Interesting post. Would love to see a modern game.played with the 5m rule - I doubt the on field product could get any more boring.edwahu wrote:Teams stood far deeper under the 5 meter rule and found the time and ways to break down defenses. Yards would be harder to come by but teams aren't supposed to make 50-70 meters a set without a single shift like they do these days.Bay53 wrote:Why?? With the athleticism of the players these days they would never score.edwahu wrote:5 metre rule.
To score they just have to go watch the old tapes and work out they can't rely on the same three plays they do today. The 10 meter rule killed creative football and footballers outside a few spine players. It just lagged a bit while the older players were still around.

I’d like to see
- the 7 tackle set removed
- a contest in the ruck
- the ability to tap and go if the markers aren’t there.

The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Re: What would you like to see come back in the NRL?
The tackle and ruck time should be the same no matter how many in the tackle.
Most notable difference would be the one-on-one legs tackler can hang on for an extra second than what they currently get away with. Gang tackles dont get extra time to peel off one by one, once it's held, they all have to release at the same time.
No reward for gang tackles. No disadvantage for One-on-one.

I don't like that it penalises attacking play. At the same time I like the fact that it has stopped sides kicking dead as a tactic.Dusty wrote:I’d like to see

What about kicks taken outside the 20 being penalised with the 7 tackle set. Attacking kicks from inside the 20, knocking on over the line or losing an aerial contest will be 6 tackles.

I feel if we went back to the 5 metre rule you would just get bashed and nobody would score unless off mistakes.
Think how fast sharks get up against us from 10 metres back. 5 metres they would bash us and be able to do it longer with the energy they would save
Yes they went wider years ago but after 15 minutes not all players were going up in the line, or shutting the gate, they were no where near as fit as current players

Re: What would you like to see come back in the NRL?
It never came in, but bringing in the cancelled Foxtel virtual 10m line to keep the refs honest...
For mine this is a blight on the game. Some refs keep a 12m line, some keep an 8m line. the first few rounds this will cause an uproar as fans see refs not pulling teams back the 10, but the refs will be forced to pick up their game pretty quickly afterwards...
Oh I agree with GEMs 7 tackle set idea, inside 20m no 7 tackle set, outside, yes...

Re: What would you like to see come back in the NRL?
It's not just that teams went wider, it's that they stood deeper. You ended up with the defense back 5 but the If you watch the old 5 meters teams have more time and space because the attack is usually 5 to 10 meters deep vs now when they are 2 or 3.Bennyinthewest wrote:I feel if we went back to the 5 metre rule you would just get bashed and nobody would score unless off mistakes.

Look at the attack in this video for example:
They stopped doing that once 10 meters came in as there was so many easy meters to be made that everyone has started to played flat, straight and simple.
Maybe the fitter defenses would cancel out any benefit and what I am really wishing for is for teams to stand deeper again, but I can't think of a better way with the rules to actually get back to that.

Mate, that fast defence is because refs don't cal offside penalties anymore!Bennyinthewest wrote:I feel if we went back to the 5 metre rule you would just get bashed and nobody would score unless off mistakes.

Yeah I know what your saying, I loved a deep backline (not at training, too tiring haha)edwahu wrote:It's not just that teams went wider, it's that they stood deeper. And you shouldn’t be able to dummy half run for 50 metres a set.
Not sure I have the answer but I feel the 5 metre rule with today’s structured defence they would smother all attack
