Re: Newcastle Knights 2016
I'd actually feel a little sorry for the Knights if Ponga is not released early. Whilst they may have attempted to play hardball with us over Tapine, in the end they have used common sense in releasing players early from contract like BJ, Tapine and Sims. It would be a bit ironic if they didn't receive that in return.
While the mega bucks multi year deal is definitely a high risk option, it is what they need to do to move their current state forward. They won't attract existing top line players, so building a team around an expected future top line player is a good option.
I hope they get him, and I hope they start bringing some respectability back to the team. After all, it wasn't that long ago we were aweful (though not quite as bad!) and couldn't attract decent players.

Re: Newcastle Knights 2016
Yeah it is pretty petty if the cowboys don't release him. He wouldn't have been on there starting 17 plans for this season.

Re: Newcastle Knights 2016
Hes in their plans for next season and fair enough too as thats when they signed him until. As long as they continue his development and use him as they would have if he wasnt leaving, then the knights dont have a damned thing to sook about
Dont delete this GE
Re: Newcastle Knights 2016
The cowboys plan to use him if he's good enough
They are within their rights to do so
The knights threaten to dump their guys into park footy and barred them from being around the squad. Totally different situations

God willing Ponga will stink too

Probably a good thing for the knights. I've got no idea how much or how long his contract is form but they certainly aren't getting value for money.Matt wrote:Saying it could be career ending this time-TW- wrote:Mullens done his hamstring for the 154th time

Newcastle Knights Mullen's hamstring woes continue
Experienced Knights playmaker Jarrod Mullen's preparations for next season have been interrupted by a recurrence of a hamstring injury that plagued him throughout 2016.
"It is not going to be as strong as it usually is," Mullen told the Newcastle Herald. "If it keeps going it will be pretty hard to get back. I just have to be patient with it, and hopefully it gets stronger before the start of the season. It is frustrating for me and the club that it went again. But it is not as bad as last time."

Mal Meninga: What Newcastle Knights gain from Kalyn Ponga seeing out Cowboys contract
KANGAROOS coach Mal Meninga says Newcastle will reap long-term benefits if NRL prodigy Kalyn Ponga sees out his North Queensland contract in 2017.
The Knights are still hopeful of Ponga being released from the final year of his Cowboys deal after confirming they had signed the teenager on a lucrative four-year contract from 2018.

Newcastle Knights keen to sign Cronulla Sharks young gun Jack Bird
JUST weeks after signing boom rookie Kalyn Ponga, wooden-spooners Newcastle have gone public with their plan to pinch young gun Jack Bird from the premiership-winning Sharks.
Bird comes off contract after next season. St George Illawarra were also thought to be interested in Bird but appear to have gone cold on him.

Re: Newcastle Knights 2016
The big question mark on signing him for big cash is what position are they signing him as.
I've always said that you pay your wingers the least money on your roster but I think centre is not far off it.

Re: Newcastle Knights 2016
Considering 17 blokes actually play the lowest paid should be the interchange hooker if he's obviously inferior to the starter and prop #4, maybe #3 too.RTW wrote:

Re: Newcastle Knights 2016
You could probably look at the ladder over the past few years and deduce that the majority of the teams in the top 8 also have the best forward packs in the competition. Clearly Brown doesn't realise this. There is no point in continuing to recruit quality backs when your forward pack is ****. Recruiting two bench hookers (Buhrer and Kostjayson) doesn't fix their forward pack. Unless they have some quality NYC forwards coming through the ranks that I don't know about.
Shoving it in your face since 2017

Newcastle release Jake Mamo, sign Joe Wardle for 2017
NEWCASTLE have continued to rebuild their roster with Joe Wardle to join the club for 2017 and Jake Mamo to leave for English club Huddersfield. Wardle, a centre or backrower, was set to join the Knights in 2018 but has secured an early release from the Giants and will join Newcastle as soon as his visa is approved.
“I coached Joe during my time in England and know he will be a great addition to our young squad,” said Knights coach Nathan Brown.

Re: Newcastle Knights 2016
Seems like they have to be moving Barnett into the middle. Him and Sione Mata'utia nailed down the starting second row spots in 2016 but since then they've signed Jamie Buhrer who I think is too small for the middle and Joe Wardle, who again is too small to be in the middle.... it's hard to make sense of their signings.

They are lacking big time in the forwards.
Mitch Barnett became their best forward the moment he turned up.

Yeah I'd say so. Maybe one of the Saifiti boys instead of starling so you have the big prop / mobile prop combo starting and off the bench.-GD- wrote:Korbin Sims will be one prop, Starling probably the other.

Newcastle Knights 2016
Knights have signed Kenny-Dowell effective immediately. Also apparently about to announce the signings of T Moga and Herman Ese'ese
Re: Newcastle Knights 2016
SKD and Moga will be the worst centre pairing for the money I have ever seen in professional rugby league

Peter Mata'utia says Newcastle Knights players were called 'losers' by little girls
Peter Mata'utia has been sledged before but this was different.
"Hearing little girls wearing Knights jerseys saying we are losers, parents saying how much money they spent to bring their kids to the game … it hurts," Mata'utia said. "That shows how much we mean to the town as well."
With everything to play for – most notably a step towards avoiding a third straight wooden spoon – the Knights were humiliated 33-12 by fellow strugglers Wests Tigers at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday.

Re: Newcastle Knights 2016
funny, Peter Matautia has been told he won't be retained then attempts a puff piece.
Sione has a get out clause relating to his 3 brothers, peter has been told he's gone whilst Pat and Chanel also advised to investigate their options. I reckon we'll know how iron clad the boys are soon enough.
Brendon Elliott also getting shown the door among a host of others.
Outside Sione and Barnett not much to pick from though.

They've got 18 off contract players + Gagai leaving, so they'll have plenty of cap space for next season
