CEO
The spiral of silence refers to the idea that when people fail to speak, the price of speaking rises. As the price to speak rises, still fewer speak out, which further causes the price to rise, so that fewer people yet will speak out, until a whole culture or nation is silenced. This is what happened in Germany.

If you do not speak, you are not being neutral, but are contributing to the success of the thing you refuse to name and condemn.

Heritage, heart, drive Eddie in hometown

IT took the heartache of a funeral for 125kg Chilean-Canberran Eddie Wegener to find out there was such a thing as Latin American Rugby League.

Now he is set to be a leading force – both on and off the field – in bringing a team representing the combined nations of South and Central America to the city in which he was raised.

The GYG Latin Heat will line up against Thailand Stars at Raiders Belconnen RLFC in Canberra on the night of Saturday, January 16, kicking off the 2016 international rugby league season.

World Cup to expand in 2021

With expressions of interest to host the 2021 World Cup starting to come in, Rugby League International Federation CEO David Collier has confirmed that the number of nations participating in it will rise from 14 to 16.

"The growth of rugby league internationally is reflected in the expansion of the tournament to four pools of four," Collier said.

"The strength of the 2017 World Cup qualifiers to date, across the continents, has shown a significant increase in playing standard and quality and the newly adopted international calendar will ensure that teams will have a minimum of 15 months prior to the 2021 event to stake their claim."

Gee the Poms forward pack is looking great for this World Cup next year.

James Graham, Josh Hodgson, 3 X Burgess boys, Whitehead, Sean OLoughlin etc.

Not sure about the strength of their backs but Wayne has a decent crop of forwards.

Mike Cooper was excellent for the Dragons on Sunday.

In the backs they'd have to go with Widdop and I reckon Bennett would have Jack Reed at centre, Eden on one wing and Tomkins at the fullback. Don't think they can match it with AUS there.

Fullbacks don't have to catch high balls? Being a nervous rookie is fair enough but I don't see how someone can be picked in an international side until they've produced at least some consistency.

If you are picking him on the wing for england then you are saying he is at least the 2nd best player for the position.

It's a comment on how strong your wings are if the best option you have is Greg Eden (DJ89 picked Eden on the wing for England.).

He reckons Bennett would pick him is what he said.

Greg Eden shouldn't even be in discussions.

Hardaker, Hall, Watkins are all absolute locks. Then they start to look at Burgess, McGilvray, Cujoe, Bateman etc etc who are all good players.

I don't know about Hall but agree with the others. Manfredi is pretty good too from what I've seen. Knowing Bennett and his pet favourites, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes with what he knows.

Channel Seven has won the television rights to the Rugby League World Cup in 2017

CHANNEL Seven has snuck under the guard of Channel Nine and Fox Sports to secure the television rights for the upcoming rugby league World Cup in Australia next year.

And there are plans to launch the tournament in Melbourne on Derby Day at Flemington with a Kangaroos-England blockbuster at the MCG two hours after the last race.

Channel Seven is believed to have paid almost $10 million for the Australian rights. The network’s highly respected sports news director Jim Wilson is certain to host the tournament.

Seven will show the big matches on their main free-to-air channel and minor games on their digital on 7mate.

Andrew Moore and Dan Ginnane on Seven's radar for 2017 Rugby League World Cup

Channel Seven is tipped to target Andrew Moore and Dan Ginnane as the network looks to sign commentators for its coverage of next year's Rugby League World Cup.

Seven has forked out about $10 million to beat Nine and Fox to the broadcast rights for the game's showpiece international event. There are plans to stage the opening game, an Australia-England blockbuster, to coincide with Derby Day, the Saturday before the race that stops the nation, in Melbourne.

NSW refuses to bid for RLWC 2017 games so Sydney misses out

Sydney has been allocated just two pool games for RLWC 2017 — both featuring international minnows Lebanon. One is against England and the other against the Kangaroos — both at Allianz Stadium. We get nothing else.

For the World Cup, Sydney has been rejected for quarter-finals, semis and the final which will be played at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. A quarter-final has been allocated to Darwin ahead of Sydney.

Games will be played in 12 cities — Perth, Darwin, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Townsville, Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Port Moresby.

Rugby League: Kangaroos to hold court in Canberra for 2017 World Cup

Canberra's reputation as a home for international sport continues to grow with the Australian Kangaroos to play in the capital during next year's Rugby League World Cup, one of one of three fixtures in the capital.

