Re: 2017 State of Origin
2 Games in Brissy again... poor rats and filth. Maybe we should run out a team full of all the blokes who were banned this year, keep it interesting.

John Cartwright to join Laurie Daley’s NSW State of Origin coaching staff in 2017
JOHN Cartwright has been appointed as an assistant to Laurie Daley as NSW overhaul their State of Origin coaching staff.
“I am really excited about the changes and grateful for the Board’s support,” said Daley. “John is a well-respected and credentialed coach and has played at the highest level of the game, for NSW and Australia.”

NSWRL makes a Sterling appointment for Origin
One of Australia's all-time great halfbacks and a highly respected commentator, Peter Sterling, has been appointed as NSW VB Blues coach Laurie Daley's new adviser for the 2017 State of Origin Series.
Sterling, who replaces Immortal Bob Fulton, is a former Blues captain who played 13 Origin games for NSW (1981-88), 18 Tests for Australia and 227 games for Parramatta, winning four premierships; and is an Australian Rugby League Hall of Fame inductee.

Re: 2017 State of Origin
We'll probably end up with a side something like this:
1. James Tedesco
2. Blake Ferguson (Mansour would still be injured)
3. Jack Bird
4. Joey Leilua
5. Jarryd Hayne
6. James Maloney
7. Adam Reynolds
8. Aaron Woods (he's a lock to be there so might as well include him)
9. Robbie Farrah
10. David Klemmer
11. Boyd Cordner
12. Wade Graham
13. Trent Merrin
14. Matt Moylan
15. Tyson Frizell
16. Andrew Fifita
17. Shannon Boyd
It's better than what we rolled out in 2016. You could easily put Moylan at 6 and Maloney at 7 given their current form.

As it stands that'd be pretty bloody close IMO, although I'd expect one of those bench props to start ahead of Klemmer.
Fingers crossed our two halves have a cracker of a season, because they could put some real pressure on the likes of Maloney and Reynolds.

Agreed on the swapping of Klemmer. It is a pretty impressive forward pack as it stands. Hopefully Peats can play some good footy and get the no 9 spot but I can't see it happening.Seiffert82 wrote:As it stands that'd be pretty bloody close IMO, although I'd expect one of those bench props to start ahead of Klemmer.

If Austin can have a good start to the season he is a chance of taking the utility role as I think they will stick with Moylan and Maloney in the halves.

Still with hooker being one of the most important positions on the field NSW will struggle with Farah the best option.

Jesus **** Christ if we name our best player since Fittler and Johns on the wing we may as well gift wrap the **** shield for Qld now. We've won one series in 11 years and it was all Hayne. We can't shift him from the spine if he's available.zim wrote: 5. Jarryd Hayne

2017 State of Origin
1. Hayne
2. Tedesco
3. Croker
4. BJ
5. Turbo
6. Moylan
7. Maloney
8. Woods
9. Peats
10. Boyd

14. J. Bird
15. Klemmer
16. Paulo
17. Cartwright
I think that's near about the best team nsw can name for 2017. I've taken Mansour's injury into account btw
The halves and hooker are well below the level required but I'm not sure there is any better option
You hope that maybe in 2018 Nathan Cleary is ready to fill the void
In 2017, our boys have a chance to press their claims and Adam Reynolds will be in with a shot
Someone floated this elsewhere but I like the idea of Mitchell Pearce at hooker for NSW, and things might just be desperate enough to try that
2. Tedesco
3. Croker

- I don't rate Peats at all. He's tough but a very, very ordinary 9 in attack. So unless my guy proves 2016 was a fluke at the start of next year I would have Peter Wallace at hooker. That move and how solid he was in both attack and defence was a very understated reason as to why Penrith ended so strong.
- I pick Jack Bird at centre or not at all. I'm not sure whether I'd pick Bird or Croker. I'm a broken record with this but that 'utility' needs to wholly cover the spine and Bird on the bench doesn't cover hooker IMO. I'm still of the belief that Blake Austin is born for Origin and even moreso **** bred for that utility role.
- Jake Trbo is a great defender, but the lock position has to go to Trent Merrin. Just has to.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.
2017 State of Origin
Wallace is definitely an option at hooker, id kind of forgotten about him too. I don't rate peats very highly either but there isn't a lot of options
That fact that Peats, Wallace and Mitchell Pearce are the 3 best options probably speaks volumes about the position. If someone wanted to fight hard for Wallace i wouldn't stand in the way, he's as good an option as any
I think Bird can cover hooker in a pinch, at least on the same level that other utilities who are essentially specialist hookers cover 5/8th... that said I'm in lock step with you re: Austin IF (and it's a big if) he stays injury free and puts his best footy on tape
I'm not a huge Merrin guy TBH, he's had his chances and never really proven to be a difference maker at origin level. Jake Trbo is more than a defender, he's got a very good middle third attacking game, it's a matter of time before he's a staple for this line up, might as well get him in there

A few things - Hayne will never get back to 2014 form, he was insane that series. He'll still be able to get heavily involved at centre, and moving tedesco away from fullback is a backwards step IMO.
Halves - I'd be happy to go with 6. Maloney, and 7. Pearce. For all his previous failures in SOO, pearce is still a quality halfback, and much better than Adam Reynolds.
Merrin - we've groomed him in origin for 5 years (excluding this year), and now when he's in the peak of his career we don't want to use him? Makes no sense to me.

Re: 2017 State of Origin
If Hayne is fit and looking half the player he was 2 years ago, he HAS to be in the 1 or 6. I'm not sold at all that Tedesco is as top shelf as everyone thinks. He's undoubtedly a gun at NRL level, but I'm not sure he'll be a dominant Origin player.
well, I guess you could say that I'm buy curious.
Re: 2017 State of Origin
Wow, came in hear hoping to hang some **** on NSW supporters, but with Cartwright and Sterling now playing a role with the possible teams being named in here, you guys are actually starting to look OK again. I am a little surprised Zim's team is the only one with Fifita named though. Have I missed some more news on him? Even though I don't rate him all that much personally, I would have assumed he's next to no chance of being left out.

It's the same reason why I added Farah in. I was trying to put together a likely side whereas others have said what they want the side to be instead.Archer wrote:Wow, came in hear hoping to hang some **** on NSW supporters, but with Cartwright and Sterling now playing a role with the possible teams being named in here, you guys are actually starting to look OK again. It's not exactly a bunch of superstar hookers, but if I wanted to tinker I'd give Wallace a crack. Peats is too one dimensional I think. Wallace can do everything a halfback can do as well as tackle. You'd need a utility coming off the bench at some stage for him though and in that case you'd need to shuffle the rest of the side around a bit.
