Re: 2017 World Cup Week 3: Teams and Game Day
The crowd in Melbourne was good, as was the crowd in Hamilton. I think circa 10k in Cairns was acceptable.Sid wrote:Is the Port Moresby crowd the only one that hasn't been disappointing?
Its Townsville and Canberra that have been disappointing.
No Parramatta stadium has been telling. Lebanon would have had decent crowds there
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.
If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Rugby League World Cup 2017: Italy rally behind former Canberra Raiders captain Terry Campese
Italy are rallying behind veteran playmaker Terry Campese to make a hometown international farewell in their final Rugby League World Cup group match against Fiji on Friday night. The Canberra match looms as a fitting international farewell for Campese who launched his career in the national capital.
"We will give him every chance," Italy coach Cameron Ciraldo said, after Campese withdrew from both World Cup matches to date, with injury.

Got my ticket for the Italy/Fiji last night, Pax was 3943. Going to be another tiny crowd unfortunately.
Would be great if the Raiders could do something for members like $5/10 tickets or something but understand it is out of their control.

Re: 2017 World Cup Week 3: Teams and Game Day
The RLWC organisers have over priced big time. The problem is that once you have over charged some members... then it's not really fair to the members who bought a year ago in the pre sale... to have discounted seats made available with a week to go.-GD- wrote:Got my ticket for the Italy/Fiji last night, Pax was 3943. The pricing and lack of promotion has been a massive failure. I wonder if the original CEO for RLWC... who had to resign... had not had his problem... whether things might have been very different.
The NRL's approach to ticketing for the finals series has been replicated for the World Cup... and it's a debacle.

England's McGillvary referred to judiciary on biting charge
England winger Jermaine McGillvary has been referred straight to the World Cup judiciary on a charge of biting Lebanon's Robbie Farah in Friday night's 29-10 win over the Cedars.
His contrary conduct hearing will take place on Wednesday night and will determine his availability for England's final pool game, against France on Sunday night.

Former Canberra Raiders captain Terry Campese pays tribute to aunt, to beat World Cup curse
The chance to pay tribute to his late aunt Corrina has added extra motivation to Terry Campese's bid to break a World Cup curse in time for an emotional homecoming on Friday night. Former Raiders skipper Campese is fighting to overcome a calf injury to play in Italy's World Cup clash against Fiji at Canberra Stadium.
"The thing I keep reliving is that I got to say my final goodbyes to [Corrina] on the phone two days before she died," Campese said.

Canberra Raiders Josh Hodgson and Elliott Whitehead to be rested for England’s clash with France
England coach Wayne Bennett says he wants to give all 24 players in his World Cup squad some game time, making changes for the Week 3 clash with France in Perth. Canberra Raiders Josh Hodgson and Elliott Whitehead are set to be rested from the match. Hodgson has not been named while, Whitehead has been included on the extended reserves list.
“I was pleased with the win against Lebanon but I’m looking for a better performance this week,” Bennett said in a statement from the England camp. “We lost our way in the second-half in the last game and that’s something we’ll be looking to improve on. We know what we’re capable of, so we’ll be aiming to put things right by Sunday.
“We’re off the mark now in this tournament and building each week. I know France have lost their first two games but that won’t alter the way we go into this one – they’re a strong side with some talented guys who can play. They’ll be doing everything they can to get a win in this group so we’ll have to be at our best.”
England 21-man squad to play against France:
1 Gareth Widdop
2 Stefan Ratchford

Canberra Raiders selected for Week 3 of the World Cup
Seven Canberra Raiders are set to feature in Week 3 of the tournament.
Canberra Raiders winger Jordan Rapana has been named for the Kiwis, along with Joseph Tapine, for New Zealand's crucial clash with Tonga at Waikato Stadium in Hamilton on Saturday.
Samoa has again named Joey Leilua, Junior Paulo and Josh Papalii in their starting team, as they prepare to meet Scotland at Barlow Park in Cairns on Saturday.
On Sunday, Kato Ottio has been named at centre for the PNG Kumuls, while hooker Kurt Baptiste has been dropped to the bench, with James Segeyaro to start at dummy half. The Raiders duo will face the United States in Port Moresby on Sunday.
Josh Hodgson and Elliott Whitehead will be rested from England's match against France. Hodgson has not been named in the 21 man squad, while Whitehead has only been included on the extended reserves list.
Former Canberra Raiders captain Terry Campese has been selected at five eighth for Italy in Friday night's clash with Fiji at Canberra Stadium. He'll be hoping to over come a calf injury which kept him out of the first two weeks of the tournament - so he can have a long overdue farewell match at the venue.

Former Canberra Raiders captain Terry Campese wants just one more game
Just one more game. That's all Terry Campese wants from his battered body. The former Canberra Raiders skipper admits Italy's World Cup clash in the capital on Friday night could be the last game of his career.
"They say a calf injury is an old man injury, but I've been getting injured since I was in my mid 20s. It's just my body," Campese laughed. "I don't know if I'll play [for the Queanbeyan Blues] next year. So this could be the last game ever, all of my energy is going into getting this calf right.

What do we think his chances are of playing? Kinda worried he won’t be ready, but plays anyway and makes it a lot worse
Re: 2017 World Cup Week 3: Teams and Game Day
Considering it's probably his last game I reckon he'll play, even if it's off the bench

RLWC 2017: Italy coach Cameron Ciraldo to give former Canberra Raiders captain Terry Campese every chance of World Cup dream
Italy coach Cameron Ciraldo will give Terry Campese until the 11th hour for a fairy tale farewell against Fiji at Canberra Stadium on Friday night. Campese got through the captain's run on Thursday and it now comes down to his niggling calf injury pulling up OK on game day.
"We've got plenty to play for no matter what, but to give Campo the farewell he deserves down here would be a really big thing for our group and hopefully we can do it in the right way," Ciraldo said.

Anxious World Cup wait almost over for former Canberra Raiders captain Terry Campese
The frustrating wait is almost over for Italy five-eighth Terry Campese - and his long suffering mum.
"I had to ring the old girl and get her to cancel her flights the morning of the last game (against the USA) in Townsville," Campese said. "She lives in the Canberra area so it won't muck her around too much if this last game doesn't pan out but fingers crossed I will be able to run out there. I got through the captain's run today so I will just see how I pull up tomorrow."

Terry Campese keen for Canberra farewell he never got from NRL
IT IS the farewell that has been on hold a staggering 1195 days. And provided his calf pulls up fine this morning, Terry Campese will finally get the chance to farewell the locals when he runs on to Canberra Stadium on Friday.
Campese completed Thursday’s captain’s run with Italy and quipped: “Even if the calf is **** in the morning, I might bung it on and say ‘it’s alright’. It feels alright now, it’s been a couple of hours, and we’ll see how I wake up in the morning. Hopefully I can spring out of bed and take off.
