial if we play most of it like a regular 1st grade match rather than the 20min effort of last year.
A lot of the sides that are playing multiple trials are doing 2 of them with the majority of their first grade squad missing.

Re: 2018 Pre season matches
Zim, imo defensive issues cost us a spot in the semi's last year. We have a new defensive coach this year. I think another trial match before we go into the season competition matches would have been of benefit to our side. As previously mentioned we are the only side without our regular No9 so again I think more game time with the players who are new to our Club would have been advantageous to our seasons preparation. Pointless being 'fresher for the finals' (last years reason for only one trial) if the side doesn't make the finals.zim wrote: ↑February 11, 2018, 1:38 pm The combinations can only really be set up if the starting forwards and halves are there too. 2018 Pre season matches
Is there anyone in the forum who thinks 1 trial is a good idea? Or even an ok idea?
Even if it’s only your fringe players dudded for time, it’s not great.

Re: 2018 Pre season matches
I honestly don't know. I wouldn't say playing only one trial last year was the sole reason we were so poor last year. It may have been part of the reason but looking at the bigger picture their attitude stank from the preseason and got progressively worse as the season went on. Some of the comments coming out of the club were unacceptable. I commented at the time that it reminded me of when they came out publicly and had that stupid "shaving pact".
It's a tough competition and you cannot put a target on your own back for other teams to use as motivation. While it is a tough competition it is also a long season. There are periods throughout the year where you just have those games that don't go your way and accept that it wasn't meant to be. You need to do the hard work to be in a position where those types of games/losses don't hurt you as a side.
So what I'm trying to say is no I don't think only playing one trial is a big deal. To make the finals you can afford to lose 10 out of 24 games.

Seems like your argument is that it’s probably a detriment to the season, but not one that consigns you to failure.
I would agree with that. But in a tough competition why would you self-inflict anything detrimental?

Re: 2018 Pre season matches
What is more detrimental to a season? 40 minutes less match fitness (for your key players) or the potential for a serious injury when you already have one of your key 'spine' players out of action/not at 100% for the majority of the season?
It will be interesting to see how long Slater is out for after last night.

To me seeing the Storm last night, then Souths and a Dragons today up against English sides and then the charity shield, I can’t help but wish we would have a proper full hit out game where the result means something before the season starts.
Yes of course who wins these games means nothing in the end, but they are games taken seriously and played wanting to win with proper roatations and I think that stands a team in good stead come rd 1 over our preparations.

I tend to agree.gergreg wrote:What is more detrimental to a season? 40 minutes less match fitness (for your key players) or the potential for a serious injury when you already have one of your key 'spine' players out of action/not at 100% for the majority of the season?
It will be interesting to see how long Slater is out for after last night.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Re: 2018 Pre season matches
I hope Mark Nicholls can crack the Souths side this year, had a soft spot for him at the Raiders.
Last night set up the match winner, I think an under rated player.

Rain smashing down at Lang Park. Tiny crowd.
I really don’t understand why two of the highest paid players in the NRL are being given a testimonial. It’s simply another loophole in the salary cap. I understand half the proceeds go to charity. All proceeds s should go to junior rugby league or charity IMO.

8th min TRY STORM to Young Tonumaipea. No conversion. The rain is so heavy, you couldn't see the ball... whether it went through the posts or not.

Tiny crowd....think of the children. With the lost revenue from a small crowd how will JT and Smith feed the family this year.

39th min TRY COWBOYS to Johnathan Thurston. He just ran at the line from close range and it somehow opened up. Ethan Lowe misses the conversion from close range.
