Kangaroos take leave before England clash

Australia coach Mal Meninga has rewarded his Kangaroos players with three days off following their undefeated start to the Four Nations campaign.

Fresh from beating New Zealand 14-8 at Coventry, the squad departed their Birmingham base for London on Sunday ahead of next week's clash with England at the Olympic Stadium (0100 Monday, AEDT).

Several of the squad have flown out to Barcelona for a short break with other players staying in the British capital to catch up with friends and family.

As pressure mounts on Shaun Kenny-Dowall to maintain his right centre spot for New Zealand, Jordan Rapana has thrown his support behind the veteran Rooster.

"When Kenny-Dowall is on he is definitely one of the best centres in the game, he is capable of setting me up with a lot of tries and I have got no doubt that once he hits his peak form and confidence is high, that he will be able to do anything," Rapana said. "He is my roommate and an awesome bloke, I definitely wouldn't say his confidence is down, it is more just that he hasn't played much footy over the last while.

Canberra Raiders Joe Tapine named for Kiwis Test debut

Four new caps have been injected into an overhauled Kiwis team to face Scotland at the Four Nations.

Warriors winger David Fusitu'a is in the starting team while the three other uncapped players are on the interchange for Friday's Test in Workington.

Te Maire Martin, James Fisher-Harris and Joseph Tapine will make their debuts off the bench in a match New Zealand must win by 42 points to guarantee a place in the tournament final.

Canberra Raiders prop Joe Tapine is set for his Kiwis debut, but Dean Pay says we're only starting to so what he can do.

"I think people are just getting a taste of what he can do. He's still only young so there is a lot of improvement left in him and a lot of development left in him," the former Kangaroos prop said. "He's going to be one hell of a player once he gets another couple of seasons under his belt that's for sure. He's a good player now so he's only going to improve on what he's doing now."

After just a few weeks with the Kiwis, Jordan Rapana is already one of the confirmed card sharks on the team.

"I've cleaned up a couple of times," jokes Rapana. "We are not playing for much but it is always nice to win...some bragging rights."

Canberra NRL hooker Josh Hodgson is convinced England can end a 10-year wait for a home win over Australia when they meet on Sunday in London.

"It's been a long time but this is a different team to the teams that have been and gone. We know if we are at our best, we can get the job done. Scotland makes two changes for clash with New Zealand

Scotland coach Steve McCormack has made two changes to his 19-man squad for the Ladbrokes Four Nations clash with New Zealand on Friday night. In come half-back Ryan Brierley and forward Billy McConnachie, who both made their test debuts in the defeat to Australia in the tournament opener, replacing hooker Callum Phillips and Widnes forward Sam Brooks.

Huddersfield's Brierley has fully recovered from the ankle sprain that ruled him out of training during the build-up to the England clash, while McConnachie of Ipswich Jets gets another opportunity after impressing in training this week in Preston. Workington Town youngster Phillips will be disappointed to miss out on his home ground, but older brother Brett is in the 19 and hoping to make his Four Nations bow on his club ground.

England forwards Josh Hodgson and Elliot Whitehead have credited Canberra coach Ricky Stuart with elevating their careers to new heights since joining the Raiders.

"Ricky has been massive for me, " said Hodgson. "One thing he is very big on is family and making sure that you're good outside of rugby league. He's a funny bloke and he gets a bad rap in the press for being a cranky bloke but he only gets cranky if you do anything wrong for him - so he's alright with me! He's been really good for me and brought me on as a senior player in the team and given me a lot of responsibility and that's added to my game massively.

New Zealand will send four Test rookies into battle against Scotland this weekend, but coach David Kidwell has insisted he has no concerns about how they will handle the occasion.

Raiders winger Jordan Rapana is one player being rested, while Joe Tapine will make his debut on the bench.

"These guys are in this team for a reason and they belong in this team," Kidwell said. "They have earned their spot, I think they have really trained hard and helped the guys in the 17 prepare for the Tests before (against England and Australia).

Wayne Bennett doesn’t care what his critics think, and thinks Mal has it all wrong



ENGLAND coach Wayne Bennett insists Mal Meninga is wrong to think he’s trying to undermine him and warned his critics he isn’t going to change.

In a remarkable press conference in London’s docklands, the veteran coach said he and Australia coach Meninga spoke this week and maintained he’s done nothing wrong.

"He hasn’t said anything to me," Bennett said. "I saw him yesterday, spent a bit of time with him. It’s a matter of perception. I didn’t do that (undermine him). If that’s what he believes then that’s his prerogative."

EYEBROWS were raised when Josh Hodgson swapped Hull KR for Canberra Raiders two years ago, but the England hooker has not looked back since.

Wayne Bennett has included experienced forward James Graham in his 19-man squad to face Australia in the final group game of the Ladbrokes Four Nations at the London Stadium on Sunday, November 13 (2.00pm).

Canberra Raiders Shannon Boyd named at 18 for Australian Kangaroos in a 19 man squad to face England

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has confirmed his squad for the Four Nations match against England on Sunday.

After missing the victory over New Zealand, halfback Cooper Cronk, centre Josh Dugan and forward Tyson Frizell all return to the squad.

"The England team as always will be very strong and desperate at home so it will be great to welcome those players back," Meninga said.