Given co-hosts New Zealand will host all their games and Australia plays England in the tournament opener in Melbourne in early November, it's expected the Canberra match will be against a second tier nation.

Canberra is expected to host more games than Sydney (two) after the NSW government refused to pay for games.

MEDIA RELEASE: Seven secures ‪#‎RLWC2017‬

The Channel 7 Network, Australia’s most-watched broadcast television platform, today confirmed an agreement for all-encompassing coverage of the Rugby League World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand from 27 October to 2 December 2017.

Seven’s agreement for the Rugby League World Cup 2017 delivers all rights in Australia including free-to-air broadcast television and subscription television rights, online and mobile. Seven will broadcast live and free all 28 games, using all their expertise to showcase international Rugby League to Australian households like never before.

Seven has also been appointed to undertake the host broadcast for international television of all games played in Australia in the Rugby League World Cup 2017. Seven’s partnership with the Rugby League World Cup follows Seven’s successful broadcast of the sport’s pinnacle event in 2013.

Michael Brown, Chief Executive Officer, Rugby League World Cup 2017 said: “The Seven Network is widely renowned as a leader in sports broadcasting and the Rugby League World Cup 2017 Organising Committee is excited by the opportunities that this partnership presents to both the tournament and the sport as a whole.

2017 Rugby League World Cup draw

The Rugby League World Cup 2017 announced the draw for the tournament to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand and Papua New Guinea on Tuesday.

Melbourne Rectangular Stadium will host a blockbuster opening match of the RLWC2017, when the home nation – the Kangaroos – begin their campaign under lights against England on Friday, October 27.

The following day the Kiwis first pool match will be played at the home of Rugby League in New Zealand – Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium – when they take on Pacific rivals Samoa.

Port Moresby will host the PNG Kumuls' three pool matches against two European Qualifiers and the USA. The first match is scheduled for Saturday, October 28 and in a country where Rugby League is the national sport, the passionate fans of PNG are sure to embrace the sport's pinnacle event.

The World Cup Final will be decided at Brisbane Stadium on Saturday December 2, as the two finalists battle it out for the right to hold aloft the Paul Barrière trophy and claim the title of World Champions.

RLWC2017 chief executive officer Michael Brown said the Organising Committee made a deliberate decision to take the Rugby League World Cup to more fans than any World Cup has done before.

"The Tournament Draw demonstrates how far and wide we are taking matches, from established Rugby League communities, to those new and emerging fan bases in all three countries," he said.

"Over the course of the pool stages we have looked to position matches in strong Rugby League communities and where large populations of ex-pats, Pacifica and indigenous fans live, to give those who love the sport and their national teams the chance to see some World Cup action.

"The decision to take matches to places like Darwin, Perth, Christchurch and Port Moresby were made with the future of the game in mind. They are matches we believe will give profile to the sport in markets that have already shown an appetite for rugby league."

The RLWC2017 Tournament Draw is family-friendly by intention, with all matches to be played across the weekend including Friday night games. There will be three double-headers in Cairns, Perth and Townsville, providing additional value for money for fans.

When not attending games, fans will experience some of the most iconic sporting destinations in the world. Sports enthusiasts will be able to explore the diversity of the eight host cities across Australia to New Zealand's compact nature that simplifies travel and makes it easy for visitors to access all venues while experiencing a variety of tourist attractions along the way. The welcome and hospitality supporters will receive when visiting all three host nations will make the RLWC2017 a bucket list item for sports fans worldwide.

"We not only want to see traditional rugby league fans come out to support their national team, we aim to engage with the local communities of all participating teams to deliver an event that will entertain the world, inspire communities and celebrate rugby league," continued Brown.

“Rugby league is truly a game for everyone. We hope the Rugby League World Cup 2017 leaves a legacy for the game that sees it continue to grow and dominate the sporting landscape."

Tournament Pools

With 11 teams already confirmed, the final three teams will come from the European Qualifying Tournament to be played in October and November this year.

The pool structure reflects that of the successful 2013 Tournament. The composition of the pools for RLWC2017 were shaped by a number of considerations, including the final placings from the 2013 World Cup and current world rankings

Pool A: Australia, England, France, Lebanon
Pool B: New Zealand, Samoa, Scotland, Tonga
